Foreword from the CEO / Principal Mr. Bill Annandale You are holding the new-look Lusitania 2023 Yearbook and we hope that you’ll enjoy paging through it. School Yearbooks usually have very long lives as we turn back to them year after year to relive happy memories, achievements and phases of life that we often wish we could relive. It is also a record of teachers and pupils that becomes timeless and a true keepsake. This is why so much effort has gone into this edition to make it a keepsake that captures the year for you, your child and for the entire school.

It is also evidenced by the fact that top senior schools welcome and even compete for our pupils who go on to achieve excellent results, take up leadership positions and represent many 1st teams. The choice that you made, to enroll your son or daughter at Lusitania, is an investment that has huge pay offs as they move through their educational lives to high school and beyond. The school sees its role as preparing pupils for the next step of high school and it does this with excellence. Lusitania offers a wide variety of sporting options in both summer and winter. The values learnt from sport such as the need to train, commit, perform and be disciplined are at the heart of everything we do. In addition, sport, by its nature, means there are times of victory and defeat.

Lusitania is truly blessed with the pupils we have and the staff who teach them, care for them and prepare facilities for them. It is a school with a strong sense of identity and loyalty. There has not been a day this year when we can feel anything less than pride in the way that your sons and daughters conduct themselves and give of their best, whether in the classroom, on the playing fields or in any aspect of our flourishing performing arts department. You will see evidence of this on every page of this Yearbook.

Lusitania pupils are encouraged to accept either in a gracious manner and to keep improving as this mindset applies to everything else in life. In the classroom, the same idea is promoted - keep trying, keep working until success comes. In this sense, the two arms of school life come together to empower every individual and to instill the confidence they each need to deal with life in general.

Lusitania has a very strong academic ethos that prepares our pupils to the highest standard for the next step of senior school. This is evidenced by the fact that our Grade 7 results are amongst the best in the entire country and at the top of the ATS ladder.

Our comprehensive performing and visual arts programme is one of our showcase attributes with every one of our pupils learning to partake in many ways.

The photos from our school play and cultural days such as Africa Day, Portuguese Day and others illustrate just how talented the children are and how the opportunities offered to them truly enrich their lives. They push their own boundaries and discover more about their own potential than they would otherwise believe possible. The school is grateful for your support as parents and guardians. Together, we ensure that each and every child reaches a point where he or she can be the best possible version of themselves. Lusitania also benefits tremendously from the wisdom and guidance provided by the Board of Governors. Our Chairman, Mr. Simoes and his fellow Governors truly have the best interests of the school at heart and invest much time and energy into its well-being. Obrigado! Around the world, 2023 has been extremely challenging and even troubling but this Yearbook is a tribute to the world of Lusitania that will bring you joy, pride and hope for the future. Reflecting on 2023: A Year of Exceptional Triumphs and Achievements

Our Hellenic five-aside soccer team showcased their teamwork and strategic skills by securing a third place among twelve schools. We hosted an invitational swimming gala for six schools, where our school secured a commendable fourth place. These achievements in the sports arena underscore our commitment to fostering a balanced learning environment that encourages physical fitness and teamwork alongside academic rigor.

Performing Arts: Nurturing Talent and Creativity Cultural Immersion: Enriching our Learning Environment The first term of 2023 saw the successful execution of several cultural events. Our vibrant Carnaval, themed around cartoon characters, was an immersive and interactive event, providing our students with a platform to showcase their creativity while fostering a sense of community. Our Portuguese Day celebration, themed “Past, Present, and Future,” was another enriching event that allowed our students to delve into the intricacies of a different culture, enhancing their understanding of cultural diversity. Creativity and artistic expression are integral aspects of our holistic education approach. Our students have excelled in the NIAA performances and choirs, securing mostly first grades. Our Tut Tut play in the second term was an exceptional display of our children’s talents. Watching our students immerse themselves in their roles was a joy, showcasing their acting skills and creativity. Our Performing Arts department organised an inter-house public speaking event for Grades 3-7. This event was a testament to the eloquence and confidence of our young learners, who delivered powerful speeches that left a lasting impression.

As the year 2023 draws to a close, I am filled with pride and satisfaction as I reflect on the many accomplishments of our esteemed institution. As the Head of Academics, I am particularly delighted with the progress and achievements of our vibrant community in the realms of academics, sports, and performing arts. Academic Excellence: The Hallmark of our Institution Our academic performance has been exceptional this year, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to academic excellence. As a distinguished educational institution, we strive to uphold a high standard of academic proficiency. We celebrated a landmark achievement at the end of 2022, as our Grade 7 students achieved a 100% pass rate. Our Cambridge Checkpoint assessments also reflected exceptional pass rates across all subjects, affirming our dedication to comprehensive learning and developing critical thinking skills. We are currently awaiting the results of our Grade 7 ZIMSEC examinations and the Grade 6 Checkpoint assessments with bated breath. Our prayers and best wishes are with our students, as we hope they continue our tradition of excellence. Furthermore, all our students who wrote the CHIZC entrance exams have been successfully placed into Form 1 for high school next year, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Sports: Fostering Teamwork and Resilience In the realm of sports, our students have consistently demonstrated their mettle. They clinched second place in the cross-country meet, outclassing thirteen other schools. Their athleticism shone again in the Interschools Athletics meet, where they secured second place among six schools. We were once again the runners-up in the Hellenic athletics competition, a proud accomplishment considering the stiff competition from five other schools. 10 This Page is Proudly sponsored by Imar Amor Brito Gwiza

Extra-Curricular Activities: Broadening Horizons Trips and outings have always been an essential part of our curriculum, aimed at broadening the horizons of our students and providing them with hands-on learning experiences. This year, our Grade 4 students embarked on an enlightening trip to Kariba, while the Grade 5 students went on an adventure that nurtured their curiosity and zest for learning. The leadership camp to Nyanga for our Grade 6 students was an enriching experience, teaching them essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.

Cultural Exchange: Embracing Global Connections In July, we organised our first-ever cultural exchange program in New Delhi, India, fostering cross-cultural understanding and embracing global connections. Three of our students, Nicole Lufeli, Kekona Chinhara, and Ruvimbo Muonde, accompanied by Mrs K. Chipadza and myself, embarked on this remarkable journey. We visited schools in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, namely Bright Scholars Senior Secondary and James School International, where we engaged in enriching cultural exchange activities. During our visit, we had the unique opportunity to witness the opening of an e-village, a testament to India’s technological advancements and commitment to digital transformation. We explored significant landmarks, including the magnificent Taj Mahal, immersing ourselves in the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Highlighting the significance of the arts in fostering global connections, our Performing Arts department are embarking on yet another international journey. The Choice Children’s Choir will compete in the World Choir Games. Some of our students are in this choir.

This exciting adventure allows our students to showcase their talents on a global platform while engaging with students from different cultural backgrounds. Accompanied by Mr Mutasa, Ms Makonza, and myself, this trip is a testament to our commitment to exposing our children to diverse global experiences and nurturing them as global citizens. By participating in these cultural exchange programs, our students gain invaluable insights into different cultures, broadening their perspectives and nurturing empathy and understanding.

These experiences contribute to their personal growth and equip them with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. As an institution, we firmly believe in the transformative power of cultural exchange, and we will continue to provide such opportunities to our students, empowering them to become true global citizens. Spellbound: Our Spelling Bee Stars We made a significant mark in the Harare province Spelling Bee competition, with eight of our students qualifying for the Zimbabwe National Finals. This achievement was no small feat, considering the intense competition. Four of our students made it into the top twenty, with two of our Grade 6 girls, Tawananyasha Madziva and Princess Munetsi, distinguishing themselves by making it into the top 10 out of 200 contestants across Zimbabwe. Tawananyasha further proved her mettle by making it to the top 5. These achievements underscore our students’ hard work, dedication, and talent. In Conclusion: A Year to Remember As we bid adieu to 2023, we are filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for our students’ achievements, the resilience they have shown, and the

growth they have experienced. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated staff, whose tireless efforts and unwavering support have been instrumental in our students’ successes. As we reflect on the remarkable achievements of the academic year 2023, we are reminded of the importance of holistic education that encompasses academic excellence, cultural immersion, sporting achievements, and artistic expression. Looking forward to 2024, we remain committed to providing our students with a balanced, comprehensive, and enriching educational experience. We anticipate another year of learning, growth, and success and are excited about the opportunities and challenges that await us. Our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals remains unwavering, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunities and accomplishments that lie ahead in the coming year. In conclusion, we extend our gratitude to all the students, parents, staff, and community members who have contributed to the success of our institution. Together, we celebrate the triumphs of 2023 and embark on a new chapter filled with growth, learning, and a shared vision of excellence. I am reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Let us continue to wield this weapon wisely, empowering our students to be the change-makers of tomorrow. Yours in Education Dr. Patricia Gonde Head of Academics

FUN DRIVEN ECD LESSONS

Our departmental theme for this year was “Science”. We chose this theme because there is no better way to learn than to play, explore, observe and analyse the things around us. This theme gave us an opportunity to explore food science, astronomy, water and animals in a fun and exciting way that kept our little ones engaged and excited to learn throughout the year.

We’ve had another wonderful year in our ECD Department this year. In January 2023, we welcomed 36 new ECD A students and 14 new ECD B students. We are excited to have seen both these groups of students grow taller and smarter and we feel very confident that they are ready for the next stage in their academic careers.

To further enhance our students’ learning experience, we visited various places for our educational trips including, Wild is Life, Birds at 30, and Mooland. These educational trips are rewarding because they give students an appreciation and renewed respect for their communities. Students also visited Jump Zim and Tamba Tamba, which allowed them to play and relax with their peers.

theme, which gave the students a first-hand experience of the different activities we can find on a cruise ship. I would like to thank my dedicated ECD team for all their hard work and patience in shaping the minds of our students. Each teacher brings a unique perspective to learning and they continue to provide the students with modern classroom experiences that cultivate learning. Our teachers continue to enrol in professional development courses which encourage them to learn new skills that keep them motivated in the classroom. We look forward to a great year ahead with more to explore and discover!

Keeping lessons fun in our department is a huge priority. This year students participated in Bike Day, where all students brought in a bicycle and learnt all about road safety. We also had a Cruise Ship Day to end our transport

department can read and write legibly using cursive handwriting. We encourage our children to think outside the box. In this regard our children did great projects on varied topics in Science and Heritage Social Studies subjects.

This year has been another busy and enjoyable year. We started by welcoming fifty-eight students from ECD B into Grade 1. Fifty-six students graduated from Grade 1 to Grade 2.

This year our Grade 1s and 2s went for educational tours. The grade 1s went to Mwanga Lodge in Shamva and Mooland in Mazoe. The Grade 2s went to Mbizi Game Park and Mwanga Lodge. They had a lot of exposure and enriched their learning from these trips. Thus, learning is not only confined to the classroom but can be outside as well. We nurture our learners to be responsible and compassionate. To put this into practice our learners visited and donated a lot of clothing and food items to Kasipiti Children’s Home which is in our neighbourhood. It was a great experience for the young ones. A big thank you to our parents for the donations, thereby supporting a noble cause.

Our department is comprised of four lady teachers who are highly qualified, dedicated and are very compassionate in nurturing learners at this tender age. Our departmental motto is Reader, Writer, and Problem Solver. This motto suits very well the ethos of the department which are reading, writing, and numeracy. As infant classes, we lay the foundation for all the skills covered in both Zimsec and Cambridge Syllabi. We teach and develop the literacy and numeracy skills which learners use forever in their lives. For our reading we use the phonetic approach basing our teaching on letter land and for our handwriting we use cursive. I am proud to say that all our pupils in the

I would like to thank my dedicated Infants team for their passion and guidance in nurturing these young students throughout the year. They are a vibrant team with each one bringing her unique skills and expertise to make the department successful. We are excited to pass on our Grade 2s to the middle department. We have witnessed them mature and their confidence grow through their Assembly and Allied Arts Presentations. The highlight of their confidence was their spectacular showcase of the Nativity play at their Prize Giving Ceremony. We believe we have instilled in them the necessary educational and life skills for them to tackle the next phase in their educational journey. For the current Grade 1s we continue to nurture them academically and in confidence. We wish them all the best as they progress to Grade 2.

Finally, I would like to thank our Board of Directors and Management for all the support. A special mention goes to the departmental staff who have worked tirelessly to educate and mould these young ones to where they are today. To our students, you have been amazing. Keep on soaring high in your educational endeavours, this is only the beginning. To our parents, thank you for all the support you have given us throughout the year. I am delighted to share with you a brief report highlighting our department’s achievements in academics and the successful educational trips undertaken by our students. Additionally, I would like to outline future plans that aim to enhance staff development within the department.

Academic Excellence: Themes for the year. i) Educational Excellence ii) Reading for comprehension iii) Fostering cursive writing through continuous practice

The Middle Department is a critical transitional area at Lusitania Primary School. It is comprised of two classes of Grade three, two classes of Grade four and three classes of Grade five. There is a total of seven classes and seven teachers. The teachers are Mrs S. Maphosa, Mrs C. Munhenga, Ms Kanyangarara, Mr P. Mutasa, Mr J. Mafaune, Mrs T. Muchetu and Ms N. Sabau

The Middle Primary Department has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in both the Cambridge and ZIMSEC curricula. Life skills topics include morals and values, discipline, personal hygiene, the effects of bullying, and responsibility are taught to nurture hunhu/ ubuntu. The middle department took the lead in organising a successful drug abuse awareness event, with support from other departments.

Having received learners from the Infant Department, it guides their transition into mid-level primary education and prepares their smooth transition into upper primary education. It is therefore important for the department to employ robust and innovative teaching/learning practices to ensure that the gains from the Infant Department 38 This Page is Proudly sponsored by Mahubo Family

Our dedicated and passionate teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure that our students receive a wellrounded education and are adequately prepared for their future academic endeavors. The commitment and hard work of both students and teachers have resulted in commendable accomplishments and exceptional grades across all classes.

It was a lovely experience for the learners as they embarked on an educational journey to Mukuwisi Woodlands and Lonely Park Dairy Farm. For some Learners, it was their first visit to a farm. Lonely Farm is well known for producing dairy products. Learners were taken through the stages involved in milking the cows and the processing of yogurt and cheese. They were also taught about farm machinery which is a part of their ZIMSEC curricula.

Educational Trips: In line with our commitment to holistic education, the Middle Primary Department organized memorable educational trips.

Curriculum Professional Development: We believe that investing in the continuous professional development of our teachers is the best way to ensure that our students receive the best possible education. We plan to organise workshops and training sessions involving the ICT Department, Infants, and Upper Primary focusing on innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum enhancement, and effective classroom management techniques. These initiatives will enable our teachers to further enhance their skills and keep pace with the evolving educational landscape. Future plans We aim to improve modern technology in classrooms to promote interactive and engaging learning experiences for our students. Additionally, we plan to establish partnerships with other Departments to facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaborative projects, fostering a culture of innovation and global awareness among our students. In conclusion, the Middle Primary Department continues to flourish academically while providing our students with exciting opportunities to explore the world beyond textbooks. We extend our sincere gratitude to the school administration, parents, and our dedicated teaching staff for their unwavering support and commitment to the success of our department. We eagerly look forward to a successful academic year ahead, filled with more achievements and remarkable experiences for our students. Head of Middle Primary Department C.P. Munhenga

Upper Primary Department

Nuggets from Upper Primary The Department received 58 students from the Middle Department into Grade 6. It is amazing to see how the learners have developed and settled into Upper Primary. Indeed, the year has been decorated with cultural and academic activities for both Grade 6 s and 7 s.

The Grade 7” s embarked on an educational trip to the Meteorological Department. They got to explore the different weather instruments and their uses. During the second term they toured the Parliament of Zimbabwe where they got to learn about the House of Assembly and the Senate.

their schools of choices which include, Hellenic, which offered scholarship to our superb athlete, St Georges College, Chisipite Senior, Arundel ,Peterhouse Boys and Girls as well as Lomagundi College .

Learners also took part in Allied Arts Poem competitions and scooped high grades. The highest grade being Upper First. Cultural Activities marked the year 2023. Learners participated in Africa Day and Portuguese Day activities with pride and commitment. The theme for Carnival was cartoon characters and the Grade 6 s and 7s did not disappoint. They put up an excellent skill of creativity showing that they were the seniors in the school. From the dress code, choreography of presentation and the food displays and traditional utensils used. The year sailed through smoothly for the Grade 6” s. They welcomed Ruvarashe and Jacob to the stream who settled in easily due to the friendly and accommodative nature of our students .The first term was a bit rocky as the learners adjusted to the Upper Primary pressure. The introduction of CALA brought in a lot of anxiety to the learners. However, the supportive and experienced teachers equipped them with the necessary skills to cope with the pressure. The support learners got from home was commendable. We appreciate the parents for providing a strong support system for our learners. Most learners produced good and informative models. To the Grade 7s Class 0f 2023 it has been an absolute joy. You have worked hard academically and culturally. You have built a strong foundation which will enable you to succeed in High School! Recorder Lessons

Introduction

The music department recognises the value of music education and offers compulsory recorder lessons to its Grade one to seven students. Through these lessons, young learners are introduced to the world of music, honing their skills, and discovering their musical talents. The recorder program provides a solid foundation for musical development which enhances motor skills development, reading music and hand and eye coordination. Some of our students participated in the National Institute of Allied Arts Vocal and Instrumental Eisteddfods. In 2023, five students took part in recorder Grade one and two and there were awarded honours, two first plus, first and second plus grades.

In the realm of education, the importance of a wellrounded curriculum that nurtures students’ creativity and cultural awareness cannot be overstated. At Lusitania Primary School, the Culture Department stands as a shining example of fostering artistic expression and celebrating diversity, offering a plethora of enriching activities, from recorder lessons and class choirs to jazz and marimba bands, school plays, clubs visual arts, and an array of vibrant internal and external festivals and competitions. This department has become a vibrant hub of artistic exploration and cultural exchange.

School Choirs The melodious sound of voices coming together in perfect harmony is a testament to the power of choral music. At our school we always say, “Music has always been part of us”. As such our class choirs provide students with an opportunity to explore their vocal abilities, develop their musicality, and build a sense of unity and community. Through regular rehearsals and performances on all school functions, festivals and competitions, our students experience the joy of collective singing and learn valuable skills such as teamwork and discipline. Our school has so far won ten major honours grades and six trophies in the past six years for our Grade three to five class choirs and our Junior mixed choir. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication from our students and teachers. Lusitania was recognised by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe for championing the development of Arts in Zimbabwe. This recognition came through after the school produced students who went to compete, representing Zimbabwe, at the World Games in 2018. Our students travelled to Lisbon in Portugal to represent the school and Zimbabwe once again on the global stage. Marimba and Jazz Ensemble For those inclined towards jazz and percussion, our music department offers development opportunities for both jazz and marimba bands. These ensembles provide a platform for budding musicians to explore improvisation, expand their repertoire, and develop their instrumental skills. With regular rehearsals and performances, students gain a deep understanding of jazz and world music, fostering a love for these genres and honing their artistic abilities. Our jazz band has performed at Arundel Village One Life Dance Festival as well as at school functions. Our marimba band also performed at the school functions and the National Institute of Allied Arts Music festival in which they were awarded a second plus grade.

School Musical “Tut Tut” The performing arts are in our DNA as they take centre stage at Lusitania through captivating school plays. Infused with creativity and imagination, these productions allow students to showcase their acting skills, stage presence, and storytelling abilities. This year our school musical was “Tut Tut”, a story which was inspired by the royal life of the Pharaohs of Egypt. A record one hundred and ten students took part in the categories of drama, chorus, and dance. Whether it is the magical world of fairy tales or thought-provoking dramas, school plays provide a platform for students to express themselves, gain confidence, and foster a deep appreciation for the performing arts. Visual Arts The visual art department recognizes the importance of visual arts in nurturing creativity and selfexpression. Through various mediums such as painting, sculpture, and mixed media, students are encouraged to explore their artistic abilities and develop their unique artistic voices. Art lessons At Lusitania provide a supportive environment where students can experiment, learn new techniques, and showcase their artwork through exhibitions and displays. 2023 has been a busy and exciting ride for the Art department, from working tirelessly behind the scenes on staging and décor for all cultural events to participating in national competitions and upgrading our own school campus. We enjoyed transporting our audience to Egypt for Tut Tut, the highlight of Lusitania’s cultural calendar. Upgrades to our art room, the library, and around our school campus at large are ongoing projects to which we remain committed. We are so proud of all our students who participated in this year’s National Institute of Allied Arts Visual Art Festival. work was highly commended. Two of our seniors, Rolland Chindavata in Grade Six, and Jerome Sewera in Grade Seven deserve special congratulations as both boys attained honours grades for their artwork and had their work on display at the NIAA Visual Art Festival Exhibition at Hartmann House. We are looking forward to the final events of the third term. Preparations for the Infants Nativity Play, a firm favourite of ours, are well under way. We are excited to show off Lusitania’s talent at our first Annual Art Exhibition. Celebrating Diversity and Cultures Our department takes pride in organising a diverse range of festivals that celebrate cultures from around the world. From the vibrant Eisteddfod Music Festival to the exuberant Carnival, Africa Day Celebrations, Portuguese Day Celebrations and festive Carols, these events serve as platforms for cultural exchange, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for different traditions. All students actively participate in these festivals, showcasing their talents and embracing the richness of global cultures.

Portuguese Department Lusitânia is a Portuguese school that promotes the speaking of Portuguese language and culture via innovative teaching methods for our pupils from Preschool up to Grade seven. We introduce pupils to the fundamentals of Portuguese, using words and themes integral to children’s daily lives such as colours, shapes, counting and foods. Animation, live action, and fun music engage the child’s natural love of play and keep their focus and attention. Pupils are exposed to books written by various Portuguese authors from all Portuguese speaking countries. The stories are written using simple clear Portuguese and are intended for children learning Portuguese as a foreign language. We also integrate technology into the teaching and learning process using Google Classrooms, Microsoft Teams, Jam Board, Kahoot and Power Point presentations. The Portuguese Department is supported by the Institute Camões through the placement of a Portuguese Teacher from Portugal at Lusitânia who prepares the pupils for the International EPE ( Teaching Portuguese Abroad) certificate Level A1-B (11-14 Years) written at the Grade six level. Our pupils have done very well in this exam.

CARNAVAL – Every year in February before the beginning of lent we celebrate Carnaval. In Portugal, Carnaval is the biggest festival of the year and draws people from around the world. It signals the end of winter and ushers in the religious period of giving up meat (lent). It is day full of fun and dance as children put-on fancydress costumes and participate in a parade to choose the best dressed and performing classes. Each year the department chooses a theme for the Carnival fancydress parade. This year it was Cartoon Characters.

Portuguese Day- Every tenth of June we celebrate Portuguese Day, officially the day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, (Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas). It is celebrated throughout the world, and it commemorates the death of Luís de Camões a Poet and a national literary icon who died on the 10th June 1580. During that period, we dedicate our time to teaching our pupils Portuguese songs, dances, poems and plays that portray the history and culture of Portugal. This year the theme was Portugal Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow (Portugal Hoje, Ontem e Amanhã). The Portuguese Community and parents come to celebrate this beautiful day with us.

World Choir Games in Lisbon, Portugal: A Global Showcase In an exciting development, our school has ten students who are part of a community children’s choir which has students from other schools and the choir of thirty choristers will compete in the prestigious World Choir Games to be held in Lisbon. This international event will bring together choirs from around the globe, providing an unparalleled opportunity for students to showcase their vocal talents on a global stage. This esteemed event will not only enhance their musical skills but also foster cultural understanding and forge lasting connections with young artists from different nations. Lusitania’s Culture Department is a testament to the school’s commitment to providing a holistic education that embraces artistic expression and celebrates cultural diversity. Through its recorder lessons, class choirs, jazz and marimba bands, school plays, visual arts, and vibrant festivals, students are nurtured to become wellrounded individuals with a deep appreciation for the arts and an understanding of the world’s diverse cultures. By participating in the World Choir Games in Lisbon, our students will embark on an unforgettable journey that will shape their artistic journey and broaden their global perspectives. Mathematics Remedial Department

The Mathematics Remedial Department is in essence a (Learner Support Centre) that offers one-on-one tuition to all pupils at different learning stages. We deal with the specific needs diagnosed by teachers during the week. There are no permanent remedial groups. Our intention is to correct errors and improve one ‘s skills in mathematics. Remediation helps to get the student back on track so they can continue their learning with confidence. It means that we will be working with students who might be missing the foundational skills required for learning higher level concepts.

We go back to the concrete when we realize that a student is facing learning distortions. We address any learning gaps. Berry Mazarura Consultant

We use methods that are dedicatedly made to help students that face difficulty in catching up with concepts or are not able to match the pace of their classmates. LUSITANIA PRIMARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2023

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department

Welcome to the heart of the school: the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department. The department’s motto is “Aspire to inspire,” and it strives to make every activity it hosts unique and memorable. Lusitania’s ICT department is in Zimbabwe, Africa, but it operates with a global perspective. 2023 is a blessed year with no COVID-19 lockdowns. Pupils are enjoying one-asto-one use of desktop computers in the computer lab and the use of tablet computers in their respective classes. The department is well equipped with 21st century compliant equipment which even spills over to the classrooms. Pupils no longer know what a greenboard or a blackboard is. This is because all classrooms are equipped with interactive smartboards which are all loaded with educational programes and other application programes which are used during the teaching and learning process. Our school has a wide range of equipment and software, including Microsoft licenses for all students and

staff. This makes it easy for everyone to hold online educational meetings and access homework 24/7. We believe that learning should not be limited to traditional classrooms, so we offer hybrid learning programmes that allow students to learn both physically at school and online at home or when traveling. Students also have the opportunity to learn coding using different programming and scripting languages, such as Scratch, Arduino, Python, and HTML. In addition to their regular ICT lessons, Lusitania students have the opportunity to participate in ICT-related clubs, such as the drone club, the robotics club, and the computer club (hard coding/web development). These clubs help students to develop their ICT skills and knowledge and to appreciate the importance of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and robotics in our increasingly technological world. We expect to receive the ZIMSEC, CHISZ Computers, and IC3 Spark (Microsoft) examination results before the end of

the year, and we are confident that our students will achieve many distinctions. To top it all off, the ICT department ended the year with a bang. On October 12, 2023, the department hosted a “Memorable Movie Night for Tech Advancement” on the Lusitania Primary School Main Sports Field. The movie was a hit, and everyone left asking for more events like it. It was truly a “Memorable Movie Night.” The department would like to thank the dear Lord for being our shepherd throughout the year. Glory be to God the Almighty. Our sincere gratitude also goes to the Lusitania Board of Governors (BOG), Lusitania management, staff, parents and guardians, pupils, suppliers and all Lusitania stakeholders who supported the department throughout the year. Obrigado!

Lusitania Primary School Sports Department Physical activity is vital to the holistic development of children, fostering their physical, social and emotional health. Each child is expected to take part in sporting activities. Lusitania offers a full and diverse range of sport to suit all abilities and interests. Our sport is carefully tailored to each age group, focused on enjoyment and integrating activity as part of health and wellbeing. Lusitania is known for high levels of sporting achievement, and we do provide an environment for children to excel. Many of our children go on to represent provincial and national teams. However, the foundation of our ethos is to provide every learner with the opportunity to fulfil his or her sporting aspirations at whatever level.

Developments in the sports department •

The positive attitude towards sports amongst students has continued to grow. There is belief and a winning mentality amongst all sports teams and some of the sporting results are evident of that. Assessment of athletes has been ongoing throughout the year. Sports colours awards is being used as a tool to encourage and motivate students to reach their full potential.. We have recently introduced splash ball, basketball and rugby as sports with fixtures.
