Three artists. This was the challenge facing editorial staff as they sat down together in early March for a brainstorming session. Pick three local artists, independent of galleries and any criteria besides sheer worthiness, who are rising stars. Handfuls of names were tossed about and it was determined that these three emerging artists bring vision into fruition through that peculiar dance of heart, hand and grace inherent in the art making of the masters. 24 • www.galleryguideoftaos.com
Dinah Worman « Painter
A
devoted and acclaimed landscape painter and pastel artist for 30 years, Dinah Worman has a consistent following for her composition and color rich landscapes. And a few years ago her work shifted – after a sight that riveted her from an Oklahoma highway. “I had to flip a u-ey, come back and it was just stunning, they were arranged perfectly,” she says, flashing a weathered photo of a few dozen cows assembled in front of an Oklahoma barn.

I couldn’t stay in the box.” Her painting “History of a Field” won Coors best in show at that exhibit in January 2013 and since then there’s been non-stop demand for her new work. Her studio was nearly devoid of work when I visited because it’s all being shown.
Worman’s continuing to push limits with her work. She’s been taking aerial shots from a friend’s private plane and swooning over the results. One of her photos of the St. Francis church that reveals a crossshaped roof has already inspired a painting. “I’ve been wanting to go up for years but I couldn’t get up the nerve. I was terrified but once we got going it was fine,” she says. They’ve been over Los Ojos, “I thought I might get into trouble because they were the Gorge and around Truchas. Inspiration brews and so different from my past style. When I went to deliver who knows what innovations lie ahead. “Cow Against Red” is one of about 30 paintings inspired by this photo. A bright red barn envelopes the foreground and a cow stares at you like you might have food and his friend meanders off the canvas, offering a glimpse of only his rear. Oil paint is thickly laid with a palette knife, hinting at other layers of reality residing beneath the blanket of color.

M
aria Samora’s jewelry resonates with the pulse of nature. A ring features a tiny diamond basking at the center of two leaf-like layers, of matte gold and silver slightly off center. Flat darkened silver squares climb in and around each other as they dangle from ears, linked together through circles cut into the center of each. Her work exudes femininity, strength and gentleness in harmony. As I drew closer to the delicate gold necklace/earring set with diamonds peeking from the center of each, I felt my heart warm the way it does when a small child smiles at me as they pass by, that kind of purity and simplicity that draws you closer and makes your day.
One of her clutch purses, which won first place at the Heard Museum Indian Market a couple of years ago, was crafted using a Korean technique called Keum-boo, where 24k gold is fused onto sterling silver. 700 of these small squares were hand burnished, textured and then woven together to create a meshlike pattern. The inside is lined with buckskin and Chinese silk.
“A lot of times jewelers will find something they’re good at and that’s their signature and what they do for their artwork. But I get really tired of doing something over and over and so I’m constantly learning new

petro hul « sculptor “For me, each piece is a discovery, each stone is unique...”

etro Hul’s stone sculptures brought me to a place beyond words and I enjoyed this connection with beauty that seemed to bypass my brain for several minutes.
“You can touch them,” said Jerry Warman of Hulse-Warman gallery, arousing me from my meditation. My fingers approached “Crossroads” with care, like it was a sentient black marble being (who knows?) and travelled valleys and creases that wound around the sci-fi-mountain-like chunk. I floated over to “Inverted Alternative,” cupped my hand over the smooth nose-like protrusion
I’d been eyeing, then glided onto streaked and sandpapery textures that met with more smooth and then jagged edges. I looked at my hand to see if it picked up any of the glittery flecks. Of course it didn’t. Textures have become increasingly prevalent in Hul’s work in recent years. “To me it’s the living mark of the process- like when I look at rough landscapes and see marks left by different geologic processes. If I used a saw I leave marks of the saw, if I used a chisel, marks of the chisel,” he says. Outside of Hulse Warmanare two prominent dauber pieces. The mud dauber series, and aspects that make their way into a number of pieces, arose from a walk in nature he took when he lived back east, to decide the subject for his next sculpture. He went to the river and after sitting there he heard a buzzing, turned his head around and saw wasps building a nest on the underside of a stone. “I sat there for two hours watching. It was amazing how they’d fly in with a piece of mud, put it on, pack it in. It looked like several of them were working on it,” he says. “I saw very little change in that time and I thought ‘I can’t imagine the amount of time they’re putting into this.’” His works vary in size from a few inches to the 5 foot tall piece he’s currently carving from travertine. “For me, each piece is a discovery, each stone is unique almost like dealing with different people,” he says. “A lot of times I have no idea where I’m going. It’s almost like how you can say I’m going out to the coffee shop – or you can go out and say ‘I have no idea where I’m going and no idea where I’ll end up.’”

I
ra Lujan speaks of his glass art as a form of prayer. From start to finish, Lujan’s vision of what he is creating must be masterfully held in his mind and hands. Otherwise, it breaks. Raised in Albuquerque, Lujan spent time as a child at his grandfather’s ranch in Taos Pueblo, influencing both his approach to art and his subject matter. “I’ll think of a story first, and have a picture in my mind,” said Lujan, referencing the Pueblo’s oral storytelling tradition, recreating in glass, objects that are part of tribal life. These include water jugs, basket forms and ceremonial objects such as rattles, headdresses and masks. Lujan sculpts human figures with specific features or engaged in activities such as carrying water, that identify them with tribal life. “It’s a spiritual kind of thing — breathing light into an art form which also holds the nature of light,” Lujan remarks. In 1999 in Oregon, Lujan wandered into the glass factory of the Eugene Glass School and became mesmerized by working with glass.

“I was fascinated with how it was moving and what it could do ... I was instantly drawn to it, the way the glassworkers were pulling it and cutting it with different tools.” Lujan began studying the art of glass blowing. “It became second nature to me right away,” he shared. When he returned to Taos, Lujan studied and apprenticed with Tony Jojola. From Isleta Pueblo, Jojola is considered one of the premier American Indian artists working in the glass blowing medium. Lujan continued his education at the Pilchuck Glass School, Eugene Glass School, and Pittsburgh Glass Center, studying with glass artists Preston Singletary, Marcus Amerman, Ross Richmond, Karen Wilenbrink-Johnsen and Kelly O’Dell.

ecently, he has been creating knives in glass that mimic flint-knapped blades, and experimenting texturing pieces with glass dots that resemble beads. He forms them by touching a thread of hot glass onto a sculpted piece, such as one of his glass knives, where he first created a “beaded” handle. Each “bead” must be perfectly placed the first time. “It’s a one shot thing,” says Lujan. “If you misplace a bead, you can’t take the bead off. You have to have the pattern already and just go for it.” Few American Indians are glassblowers. But glass beads have a long tradition in American Indian art. The original beads of America were made from shell and porcupine quills. Brought to the continent by early European settlers, glass beads became popular trade
items coveted by many tribes who used them to decorate moccasins, dresses and other ceremonial or everyday items. “As one of the few Native American glassblowers in the world, I’d like to actually spread the word about Native American glass, and inspire other Native Americans to try out the medium in their art endeavors,” Lujan says. He sees it as a way that American Indians can breathe life into an art that is dying around the rest of the world. The bulk of Lujan’s work, including some of his early pieces, is displayed in Taos at Henningsen Fine Art, 235 Morada Lane, (575) 758-1434. Lujan’s work will be featured in a show at Henningsen this June. Lujan’s work is also displayed at William & Joseph Gallery in Santa Fe and at Adagio Gallery in Palm Desert, Calif.

A
few months after I moved to Taos I went on an epic hike up Italianos, a well-loved trail a few miles before the Village of Taos Ski Valley. Wild flowers were in bloom and the trail wound back and forth over a river. I’d reached my limit and stopped to rest. A group of ladies whizzed past me, with wide grins, commented on the gorgeous day and wished me well. They were easily 40 years my elders. I relayed this story to a friend back east and he said “Wow, it seems like people in Taos live young.” Adventures de Taos keep us young. They rile us up from bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday to hike Wheeler Peak before the afternoon monsoon. They put the ecstatic
in our smiles when we awaken to a blanket of powder and go dashing to the shed for our snow shoes. They keep our hearts pounding as we rise above the Gorge in a hot air balloon. Adventures de Taos is the 2013 marketing theme, as determined by the Town of Taos, and enacted by all who dare to amplify their experience of life. A professional photographer for over 30 years, Geraint Smith has been sharing his love and knowledge of the art form, and for Northern New Mexico landscapes, for the last four years through his personalized and customized photography tours, unique adventures that weave nature and artistic expression of it.

The idea sprouted after taking a few friends out, with cameras in tow, to some of his favorite spots. One thing led to another and now he leads about three dozen tours a year to folks from as far away as Spain and South America as well as to a handful of locals. “My goal is to help people find their own vision for photography,” says Geraint. “Some already have a vision but they haven’t necessarily discovered what it means for them.” Geraint spent his childhood in Wales and Yorkshire, England, where his interest in photography and filmmaking began to sprout. At 22 he moved to Los Angeles to study cinematography and realized that his
true love lay in still photography and ©Pamela Morgan since then he has built an extensive commercial and artistic resume. Taos became his home in 1988 and he opened his gallery in town a couple of years ago. “What I discovered, living in the Southwest with its wide open spaces, is just how much room there is in me to remember and rediscover the peace and center of my soul,” he writes on his website. “I have learned that the beauty all around me is a reminder of the vast beauty inside me ... much of which is still waiting to be explored.”

Trips vary in length from half a day to four days and he welcomes all levels of skill from novice to professional. Sometimes clients schedule months in advance and other times they stop in his studio with a spontaneous inspiration and he’ll close the shop and head for the hills.
