Do you want a magazine rack, a shelf with books, a candle? Should there be a window? Aesthetics and function merge when considering design from ceiling to floor. Lighting is a critical element. Magee suggests incorporating “a layered lighting plan, where you have practical, functional lighting as your base.” Task and under-cabinet lighting can “enhance the performance of the kitchen.” Dimmable LED lights create a mood. Sink fixtures modify the style of the kitchen, as do the hardware selected for cabinets. The backsplash is a feature that allows the owner to express their personality and taste. In the Des Montes house, contemporary fixtures provide a contrast to a textured clay backsplash, which evoke undulations along the water’s edge and rippled sedimentary stone. Magee points out that countertops affect the “overall look of the cabinets.” A solid surface is the current trend, whether it’s natural stone – such as the unique polychrome quartzite in the El Salto house – or made of composite stone. This engineered surface contains crushed stone – often quartz or marble – formed into a slab with adhesive or resin. When it comes to flooring, the “industry standard is a durable floor,” says Magee. “It’s a high-traffic area with potential spills and moisture,” where tile and cement excel. DeSanto observes that while these materials are popular choices, a natural, well-sealed hardwood can also be hard-wearing and comfortable under foot.

Seating in and adjacent to the kitchen is typically a reflection of what the user finds familiar. This might include island seating, allowing household members or guests to interact with whomever is working in the kitchen, or a breakfast nook for a quick meal. COMMUNITY PROFILE The town of Red River bustles along the Red River, a mountain tributary to the Rio Grande. The settlement’s elevation is 8,750 feet, and it’s surrounded by Carson National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The climate ranges from winter lows below 0 to summer highs in the 70s. Thunderstorms often roll through on summer afternoons. Gold miners first settled the area in the mid-1800s. These days, the local economy relies upon winter tourists who ski and snowboard, plus summer tourists who come to hike, mountain bike, drive ATVs and relax in the cool temperatures. kitchens, especially in those cultures where food is important. (I mean you, Italians and Jews, although by no means are they the only folks who love to eat and entertain.) When we designed our kitchen we had some help from a lot of people but ultimately it was up to us to determine how much we could spend and where we wanted to put those dollars. For us getting a double wall oven and a generous cooktop with six burners were more important than using some of that money to buy “label” appliances. HAVING DONE a major remodel of a building we own on Placitas, and turning what had been a commercial building into a home ( "Light, Bright & Happy", Issue 130 ), I can speak from some experience about kitchens and bathrooms. They were the most expensive rooms to create because we were essentially starting from scratch. There was no kitchen at all in the 2200 square foot structure and the master bath consisted of a cheap toilet. To me, by nature, they are the rooms that require the most attention to design and cost and where creativity pays off. Bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms require furniture and art, and that can become expensive, but the fixtures and appliances that make up kitchens and bathrooms require budgets for most of us, and the rooms where one can get carried away if one has the money to do so. Also, while bathrooms can be personal and it is possible no one sees the inside of them but the owners and users, most everyone gets to see

But the key to creating a great kitchen is to find the right cabinetmaker and fabricator. We knew from having worked with Jorge Vasquez before that he was a very talented and creative woodworker who charged fair prices. We hired him to build all of our cabinets in both the kitchen and bathroom and we could not be happier with the result. We did not know Guillermo Lopez, a fabricator, but got his name from Jorge and again from Jimmy Cisneros who is one of the men I respect most in my life. Guillermo turned out to be another skilled man whose word was his bond and, while not cheap, was worth every penny we paid him. They needed to work in tandem and did so seamlessly. I called them my estrellas or stars, because that is what they were. Both men approached the job as if it was for them. Everything had to be perfect as that is what my honey requires. And both came through in every respect. We found that a refrigerator with a bottom freezer gave us the most generous space for the way we live. A side by side was just not generous enough. And boy did the double oven and fridge become even more important as Panamigos came into my life, rather organically, but I could not do what I do for our bread friends without both. I have had six baking trays of to-be-baked breads and bagels in the fridge at one time and if we had half shelves, like in a side by side, I never could be as productive as I’ve become. The same is true for the double oven. I can bake four breads at a time and several dozen chocolate chip cookies. But I digress. If you are creating a master bath, I do have a few ideas that worked for us and I consider important — again — if it fits your budget. My honey insisted we have a tub. We made that work spatially and financially. She also wanted a frameless shower door, which was a great idea as the shower is light and bright and fun to be in. Somehow a toilet is a toilet but a great shower will help sell your home when you need to. A door is a good thing on the commode room if you have the space and a double sink is really important to most buyers. We had a grand old time getting this remodel done but the kitchen and bathrooms remain rooms we are most proud of. And are great for the purposes intended. Of course having someone like Jed Magee on your team is a terrific way to go but we pulled the permit ourselves and it all worked out for the best.
