aren Todd describes herself as a “thread in the fabric of the Taos community.” A transplant from Chicago who came here to ski over two decades ago, she stayed to raise her family. Since then, she has fed those who came through her Dragonfly Café, stopped by her Taos Farmers Market bakery stand and enjoyed her catered meals. Between parenting here and feeding locals and visitors alike, she has indeed become interwoven into the community.

Todd has worked with Berkshire Hathaway for two years. She, along with Jamie Clifford, formed the Dragonfly Group in 2021. This team handles “a little bit of everything,” from modest homes to multimillion dollar estates. She knows the nuances of the area and the rhythm of life here, allowing her to represent buyers and sellers with ease. Karen, who lives on a rural property in San Cristobal, also understands the needs of her farmer, homesteader and rancher clients.

“It’s beautiful to be able to introduce people to our community, or help our community members upsize or downsize, given changes in their lives,” she notes, from older folks moving into town for convenience and walkability to families needing room(s) to grow.

When Karen describes a Southwest contemporary on Mesa Sea Road that she admires, she recounts “a repetition of pattern that was really unmistakable… rooms flowed from one to the other, seamlessly.” Todd is sensitive to the subtleties that create an ideal match between home and buyer. “I feel like every house is looking for the right person and making that connection is just so wonderful. When you walk into the right place with the right person, then everything seems to light up.” She helps clients navigate financing, inspections, “putting all those things in place” to take them to closing.

Those who work with Karen can expect that she will lead from the heart, bringing compassion to the unique challenges facing those hoping to buy or sell in Taos in the current market. Closings average five to six months to complete. Interest rates have increased while these transactions are on hold, at times exacerbating an already emotional experience. Still, Todd often develops relationships with her clients that last beyond the transaction.

Larger furniture pieces are just fine, Jones enthused. “If you put lots of small pieces in a small space, you’re actually making it feel too much like a doll house. I call this the ‘Barbie effect.’” Opt for fewer pieces of furniture and you’ll create a grander space.

2

Edit your accessories on tabletops, and in nooks and crannies. “Fewer pieces with a more curated look will make everything you’ve chosen feel more important,” and thus enhance the feeling of space, Jones noted.

Create a gallery wall on an otherwise awkward space. “Salon style works particularly well on that narrow wall you might overlook,” Walker said.

As counterintuitive as it may seem, Jones and Walker are fans of using large art in small spaces. “Large pieces that maximize the walls in a small space will give the illusion of a bigger room,” Jones said.

There is one last — important — piece of advice they offered, though it should go without saying: Buy only what you love.

Be consistent with color. “White or cream is always a great option in New Mexico, but if you’re inspired to use color on the walls, stay consistent with the palette of the space. Too many different colors will start to feel a tad busy and make it seem as if the walls are coming in,” Jones concluded.

Balance the lighting by ensuring the light source is consistent throughout the room, Jones continued. “This doesn’t mean making it ‘bright,’ but rather, making sure it is evenly-dispersed to create a flowing ambience.”

So, what did our professionals have to say? Plenty! Here are eight simple ways you can artfully decorate a small living space with your own personal style:

There is no doubt that living in a small space requires equal measures of mindfulness, creativity, flexibility and ingenuity. By staying true to your heart and following some savvy advice, you are sure to create the home of your dreams.

7 Add textiles for a more comfortable feel, the two recommend. Rugs, pillows and opulent fabrics will add coziness and intimacy. “If your space is small, it should be extra-livable,” Jones said.

If you are a true art collector, Walker recommends hanging your collection in the salon style, a practice that evolved from 19th century art school salons. “Collections can be arranged around your large piece, but if you have more pieces on the smaller side, then offset the large one and build a vignette around it.” Another favorite trick of Walker’s is “always go high. It draws the eye up and makes your ceiling look higher.”

For O’Brien, curiosity played a role in leading him from conventional home building in urban Detroit to exploring alternative building in unconventional, rural Taos. A copy of “The Straw Bale House” and the desire for small-town living in the mountains inspired Patrick, his wife and young son to dig roots here.
