At its core is a feelgood theme of generosity that not only unveiled a painting that had gone unseen by the public for 60 years but will also see the current museum double in size, rivaling the most expansive of regionspecific museum collections.

THE COFFEES APPROACHED COLEMAN and the museum board to determine if there was interest in accepting their collection as a gift, which included 150 pieces of artwork. “It’s hard to describe what that felt like,” said Coleman, of the expansive collective. “I think we are all in awe of the generosity of Janis and Roy.” “We wanted to accept the art and believed, like the Coffees, that it belonged in Taos, but we simply didn’t have adequate space. We didn’t even have proper storage,” explained Coleman, who, along with the museum’s Board, initiated a $2 million campaign to expand their space to accommodate the artwork and an all-new, climate-controlled storage vault with a fire-suppression system. In addition to the artwork, the Coffees donated $1.2 million toward the campaign.

The expansion includes a new 2,000-square-foot gallery that visitors will enter through a covered portal. A new art and archival building will ensure the museum’s collection is protected and secure, and the administrative space will be expanded to include a kitchen suitable for catered events. The expansion will also enable the museum staff and board to expand its national and international awareness, boosting the potential for long-term sustainability through increased revenue opportunities. Plans are to have the expansion completed in the summer of 2024. IT WAS THE SAME PLACE one of the murderous Hunter-Killer flying machines caught up with the young Kyle Reese in “Terminal Salvation” (2009), and it was also featured in the movies “White Sands” (1992), “The Signal” (2014), “Wild Hogs” (2007), “Backtrack” (1990) and “Twins” (1988), among others. Give up? Unless you’ve only seen it in the movies, we’re talking about the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge along US 64 west of Taos. The iconic symbol of a steel and concrete span over the precipitous wild river chasm may have only seemed dramatic or merely scenic to a director looking for a stunning shot typifying the American West, but to us who live here, it has a darker history — a place where far too many people have ended their lives, both by their own hand and as part of a crime. The movies, however, are rooted in fantasy, a cinematic dreamland where anything can — and often does — happen. In terms of how Taos fits into this, all it takes is a cursory overview of the movies that have helped to make this Northern New Mexican community so iconic.

ZOZOBRA IS A HUGE MARIONETTE figure set afire at the beginning of the Fiestas de Santa Fe to drive out doom and gloom. Hopper and Stockwell lived in Taos, on and off, for many years. When Hopper died in 2010, he chose to be buried in a small cemetery in Ranchos.

ANCIENT ALIENS With recent so-called revelations about UAP’s (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), it’s interesting to note that Taos has — for decades — been a hotbed of sightings and even mysterious animal mutilations. So, it makes sense that Hollywood might nose around a bit, even as far back as 1975. That’s when a TV movie was released called “Search for the Gods.” Obviously tapping into the pop culture interest surrounding a 1968 book by Erich von Däniken titled “Chariots of the Gods,” the movie followed the discovery of a mysterious medallion said to be connected to astronauts from another world who made contact with human beings in ancient times — namely early Native Americans. It starred Kurt Russell, Stephen McHattie, Ralph Bellamy and Victoria Racimo. Although Taos is referred to by an alternate name, the movie uses extensive locations — such as the old Taos County Courthouse on Albright Street before it was replaced by a large modern administrative-judicial complex in 2011. In the movie, it was the site of a museum. And, of course, the Rio Grande Gorge was featured as a site where another alien artifact was found. The movie was made as a pilot for a proposed TV series that never materialized. Maybe that was a good thing, because it likely would have encountered some questionable inferences to Native culture and history.

“Off the Map” (2003) was an independent film directed by Campbell Scott about a straight-arrow tax collector who shows up at the home of the Grodens, an off-the-grid, out-of-the-way family, and winds up converted by their down-to-earth counter-culture ways.

“A 1942 black-and-white Western movie titled “Valley of the Sun” was based on a serialized piece of fiction from the Saturday Evening Post by Clarence Budington Kelland,” this writer noted in a La Historia column for the Taos News in 2022. “The film became notable for one of its stars — Lucille Ball — and for its story taking a different angle regarding the depiction of the conflict between Native Americans and white settlers. “It was also notable for its cast, which featured many extras from the New Mexico Indian Pueblos of Taos, Santa Clara, Jemez, Ohkay Owingeh (known as San Juan at the time) and Tesuque. Landscape exteriors were largely filmed in the Taos and Santa Fe areas, plus some Arizona locations. Although the non-Native actors playing larger Native-esque roles were made to speak pidgin Indian; whenever a local extra had a chance to speak, they got to use their own tribal language. Thus, in one scene you’ll hear the Taos Pueblo greeting, ‘He-ya-ho.’”

The film was adapted by Joan Ackerman from her 1994 stage play that has been performed in Taos before the movie set up locations in and around the area. The crew even built a full-sized home set on a hillside above San Cristobal, north of Taos.

They also created a fictional K-Mart in the old Smith’s market at the corner of Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Siler Road where some locals wandered in curious about a new store in Taos (witnessed personally by this writer). It starred Joan Allen, Sam Elliott, Valentina de Angelis, Jim True-Frost, J.K. Simmons and Amy Brenneman. The movie, its crew and ultimately its embrace upon its release was celebrated by the Taos community.

n social media, after the article was published, many Taos Pueblo citizens posted references and memories of relatives who appeared in that movie. However, times have changed and ideas that were once commonplace are now considered offensive. Audiences today might be shocked to hear the blatantly racist first lines in “Valley of the Sun.” The scene features a group of American military soldiers escorting a group of Native men to a government official’s office in Old Tucson. As they pass a group of townsfolk, one man comments, “They oughta shoot those darn redskins while they got the chance.” His friend replies, “Yeah, sooner they get rid of them, the safer this country will be for us Americans.”

BELOVED FILM FESTIVAL Taos and its legendary place in film history and beyond is cemented as solidly as Pueblo Peak is upon our northern horizon. So, it’s no surprise that it would become a place that would celebrate film and filmmakers with a festival that, in a brief time, grew to enormous renown. In 1994, this writer, a Taos News arts editor at the time, had lunch with actor Joshua Bryant at Abe’s Cantina in Arroyo Seco to talk about an idea on which he’d been working. That idea turned out to be the Taos Talking Picture Festival, an event Bryant founded in April 1995 that exceeded all expectations. “After four years, it was named by writer Chris Gore as one of the top 10 film festivals in the world,” a media statement reads.

Over its run, it featured screenings of independent and world films, workshops and media literacy events that made headlines, and included appearances by celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, James Coburn, Sam Elliott, Susan Sarandon, Julia Roberts, Chris Eyre and many more. It was also notable for its Maverick Award, and its Taos Land Grant Award, in which the winner was given ownership of a piece of land near Taos. The event was so popular, the late-N.M. Gov. Bill Richardson often asked this writer, “when are they going to get that festival going again?” Unfortunately, after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, funding for the festival became more difficult to raise and, in 2003, the festival ended. Bryant and his wife, former actor Melissa Mullins, eventually moved to France.

ARTS & CULTURE 70 ART HISTORY THERE IS MUCH MORE TO THE STORY of this gallery owner, however. Menane is an accomplished musician whose work and friendships with major players in the country music scene are renowned. His 2021 CD release, “About Time,” was a project he put off for years until, he recalled of the title track, “I first played it for friends at a house-warming party we were having for Jessi Colter’s new home, using Waylon’s (Jennings, Colter’s late-husband) black acoustic guitar. It was then, from the comments I received, that I realized it was ‘written.’” Somberly, he noted, “Mentor Williams was like a brother to me,” until Williams’ death in 2016. Williams is best known for his hit song, “Drift Away,” and had lived with country/ crossover megastar Lynn Anderson in Taos. “Lynn always said we were like two spirits from the same soul.” The two men worked together, songwriting and publishing, between Nashville and Los Angeles and places in between, but Taos was where they kicked back to relax. He also boasts a long-standing friendship with Michael Hearne, who brings the rollicking Big Barn Dance Festival to Taos every September. When Big Barn is in town, Menane and gallery neighbor Robert Parsons host an accompanying shindig; using the small casita adjacent to Heritage as a stage, Wengert Patio becomes a hub for live music and afternoon parties that attract hundreds of followers. “Beside the point of having fun, we want to really celebrate Taos, the artists, the music,” he said. It’s just one of the many ways Menane has established a loyal clientele for his gallery and an equally loyal following for his music. He is a real pleasure to meet and talk with, full of stories that often invoke celebrity but are more about the values of family and friendship.

Take, for example, husbandand-wife team Jori Jayne Emde and Zakary Pelaccio, who recently opened Corner Office, a natural wines bar with a meticulous and inspired selection of locally seasonal small plates and an experience one guest likened to “just like being in ‘Cheers.’” “That’s exactly the vibe we hoped to bring here,” Pelaccio said, and Emde agreed, adding, “We have seen complete strangers sitting together and making friends over their wine and food.” The charming cafe has a laid-back style that reflects the couple’s easy collaboration, perhaps explaining why guests keep returning for more than the spirits and food.

s Angelo and Jacquelene McHorse were preparing to welcome their first child, the young couple was also beset with asking themselves some serious questions. A former horse trainer with experience in animal husbandry, Jacquelene enjoyed wild harvesting and tinkering with creating lip balms and lotions — but it was only a hobby. Angelo was months away from becoming a certified Wilderness Ranger, yet facing the reality that a three-month certification training requirement would mean he would not only miss the birth of his firstborn, but he would also miss the first month of the child’s life. Unwilling to make that particular sacrifice, Angelo stepped away from that career choice. With questions come answers, and shortly after the birth of their daughter, Bison Star Naturals was also born. “We opted to take the entrepreneurial route so we could work at least twice as hard,” explained Angelo with equal

hints of humor and seriousness as he discussed the level of commitment it takes to start a business from scratch. The couple has a decidedly family-first approach, but not one that is exclusive with limited hours and access. Bison Star Naturals is a by-product of a couple with deep connections to family and nature who revere quality and value. In a society that can fall prey to instant gratification and impetuous experiences, the customer focus and genuine thoughtfulness behind the brand is authentic — it is not a slick marketing campaign. While the Mante family creates your breakfast burrito from about 20 different stuffings, you might like to know that long ago, hungry rural folks, needing to fold anything edible into a tortilla, closed up the ends to keep the “little donkey” package from spilling out. Mante opened his first Chow Cart in 1973 in an old bread truck. Two convenient locations are still family-operated with a menu that includes Mante’s iconic New Mexico breakfast — choice of fillings burrito — and burgers too.

The formerly all-vegetarian Plant Base Café has been renamed Taos Café and has added meat-based items to its menu. Owner and head chef Frankie Valdez wanted to create “a more inclusive menu” that now includes bison and fish alongside vegetarian options like roasted marinated red and golden beets, a scrumptious grain-based taco salad, and Italian or Mexican lasagna or a fill-you-up vegetable stew.

“Pizan,” gleaned from an adaption of the Americanized paisan, means countryman, friend, brother, buddy. That’s the way you’ll feel about Pizaños’ pizza-makers when you’re gobbling down a Specialty Pie about the size of the moon, named the Rio Grande. Salads, pastas, too, and entrees like eggplant parmesan, and New Yorkstyle cheesecake!

Why stand in an airport line when you can experience Guadalajara here in Taos? After almost 30 years, the eatery is still family-owned and operated. Limes and cilantro prevail! Dining is casual, but the menu is elegant: ceviche (mixed sea foods), oysters on the half-shell or campechana (octopus, squid, mussels, shrimp); menudo (beef tips with hominy and red chile), or posole (with pork, not goat). Sweet tooth? Flan or Buenelo with ice cream. Thirsty? Iced Horchata (rice cinnamon drink) or Jamaica (Hibiscus), plus Mexican and other imported beers. RED CHILE STEW WITH BEEF 1 tablespoon oil 1 pound lean ground beef 1/2 cup chopped onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 12 ounces cubed potatoes 1 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained and rinsed 1 tablespoon honey 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 14-ounce tub frozen red chile, defrosted 2-3 cups water Sour cream Tortilla chips

Heat oil in heavy saucepan or dutch oven. Brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic until all red color is gone from meat. Add the potatoes and pinto beans to the pot and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the honey, salt, pepper, oregano, cumin and cinnamon. Mix well and cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the red chile and 2 cups of water and combine well. Bring to a boil, then cover and lower to a simmer. Cook for 45 minutes. Check and stir well. If too thick, add an additional cup of water. Simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes. Serve in bowls with sour cream and tortilla chips. Makes 4 hearty servings.

CALABACITAS ENCHILADAS 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup chopped onion 3 cloves chopped garlic 1/2 cup sliced celery 3/4 cup sliced carrots 3/4 cup sliced mushrooms 3 cups sliced zucchini and summer squash 2 cups corn kernels from frozen 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper

1/2 cup chopped roasted green chile 2 cans cream of mushroom soup 1/2 cup sour cream 12-15 corn tortillas 2 cups shredded Cheddar or Mexican cheese blend

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a baking dish and set aside. Heat oil in a heavy pot. Add the onion, garlic and celery, and cook, using medium-high heat, stirring, for a couple of minutes. Add the carrots and mushrooms. Reduce heat to medium and cook until mushrooms begin to wilt, about a minute. Add the zucchini, the corn and the seasonings. Cook over medium-low heat for about five minutes, stirring occasionally. In a bowl, combine the soup, the sour cream and the green chile to make a chile cream sauce. To assemble the enchilada, spread a little of the chile cream mixture on the bottom of the baking dish. Lay corn tortillas, edges overlapping, to cover bottom of dish. Spread about a third of the chile cream mixture over the tortillas. Spread half the vegetables over the cream. Sprinkle with about 1/3 of the shredded cheese. Cover with tortillas. This time, spread the remaining vegetables over the tortillas, then spread half the chile cream over the vegetables. Sprinkle with half the remaining cheese. Cover with another layer of tortillas. Spread remaining chile cream sauce over the tortillas. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in oven for 1 hour, until filling is bubbly and top is browned. Remove from oven and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Makes 6-8 generous servings.

Historic TaosInn A legendary gathering place of North Central New Mexico by Josephine Ashton

he history of Taos — and that of inns —have deep roots. The English word inn derives from “inne” — Old English, perhaps by c. 1200. While travel meant walking, riding a horse or stepping out of a wagon or carriage, the sign “Inn” or “Public House” promised drink to quench the thirst and a meal of meat and bread or hearty soup. If enough beds were not available, shelter was provided in a shed or barn. In Spanish, the word for “inn” is “posada,” a term also used for the Christmas procession, Posada. Pilgrims seeking the Christ-child stop at various homes providing food and beverage for the weary faithful — then on to an establishment, a church usually, for the finale. The custom of a location that provided food, drink and lodging to travelers and served as gathering places for clans, groups, relatives and friends has represented the better part of being human. The locale may have been a lean-to by a river, an igloo, a stone circle, a log cabin, a tent, a wild-west establishment, a 2023 reach-for-the-sky tower, hotel banquet hall or a private home. In Taos, one of several adobe houses dating from the 19th century was to become both office and home for forty years of the beloved Doctor “Doc” Thomas P. Martin, who made the arduous trek to Taos in 1890 via horse and buggy. But Doc’s place was more than just a medical office. Local histories tell us that, in 1915, he hosted the formative group of painters that became the Taos Society of Artists.

While some sources say that Doc and Helen arrived in Taos together, other sources say he married Helen Campbell, a violinist and batik artist, in 1917. She is said to have loved to garden but was also a designer. Women from New York, Paris and London loved the colors and culture of New Mexico in her scarves, shawls, wall hangings, tea dresses and chiffon wraps. Following Doc Martin’s passing in 1935, his widow Helen became an industrious businesswoman and, with the help of creative friends, transformed their property into the Hotel Martin. The grand opening in 1936 was accompanied by much fanfare, with dancers from the Pueblo and celebrities such as the wild west showman, Pawnee Bill (Gordon William Lillie), once a partner with William “Buffalo” Bill Cody. Following Helen’s passing, later owners of Hotel Martin would rename the cluster of adobes The Taos Inn. Designated a National Historic Monument in 1982, The Historic Taos Inn at 125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte is walking distance from Kit Carson Park, Taos Plaza, Kit Carson Street’s “Gallery Row” as well as the Bent Street and John Dunn shops. I met with cordial Joe Kendall — a Taos resident for 18 years and general manager of the Inn since 2019 — in the graceful, inviting two-story lobby with its viga ceiling, the wooden beams a defining characteristic of Pueblo and Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico. A fountain now stands where a well once anchored a landscape, and paintings by local artists grace the walls. Refurbished tables and comfortable chairs invite locals and visitors to relax in an intimate atmosphere, enjoying the mixology of the Adobe Bar and the nightly entertainment that “brings together local culture and historic traditions.” Kendall said that residents and visitors alike enjoy the cove called The Library for morning coffee or afternoon drink. Both Kendall and his operations manager, Julie Sena, with 17 years at the Inn, frequently used the word family in describing both their team of local employees, entertainers, and the generations of Taos residents who continue to frequent the establishment. “Our guests are not ‘like’ family,’ Sena said, “they are family!”

IT IS THE FREEDOM of choice to embrace solitude one day and a social experience the next that solos love. Solo travelers are in-fact alone, but few are lonely. Nearly 100 percent of solo travelers, upon returning from a trip, say they will travel solo again and many come to prefer it.

hink there’s a stigma to traveling solo? Think again! The hottest form of global travel is not couples paired on a trip, nor is it a family or groups of friends or adventurers with shared interests. It seems everyone is going solo these days — accounting for nearly one-quarter of all travelers.

In fact, one thing that Baby Boomers, Millennials and Generation Z have in common: they are choosing to go solo. The number one response solos give when asked why they enjoy traveling alone is the freedom to do, see and experience what they want when they want. Stay up late? Get up early? See every museum and gift shop or all your time in the mountains? Solo travelers don’t have to negotiate — they choose where and how they spend their vacation. It’s as if Taos was designed for the solo traveler. The diverse and liberal-leaning, freedom-affirming high desert mountain town with its eccentricities and acceptance of everyone and everything has welcomed solos long before solo travel was a thing. The town is also dog-friendly, known for its festivals, food and scenery (including those stop-the-car sunsets), and its proximity to things that often appeal to the solo adventurer: camping in solitude, hiking, biking, skiing and fishing. Creatives are often solos by nature, which is why Taos appeals to writers, painters, musicians and artists of all varieties.

I have been a solo traveler for decades and my first meaningful visit to Taos was as a solo traveler. I fit the demographic and, like most solos, I practically crave solo travel for the liberation of making my own decisions, seeing what I want, and skipping that which doesn’t serve me. Turns out, the Taos vibe served me well, and I soon made it my forever home. I now enjoy the area with friends, some of whom I met on that initial solo trip, yet I continue to enjoy all that Taos has to offer as a solo enthusiast because Taos, as much as anywhere I’ve lived and traveled, offers a wealth of opportunities for those who choose to go solo. For the uninitiated, walking into an establishment alone may make one feel uncomfortable or awkward. But Taos has long been a destination for the creatives, the unencumbered, and the ones whose comfort zones are readily expandable and therefore makes it the ideal location for anyone venturing solo for the first time. Perhaps it is due to the older and somewhat independent-minded demographic of those who live here, or because there remains an undertone of the wild open Southwest, but solos blend in here as easily as the sage on the mesa. Whether dining alone or having a margarita at the Adobe Bar in the Taos Inn, the solo traveler isn’t likely to be solo for long — unless they want to be.

The realities and responsibilities of life often require us to meet the demands and expectations of colleagues, bosses and families — solos understand that doing more of the same on vacation isn’t always a vacation. My favorite trips have been as a solo traveler where I can linger and not feel rushed to keep up with someone else’s agenda or schedule — or not have to wait for someone to keep up with me on a hiking trail or a ski slope. Ojo Caliente is a short and scenic drive outside of Taos and has long been a favorite solo destination. With much of the property canopied in a whisper zone — why not go alone? I find that people are often intrigued with me on solo trips and I have dozens of experiences where strangers have talked with me — many who are friends today. One gentleman having lunch with his daughters noticed me enjoying my lunch at a lovely riverside table and, as they were leaving, he approached me and said he hoped his daughters would grow up to be as independent and content as I seemed. Rather than a rare sentiment, I had heard similar things before. Solo travelers inspire others just as much as we are inspired, and the connections made through solo travel are often impossible to make when traveling with others. As the travel industry catches on to the solo travel trend, travelers who choose to go it alone are increasingly benefitting from solo sales and specials. In my experience, I make more connections and have a richer experience when I travel solo. I’ve traveled to Taos (twice) as a solo traveler and, if you have not seen Taos through the eyes of a solo traveler, add it to your bucket list. WINTER+SPRING 2024 D I S C O V E R TA O S . C O M

Eagle Nest

in neighboring Colfax County is the laid-back mountain town of Eagle Nest. The small village — with a long history of gunslingers and gold mines — is now a popular destination for outdoor fun and adventure. The area is home to elk, deer and golden eagle — for which the lake is named.

Red River A STROLL DOWN MAIN STREET in Red River reveals shops, restaurants and motels from a seemingly bygone era. Questa LESS THAN AN HOUR NORTH OF TAOS , the Village of Questa is the northern gateway to the Enchanted Circle. The town was host to a molybdenum mine for a century, and is now known as a solar and sustainable energy leader. Artists and outdoorsmen have been drawn to Questa forever, given its proximity to pristine alpine forests and the mighty Rio Grande. Adventurers can visit the Rinconada Loop Trail, Columbine Canyon, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and Cabresto Canyon. When the snow arrives in Questa, the trails convert from mountain biking to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. In the heart of Questa is the San Antonio de Padua Church, which was built soon after the village was established in 1842. The historic adobe structure was renovated in 2016 by volunteer artists and craftspeople. Along with a number of restaurants and shops, Questa offers visitors a short walking tour of the town, featuring plaques with fun facts and local history.
