Government will ban bodies pursuing BDS

Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, vowed to ban public bodies from pursuing boycott, divestment and sanctions activities (BDS) as 1,000 guests celebrated a gala ‘Israel 75’ event at The Outernet in central London on Tuesday night.

Badenoch also claimed Brexit will make the UK-Israel trading stronger in a positive keynote address.

Government Ministers and Members of Parliament joined Ambassadors of the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco to the UK marking Israel’s landmark birthday.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely hosted the event attended by former Prime Minister

Badenoch told guests how the UK had stood beside Israel since its founding.

“Our relationship is built on decades of cooperation and steeped in historical ties,” she said. “The foundation of modern Israel was the realisation of a dream and the beginning of a new future of the Jewish people and today Israel is shaping the world’s future.”

Badenoch visited Israel in March to help drive forward an ambitious new UK-Israel degree trade agreement.

“It was my first visit to Israel and Jerusalem and one of the most

Discussing an ambitious new UK-Israel trade agreement, Banenoch noted, “The UK and Israel are two entrepreneurial countries with an unwavering belief in democracy, freedom and capitalism. Now that the UK has left the EU we can have an even stronger and more supportive relationship. That is why I am working hard to negotiate a modern, innovative deal that will open up huge opportunities for us in financial services, tech and infrastructure. I am confident that we will make it happen because the ties that bind the UK and Israel are stronger than many would have you believe.”

In announcing her government’s intentions, Badenoch continued, “This government will ban public bodies from pursuing boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) activities. We will ban those activities including at universities and local authorities. It is the politics of the student union and it demeans the bilateral relationship between the UK and Israel.”

She concluded: “Israel’s story is one of strength, resilience and success against all the odds. The Israel that I saw on my visit is a melting pot of diversity and community, and a thriving start up nation that enriches and improves lives across the world.

“Our counties have achieved a lot together over the past three quarters of a century. This is just the start.”

Addressing guests, Hotovely recalled being a first generation Israeli after her grandparents came to Israel from Soviet Georgia in 1969.

“Israel was a dream with a deep belief of

the Jewish people coming home to their homeland,” she said.

Hotovely recalled historically how The Balfour Declaration paved the way to the creation of a national home for the Jewish people. “It turned this dream into reality,” she said. “The new modern Israel is a strong country with a vibrant democracy, it’s at the frontier of technology, health and research.”

Speaking of Israel’s friendship with the UK, Hotovely noted: “It runs deep,” she said. “It is bound together by our shared history and our continued collaboration.

“Israel and the UK’s relationship are so strong. Our cooperation on security and

intelligence are stronger than ever. Together we save lives, together we cooperate on health and trade. Today, the work on a new, exciting Free Trade Agreement is unlocking huge potential between our two economies.” Hotovely thanked guest of honour Badenoch for strengthening ties between the countries.

“Kemi is someone who gets things done and has been a huge driving force in pushing forward this trade agreement,” she said.

The event included Israeli food and wine as guests were treated to performances by award-winning actress and singer, Miri Messika, Israeli Dance Company, FRESCO and cross-genre Israeli violinist, Bar Markovitz.

The event is part of a wider ‘Israel 75’ festival of events around London over the coming week.

US rejoins UNESCO

World Jewish Congress has welcomed the return of the United States to UNESCO after a five-year absence.

Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, gathered representatives of the organisation’s 193 Member States to inform them the US had officially notified her of its decision to rejoin from July on the basis of a concrete financing plan.

“This is a strong act of confidence, in UNESCO and in multilateralism. Not only in the centrality of the Organisation’s mandate – culture, education, science, information – but also in the way this mandate is being implemented,” she said.

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder said: “UNESCO has made an immeasurable impact on the world stage by safeguarding history amid tumultuous and complex global events, so that current and future generations can be exposed to and better understand the lessons of the past.

“WJC, a longtime UNESCO partner on Holocaust remembrance and interfaith initiatives, is hopeful that the agency will now be able to share its critical work with even broader audiences.”

In a letter to the Director-General, the US Department of State welcomed the way UNESCO had addressed emerging challenges, modernised its management, and reduced political tensions in recent years.

Elected head of UNESCO in 2017, Azoulay led mediations to reduce political tensions and find consensus on sensitive topics including the Middle East.

New initiatives have been launched enabling UNESCO to tackle contemporary challenges such as the ethics of artificial intelligence and protection of the ocean. New field campaigns have enabled the organisation to reconnect with its historical ambitions.

Administrative reforms have made UNESCO more efficient and financially secure since 2018.

The return of the US was made possible by agreement reached by Congress in December 2022 authorising financial contributions to UNESCO.

The US had suspended contributions in 2011 due to domestic legislation, before notifying UNESCO of its decision to legally withdraw in October 2017.

The proposed financing plan must now be submitted to the General Conference of UNESCO Member States for approval. Some Member States have requested an extraordinary session for a decision.

Bill passed for Abraham Accords

The US House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to appoint a special envoy for the Abraham Accords on Tuesday.

Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres and Republican Rep. Michael Lawler introduced the bill which passed 413-13. Seven representatives did not vote. The Senate must ratify the bill to become law.

According to legislation, the Special Envoy shall seek to ‘expand and strengthen’ the Abraham Accords, in coordination with regional ambassadors, non-governmental organisations and stakeholders determined appropriate by the envoy.

The envoy will serve as primary advisor to the US Government, engage in discussions with nation-state officials lacking official diplomatic relations with Israel and consult with non-governmental organisations that have attempted to strengthen the Accords.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month addressed the 2023 American-Israel public affairs committee policy summit in Washington to establish

Trump administration.

Foreign ministers of Israel, the US, Morocco, Egypt, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates are due to meet at the end of June in Morocco for the second summit of the Negev Forum.

Speaking on the House floor on during the debate, Rep. Torres described the 2020 Abraham Accords between Israel and Arab countries as a “monumental” achievement.

“The Abraham Accords is both an affirmation of Arab-Israeli peace and a rejection of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement,” he reportedly said. “Instead of the three ‘noes’ of the Khartoum Resolution, we are living in the age of the three ‘yeses’. Yes to recognition of Israel, yes to negotiations with Israel and yes to peace with Israel.

“Today, with the full passage of H.R. 3099, we are bending the long arc of the Middle East in its proper direction, toward peace and prosperity for Jewish people, Christians, and Muslims, the children of Abraham standing together as one.”

Rep. Lawler spoke about the envoy’s role in influencing Saudi Arabia to join

IDF report on Egyptian border attack

The IDF have accepted “operational; and command faults” following an investigation into the deaths of three soldiers at the Israel-Egypt border earlier this month.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had demanded an “exhaustive” investigation following the murders of Sergeant Lia Ben Nun, 19, of Rishon L’Tzion and Staff Sgt. Ori Yitzhak Iluz, 20, of Tzefat.

Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, of Ofakim was shot by the terrorist during the manhunt.

The IDF report noted operational errors and a failure to follow protocol.

Factors in the terror attack at the Harif military base included an emergency gate unknown to troops in the area, an over emphasis of drug smuggling incidents and lengthy guard shifts.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi accepted there were “operational and command faults and gaps”.

IDF’s Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Eliezer Toledano, probed the troops’

He said: “The special security passage was viewed by us as a hidden passage, not updating the soldiers on this passage was

There were no faults attached to the

actions of troops who were killed.

It was determined essential that IDF soldiers be in the region due to smuggling and Israeli travellers. Soldiers in pairs and 12-hour shifts have been questioned.

The IDF will “refine” priorities for terror incidents and threat of smuggling in the area.

Bicom reported two commanders cited for responsibility.

Col. Ido Sa’ad, commander of the Paran Brigade, acted correctly regarding Salah, but was “overall” responsible how operations were carried out in the area. Sa’ad has moved to another IDF post.

Lt. Col. Ivan Kon, commander of the Bardelas Battalion, was reprimanded for the operating concept in his forces.

Egyptian border policeman Mohamed Salah was named as the terrorist behind the triple murders.

The Egyptian border is patrolled by light infantry battalions of the IDF’s Border Defence Corps in the Southern Command. Thousands of mourners attended the funerals of Ben-Nun in Rishon Lezion, Dahan in Ofakim and Ilouz in Tzefat. Ben-Nun was hailed a “role model for the unit”, Dahan showed “valour and dedication” in every mission. Ilouz was described as an “admired” commander by his commanding officer.

Politicians blast Pink Floyd’s Waters

Israel aid to Ukraine after dam blast

Israel has sent mineral water and food to Ukraine following extensive damage to the Nova Kakhovka Dam.

The Israeli Embassy in Kyiv organised aid through volunteer organisations to victims on Monday.

Thousands of residents were evacuated from the Kherson Oblast following the blast last week.

“The State of Israel stands by the side of the Ukrainian people, especially at this difficult time, and comes to the rescue to provide immediate humanitarian aid for the benefit of the citizens affected by the collapse of the dam,” said Foreign Minister Eli Cohen.

The Embassy of Israel in Ukraine, Israel Defense Forces and international aid agency of the State of Israel at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organised the humanitarian mission.

Israel condemned damage to the dam though officials did not link the incident to Russia.

“Israel is shocked by the extensive damage caused to the Kakhovka Dam,” tweeted Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Haiat.

“Thousands of innocent civilians are in danger because of this terrible destruction. Such deliberate damage to critical infrastructure and people must be strongly condemned by the entire international community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ukrainian people at this difficult time.”

and MK Zeev Elkin, both Ukrainian, similarly left Russia out of an official statement.

“Our hearts go out to the Ukrainian people who have suffered many losses and are under a brutal and inhumane attack on civilian infrastructure," they said. “Beyond the immediate devastating outcome, the explosion at the dam in the power station in Kherson could have long-term implications. The State of Israel will assist in reconstruction of the area, it is the right and moral thing to do.”

Ukraine blame Russia, which controls the dam in Kherson district, for the bombing strike. Russia claimed Ukraine were responsible for the explosion to prevent water supply to the south.

Kherson region Chief Rabbi Yosef Wolff noted: “We are working tirelessly with the assistance of the federation to reach every Jew residing on the riverbank and evacuate them to the higher part of the city to ensure their safety. We are also locating Jewish residents in small villages in the area to evacuate them as well.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky said last weekend that his military was engaged in “counter-offensive and defensive operations” a day after President Vladimir Putin said Kyiv's drive to retake territory was taking place. Zelensky added that his generals were “optimistic” of success.

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine said in a statement: “We are prepared to aid in the evacuation of the population.

Leading politicians have spoken out against former Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters over antisemitic rants during concerts during his farewell tour in Europe.

The responses follow a strong stance led by the Board of Deputies, Campaign Against Antisemitism and community leaders outraged at the rock star’s behaviour at gigs.

Waters, 79, is in the midst of his farewell This Is Not A Drill European and South American 2023 tour.

In October and November, Waters is scheduled to perform across Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru before finishing in Costa Rica, Columbia and Ecuador in December.

The Board wrote to senior and local politicians, and venues in cities where Waters concerts were due to take place in the UK, pointing out past hate statements made by Waters and Jewish community concerns at planned concerts.

Labour Leader Keir Starmer condemned Waters for “clearly” espousing antisemitic views to audiences as “highly disturbing” and noted The Labour Party stood by the Jewish community

He said: “There is no place for antisemitism anywhere, at any time and those who hide behind the excuse that artists in the entertainment industry should not be held to the same standards as others are utterly wrong. There should be no artistic license for discrimination and racism.”

Starmer added that whilst people recalled Waters as a member of one of the

most important bands in history, he was now “more synonymous with spreading deeply troubling antisemitism”.

Cabinet Minister Michael Gove wrote to the Board stating the Conservative Government was clear everyone had a “fundamental right to freedom of speech and artistic expression” so long as they remained within “boundaries set by law”.

He added that Waters was reportedly “falling short” of a “societal expectation” on people with a significant public profile to behave responsibly and not abuse their platform.

Marie van der Zyl, BoD President, thanked Starmer and Gove for responses. She also welcomed regional and local politicians speaking out and stood with the wider Jewish community.

The Board in a recent statement said that Waters’ performances were “not just concerts, but political rallies in which he gives his worldview”.

Over 4,000 people have signed a CAA petition to ban Waters from performing at music venues in Birmingham, London and Manchester following his controversial concert in Berlin last month when he wore what appeared to be a Nazi SS-style uniform.

An initial target of 500 signatories was reached in days and revised to 5,000.

CAA’s petition notes Waters has a ‘long history of baiting Jews’.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, community rabbis and leaders expressed concern about former Waters appearing at the O2 Arena, London last week.

Salford councillor Arnie Saunders joined

Bury South Labour MP Christian Wakeford and CAA in calls for the Manchester gig to be axed.

Saunders, in an open letter to arena bosses where Waters closed the UK leg, wrote: “The AO Arena should be in the forefront of promoting inclusivity and tolerance, given that the arena was itself a victim of a terrorist attack that shocked the nation a mere six years ago. It should be a sanctuary and shrine to multi-cultural co-existence and tolerance.”

Worsley and Eccles South MP Barbara Keeley backed Saunders, noting: “I share your concerns. His actions and comments are completely unacceptable and are antisemitic. I understand the upset which this is causing in the Jewish communities in Salford, Manchester and across the country.”

Keeley wrote to Jen Mitchell, general manager of the AO Arena, about the issues raised.

CAA contacted a cinema chain for screenings of Waters’ film to be cancelled.

Gideon Falter, CAA CEO, told LBC radio, that Waters had made a point over the years of flying a pig-shaped inflatable bloom with the Star of David on it over his concerts.

Falter also said Waters “went out of his way” to bait the Jewish community. “It's really troubling to see somebody like that, who uses his platform for these purposes to get red-carpet treatment,” he noted.

CAA added that Waters had a penchant for breaching the International Definition of Antisemitism and attracted the attention of former KKK Grand Wizard David

Duke.

In February this year, Polly Sampson, Pink Floyd lyricist and wife of the band’s guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour, accused Waters on Twitter of being “antisemitic to your rotten core”.

Gilmour shared the tweet, noting that “every word is demonstrably true”.

German Police, meantime, have opened an investigation against Waters on suspicion of “incitement to public hatred” after the Mercedes-Benz Arena gig in Berlin last month.

Footage shows Waters wearing a long black and red armband with hammers instead of swastikas. During the show he aims an imitation machine gun at the audience.

Holocaust victim Anne Frank and Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh accidentally shot dead during an IDF operation in the West Bank last year were projected side by side on a large screen.

Jewish protesters showed contempt to Waters, who denies accusations of antisemitism, at his Frankfurt concert by singing Am Yisroel Chai.

Israel's foreign ministry accused Waters of “desecrating” the memory of Anne and six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on German authorities to prosecute Waters for ‘Holocaust distortion’.

Waters claimed parts of the Berlin performance were against fascism, injustice and bigotry.

Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s Top 10 antisemitic events of 2013 and 2018 feature Waters.

NJA denounces UN report

The National Jewish Assembly has condemned the recently released report by the United Nations Human Rights Council riddled with anti-Israel bias and a disregard for objective analysis.

NJA described the report's one-sided focus on Israel and failure to hold accountable those responsible for human rights abuses among the Palestinians as “deeply troubling”.

“We are deeply concerned by the report's glaring omissions and distortions,”

NJA Chairman Gary Mond commented. “It ignores the role of Palestinian leadership in perpetuating the conflict and fails to acknowledge their responsibility for human rights violations against both Israelis and Palestinians. By absolving Palestinian terrorism of any culpability and challenging Israel's efforts to combat terrorism, the report effectively defends and excuses these acts of violence.”

Mond added: “A report of this nature removes any semblance of impartiality from the UN as an institution and destroys its credibility. The general obsession with Israel, while ignoring so many oppressive regimes around the world, must be stopped. “The report selectively targets the

incumbent Israeli government, launching a politically motivated rebuke without any semblance of criticism towards the failed and corrupt Palestinian leadership. This biased approach undermines the report's credibility and reveals its inherent agenda.”

NJA also takes issue with the report's unfounded and unsubstantiated claims of ‘war crimes’ attributed to Israel.

“Such assertions lack a proper evidentiary basis and are a disservice to the pursuit of truth and justice,” noted an NJA spokesman. NJA has called for fairness, objectivity and impartiality in investigations and reports related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“It is essential the UN Human Rights Council uphold its mandate to address human rights violations wherever they occur, without prejudice or bias,” noted a spokesman.

“We remain committed to promoting dialogue, combating antisemitism and advocating for the rights and security of the Jewish community. We call upon the international community to reject biased reports that perpetuate an unbalanced narrative and work towards fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.”

Shin Bet to fight crime in Arab quarter

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the Israel Security Authority to tackle crime families in the Arab sector.

Five people were murdered in disturbing scenes near Nazareth last Thursday.

The ISA, Israel Police and Justice Ministry attended an emergency meeting to evaluate roles in the growing crisis. Netanyahu directed National Security Council Director Tzachi Hanegbi to present operative recommendations next week. There have been 102 deaths recorded to date this year.

A ministerial committee on Arab sector affairs, chaired by Netanyahu, will be established.

Whilst the government is determined to restore quiet in the Arab sector, many senior Israeli security officials are against Shin Bet being relied upon to end the violence in Arab communities.

Members of the ‘Commanders for Israel's Security’ movement issued a letter on Monday stating that so many lives lost should not be considered “inevitable” and lamented alarming statistics.

Signatories reportedly pointed out that police operations relied on “trust between citizens and officers” and called for “stringent laws with severe penalties” for illegal weapon possession and usage.

Legal procedures needed to be streamlined while targeting financial resources of criminal organisations. Signatories also called for investment in education, culture and infrastructure in Arab communities through coordinated by socio-economic ministries.

They concluded: “Employing invasive measures against citizens without a legitimate need to combat terrorism or political subversion blurs the line between an intelligence agency in a democratic nation and a secret police. Furthermore, deploying the Shin Bet in Arab society is tantamount to branding it as an adversary of the state, despite being a casualty of government ineptitude.”

Netanyahu described the escalation as a “national crisis”.

He told his weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday: “The murders in the Arab sector have become a blight on the country. We

are determined to fight this deplorable phenomenon, especially the head of the snake, the criminal organisations.”

The latest coalition has allocated budgets to hire thousands of police officers and establish the National Guard. But Netanyahu acknowledged, it will take time to train forces.

Netanyahu insisted on bringing in the ISA and responded to concerns Shin Bet would not be focused on counterterror missions against Israeli citizens.

He said: “The problems entailed by taking this step must be overcome. Only this way will we be able to reverse the trend quickly and provide a response to Israel's Arab citizens who are hoping for the restoration of law and order in their lives.”

The latest victims were Naeem Marjiyeh, 29, Rami Marjiyeh, 15, Luai Ragheb, 25, Ibraheem Shehadeh, 27, and Mohammed C’nanah, 25. All are reportedly linked to a feud between the Bakri and Hariri crime families.

Salim Omar Dahab, 30, was killed in a shooting incident outside Kafr Qasem. National Security Minister Itamar BenGvir described violence in the Arab community akin to the ‘wild west’ and called for a national guard alonside more Shin Bet involvement.

Netanyahu issued a video statement that he was “horrified” by the killings and determined to stop the cycle of murders.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid called on Netanyahu to head a committee “to fight violence in Arab society” but not Ben Gvir, describing him as the “biggest failure” of a minister the police had known.

Raam leader Mansour Abbas, said murder was “routine” and the Arab community was in a “catastrophe”.

Bicom overviewed the surge of killings. In 2022, 112 Arab citizens of Israel were killed, there were 126 fatalities in 2021.

Earlier last week, Hadash-Ta’al MKs met with Netanyahu to discuss smuggling of Israeli military weapons into Arab communities. The Prime Minister’s office pledged to form a steering committee.

Netanyahu said: “We need to put politics to the side, get rid of divisions and work together to eradicate the criminal scourge to achieve rapid results.”

IRGC as “terror group” says

The National Jewish Assembly has called on the United Kingdom government to take decisive action and proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

Action would deal a strong blow against the IRGC's ability to operate, fundraise, recruit and propagandise within the UK.

“The IRGC, designated as a terrorist organisation by several countries and international entities, including the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council, is a major threat to regional stability and global security,” said NJA Chairman Gary Mond. “Its involvement in supporting and financing terrorist activities across the Middle East, including in Gaza, West Bank, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen is well-documented.

“The IRGC has been linked to terrorist attacks in the West. One of the most prominent incidents was the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, which killed 85. The attack was carried out by Hezbollah, a proxy group supported by the IRGC. In 2018, an IRGC-linked Iranian diplomat based in Austria was arrested for planning to bomb a rally of Iranian dissidents in France.”

Mond added: “Iran has been calling for Israel's destruction since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Banning the IRGC would

with

Adult Social Care Arrangements – Team Leader

be at least a step in showing the UK's disgust with this genocidal attitude.

“By proscribing the IRGC, the UK government would send an unequivocal message it will not tolerate the activities of a terrorist entity that undermines peace and stability. It would enable law enforcement agencies to take proactive measures to disrupt the IRGC's networks and prevent it from further exploiting the UK's open society for its nefarious purposes.

“Proscribing the IRGC would also demonstrate the UK's unwavering commitment to combatting terrorism and protecting its citizens. It would align with the international consensus on the threat posed by the IRGC and contribute to collective efforts in countering its destabilizing activities.”

Mond continued: “The government must prioritise the safety and security of citizens and take immediate action to proscribe the IRGC. It is imperative the UK joins ranks of other nations in recognising the true nature of this dangerous organisation and take concrete steps to dismantle its operations within its borders.”

Herzog awards Defence prize

President Isaac Herzog awarded the prestigious 2023 Israel Defence Prize to four outstanding projects at a ceremony in Jerusalem last week.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi and Director General of the Israel MoD Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir participated in the ceremony. Head of the Israel Security Agency Ronen Bar and Mossad Head David Barnea attended the high-profile event at Herzog’s residence. Projects have made significant contributions to Israel’s security. They have all ensured Israel’s operational superiority on the battlefield.

A groundbreaking cyber Defence system has been developed by Israel Defence Forces countering existing and emerging cyber threats. A joint ISAIDF cutting-edge system addresses security challenges. A Mossad-IDF collaboration delivers a strategic contribution to Israel’s security through technological innovation. A joint venture of the IDF’s Intelligence Corps with Rafael Advanced Systems has led to a breakthrough operational capability to reinforce Israel’s qualitative advantage.

Herzog told the gathering that their contributions to Israel’s national strength

was remarkable. “Through your accomplishments, inventions, developments and outstanding achievements the security of our nation is safeguarded, ensuring our ability to defend ourselves independently,” he said. “The projects are truly awe-inspiring, revolutionary and serve as a wellspring of inspiration. They transform seemingly impossible fantasies into tangible realities. The initiatives in which you participate often resemble works of science fiction, yet they exist within the realm of actuality.

Herzog to meet with Biden

This is not the stuff of dreams; it is the embodiment of our real-life accomplishments.”

Gallant said that the exceptional projects showcased the strength of the Defence establishment's human resources.

“We have already achieved the remarkable feat of saving lives and thwarting acts of terror,” he noted.

“Israel consistently proves its ability to overcome evolving security challenges. These capabilities send a clear message to our adversaries that we are always prepared for any threat.”

Zamir added: “The Defence Prize holds immense significance. The awards allow Israel’s Defence bodies groundbreaking operational superiority in combat in the fields of intelligence, air sea, and cyber.”

To maintain its position the MoD’s research and development budget is the highest recorded.

“This approach ensures not only the preservation of Israeli leadership in the region but its fortification as well,” commented Zamir.

Members of the award committee include Maj. Gen. (Res.) Udi Adam, Asher Wagner, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Roni Numa and Prof. Ofer Firstenberg from the Weizmann Institute.

Kisharon showcases art at JW3

Kisharon hosts The heART Edit at JW3 on Thursday, June 22 (7.15pm).

Twenty-eight participants the charity support have worked with established and emerging artists to create over 50 pieces of art and sculpture for the exhibition and fundraising auction.

Up to 30 artists volunteered to work individually or as a group to create each piece of art. Among artists is painter and sculptor David Breuer-Weil, artist Bettina Caro and photo-journalist Judah Passow.

Kisharon’s Fundraising Manager Emma Nagliis is looking ahead to the event.

She said: “We are showcasing spectacular works created by people Kisharon support with learning disabilities and autism. The event shows everyone has the ability to create art.”

Sari Freidman and Freidi Klein co-chair the HeART event committee.

Freidi attended a similar event in Israel that she was inspired by and Kisharon held the first HeART edit in 2018. It was a huge success but a second planned in 2020 was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Next week’s will be on a larger scale with more artists and people Kisharon support including pupils from Kisharon Noé School.

Emma observed: “People we support thrive through the medium of art. The event brings together artists and further cements

Kisharon’s message of being inclusive.” She added: “This project has enabled all services that Kisharon run to be engaged. People we support from Kisharon Noé School, Supported Living and Day Opportunities have had the opportunity. It has been wonderful to link people of all ages across services with our artist volunteers. The impact of seeing art displayed in a gallery and then sold to raise money will be hugely empowering for everyone involved.”

The project took six months to collate resulting in a range of works.

“I couldn’t single out one piece,” commented Emma. “They are all unique and will make a wonderful addition to people’s homes or offices who bid.

“To support the charity and see an impressive exhibition isn’t a usual charity event. There will be the opportunity to meet the artists and people Kisharon supports who will proudly show off their work.”

The exhibition includes mixed media art and sculpture. All funds raised go towards Kisharon to support people with learning disabilities and autism and their families throughout life’s journey.

Emma said: “It is so important to create opportunities together to thrive, grow, learn and fulfil everyone’s unique potential.” She

added: “Art is inclusive which is so important to Kisharon. The artists and people we support were able to create something completely new from a blank canvas.”

President Isaac Herzog is set to address both Houses of Congress to mark the 75th anniversary of Israel's independence in Washington next month.

During an official visit, Herzog is expected to meet President Joe Biden at the White House.

The leaders met at the White House before Israeli elections last October.

Herzog has not received an official invitation yet from the Biden administration, but advanced discussions about a state visit in July have taken place.

“The president of the country received an invitation to address both houses of Congress during his visit to Washington last November,” Herzog's office said in a statement. “The parties are currently working on the president's visit in order to deliver his speech. A meeting between the presidents has not yet been arranged.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not received an invitation to the White House since taking the helm. US officials have stated an invitation is forthcoming. But there are US concerns Netanyahu will critcise the Biden administration's intention to reach a nuclear deal with Iran.

Reported indirect talks have taken place between the US and Iranian officials in Oman. US officials have not denied speculation, but an interim deal is described as inaccurate.

The project has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the artists involved.

Maxine Leslau worked with Srulik, she said: “I was so thrilled to be asked to participate. Kisharon is a great example of unity and acceptance. They prove that together we can make the world a kinder better place. More importantly, we are all artists! This to me sums up how unique the art process was as we created pieces for the exhibition and showed the importance of inclusivity.”

Nicole Price worked with Adam, she noted: “Adam responded so well to the tactile feel of paint on his hands. He enjoyed listening to music and mixing the colours on the canvas to the beat of the music. Adam has such an infectious laugh, it was a joyful experience to work with him.”

Esti Braham collaborated with Debbie, she said, “It has been an incredibly enriching experience. The process was filled with good energy and lots of fun and we were both delighted with the outcome.”

At Kisharon Noé School, Danny worked with artist Sharon Schurder. She said: “The creative mind is free to explore. It is a talent that we can all tap into.” To book tickets and have a chance to win a beautiful piece of art visit www.kisharon. org.uk/heartedit

Fantastic Deals in Israeli Real Estate

Strong Sterling, low prices spell out o-p-p-o-r-t-u-n-i-t-y

Whether you are considering Aliyah and want to buy your dream home, are thinking about a second home for visits or want to purchase property in Israel as a secure investment, the time to act is now.

It’s no secret that real estate prices in Israel have been consistently on the rise for the past few years. According to Gidon Katz, CEO of IMP and an expert in real estate marketing, demand for real estate in Israel never slows, hence the high prices that are fueled by that demand. That said, there has been a signficiant slowdown in the local market due to rising interest rates. “That slump, together with the strong pound, have created a special opportunity for foreign investors,” says Katz. "Additionally, developers are currently offering special deals and more flexible terms, making this the perfect time to seize the opportunity to invest in real estate in Israel."

Take advantage of these rare opportunities at the Israeli Real Estate Show, to be held at Kinloss Gardens in Finchley Synagogue on June 25 from 10:30 to 17:30.

Get the inside stories about Anglo communities across Israel and meet the developers and estate agents so that you can get first dibs on the latest projects. Light

Hasmonean Students get others to look at life ‘Through our Eyes’

it helps people to be heard and strengthens us as a community.”

The highlight of the event was the sensory overloaded shopping experience workshop, where students were exposed to simulated overwhelming sensory environments. By recreating the challenges faced by individuals with sensory issues, this workshop provided a hands-on understanding of their experiences, fostering empathy and awareness.

Kisharon raise £64K at golf day

The latest innovation from the GIFT Charity incubator course in Hasmonean Girls School, which is part of the Sixth Form Midrasha course, was one that will stay with students for a long time.

Students Shoshi Maurice and Naomi Benosiglio from Hasmonean Girls School have embarked on a remarkable project called “Through Our Eyes” to raise awareness about autism and promote understanding and empathy among their peers. Both students, who themselves are autistic, wanted to provide other students with a unique opportunity to gain insights into the experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum or those struggling with sensory issues or social anxiety.

Naomi and Shoshana successfully organized the inaugural “Through Our Eyes” project last month for students in years 7 and 8. The project featured a range of workshops and panel discussions aimed at giving students the tools needed to empathise and understand why some students may react differently to them in certain situations.

Shoshi emphasised this by explaining “I am so grateful I was able to do this because

“I chose to organise this event to help students understand and support their peers on the spectrum as well as trying to create a more inclusive environment in school for autistic students like me,” said Naomi.

In addition, a captivating panel session was held, featuring esteemed speakers from Noa Girls, Barnet Education and Learning Services, and a paediatric occupational therapist who works in a school for autistic children. These experts and professionals shared their invaluable knowledge and personal stories, allowing the students to gain a comprehensive understanding of autism. The panel session created an environment where students could ask questions, challenge misconceptions, and develop a deeper empathy for those on the autism spectrum.

Shira Joseph from GIFT Charity who runs this course in Hasmonean commended the students for their remarkable efforts: ‘I’m so proud of Naomi and Shoshi for the time, energy and more importantly, the courage and vulnerability it took for them to create such an impactful immersive workshop. We have already started planning next year’s event!’

The event concluded with each student receiving a wristband to remind them to look ‘Through Our Eyes’ and be more understanding of neurodiversity.

Kisharon raised £64,000 as 18 teams took part in a golf day at Hartsbourne Country Club.

Funds raised will help ensure essential services continue enabling people with learning disabilities can continue to thrive.

A morning of golf was followed by a drinks reception then putting with students from Kisharon Noé School followed by a barbecue by Jasmine Catering (KLBD).

Kisharon committee member Richard Weisfeld spoke about his son Max, who Kisharon supports, alongside Chief Executive, Richard Franklin. Richard shared that Max is “genuinely thriving” at Kisharon Supported Living.

“Max is happier and more fulfilled than we can remember,” he said. “He is experiencing events and opportunities we never dreamed of”.

Richard told guests about a trip to a horse riding centre that works with children and

adults with disabilities.

Trophies were presented by Kisharon chairman Philip Goldberg and committee member Tony Franks.

Emma Nagli, Kisharon fundraising manager said: “We are extremely grateful to all the golfers, sponsors and donors for their wonderful support of Kisharon. Pupils from Kisharon Noé School had great fun meeting and putting with players before lunch.”

Kisharon holds The heART Edit exhibition and auction on Thursday 22nd June. The event showcases works created by people with learning disabilities and autism who worked with established and emerging artists.

‘Lunch with Jenny Packham’ for Chai

On Wednesday 7th June, more than 200 women attended ‘Lunch with Jenny Packham’ at The Carlton Tower Jumeirah in Knightsbridge.

During the event, mother and daughter, Adrianne Morris and Gemma Wiseman moved guests as they spoke about how Chai supported their family through Gemma’s cancer journey. Gemma was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021.

Adrianne said: “At the start of 2021, my 40-year-old daughter Gemma had been sent for some scans to discover the cause of back pains she’d been enduring since a bout of Covid. What I did not know was that my life, our lives, were about to be turned upside down. Gemma had been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer that had spread to the liver. As a parent, it crosses your mind from time to time if they’re late or out of reach, that there might be an awful wrong place at the wrong time incident, but it never, ever, occurs to you that they might get cancer. Yet here we were, facing every mother’s nightmare – we held each other and cried – unable to believe what we had been told, looking at each other in disbelief

at the sudden shocking news our family had received.”

Gemma said: “Receiving a cancer diagnosis out of the blue is beyond shocking. It rocks your whole world, and nothing can prepare you for the whirlwind that follows that life-changing moment when you hear those two words, “its cancer”. A number of people urged us to get in touch with Chai. I was fully aware of Chai, as in my younger years I was part of a committee who held charitable events to raise money for them. I broadly knew what they did but didn’t fully appreciate the extensive range of services that they provide. And never could my young and naïve self have imagined that 20 years later I would be benefitting hugely from their support.

Now Chai are one of the most important parts of ‘my army’. They have been there for me and my family throughout, providing a whole range of support - physically, emotionally and mentally. Chai have been there in ways I never even knew I needed. Whether it was how and what to tell our then 3 and 5 year old children; the invaluable counselling; the different

complementary therapies to help the side effects of my surgery and chemotherapy; to the smiley faces that greet you when you enter the building; the amazing array of classes and opportunities for self-development and acceptance or to the massive, great big hug you feel like you’re receiving when you walk through the doors.

Chai made me feel like me again. No longer did I sit watching my husband and kids feeling like it was an out of body experience and that this was what it would be like when I was no longer around. I felt positive. I felt empowered. I felt well. I felt like me.”

Following a delicious lunch served by Ben Tenenblat and his team, Deputy Editor of The Telegraph Magazine, Naomi Greenaway, took to the stage with the iconic Jenny Packham. Jenny told Naomi about the A-list celebrities that have changed the course of her brand, why she mostly wears black and what inspired her to become a fashion designer. Jenny said: “My family were dressmakers and my mum would make anything she wanted to make so I think it was just innate that if you had spare time, you would make something. She was my inspiration

and it just felt like second nature and at some point I realised that it could be a job.”

Jenny also shared a personal story about her mother’s breast cancer journey and only finding out, after she passed away. She said: “It’s so wonderful that you can be here and just talk about it. It wasn’t that long ago that people didn’t. When I was 16 and doing my O Levels my mum had cancer. We lived in a very small house and she completely hid it from me. My mum probably didn’t tell me because she thought I would be scared that maybe I would have it. Cancer was almost a word you couldn’t say, but now, because of organisations such as Chai, we are able to talk about it.”

Chai’s Chairman, Louise Hager, said: “What is becoming more apparent is that not only do our clients need support during treatment, but in many cases we are needed even more so when they get the ‘all clear’. Post treatment our clients often describe feeling as though their safety net has been whipped away, and they feel very vulnerable and uncertain. At Chai we provide a safe haven where every aspect of this new life can be addressed.”

RECOVER FROM ADDICTION

RETORNO, ISRAEL

ADDICTION IS ONE OF

THE GREATEST ILLS of the 21st century, destroying the life of the addict and causing indescribable pain and suffering to his or her family members. The British Jewish community is not immune to this societal ill, and every month more men, women and teens fall prey to various addictions. The trouble is further compounded by the fact that there is no rehab centre in the UK that is suitable to Torah-observant Jews who wish to maintain their religious lifestyle.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO RETURN TO LIFE, AND THE EXPERIENCE CAN EVEN BE RELATIVELY

PLEASANT! This is the prevailing sentiment of those returning from a tour of Retorno, Israel’s premier rehab centre for the Orthodox sector which is located in a rustic area just outside of Beit Shemesh. Addiction is a universal illness that doesn’t distinguish between communities, sectors, genders or affiliations, and it encompasses a range from substance abuse to gambling to cigarettes, technology or alcohol. The scope and extent of addiction is tremendous, and it strikes people of every age and social class.

ADDICTION IS DEFINED AS UNCONTROLLED DEPENDENCY

that causes the addict to repeat activities or consume certain substances, even if he or she has no desire for it, since the avoidance of the source of addiction causes severe physical and/ or emotional distress and incites a desperate urge to relieve the experience. An addict is caught in a state of psychological and physical dependency on the activity or substance, which robs him of his freedom to choose and reduces his life to a vicious cycle of need and use.

Unfortunately, the Jewish community in England has no shortage of families dealing with the devastating patterns of addiction, and it is enough for one member of the family to suffer addictive behaviors to destroy an entire family from the inside. It’s important to realise that often a person’s addiction is not obvious to the world since addicts are pros at denial and concealment. Yet what that person might be an expert at masking from the world is much harder to hide from his immediate family, and therefore, what’s happening behind someone’s closed doors may be very different from what appears on the surface.

FINALLY, THERE’S GOOD NEWS FOR

BRITISH JEWS, with the solution being a short flight to Israel and a beautiful kosher rehab centre in Israel’s Givat Shemesh, right outside Beit Shemesh. In Retorno, a beautiful, spacious compound that fuses pastoral beauty with intensive therapies, people suffering from addiction find healing and recovery. Founded over three decades ago, Retorno Addiction Rehabilitation has bestowed healing and new life to thousands of former addicts, their spouses, children and communities, allowing patients to return home clean, eager to rebuild their lives, and empowered to live every day of life in control of their urges.

Founded over thirty years ago, Retorno has guided over 2,000 men and women through addiction treatment and recovery and given them a new lease on life. Our devoted, warm and professional staff is comprised of experts in the field of addiction counseling and therapy.

Originally founded in 1991 for the Jewish community in Mexico, the concept of Retorno was brought to Israel five years later by Rabbi Eitan Eckstein, a social worker, renowned lecturer, and one of the world’s foremost experts on addition. Retorno is widely-acclaimed in the medical world for its innovative treatment and prevention of a variety of addictions in all stratums of the population, based on the understanding and experience that addiction does not distinguish between sector, age or community. Retorno is recognised by the State of Israel and is highly recommended and endorsed by Rabbanim from every stream.

Treatment at Retorno includes staying in the Alon in the detox centre for men and the Elah detox centre for women. Both centres operate with full gender separation and with separate staff. centre that operate under the supervision of Israel’s Ministry of Health and with medical and mental health teams that specializes in addiction. Patients stay in the detox centres for a period of up to three months and then continue their recovery process within their community.

Retorno’s breathtaking campus amidst rolling green hills and tranquil lush valleys contributes powerfully to the rehabilitation process. The faculty is professional and attentive to the patients’ needs, while remaining focused on the singular goal of leading patients to reclaim their lives.

At Retorno, patients also gain from the religious atmosphere which includes kosher food with excellent kashrus certification, 3 daily minyanim, and shiurim in Torah and mussar. Shabbos and Yomim Tovim are celebrated in a Torah atmosphere. Retorno’s Rabbi, Harav Chaim Hellman shlit”a, lives on the campus, and avreichim come daily to learn with patients.

IF YOU’RE FAMILIAR WITH A FAMILY THAT IS STRUGGLING

with the addiction of one or more family members, or if you’re personally acquainted with anyone within the British Jewish community who is suffering from addiction and needs help, tell them about Retorno, the rehab centre that’s just right for them.

Retorno founder Rabbi Eitan Eckstein and members of the Retorno staff will be traveling to London and hosting a comprehensive 2-day open house in the course of which they will share information and content to the British Jewish community and meet privately with members of the community seeking advice and consultations.

Resource marks Volunteers’ Week

Resource marked national Volunteers’ Week 2023 in style by treating their loyal band of volunteers to a private tour of the Freud Museum in Hampstead.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.

Victoria Sterman, Resource chief executive, said: “There is no way we can thank our volunteers adequately, but this was a lovely way to show them how much they are appreciated.

“It’s directly due to the skill, experience and dedication of our volunteers that so many people who come to us for support are successful in their job search. They are exceptionally talented people and we simply wouldn’t exist and be able to do the work we do without them.”

The charity, which has been in existence for more than 30 years, has already helped more than 15,000 unemployed members of the community re-join the world of work, thanks in large part to the input from its dedicated team of volunteers.

Volunteers provide job-seekers with expert tailored advice, mentoring, networking and training, empowering them to find and fill the right job.

They fill a whole range of roles, including advisors, telephone support, finance, graduate buddies, trustees, event photographers, videographers, mock interviewers and grant writers.

Resource helps those from all backgrounds to find jobs at different stages of their lives, whether they are simply returning to work, have been made redundant, need a second job, have physical or mental health challenges or have come over as a refugee from war-torn Ukraine.

The volunteers, who represent 90 per cent of the organisation’s ‘workforce’, come from all walks of life, making them better able to understand the varied and often specialist needs of their clients.

An advisor with a wealth of corporate involvement is Natalie Smith, who is also a trustee.

She says: “I have been volunteering with Resource for five years, first as a trustee and more recently as an advisor. It has been a unique experience, partly because the team is so strong and supportive, but also because it is a privilege to be able to accompany our clients on their job search journey.

“During this time, I have met such a wide variety of clients, from graduates to returners to work, career changers to those who

have never worked before. Sometimes, making the first step to speak to Resource is hard for a potential client to do. But after that, I hope they feel reassured that they have come to the right place. When a client tells me they have found employment, I always experience the ultimate ‘job satisfaction’.”

Another volunteer Gillian Gurner added: “I joined Resource as a way to use my HR skills as I wound down the paid work I was doing. Volunteering keeps me in touch with the fast-paced, ever-changing world of work and you learn as much from clients as the other way around.

“I enjoy the feeling of success when a client gets a job, it’s so rewarding to see clients grow in confidence and regain their self-esteem. Volunteering allows me

to continue to give something back to the Jewish community.”

Jennifer Hoffman, marketing and communications manager, commented: “Demand for our services is growing, especially in light of the cost-of-living crisis and its knock-on impact on employment.

“Over the next three years we are planning to be able to support 50 per cent more people into employment, and to achieve this we need more volunteers. So, if you are looking for something rewarding and want to be part of a team, want to upskill or simply want to put back something into the community, this is your chance. Our volunteers all receive full support and training and form part of a small, friendly community of volunteers.”

Norwood’s property lunch raises £485K Beyond the Label - redefining beauty in our community

Seven hundred property professionals raised £485,000 at Norwood’s annual Property Lunch at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel on Friday.

Vital funds will benefit people with learning disabilities and autism and children and their families facing challenges.

Lunch committee member Edward Jackson welcomed guests by speaking about his family’s connection to the charity.

Edward’s brother received lifelong support at Ravenswood Village “day and night” with “dignity, love and attention by some of the most able and kind staff anyone could wish for”.

Referencing the event’s theme, re-energising the property community to make a positive difference, he added: “What lies at the heart of its success is your dedication and generosity towards Norwood to influence positive change and make a valuable difference to thousands of lives.”

Lunch committee co-chair Mark Pollack introducing the appeal film, which showcased the increased need for Norwood’s support in a challenging economic landscape caused by the cost-of-living crisis, Brexit and Ukraine war.

“Norwood impacts the lives of those who need them most,” he said. “We need your support to enable this to continue.”

Mark introduced Norwood resident Lara who lives in one of the charity’s supported living services. Relating her struggle to be accepted by peers growing up and her goal of independence, Lara paid tribute to the Norwood family.

She said: “I know that I am capable, and I also know that Norwood will be there for me when I need them.”

Calling on guests to contribute towards the £12m in voluntary contributions the charity relies on to deliver its life-changing support, Lara added: “Please help Norwood to help others become capable like me.”

Thanking Lara for her words, Mark called on guests to give generously.

“Every penny we receive will make a huge difference to thousands of lives,” he said.

Reflecting on the cumulative contribution to Norwood’s work over almost 25 years, Mark added that he was proud of the property industry in helping raise essential funds it needs to function effectively.

Guests enjoyed entertainment from standup comedian Simon Brodkin before a charity auction. Prizes included two premium tickets for a Madonna concert, a two-night stay at Temple Guiting Manor and Barns for up to 12 guests, and private hospitality suite for up to 20 guests at the Royal Windsor Racecourse.

The industry event was made possible thanks to Lead Event Sponsors Derwent London, Dwyer Property, Dominus and Savills, and media and data sponsor EG.

The event was carbon neutral with support of carbon neutral sponsor The Office Group.

One of the most inspirational events from last year is back bigger and better for 2023. Beyond the Label, which was initiated and organised by two students as part of the GIFT Charity Incubator Course in Hasmonean Girls School, aims to promote diversity and inclusion within the fashion industry.

Adina Rosenstein and Shira Gabai’s ‘Beyond the Label’ was a sold-out success and now that these two young women have finished their A-Levels, they’ve been working alongside GIFT to reintroduce the initiative this 27th June.

Adina and Shira’s ultimate goal is to show that an individual represents so much more than their ‘label’ and that we should be celebrating that uniqueness. Debbie Rosten from Kisharon, a Downs Syndrome model who walked in last year’s show, spoke at the event and exclaimed: ‘Labels are for jars and clothes but NOT for people’. This year, clothing and accessories are being generously sponsored by local stores: House of Lancry, Alona Karen Boutique, B7 Active, Fame, Keshet Couture (The Wardrobe),

Forever Alice and Bitz of Glitz.

The amazing line up of over 20 models of all ages, sizes, abilities and ethnicities will let their inner and outer beauty shine on the catwalk thanks to a selfless team of hair and makeup artists who are donating their time to this wonderful cause.

Bring your friends, Mom, sisters or cousins to enjoy an event you will never forget and cheer on these brave women! To register, please visit jgift.org/beyondthelabel.

ASK THE RABBI

DO I JUST GET OVER IT?

Dear Rabbi I endured childhood trauma. I have received therapy but and I am still carrying some of the scars. Sometimes that means that I feel down or unmotivated. Recently, a friend sort of snapped and told me that my attitude is not the Jewish way and that I need to “just get over it.” Is that really the Jewish way?

Dear Selina

People often say, “Get over it!” It’s a highly offensive comment to make. Frankly that’s the worst thing you can say to someone who is dealing with whatever issue. What it implies is a complete disregard for the other person’s experiences or emotions. What they should be saying is, “learn to let it go.” “Let it go” acknowledges your past and the fact that your past does affect you and maybe yes you need some therapy to help you move on. But you can control your thinking process. You can learn to not let your past define you in the present.

In mindfulness, there is a basic exercise where you are encouraged to think about something that happened in your past which to whatever extent still impacts on you years later. Then you are encouraged to identify the feelings that the particular memory is causing – fear, anxiety, sadness etc. You are then taken through a process where you are encouraged to sit straight and to close your eyes. You’ll be lulled through words to get yourself into a deep state of relaxation. And then you are

Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com

encouraged to start breathing, to feel your breathing, then to start feeling your body, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. All during the while there is a voice that is encouraging you along. And then you are encouraged to identify your immediate feelings in that moment, which typically will be somewhat if not very relaxed.

What’s really happening in that process? Your mind is being completely focussed on the here and now – on the present. When you are concentrating on your breathing, thinking all about your body parts and just staying in the moment, then (a) you become very relaxed and the previous anxiety is dispelled and (b) you are no longer thinking about that past event because you are being encouraged to focus all your attention on the present – on your breathing, your body etc. You get into the now, you get into the moment and you get into what is real. Everything else is concept. Right here, right now, this is your reality.

Now, of course you’ll say to me, but the past – I know it is concept, it’s not real but it still affects me. And the future, I know it’s not real but it’s going to become real one day and that affects me too. You know what?

You’re right! But, when you’re holding onto your past – when you allow for it to define you, then you become exacerbated, always plagued with the question, “how do I get rid of it? How do I get rid of it?” And so long as that question lingers, you are still living in the past and not in the present. You want to know how you get rid of it - well, as the mindfulness exercise proves,

in the moment, with your mind elsewhere, you got rid of it.

It’s a big realisation. The past only exists because you keep bringing it back up. When you do that, it’s going to stay alive – you are literally rehearsing your past in your head and thereby making your past part of your present. And that’s a problem!

There is a well-known story told of two Rabbis who were journeying together when they came to a river. There was a distressed woman standing there perplexed as to how she would get across. One of the Rabbis hoisted her onto his shoulders and carried her across before putting her down on the other side. The two Rabbis continued on their way, the other colleague lost in thought. Finally, unable to contain himself anymore he said, “I just don’t understand. How could you allow yourself to carry that woman like that?” To which the other replied: “The difference between you and me is that I put her down on the other side of the river. You, evidently, are still carrying her!”

That’s what we do – we carry our past with us! We keep it alive! But it’s a choice decision. Whether you like it or not, we can control our thinking process. You have control over every organ in your body and your brain, and by extension your mind, is no exception. If you think about the fact that man is comprised of mind, speech and action – and you appreciate that you are in control of your speech and you are in control of your actions, then you will recognise that you are very much in control of your thoughts as well. So, don’t get over it – but do learn to let it go.

Weekly Dvar Torah FROM ERETZ YISRAEL

‘How’, Not ‘If’

Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, a massive number of Russian Jews, largely uneducated in Jewish tradition, emigrated to Eretz Yisrael. With loving concern, Rav Avrohom Pam zt”l, one of the gedolei haDor and rosh yeshiva of Torah v’Daas in Brooklyn, founded “Shuvu”, a network of schools that provides Russian immigrants to Israel a comprehensive Torah education.

Toward the end of his life, physically frail, yet working tirelessly to raise funds and awareness on behalf of Shuvu, Rav Pam gave of his time and effort to save a generation of Jewish children.

At one point, facing a budget crisis, one of the schools seemed likely to close. The kids would most likely end up back in the non-religious public school system. Management consultants were urgently summoned, and experts analyzed the financial situation and demographics to

Shelach Lecha

determine the viability of the school. In the end, they found that the resources had been exhausted, and they regretfully recommended that the fledgling yeshiva close.

He was known for his mild-mannered, gentle demeanor, but now the gadol was incredulous. “Our tafkid, our duty here, is not to determine IF this project is viable,” fumed Rav Pam, “it is to ENSURE that it is viable – and to make it happen!”

Our sedra recounts the story of the meraglim, as they were dispatched to spy out the Promised Land, and to return

Sidra Summary

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 13:1-20

G-d tells Moshe to send spies into Cana’an (later the Land of Israel), one from each tribe. The names of the spies are listed. One of them is Hoshea, whose name is changed by Moshe to Yehoshua (Joshua). Moshe instructs the spies to enter the Land from the south, look at its landscape and assess the strength of its inhabitants.

Point to Consider: Why did Moshe specifically instruct them to enter from the south? (see Rashi to 13:17)

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 13:21-14:7

The spies enter the Land. They travel to the valley of Eshkol, where they cut a vine with a cluster of grapes which they carry on poles, as well as figs and

pomegranates. After 40 days in the Land, the spies return to share their report and show the people the fruit. Their report begins positively, but then warns of the powerful nations living in the Land and the strength of their fortified cities. Calev, one of the spies, tries to reassure the people that they will nevertheless conquer the Land. The other spies, except Yehoshua, contradict him, claiming that it is a land “that devours its inhabitants and that all the people are giants”. The people cry all night in response to this report and announce that they would seek a new leader who would take them back to Egypt. Moshe and Aharon despair at the people’s reaction to the spies’ report. Yehoshua and Calev tear their clothes in a sign of mourning, and declare the Land to be “very, very good”.

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 14:8-25

Yehoshua and Calev declare that G-d will ensure the Israelites’ conquest of the Land as long as they do not rebel against Him, but the people threaten to stone them to death. G-d laments the nation’s lack of faith and threatens to destroy them in a plague. Moshe pleads for forgiveness on their behalf, stressing

with their findings. Were the residents there strong or weak? Were they few or numerous? Were the cities there open or fortified? What was the topography like?

The meraglim gave their report: “The Land… does indeed flow with milk and honey… However, the people who inhabit the country are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large… We cannot attack that people, for they are stronger than us… That land… is one that devours its settlers. All the people that we saw in it were men of great size;… we looked like grasshoppers to ourselves, and that’s how we must have looked to them.”

The Ramban asks, ‘Why are the meraglim punished? Should they be criticized for reporting the truth? Weren’t they only presenting the facts from their perspective?’

The Lubavitcher Rebbe (Likutei Sichos, Vol. 13) teaches that it would have been legitimate to discuss and analyze in natural terms how Bnei Yisrael could potentially enter the Land. For example, they could have reported that they were outnumbered by their adversary, and that they also apparently had advantages in skill and power. However, their focus changed to an issue of whether or not they could achieve their mission. This did call for rebuke.

The Rebbe tells us: a Jew doesn’t ask ‘if’ only ‘how’. We all face regular nisyonos in our personal lives, whether at home, at work, or in our avodas Hashem and development of middos. When we are faced with a challenge, however, ‘how’ can we see it as an opportunity? We have already been assured that Hashem is with us – we are not called to ponder and determine this. We must shift our perspective from ‘if’ we’ll be able to accomplish or not, to ‘how’ we will achieve our goals.

Rabbi Judah Mischel is Executive Director of Camp HASC, and Mashpiah of OU-NCSY. He is a member of Mizrachi’s Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/ speakers

that other nations may claim that it was beyond G-d’s power to bring Israel into the Land. G-d relents, but with a qualification –all those who angered Him will not enter the Land (see next aliya).

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 14:26-15:7

“[The spies] arrived at the Valley of Eshkol and cut from there a vine with one cluster of grapes, and bore it on a double pole…”

G-d decrees that men currently over the age of 20 will die in the desert over the next 40 years. The spies die in a plague, except Yehoshua and Calev. Moshe tells the nation about the 40-year decree and they mourn. A group of people then try to enter the Land, despite Moshe’s attempts to dissuade them. They are brutally massacred by the Amalekites and Cana’anites. G-d tells Moshe to instruct the nation that when they bring animal offerings, these should be accompanied by a meal offering (mincha) and a wine libation (nesech).

(Bemidbar 15:39)

in the Land of Israel, one has to take a tithe from the dough (challah). The Torah specifies the offerings that need to be brought if the whole nation accidentally worships idols (Rashi).

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 15:8-16

The mitzvah to bring a meal offering and a wine libation extends to all offerings and to all members of the nation.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 15:17-26

When making bread from grain grown

7TH ALIYA

(SHEVI’I) – 15:27-41

The offering brought if an individual accidentally worships idols is detailed, followed by the punishments for intentional idolatry and blasphemy. A man is found desecrating Shabbat in the desert. G-d instructs Moshe to put him to death. G-d tells Moshe to teach the nation about the mitzvah of tzitzit (this passage is the third paragraph of the Shema – see green siddur, p.70).

HAFTARAH

The haftarah relates that just before the Israelites enter the Land, Yehoshua sends two spies. They go to Jericho and are hidden by a lady called Rachav, but their hiding place is revealed and she helps them escape. Rachav asks them to promise that when the Land is conquered, she and her family will be spared; the spies agree. The spies bring a favourable report back to Yehoshua.

What Compels Us to Speak Lashon Hara

In our previous article, we began exploring the nature of lashon hara and the unique nature of speech in general. Speech holds the power to create relationships, lift people up, expand people’s minds, and enable genuine communication and connection.

As human beings, we are naturally isolated and separate from one another. We are individual beings, all living in our own subjective world and inner universe. We will never be able to experience life through anyone else’s perspective — only through our own inner consciousness. We have our own thoughts and feelings; things no one else can see. We face our own hardships and tribulations that no one else truly understands. This results in several difficulties. If I am trapped in my own inner world, how can I connect with other people? How can I know what’s going on inside their heads? How can I share my inner life with them? How can I overcome the infinite barrier between myself and everyone else?

This is the gift of speech. Speech is the mechanism that enables us to connect with other people and overcome the barrier between us. You begin with your inner thoughts and experience. You then form the specific words that will encase your thoughts as you give them concrete form and throw these words out into the world around you in the form of vibrations. If another person is nearby, their ears can pick up these vibrations and translate them into sound. These sounds form words, and the words form sentences. They must then keep track of all the different words and sentences, hold on to them, and bring them back from memory as they work to recreate a complete picture of everything you said. Amazingly, this person can now experience your inner world inside their own mind. They now contain a piece of you within themselves. The barrier between your worlds has been diminished.

LASHON HARA: CORRUPTION OF SPEECH

Once we understand the purpose of speech, we can begin to comprehend just how abhorrent lashon hara truly is. Lashon hara takes the very tool of connection — speech — and uses it to disconnect people from each other. When you speak negatively about someone, you create a wall between the subject of your negativity and the person you are speaking with. The very tool of connection has been corrupted to achieve its opposite goal.

WHAT COMPELS US TO SPEAK LASHON HARA?

Now that we understand the severity of lashon hara and its devastating effects on those around us, we must ask the obvious question: Why do we feel so compelled

to speak negatively about others? If we are clearly disconnecting people from each other, misusing the holy organ of connection in the process, why is it such a struggle to avoid negative speech?

There are a few reasons for the strong sense of satisfaction we feel when we gossip about others. As we mentioned above, people are naturally lonely and isolated, and therefore yearn for connection and yearn to be liked and accepted by others. Many people try to connect with the person they are talking to by putting someone else down. After all, stories about other people’s pitfalls are

it forces us to question our own accomplishments in life. The quick and easy fix to this problem is to speak lashon hara about anyone who challenges us. If we tear them down and reduce the significance of their accomplishments, our own worth is protected.

Of course, this is not an appropriate way to generate self-worth. Instead of raising yourself up and investing in your own spiritual and existential growth, you instead drag someone else down. In both scenarios, you appear to have achieved success, but only one is real, only one is genuine, and only one is lasting. When

connection and twists it into disconnect and falsehood. While the listener thinks he is connecting to you, nothing could be further from the truth.

ISOLATION

We can now understand why the punishment for speaking lashon hara is temporary isolation. The person who spoke lashon hara disconnected people from each other. As a result, he now becomes disconnected from everyone. He misused the organ that helps free one from the isolated prison of one’s inner world; as a result, he now becomes isolated in his own inner world, separated from everyone in his life, incapable of any communication and connection with the rest of Klal Yisrael. This punishment is not only punitive in nature; it is reformative as well. This time in isolation gives him the opportunity to contemplate his past failures, helping him truly understand the pain of isolation and disconnect and hopefully motivate him to create connection and harmony going forward.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF SPEECH

often amusing. Thus, we attempt to connect to those around us by disconnecting both ourselves and the listeners from the person we are talking about. The irony, though, is that this actually achieves the exact opposite effect. The person you are speaking with now knows that you talk about people behind their backs, and they have no reason to believe that you won’t do the exact same thing to them the moment they leave the room. Therefore, in your attempt to create connection with this person through disconnecting someone else, you have now disconnected yourself from everyone!

Another equally problematic motivation for speaking lashon hara is the desire to feel good about oneself. We all desire to feel important, significant, and worthy of respect. (This desire is rooted in the fact that we were created b’tzelem Elokim, the fact that we are, in truth, Godly, and that we are each destined to achieve our own unique greatness. Self-worth and confidence are not bad; only distorted self-perception, ego, and haughtiness serve as a problem.) We not only desire the love and admiration of others but our own as well. Often, when we see the success of people around us, it challenges our self-worth, our ego, and

you put someone down, you may appear to have achieved success, but you have gained nothing. You are left only with a fleeting, false sense of ego, pervasive disconnect, and the resulting lack of personal growth.

LYING

The other corruption of speech is lying. Unlike lashon hara, which uses truth to create disconnect, lying is fabricating your own truths. Speech gives a person the ability to express his inner world — to genuinely connect with another through sharing inner consciousness, expressed outwards through speech. When a person shares a lie, the other person thinks that he has connected with you, that he knows something from within your inner world, and that you have bequeathed a piece of your very self to him. In truth, however, all he has is the lie you have fed him. Speech is the mechanism of expressing internal truth outwards; lying is a manipulation and misuse of the very purpose of speech.

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for connection is “kesher,” and, not coincidentally, the Hebrew word for a lie is “sheker” — the exact same letters but scrambled. Lies corrupt the potential for genuine connection. Sheker takes the potential for

Speech is powerful. It’s a tool of connection, communication, and expression. You can tell a lot about someone by listening to what they talk about. As the saying goes, small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds discuss ideas. Speech can be used to tear people apart, destroy relationships, and pass the time, but that is not the path to greatness. We can use speech to bridge the walls between us, to discuss the loftiest ideas and ideals of life, and to gain a higher sense of clarity and connection with both the people around us and our inner selves. When we speak, we share our souls with the universe, we express what we value, and in doing so, we also tell the world, “This is how I use my gift of speech.” May we be inspired to harness the full potential of our ability to speak and use speech in order to build genuine connection, understanding, and oneness.

What is our portion of Torah?

When my son was born two years ago, one of the first messages I received was from a friend who had worked out that his Bar Mitzvah in 2034 will be on Parashat Noach. I felt a sense of excitement at this. He had just been born, and yet already had something tangible in his life relating to Torah. As he grows up, I hope that he will pay special attention to Noach each year and develop a love and connection to his parasha.

Fast forward to last Shabbat, and I was reading a children’s parasha picture book with my four-year-old daughter. I told her that this week’s parasha, Shelach, was special for me, since it was my Bar Mitzvah parasha (as I live in Israel, we read Shelach last week). Her response surprised me. She said that she wouldn’t have a special parasha as that is only for boys! Naturally, she has picked up

on the fact that she has only ever seen men reading from the Torah in shul. Despite explaining to her that she will also become Bat Mitzvah, and that she will therefore also have a special parasha (Tzav, in her case), this moment was a reminder of the need to be more creative to help her to develop a love and connection to her parasha.

I recognise that in my case, the connection to my parasha has deepened over the years because I am comfortable reading from the Torah each year. However, this is not practical for most people. Moreover, there are many people who do not know what their parasha is at all, or who have

not learned any more about it since they were a child.

I believe that for many men and women, this current reality involves a missed educational opportunity. Everyone should feel that they have their own parasha, regardless of practice surrounding the Reading of the Torah and people’s ability to read it.

In our Shabbat prayers we ask G-d to ‘Give us our portion in your Torah’. One of the ways to make this a reality is to study and connect with our Bar or Bat Mitzvah parasha. This is true for boys and girls, adults and children alike. First, for many people it is necessary to work out what

our parasha is: for this, go to the Bar/ Bat Mitzvah calculator on chabad.org. Then, could we give, and encourage those around us to give, a Dvar Torah about our parasha at the Shabbat table, at the start of a JS lesson in school, or on Shabbat in shul?

As my children grow up, Tzav and Noach will be special Shabbatot in our home. I hope that they study, cherish and find meaning in their words before, during and long after their Bat and Bar Mitzvah. In Parashat Shelach, Calev says to the despairing co-spies and people “let’s go up and take possession of it [the Land of Israel], because we can surely do it!” So too, may we all take possession of our portion in Torah for it is an inheritance for every Jew.

Family Fun Shelach Lecha

One of the best-known stories of the Torah, is taught regarding the spies. The Jewish people clamoured that they wanted to send spies to see the most efficient way of conquering the land of Cana’an. Moshe got approval from Hashem and sent a representative of each tribe. He named Hoshea as Yehoshua, praying that he be saved from falling for the (eventually) evil intentions of the spies. The other righteous one among them was Kalev. Moshe gave the spies guidance as to what to look out for.

Anyway, the spies left, touring the land over 40 days and came across some scenes which frightened them, such as giants. To display how unusually large and strong the nations were, the spies brought back gigantic fruit, such

as grapes, figs and pomegranates. They came back from their tour of the land and told the Jewish people – yes, it is a land flowing with milk and honey, BUT the inhabitants of this land are too strong even for Hashem! The Jewish people were devastated and cried and demanded to return to Egypt! Yehoshua and Kalev tried to convince the people otherwise, but their words fell on deaf ears.

Hashem was angry with the nation and decreed that the entire generation will die in the Midbar – all those between the ages of 20 and 60 would not enter the promised land.

The spies also died an unusual death – besides obviously for Kalev and Yehoshua.

Some of the Jewish people tried to

Word Search Dingbats

travel on to the Promised Land, but Moshe warned them that their attempts will not succeed as they go against the will of Hashem.

We are taught the special Mitzvah of Challa, a dough offering, which is separated when preparing a certain large quantity of dough. This was to be given to the Kohanim. We are also taught some of the laws surrounding Korbanot and what happens if a Mitzvah was neglected by the community.

A man was found gathering wood in the Midbar on Shabbat and in view of his public desecration of Shabbat and being warned against doing so, he was put to death. Some say that he had good intentions and may have been Tzelaphchad, whose daughters’ request we read about in a couple of weeks’

time.

At the end of the Parsha, Hashem gives Moshe a unique Mitzvah for men – to wear Tzitzit on four cornered garments. These serve to remind us of the Mitzvot of Hashem, and we must ensure that they are Kosher before we put them on! We are also told not to stray after our eyes and hearts – a mistake that was unfortunately made by the spies and paid off until today! For, Hashem said, “You cried for nothing – I will give you something to cry about for generations”. The night that the Jewish people cried over their lack of ability to conquer the land, was the night of Tisha Be’av which was the date of the destruction of both Batei Mikdash. How we yearn to see these rebuilt speedily and in our time!

Shelach Lecha is the fourth Sidra in the book of Bemidbar.

It contains 119 verses, 1,540 words and 8,820 letters.

Each of the 12 spies, represented a Tribe. Only Levi did not have a spy, as they had no portion of land in Israel.

EXPERT ADVICE

Dear Martin

I’m moving to Israel. How can I keep using my UK phone number?

Dear Yossi

Congratulations on your move to Israel. I hope you settle in well! It seems that staying in touch with people in the UK is important to you & by retaining your UK phone number, you’ll be able to do so. However, roaming in Israel is generally quite costly on a foreign SIM card, especially long term.

Having provided mobile phone plans to thousands of UK clients, we saw this as a big issue many years ago & came up with a solution. We now have a large number of clients who travel to Israel on a frequent basis & don’t pay anything extra for roaming on any Israeli mobile network with their Smartinet UK SIM card, using the same UK phone number they’ve always had, to make & receive calls and text messages.

You can also call & text Israeli phone numbers whilst in Israel, with no additional fee. Oh, and when you revisit the UK, you can call back to Israel for no additional fee. Feel free to reach out to the Smartinet team for more information.

Wishing you a safe & enjoyable journey!
