How to Build a Terrarium

Last year I went through a serious gardening kick. Yes– in spite of the fact that I was living in a mainly carpeted residence building, I wanted to garden. My mom has always nurtured the most beautiful flower beds, tended miniature herb gardens in our kitchen to make the most amazing bruschetta with, reaped bounties from our garden– I’m pretty certain we have photos of my sister and I posing with a wagon overflowing with root vegetables– and recently she added greenhouse gardening to her repertoire of horticultural gifts and experience. Me, on the other hand … I’m not exactly well-endowed in the plant department. That being said, I have always considered gardening to be one of the most wonderful hobbies. I remember planting sun-

flower seeds in paper cups at Aggie Days and marveling at the stem that shot out of the soil, reaching towards the sky with every passing week. It’s that sense of wonder that you’d imagine a teenager and certainly an adult would outgrow, but strangely enough, I’ve never found it to dissipate. The natural choice for me, of course, was to begin a collection of houseplants– cute little flowers that would welcome me home each day and bring some life into the otherwise lifeless space. The catch? They needed to be low-maintenance. My quest for low-maintenance gardening yielding adorable miniature plants ended when I discovered terrariums. My interest piqued when I discovered that creating your own custom terrarium was a simple, therapeutic art project that was as fun to do alone as it was to do with friends. Now, I am a proud mama to four terrariums, and more recently, a potted tropical plant, and they never fail to greet me cheerfully whenever I return home. And so, in pursuit of sharing this joyful hobby with others, I have created a straight-forward guide to help you get started in the wonderful world that is terrarium building!

Note about terrarium placement:

- While these are relatively low maintenance plants, they do require specific environments and types of care. Prior to purchasing your plants, decide on where you will be placing your terrarium. Will it be at work or at home? Will it receive full sunlight? Will it have to face gusts of winter air on a regular basis? when deciding whether you will choose to include succulents or tropicals in your terrarium. And remember: while they’re sure to bring you endless cheer, tropicals and succulents don’t go well together in the same jar. Keep it simple and hassle-free!

What you will need + brief instructions:

1. A glass jar: Any shape or size is permissible, but keep in mind that there is an inverse relationship between glass size and difficulty level. Place a thin layer of miniature gravel in the bottom to prevent root rot. 2. Potting soil: Proper soil is crucial for healthy plants. Push the soil up to form a well in the centre. 3. Plant Plugs: These are miniature plants that have a little rectangle of soil suspending their roots. Prior to planting, I recommend that you gently pinch the soil off of the roots. Lay them against your wall of soil and fill in more dirt, slowly propping the plants up. 4. Natural Landscaping Pieces: Rocks, lichen, big chunks of moss, and sand are great tools for personalizing your jar and creating a miniature garden. Use as you wish! 5. Decorations: One of my favourite parts of terrarium building is adding items that give your terrarium personality and a theme. Be creative! Here are some themes and suggested items to create the desired scenery: a. Beach: Tropicals or succulents; white sand, pink sand, white or pink gravel; purple and yellow lichen; sea urchins, starfish, sand dollars, shells, chunks of driftwood. b. Desert: Succulents; white sand, an assortment of rocks; light green, purple, and yellow lichen; chunks of driftwood, large crystals, dark and smooth pebbles. c. Forest: Tropicals or succulents, select according to the variety; a large chunk of moss as a backdrop; light brown pebbles; dark green, light green, and red lichen; chunks of driftwood, miniature white spotted mushroom figurines.

Where to get stocked up:

- Walmart has low cost, albeit simple, jars. Most of my terrariums live in fishbowl-like jars I purchased from Walmart and they are both elegant and uncomplicated to work with. - Plant Shop is one of many reasons why Inglewood is my favourite area in the city to spend an afternoon. If you want a onestop-shop for your terrarium-building endeavour, there truly is no other place (I’m pretty certain they recognize me whenever I come in…). Here, you will receive personalized service, find a wide range of plugs, decorations, jars, pots, and other gifts. You can even sign up for gardening classes if you want to learn how to develop a green thumb, build a terrarium with expert advice (this one I did with my Mom), or even create beautiful wreaths at Christmas time. Of course, these are only suggestions to get you started. Part of the fun of this process, as I mentioned earlier, is having the opportunity to use this time as an artistic outlet, bring some life into spaces of your home or office, or even spend some unique, quality time with those you love. And of course, Pinterest is always there to lend you some ideas when you’re not feeling overly inspired. Happy planting!

Many people blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone removed. One day, a peasant came along carrying vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the way. After much pushing and straining, he finally managed. After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and note from the King explain that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the road.”

Don’t say something you regret out of anger

“There once was a little boy who had a very bad temper. His father decided to hand him a bag of nails and said that every time the boy lost his temper, he had to hammer a nail into the fence. On the first day, the boy hammered 37 nails into that fence. The boy gradually began to control his temper over the next few weeks, and the number of nails he was hammering into the fence slowly decreased. He discovered it was easier to control his temper than to hammer those nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father the news and the father suggested that the boy should now pull out a nail every day he kept his temper under control. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. ‘You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.'”

Stop wasting your time complaining

“People visit a wise man complaining about the same problems over and over again. One day, he decided to tell them a joke and they all roared with laughter. After a few minutes, he told them the same joke and only a few of them smiled. Then he told the same joke for a third time, but no one laughed or smiled anymore. First Time Pets Children Can Care For By Robin Lawson

Caring for a pet teaches compassion, responsibility, and empathy. When a child has their own pet that depends on them for its needs, they are able to learn skills essential to growth and emotional maturity. However, high-maintenance pets such as dogs and cats are too much for a child to handle alone, as they require training, guidance, exercise, veterinary checkups, transportation, and other tasks that ultimately fall to the parents. Thankfully, there are a number of animals that make amazing pets for kids. Children are perfectly capable of assuming the responsibilities for the care of these beginner pets.

Rat Though images of green slime and dark sewers might come to mind, pet rats are far from dirty creatures. These curious and friendly rodents can be kept in a number of cage types with bedding, newspaper, and a place to burrow and curl up. They eat pellets and rodent chow available at any pet store and can also be fed treats such as apples and peanuts. Their cages are easy to clean as they tend to pick a corner to do their business. Rats have no problem being handled and may even enjoy curling up near the warmth of someone's neck or crawling up a sleeve. With a pet rat, kids may find their new friend likes to hitch a ride on adventures around the house.

Be it human or animal, touch is a life-giving thing. Has anyone ever had a stroke or a heart attack while cozied up with a pet? I doubt it. ~Robert Brault

Betta Fish The stunning, flowing fins of a betta fish are a joy to watch. These brightly coloured fish are the simplest aquatic pet to care for. They can be fed a diet of fish pellets and live in tanks sized five gallons and over. Kids can practice animal care by providing food and cleaning the aquarium before owning pets with greater needs. Though fish can't be handled, the sight of graceful fins as the betta darts, drifts, and turns is fascinating to witness.

Hamster Few things exist that are cuter than a round, nibbling hamster. Pocket-sized and beady-eyed, hamsters are happiest burrowing in bedding and shelters, munching on rodent chow, and running in exercise wheels. Because of their small size and tendency to skitter, hamsters must be handled with care. Kids learn delicacy from gently holding their hamster and caring for it. Nothing will melt the heart quite like the puffy cheeks and twitching pink nose of a fluffy hamster.

Guinea Pig Nature's chillest rodent, the guinea pig is a social creature that thrives on attention. They're affectionate and cuddly, making them perfect for kids who want a pet they can interact with. Though they're tough critters, they need guinea pig food, a water bowl, a large cage, bedding, hay, chew toys, and a hidey hole to live happily. Leopard Gecko Every kid on the block would be jealous of someone owning one of these neat little spotted lizards. Hardy for reptiles, leopard geckos live up to twenty years and have excellent survivability. Their bulbous tails store enough fat to sustain them for a whole month in the rocky areas of the desert -- though it's bad for their health to go without eating for so long. Their diet consists of live crickets and meal worms, which are inexpensive and relatively easy to keep, so long as no one's squeamish. They can be housed in a 10 to 20-gallon terrarium. Since leopard geckos are nocturnal, they're active at night and simply need a day lamp under the tank heater to keep warm. Unlike other geckos, leos have claws instead of adhesive pads and can't scale glass. That doesn't mean they don't like to climb, however, and are happiest with prop rocks and structures to crawl over and hide in. Decking out the ultimate terrarium can give kids a fun and creative project. After initial setup and instruction, kids can take over caring for a leopard gecko on their own. Most of these lizards are calm and tamable, making them perfect for handling, though they don't need social interaction to thrive. Any of these animals would make fitting first-time pets for children, though it's important to monitor and instruct kids to ensure every pet is getting the love and care it needs. Daily tasks of supplying food and water and cleaning cages teach discipline, and the emotional connection between pet and owner supports children as they develop and learn more about the world and its inhabitants. A Moment of Silence Taking Time to Remember November is always a busy month. It seems like it shouldn’t be, but it somehow sneaks up on us every year. Thanksgiving and Halloween are behind us, but Christmas is on the horizon, which means that November kicks off the start of the holiday shopping season for many folks as they try to get ahead of the game. Black Friday continues to make

its way into Canadian stores and shopping malls, creating another “holiday” to plan for and work around. If you’re a student, chances are you’re spending November buried in books – wrapping up midterms, preparing for finals, and pushing to get all those end-of-semester assignments ready for submission. If you’re a parent, this month means helping your kids excel in their studies as their homework piles higher and deeper around them with each passing week. Even work seems somewhat frantic as everyone races towards the close of the year, eager to finalize projects, reports, and submissions before the fast-approaching holiday break.

As busy as November (not to mention our lives in general) can often be, it’s important to take some time this month to put on the brakes for a second, stop, and reflect on a few things – namely, the notion of remembrance. It’s an easy thing to forget and

brush off in all the chaos that everyday life brings, but here at The Newsy Neighbour, we’ll be taking some time on the eleventh

hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month to pause…

…and reflect on those brave men and women who gave so much in order that we might enjoy our beautiful nation of Canada in unfettered freedom as we do today. This Remembrance Day, as with all Remembrance Days past and future, we’ll stop what we’re doing, and for one brief moment out of the whole 365-day-long year, we’ll focus on what it means to sacrifice and to stand on guard for the True North, strong and free. We could spend time in this article talking about the brave Canadians whose heroic acts during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Normandy Invasion, and countless other pivotal engagements helped to turn the tide during WWI and WWII. We could write a lengthy essay lamenting the unfathomable tragedy of 104,944 Canadian lives lost in service to their country between World Wars I and II, not to mention the thousands who have died in conflicts around the globe since. We could pen an entire issue of this magazine dedicated to those who have died in the name of freedom – of Canada – in the 151 years since Confederation…but the thing is, no matter how many words we devote to the cause, it will never be enough. It’ll never even come close. And so, we pause for a moment of silence. We pause to dwell on the pain, the heartbreak, and the horror that war brings. We pause to reflect on hope, freedom, and independence. We pause to be thankful for everything we have, and for our great, wondrous nation. We pause to look back on the past, and to gaze ahead to the future. We pause to consider the political division and strife that’s running at a fever pitch right now, and to contemplate a better, more peaceful way forward. We pause to remember – because if we don’t take the time to consider the mistakes we’ve made, we’re bound to repeat them again. This Remembrance Day, take the time to remember. Wherever you are at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – whether you’re shopping, studying, or working – pause for a moment of silence, and take the time to truly, earnestly reflect on our nation’s past, present, and future. Be grateful for all that we have, and honour those who paid the ultimate price for us to enjoy our lives, our freedoms, and our country. Remember what it means to be Canadian – we know we will. Did you know that as a senior you can elect to stop paying Canada Pension Plan contributions (CPP) if you are over the age of 65, but under the age of 70 as long as you are in receipt of a CPP or QPP (Quebec Pension Plan) retirement pension? A copy of this form must be filed with both your employer and the CRA. Once filed, employers should cease CPP deductions the first pay period of the month after the month in which they receive the form. Maintaining Purpose after Retirement Often when we look forward to retirement, it is with hope and joy. We imagine all the things we will finally have time to do, the trips we want to take, or the golf games to play. But how often does retirement truly live up to our expectations?

The experience of retirement is frequently less glamorous than expected. There may be a few weeks of enjoyment of the newfound freedom, but then the boredom tends to set in, resulting in different questions such as, “What do I do with my time?” or, “What is my purpose now that I am not working?” The boredom and questioning can lead to new ideas and encourage people to try out new activities; other times, it results in a sinking depression. Retirement can be a joyful occasion, but it is unnatural for the human mind to remain completely idle. Throughout life, we are working or learning constantly. Once we reach age 65, we are often encouraged to slow down and be idle, but our brain is not always ready or prepared for this slow down. Thus, a feeling of loss or depression can begin. In the retirement years, it is common for individuals to experience depression; unfortunately, it is an unspoken subject. How do you know if you or a loved one is suffering depression? Often, people argue that they are not experiencing depression as they are not sad. This common misperception is that sadness is a necessity to depression. However, depression is experienced in different ways across the lifespan. Individuals 65+ can experience increased medical complaints and medical office visits, withdrawing from social activities one used to attend, increased sleep but still feeling tired, and increased anger and frustration. Being able to identify the presence of depression or feeling a lack of purpose is one piece, but how do we prevent it or attempt to heal ourselves. There are many strategies that can be done without the help of a professional. Three easy techniques to try are; learning something new, staying socially involved, and finding ways to share wisdom gained over the years. There is an adage, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’. This idea is wrong! There has been no scientific study that has proven that people can not learn anything new past a certain age. In fact, the opposite is true; there have been many studies and personal stories of people learning a new trade, hobby, skill, or language at any age of life, including well past the golden standard age of retirement. Learning new skills could be anything including furthering education in a specific area, or learning an instrument, or a new hobby. The type or what is learned is not the focus. Rather allowing the brain the ability to remain engaged helps to reignite a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

We are social beings and being forced into isolation is detrimental to our mental and physical wellbeing. Staying connected does not have to be a massive undertaking, rather it can be done in small ways. For example, staying connected with old friends and family, making new friends, being present in the community, even sharing time with a pet. The goal with decreasing isolation is ensuring it is enjoyable for the individual. For example, many studies have shown a strong correlation between interactions between kids and seniors, resulting in benefits for both sides. Other studies have also shown strong benefits of spending time with a loved pet. The final piece of the big three to help maintain a feeling of self worth and purpose, is to share wisdom that has been gathered through the years. I have spoken with many who feel they do not have personal wisdom to impart. Many view wisdom with lofty expectations. Wisdom is not always Earth shattering, rather it is simply the little anecdotes and lessons you have learned throughout your life. Sharing wisdom does not need to be in a classroom or in front of others, rather this can be done through story telling, writing a memoir, songs, or pictures. Our brains are not meant to be idle as we age, and we are not meant to be isolated. Rather we are meant to remain social, active, and to pass alone the wisdom from a well-lived life. Staying present and active through learning and social interactions allows us to maintain the purpose often associated with having a career.

Exercise: Getting exercise doesn’t mean that you have to visit the gym four days a week for an hour each day! Simply being more active than you were before can help your health. Go on long walks a couple times a week, and progress into a jog if your body can handle it. You can also visit the gym and lift light weights to help build muscle. As mentioned before, muscle helps decrease your dependence on using insulin to burn sugar into energy, so it helps decrease your insulin resistance in the long run. Lose weight: Typically, a combination of the previous two methods results in losing weight. Eating less fatty, high-sugar foods combined with an increased exercise regimen often results in the burning of fat at a more reasonable and efficient pace. Even losing 5 to 10 percent of the weight you’re currently at can decrease your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. (For example, if you weigh 250 pounds, losing 15-25 pounds is a great goal to set to start regulating blood sugar levels.)

gorgeous, but different fall we have had. It is still my favourite time of year. Roger likes it a ton as well. Heading into winter, Roger and I have renewed our membership at the walking track in Strathmore. Such a great way to get your steps in, whether you are diabetic or not. It is inexpensive and very accessible. If you have not been there yet this fall, let this be the reminder that you need to get your feet down to the track for some steps.

Personal Safety Tips for Seniors Take a self-defense and personal safety class. These programs teach specific skills for noticing and avoiding a dangerous encounter. Learning confidence and physical strategies is empowering and as such, we are perceived as less of a target or victim. Often, just by having the skills and knowing we can perform them if needed, improves our self-esteem. We hold our heads up higher, walk with more confidence and give the impression that we are alert, deliberate and strong.

This month we are focusing on Seniors, and that brings to mind the topic of PREVENTION. As we age, our risk of Diabetes increases, so let’s talk about Prediabetes for a sec. Roger found some great information on Prevention on the National Council of Aging Care Aging.com. There is such amazing information out there for whatever your need is.

1. Establish a Buddy System and build a close circle of friends to stay in touch with daily. Checking in with a friend and having them check in on you offers a sense of security and personal connection so that if anything goes wrong or seems suspicious, you can discuss it in real time. 2. Keep doors and windows locked and install a peephole in the door. DO NOT feel the need to open the door – ever. Make sure you recognize the person at the door and that they are welcome in your home. 3. When shopping, take a friend and park as close as possible to the entrance of the shop. Shop during daylight, keep purchases in the trunk, lock your doors when you get into the vehicle. 4. If you feel uneasy about someone approaching your vehicle, press the horn until the person leaves. 5. Be alert to your surroundings and the people around you. Make brief eye contact, hold your head up and look confident. 6. Do not carry valuable information in your purse or wallet. Make photocopies of important cards and carry the copies with you –

Just because you are diagnosed as prediabetic, it does not mean you will definitely develop diabetes. You are more likely to, though, and you should start to pump the brakes immediately. As your blood sugar levels are climbing to dangerous levels when you are prediabetic, there are lifestyle changes you can make to help those numbers trickle down to normal levels once again. Here are THREE GOALS to focus on to make help you in your fight to avoid the transition from Prediabetic to Diabetic. Use them as reminders in your daily planning.

If you feel threatened or uneasy, hold your hands up in front of you and shout firmly “NO”, or “STOP” or “STAY BACK”. No need to be polite, no need to be friendly. 10. If you are grabbed or assaulted, strike back at the perpetrator: use your fists or elbows, kick shins or knees, stomp on their foot, strike their throat or ears. Make sure you are attracting attention from others – many times this will cause the attacker to leave you alone.

FINGER NAILS I use to have the most wonderful doctor many moons ago. Her name was Dr. Martin and she delivered all of my children. She retired many years back, but I think she was the best doctor I ever had. I remember every single time I went to see her she would take my blood pressure, look in my ears and eyes and always looked at my finger nails. I had forgotten all about it until I read an article the other day on fingernails. Did you know your nails can reveal clues to your overall health? A touch of white here, a rosy tinge there, or some rippling or bumps may be a sign of disease in the body. Problems in the liver, lungs, and heart can show up in your nails. This is what they can tell you. Pale Nails Very pale nails can sometimes be a sign of serious illness, such as: Anemia, Congestive heart failure, Liver disease, Malnutrition White Nails If the nails are mostly white with darker rims, this can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis. Yellow Nails One of the most common causes of yellow nails is a fungal infection. As the infection worsens, the nail bed may retract, and nails may thicken and crumble. In rare cases, yellow nails can indicate a more serious condition such as severe thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes or psoriasis. Bluish Nails Nails with a bluish tint can mean the body isn't getting enough oxygen. This could indicate a lung problem, such as emphysema. Some heart problems can be associated with bluish nails. Rippled Nails If the nail surface is rippled or pitted, this may be an early sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis. Discoloration of the nail is common; the skin under the nail can seem reddish-brown. Cracked or Split Nails Dry, brittle nails that frequently crack or split have been linked to thyroid disease. Cracking or splitting combined with a yellowish hue is more likely due to a fungal infection. Puffy Nail Fold If the skin around the nail appears red and puffy, this is known as inflammation of the nail fold. It may be the result of lupus or another connective tissue disorder. Infection can also cause redness and inflammation of the nail fold.

Gum Disease

Many older adults have gum, or periodontal disease, caused by the bacteria in plaque, which irritate the gums, making them swollen, red and more likely to bleed. One reason gum disease is so widespread among adults is that it’s often a painless condition until the advanced stage. If left untreated, gums can begin to pull away from the teeth and form deepened spaces called pockets where food particles and more plaque may collect. Anyone Want to Host a Baby Teenage Shower?

I recently went shopping for two things. Real shopping, in a real store, not online. A store with clerks, and people and what I had hoped was enough selection to accomplish my shopping goals. Those of you that have read my articles know how enjoyable I find shopping. It’s right up there with getting a root canal without freezing or spending seven hours on the team bus filled with teenage boys. The first goal on my shopping list was a baby gift for a baby shower that is coming up, and the second, winter boots for my fourteen-year-old. The first was super fun to shop for and so many wonderful things to choose from. From pampers to prams, sleepers to swinging share to snot sucking bulbs to peepee-teepees. Everything a new parent could need, along with lots of expensive useless, but really cool stuff too. Not so much fun was found winter boot shopping. Somewhere between the Sorels and Columbias in store number nine or ten I had an epiphany. Well, two, actually. The first epiphany was that my kid has insanely huge feet. The second, teenage showers need to become a thing. (I don’t mean the bathtub kind – although those need to be mandatory). As joy-filled and exciting as baby showers are, I would gladly give back every single baby sleeper, plush toy, and diaper tower that I received if only someone would through me a teenage shower. See, here is what I’m thinking. Babies are expensive but they have nothing, and I do mean nothing, on teenagers. Maybe we need to celebrate both the birth of our children and their arrival (survival) at the teenage years. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if one day you came home from work and all your family and friends had gathered? Balloons

CABBAGE SOUP AND LITTLE STEPS

I tried this cabbage soup diet a few years back and thought I would give it another shot. I am not very good at sticking to change in my life but I have learned just to keep on trying. If you don’t succeed the 1st time, maybe the 2nd or 3rd time will work. I will do my Yoga faithfully every single day for a week and then the next week I will find all sorts of excuses why I don’t have time to do it. This is how we are. I read an article not too long ago about why change is so hard in our lives and the bottom line is we expect instant gratification and when that does not happen, we give up or move on to something else. Before I move on with this “Wonder Soup” to lose weight recipe, I am going to give you some great tips I found to help keep you on course.

Little Steps You Can Try If you want to lose weight, try replacing one meal a day with a salad or cut down the sugar in your coffee, or have one less can of energy drink or soda.

Let me explain. You do not have to live on the diet and you can eat other things. This is not punishment! Take it slow and just consume as much of the soup that you feel like that day. I like it in the morning for sipping and drink it out of a mug. For lunch have the soup with a piece of toast for dipping. And if you do not feel like soup again for dinner that’s O.K. Just do the best that you can do and drink your water. Trust me you will see a difference after a week of this. I did and if I can stick to it anyone can.

It was another powerful evening at Women Talk Strathmore on October 17th!

As the motivational talker of the evening, I shared how my own life has changed since I became involved with Women Talk four years ago. Finding this tribe of extraordinary supportive women that have encouraged me to step into my power, I no longer feel ‘less than’ when I am in a room filled with others. Our first talker Kathleen found a power within herself on several occasions when she had to walk away from everything she knew to reinvent herself four different times over her adult life. Stepping outside of her comfort zone was always scary but necessary. Even though she didn’t know how or what she needed to do next, she found a strength she didn’t know she had that carried her through. Leslie shared her short journey of meeting the love of her life when he was in remission only to lose him to cancer shortly after they were married. A heartwarming love story, she embraced the journey, without attachment and learned to love the “whole person”. She asked, “What do you want to do with the lessons of life”? JoAnn spoke of the profound grief of losing her mom that took her to her ‘dark night of the soul’. She talked of the importance of traveling through it, finding and stepping into her purpose and how a dream she had showed her how to see the joy and not the loss.

October 10th was another fabulous evening at Women Talk Langdon.

So much inspiration from this amazing woman! Growing up in extreme poverty in the Philippines, Angie overcame the adversity and limiting beliefs with gratitude. She has gone on to create an amazing abundant life here in Canada and gives back to help the impoverished in her home country.

Director of Women Talk Calgary South, Michelle told us of how she went from severe depression to her life expression. Michelle is the most vibrant and fun, high energy person I have ever met. She used nutrition to turn her mental health around. And we heard from Darlis, as she shared her biggest takeaways of the last few years after losing her home in a fire. Listening to her, it became very apparent that she has learned and gained far more from that experience than she lost. Do you crave sweets? I find the only time I crave something sweet is after I have eaten a savory meal and normally in the evening, of course the very worst time you should be eating something sweet. I’m not a chocolate person more of a Jube-Jube, licorice or mint kind of person. They say black licorice is good for you, but it tastes awful. So, I made a mission to find healthy alternatives which are low calorie and I can make at home so I know there are no preservatives or other bad stuff. These recipes sound delicious to me and are very easy to make. These sound delicious although I am allergic to cinnamon so I will just leave that ingredient out.

Well, it happened again. I had an “episode”. That is what my family calls my little moments where I don’t know where I am or what’s going on. I kind of forget how to walk, how to go to the bathroom, and forget how not to poop on myself. Personally, I like to think it makes me unique, but they get all worried and take me to the vet. Mom even made the monster children say goodbye to me. HA!!! I sure fooled them. I am back with a vengeance and healthier than ever. I even got a fancy new haircut, so there! I like to keep them on their toes, thinking that I’m going to die then BAM – I don’t. I stay alive, eating all the food and all of Stella’s food and all the crumbs all over the floor. I stick around, making them take me for multiple walks a day. Last night, just to keep everyone on their toes, I started barking in the middle of the night for no reason. 1 cup (164 grams) of cooked chickpeas 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive oil 2 tablespoons (30 grams) of brown sugar 1 tablespoon (8 grams) of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of salt Preheat your oven to 400°F and bake the chickpeas for 15 minutes. In a bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Remove chickpeas from the oven, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with the cinnamon topping. Stir until fully coated and bake for another 15 minutes. It can be hard to get your hands-on fresh dates but if you can these sound amazing!

ALMOND-DATE TRUFFLES

20 Medjool dates, seeded and halved 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/3 cup creamy almond butter 1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 1/3 cup plus 1 Tbsp. Natural Cocoa Powder 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/3 cup toasted almonds, well chopped Put the dates and vanilla in a food processor and run until a chunky paste forms. Add the almond butter and pulse a few more times. Add the coconut, cocoa powder, salt and cinnamon and pulse a few more times. The mixture should be a tad crumbly, but press between your fingers and stick together. If it seems too wet to hold in a ball, add more coconut, if too dry, add a touch more almond butter or a splash of water. Roll a heaping Tbsp. of the mixture between your palms to form a ball. Repeat with remaining mixture. Put your chopped almonds on a plate and roll each truffle in the almonds (apply a bit of pressure to get them to adhere). Place the plate in the fridge to chill for at least an hour. Truffles will keep covered in the fridge for a couple weeks. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

RAW HAZELNUT SANDWICH COOKIES

Makes about 12 cookies INGREDIENTS: For the cookies: 1 ½ cups raw almonds or toasted, skinned hazelnuts 1 ½ cups pitted dates ¼ cup raw cacao powder ½ tsp pure vanilla extract ¼ tsp sea salt For the frosting: 8 oz almond milk cream cheese (such as Kite Hill) or regular cream cheese 5 Tbsp pure grade A maple syrup ½ tsp pure vanilla extract DIRECTIONS: To make the cookies, place all ingredients into a food processor and process until the mixture comes together. To make the frosting, add all ingredients to a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and whip until smooth, about 4-5 minutes. To assemble, roll the cookies between two pieces of parchment paper to ¼-inch thickness or until desired thickness is reached. Using a round cookie cutter (I used a 1 ¾-inch round), cut rounds and place on a cookie sheet or platter and place in the refrigerator to chill for 20-30 minutes. You can repeat with any remaining scraps, continuing to roll and cut rounds until all of the dough is used up. Once the cookies have chilled, remove from the fridge and place a dollop of frosting in the center of one cookie round (about ½ tablespoon) and place the other cookie on top, pushing down evenly until the frosting begins to seep out all sides. Using a clean finger, wipe off the excess frosting around the perimeter and place the finished cookie back in the fridge while you make the others. Keep cookies in the refrigerator in an airtight container where they will last for up to one week.

3 INGREDIENT MAPLE ALMOND FUDGE

I am making these today, talk about easy! Melt in your mouth fudge which uses just three healthy ingredients- None of which are butter, oil, flour or sugar! This recipe uses one bowl, takes less than ten minutes and requires no baking or cooking! It’s also naturally gluten free, vegan, paleo and refined sugar free! YES!! 2 cups smooth/drippy almond butter 1/2 cup coconut oil 1/4 cup pure maple syrup Instructions Line a 12-count muffin tin with muffin liners and set aside. In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, melt your almond butter with coconut oil. Stir through your pure maple syrup and mix until fully incorporated. Divide mixture evenly amongst the lined muffin cups and place in the fridge or freezer to firm up. I make mousse at Christmas but mine is much different from this one. Mine has Peppermint Schnapps and Chocolate liqueur and it is sooo good. My daughter says it tastes like Christmas! Not quite as healthy as this one, but we only have it once a year. You have to be bad sometimes!

CHOCOLATE AVOCADO MOUSSE

4 servings 2 ripe avocados 2 tbsps. unsweetened cacao powder 2 tbsps. cold coffee 2 tbsps. pure maple syrup ½ tsp vanilla extract Combine all ingredients in a food processor until well blended. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and chill for at least two hours. So, there you have it 5 yummy healthy recipes for a guilt free snack. O.K. We will still be paying for the 10.4 per year billion overspend of previous governments through the 5 million dollars a day we pay in debt servicing. This is the interest on the debt. We are not even paying the debt down yet. That is a school a week! That is 30,000 teachers! We will still have a debt of close to 90 billion even with our budget projections due to that debt servicing, the 3-billion-dollar electricity capacity market boondoggle, and the ridiculously expensive multi-billion dollar rail by crude scheme. These are the consequences of the poor management of our finances over the past years and we are now paying the price for that. It has been an eye-opening experience seeing the wasteful mismanagement of our precious tax dollars. The rate payer now has to pay off the mismanagement of the electricity file. This is a line on your electricity bill that says balancing pool. I know this is overwhelming, but we can do this together. We have been through so much together and we will come to balance together and united to take care of our future generations and not saddle them with our debt and our mess. Hello Newsy Neighbour Readers! Well, it has been a very busy week with the release of our provincial budget. It has been an honour working thoughtfully with my caucus and cabinet colleagues on building a budget that understands our fiscal situation while still maintaining funding to education and health. There were additional dollars put into mental health beds, the opioid crisis, seniors and housing and into community and social services. All of the ministries looked within to find savings and to work together to make sure that we take care of vulnerable Albertans. There were many difficult decisions to make in order maintain fantastic public services especially for those most in need. We’ve managed to find 15% overall savings in the ministry of Culture, Multiculturalism and the Status of Women while at the same time we are continuing to invest in our wonderful communities. We have increased investments to support inclusion and diversity through multiculturalism and status of women. Albertans mandated us, in the last election, to get our finances in order and we

Keeping the Memory Alive – Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion

With over 340,000 members, the Legion is one of Canada’s largest community-based service organizations, contributing millions of dollars and volunteer hours. They are responsible for the perpetuation of “REMEMBRANCE” in Canada through the Annual Poppy Campaign - reminding Canadians of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the wars and military missions around the world. Poppy funds collected are used for assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families who are in need. The Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion is the second oldest branch in Alberta and celebrated 85 years since receiving their charter on Oct. 8, 1926. Previous to 1926, the Legion was known as the Great War Veterans’ Association. On Remembrance Day, November 11, the Legion holds a memorial service to remember the nation’s losses. The ceremony starts at 10:30 A.M. at the Civic Centre and lasts until 12:30. There are guest speakers and the cadets and R.C.M.P. donate their time to the ceremony, placing the wreaths. What a sight to behold as all the veterans will be in uniform – my chest wells with pride just thinking of it. The moment of remembrance begins with the bugling of “Last Post” immediately before 11:00 a.m. with two minutes of silence and ending with the playing of a lament, the bugling of “The Rouse” and the reading of the Act of Remembrance. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. RESPONSE: We will remember them Following the ceremony at the Civic Centre, all are welcome to attend the Field of Honour ceremony at the Strathmore Cemetery and finishing at the Legion with chili and buns. All are compliments of the Strathmore Legion. The afternoon will be spent sharing stories and comradeship with all the veterans and friends. There will be music playing wonderful old tunes and a truly fulfilling day will be had by all in attendance.

Letter from an airline pilot: He writes: My lead flight attendant came to me and said, "We have an H.R. On this flight." (H.R. Stands for human remains.) "Are they military?" I asked. “Yes,” she answered. “Is there an escort?” I asked. “Yes, I've already assigned him a seat.” “Would you please tell him to come to the flight deck? You can board him early," I said. A short while later, a young army sergeant entered the flight deck. He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier. He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier. The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us. “My soldier is on his way back to Virginia,” he said. He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him, and he said no. I told him that he had the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers. The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat. We completed our pre-flight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure. About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin. “I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board,” she said. She then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father home. The family was upset because they were unable to see the container that the soldier was in before we left. We were on our way to a major hub at which the family was going to wait four hours for the connecting flight home to Virginia. The father of the soldier told the flight attendant that knowing his son was below him in the cargo compartment and being unable to see him was too much for him and the family to bear. He had asked the flight attendant if there was anything that could be done to allow them to see him upon arrival. The family wanted to be outside by the cargo door to watch the soldier being taken off the airplane. I could hear the desperation in the flight attendants voice when she asked me if there was anything I could do. “I'm on it,” I said. I told her that I would get back to her. Airborne communication with my company normally occurs in the form of e-mail like messages. I decided to bypass this system and contact my flight dispatcher directly on a Secondary radio. There is a radio operator in the operations control center who connects you to the telephone of the dispatcher. I was in direct contact with the dispatcher. I explained the situation I had on board with the family and what it was the family wanted. He said he understood and that he would get back to me. Two hours went by and I had not heard from the dispatcher. We were going to get busy soon and I needed to know what to tell the family. I sent a text message asking for an update. I saved the return message from the dispatcher and the following is the text: “Captain, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. There is policy on this now and I had to check on a few things. Upon your arrival a dedicated escort team will meet the aircraft. The team will escort the family to the ramp and plane side. A van will be used to load the remains with a secondary van for the family. The family will be taken to their departure area and esThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

corted into the terminal where the remains can be seen on the ramp. It is a private area for the family only. When the connecting aircraft arrives, the family will be escorted onto the ramp and plane side to watch the remains being loaded for the final leg home. Captain, most of us here in-flight control are veterans. Please pass our condolences on to the family. Thanks.” I sent a message back telling flight control, thanks for a good job. I printed out the message and gave it to the lead flight attendant to pass on to the father. The lead flight attendant was very thankful and told me, “You have no idea how much this will mean to them.” Things started getting busy for the descent, approach and landing. After landing, we cleared the runway and taxied to the ramp area. The ramp is huge with 15 gates on either side of the alleyway. It is always a busy area with aircraft manoeuvring every which way to enter and exit. When we entered the ramp and checked in with the ramp controller, we were told that all traffic was being held for us. “There is a team in place to meet the aircraft,” we were told. It looked like it was all coming together, then I realized that once we turned the seat belt sign off, everyone would stand up at once and delay the family from getting off the airplane. As we approached our gate, I asked the co-pilot to tell the ramp controller we were going to stop short of the gate to make an announcement to the passengers. He did that and the ramp controller said, “Take your time.” I stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake. I pushed the public address button and said, “Ladies and gentleman, this is your Captain speaking. I have stopped short of our gate to make a special announcement. We have a passenger on board who deserves our honour and respect. His Name is Private Godfrey, a soldier who recently lost his life. Private Godfrey is under your feet in the cargo hold. Escorting him today is Army Sergeant Doan. Also, on board are his father, mother, wife, and daughter. Your entire flight crew is asking for all passengers to remain in their seats to allow the family to exit the aircraft first. Thank you.” We continued the turn to the gate, came to a stop and started our shutdown procedures. A couple of minutes later I opened the cockpit door. I found the two forward flight attendants crying, something you just do not see. I was told that after we came to a stop, every passenger on the aircraft stayed in their seats, waiting for the family to exit the aircraft. When the family got up and gathered their things, a passenger slowly started to clap his hands. Moments later more passengers joined in and soon the entire aircraft was clapping. Words of God Bless You, I'm sorry, thank you, be proud, and other kind words were uttered to the family as they made their way down the aisle and out of the airplane. They were escorted down to the ramp to finally be with their loved one. Many of the passengers disembarking thanked me for the announcement I had made. They were just words, I told them, I could say them over and over again, but nothing I say will bring back that brave soldier. I respectfully ask that all of you reflect on this event and the sacrifices that millions of our men and women have made to ensure our freedom and safety in these USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England. ~ Author Unknown

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM While we go to services around the country to remember all our valiant men and women Veterans, this year we are also recognizing those who fought in what has been termed “The Forgotten War”, the Korean War, which was fought from 1950 to 1953. It was a conflict that occurred way too soon after the Second World War. In 1950 North Korea poured all it had on South Korea. The newly formed United Nations protested, but to no avail. Eventually, this became a full-blown war with the members of the United Nations and South Korea on one side, and the Chinese and North Korea on the other, and our men were once again called upon. Canada made a larger contribution in proportion to her population than most of the nations which provided troops for the international force. It also marked a new stage in Canada’s development as a nation. Canadian action in Korea was followed by other peacekeeping operations which have seen Canadian troops deployed around the world in new efforts to promote international freedom and maintain world peace. There are 2,267 servicemen buried in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, Pusan, Korea. Of these 1,588 were Commonwealth soldiers, including 378 Canadians. A total of 516 Canadians lost their lives.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM As we are remembering our Veterans, another faction of the forces must also be commemorated: The Native Soldiers. The First Nations People had people in the first and second World Wars and the Korean War. Yet, they were also forgotten. They have much to be proud of. More than 7,000 Natives served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, and an unknown number of Inuit, Metis and other Natives also participated. One Native veterans group estimates that 12,000 Natives served in the three wars. Each time, Canada’s Native soldiers overcame cultural challenges and made impressive sacrifices and contributions to help Canada in its efforts to restore world peace. It was an incredible response consistent with a remarkable tradition. War should never be glorified. And, the sacrifices and achievements of those who participated must never be forgotten. We owe it to our veterans to keep the memory of their service alive. THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD. AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN. Brown your meat choice in large pan add chopped vegetables, seasoning and jar of spaghetti sauce. 2. As you are doing this add your lasagna noodles to a large pot of boiling water. 3. You will need a large 8 x 12 cake pan and spray with pam or butter it.

CHEESE SAUCE: 4 eggs 1 large container cottage cheese 1 large package mozzarella cheese 2 Tablespoons Italian seasoning 1. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. 2. Hold back a little under half of the cheese to use as topping. Now we start layering. First start with the meat sauce. Spread an even amount all over bottom of pan. Then add a layer of noodles. On top of the noodles spread a layer of cheese mixture. Then repeat. I normally get three layers of everything. Once you’re done layering, put a generous amount of mozzarella on top of everything. Bake in a 350°F oven for about 1 and a half hours. Keep an eye on it, as it might be done a little sooner. That sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it? Like I said, it is just time consuming. I love creating and cooking a dish like this. It is very satisfying when you see your beautiful lasagna in the end.

On the other hand, our short-term memory holds information temporarily. It also only has enough storage capacity for 5-9 pieces of data at a time (no wonder I forget where I put my keys!). Yet, it is estimated that people are exposed to as many as 10,000 pieces of information every day between conversations, texts, email, social media, advertising, television, radio, driving, and so on. Our brains cannot take in all that data so it applies selective filtering (similar to selective hearing??) and only retains information that it determines has value or is relevant. The rest? Well, most of it we do not even remember experiencing.

How much do you accurately remember about what you learned sitting behind a desk in school? I bet it’s a small fraction of the information you were given. What you do remember is probably

This is why we can drive by a new business (several times) and not even notice it; our brain does not recognize it as a piece of ‘need to know’ information. It is also why it often takes multiple ‘touchpoints’ (points when people interact with a brand) before potential clients or customers are consciously aware of your message. Awareness happens when their brain says, “Hey! We keep seeing this message so maybe it’s important and we need to pay attention.” Or they become consciously aware because they are interested in your product or service whereas before, it was not something they needed or wanted. You are already part of their long-term memory if they know you but remember, it doesn’t take long for people to forget so it’s important to continually engage them. Wondering how you can get past the brain’s gate-keeper so it lets your message into people’s conscious awareness and longterm memory? There are several ways to do this with one being getting your message in front of your ideal peeps more often and in different ways. This is often referred to as multi- or omni-channel marketing (check out the Newsy Neighbour’s offer to help you do this). Another option is to hire an experienced marketer to develop a marketing plan with the right mix of online and offline strategies (there is one who is a contributing writer in this magazine). In addition, you can actively involve and engage people by sharing your knowledge or expertise so they get to know, like and trust you. This could be delivering workshops, posting instructional videos, building relationships and networking. Regardless of the method you choose, the first step is to clearly understand what you truly offer (it’s rarely your product or service), knowing what people are really buying (you may be surprised at what it is) and determining the best way to deliver your product, service and expertise so you have more repeat and referral business (this is the super creative fun part that can position you as the go-to in your industry!).
