TRAVEL 2022

TOP LGBTQ+ DESTINATIONS BY DOMINIC ELLIS

LGBTQ travelers have been waiting to get back on the road and discover new destinations as well as reacquaint themselves with some old favorites. 2022 is supposed to be when traveling will be back in high gear. Coming out of such a long period of constraints and limitations, 2022 will be the year we wring every bit of richness and meaning out of our experiences. From gorgeous beach destinations to dynamic urban experiences, LGBTQ travelers are always looking for that next “new” place to visit. One thing to remember, though: The world is still in a state of uncertainty. So, if you’re planning a trip anywhere these days, you should check travel restrictions for the destination you are hoping to visit and consider warnings from the State Department and the CDC. Because no matter what type of trip you’ve been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2022 into the year you get back out there and make it a reality. Here are the top destinations that should be on the radar for queer travelers in 2022.

THAILAND Thailand, known for its lush tropical beaches, fascinating ancient ruins, and gorgeous Buddhist temples, has also been long regarded as the most LGBTQ-friendly country in all of Southeast Asia. The country is especially progressive toward transgender people, who are arguably more a part of mainstream life here than most other places in the world. The beach resort towns of Pattaya and Phuket are known for their gay beaches and lively LGBTQ+ nightlife. Pattaya’s queer red-light district, BoyzTown, will ensure you have an unforgettable time. Nearby Phuket also offers wild nights (including famous ladyboy shows), white sand beaches, and luxurious boutique hotels like La Flora Resort Patong. Or spice up your trip by staying at the Aquarius Gay Guesthouse & Sauna.

MALTA Malta might be one of Europe’s tiniest nations, but when it comes to LGBTQ rights, no country has taken bigger strides toward equality. According to the Spartacus Gay Travel Index from 2021, the only nation more queer-friendly than Malta is perpetually-kind Canada. Malta is a place where same-sex couples stroll hand-in-hand without worry and where gender identity is a non-issue. The queer scene isn’t as large as a Mediterranean magnet like Mykonos, but it’s still mighty. Pembroke Beach, the unofficial gay seaside hang, is a fifteen-minute drive from Valletta, as is Michelangelo, Malta’s gay nightclub. Maori, a lesbian-owned bar adorned with quirky art, peers over the HMS Maori shipwreck off the Valletta coast. The Birdcage Lounge, a queer-friendly cocktail bar, hosts drag shows and kooky cabarets in the nearby village of Rabat. Lollipop, a house-and-disco dance party, throws queer-centric pop-up events once or twice a month.

MEXICO The Indigenous people of Mexico were historically accepting of the queer, trans, and nonbinary folks among them until European colonists brought Christianity (and consequently, queer-shaming) to the continent. However, today many locals hold tight to their Indigenous ancestry and it’s a growing movement to return to pre-colonization ways of living and thinking, specifically in terms of queer acceptance. The country has expanded LGBTQ+ protections in recent years, and most areas welcome out travelers with open arms. If you haven’t heard (have you been living under a rock?), one of the most beautiful, fun, queerfriendly places in the country is Puerto Vallarta, these days often referred to as the “San Francisco of Mexico.” The thriving gay scene is centered in Zona Romántica, a concentrated area of hotels, resorts, queer bars and nightclubs, and a gay beach on the main shore. For beachfront luxury stay at Almar Resort, an exclusive LGBTQ+ hotel. For a wild time off the beaten path, Piñata PV Gay Hotel offers rustic charm and clothing optional pool parties.

NEW ZEALAND New Zealand has long been a bucket list destination for nature lovers, and it’s also a sought-after destination for queer travelers as well. The nation is divided into the North and South Islands, with the former being the more populated of the two. South Island has a buffet of travel options for the intrepid LGBTQ+ traveler. Start your visit in Christchurch, staying at The George, a 5-star hotel that overlooks Hagley Park and is a short distance from the famed Christchurch Botanic Gardens. But don’t limit yourself to the bright lights of the city.

AUSTRALIA The LGBTQ+ love affair with Australia began for many with the iconic movie, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but it continued with the great food, queerfriendly nightlife, friendly people, the Great Barrier Reef, and miles of unspoiled beaches. Sydney is the country’s gay capital and home to Mardi Gras, its unique version of Pride. The quirky yet refined 5-star Ovolo 1888 Darling Harbor Boutique Hotel is centrally located. See the famed Oxford Street gay district with a private tour from The Fabulous Wonder Mama (@thefabulouswondermama), a wealth of knowledge and humor who also possesses some of the biggest peaks this side of the Grand Tetons. Bondi Beach is perfect for working on your tan or taking a surfing lesson. From there you can stroll the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk. The pathway’s natural beauty hides a dark past during the 1980s when a number of gay men lost their lives thrown from the cliffs onto the rocks below.

SPAIN Spain remains a coveted LGBTQ+ tourist destination despite its deep Catholic heritage. Whether you choose to walk the historic Way of St. James in the north, explore the Gaudi architecture and nightlife of Barcelona, or party nonstop on the Mediterranean isle of Ibiza, you’ll never be at a loss for activities of every kind in the Iberian Peninsula nation. Queer travelers looking to let their hair down after a long global lockdown simply head directly to Sitges for a wild and crazy gaycation.

MAY 2022 7

COVER NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA The island of Newfoundland is a nature- and history-lovers paradise. It’s also a safe, queer-inviting destination, as demonstrated by a program from the Association For New Canadians to sponsor LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. Newfoundland’s quaint capital of St. John’s is the oldest city in the country at over 500 years and counting. The British colonial architecture can still be seen alongside later styles of more traditional Canadian fishing villages. The hilly terrain might remind you of San Francisco, as will the array of fresh seafood restaurants. Find LGBTQ-welcoming boutique accommodations at establishments like Gower Manor Historic B&B.

BELGRADE, SERBIA The Pride celebration that serves a greater purpose. Quiet streets with outdoor dining, Belgrade, Serbia is an underrated gay travel destination. In September 2022, Belgrade will host EuroPride — an exciting development for a city with a tumultuous queer history. “The first Pride was a protest” may be a slogan honoring Marsha P. Johnson-era America, but it’s a modern memory in Belgrade. When the Serbian city held its first Pride march in 2001, it ended in violent clashes incited by right-wing extremists. The march returned in 2010 and was met with extremists who threw Molotov cocktails and shot rubber bullets. But in the past decade, LGBTQ life has improved significantly, and this year’s Pride gathering is a sign of the city’s growth.

IRELAND Though the Irish take their “wearing of the green” tradition seriously, they’ve accepted the colors of the LGBT community long ago and gay expats all over the world will gladly confirm it. Ireland is one of the most well-regarded and well-loved countries in Europe and offers a friendly and welcoming gay scene. Dublin is one of the top cities for social life in the region with an English-speaking populace known for its sense of humor and hospitality. With its good track record on gay rights, Ireland is a welcoming place for LGBT travelers looking to set up a base. Gay travelers will find extensive gay clubs, bars, hotels, and other institutions around gay culture in Ireland.

PORTUGAL The party never stops in Portugal. Like neighboring Spain, there is a thriving gay life in this Western European nation, as well as being known for particularly beautiful and funloving people. Portugal gay rights record and gay life in major cities like Lisbon and Porto is likewise vibrant.

ARGENTINA Argentina has sought to position itself as one of the most gay-friendly countries in Latin America. Despite being heavily Catholic, Argentina was one of the earliest adopters of legalized same-sex marriage. Even foreigners can get married in Argentina. It has also given full rights to adopt children, earning a reputation among “the most advanced in the world” for gay rights. Not only was Argentina the first South American country to legalize gay marriage, but they’ve also long had a law allowing civil unions. For gay travelers visiting Argentina, the capital city of Buenos Aires has a bustling gay scene with plenty of friendly bars and hotels.

THE PHILIPPINES The Philippines is an awe-inspiring country to explore, and when it comes to LGBT rights, they’re not strictly determined, but South Asians in these parts tend to mind their own business and leave prejudice behind. The Philippines is one of the more open countries for LGBT visitors, and its capital Manila is one of our topmost livable cities in Southeast Asia. Although it does not have a highly sophisticated legal framework, the country markets itself as a welcoming destination for both Western foreigners and Asian travelers alike. Oftentimes, countries in Southeast Asia have an interesting relationship with the issue of homosexuality: While certain aspects of the culture are quite traditional and familial, there is often more room for differences of sexuality as well as gender, which have always been seen as sort of matter of fact. These countries are less subject to the “machismo” ideals found in the Americas and even parts of Europe. Nearby Thailand also exemplifies this with the inclusion of transgender people and/or “ladyboys” in the society as a normal thing, thus conjuring less animosity towards the idea of gender-nonconforming people and different forms of sexuality.

ISRAEL If the Middle East is calling out to you, but you’re not certain where to go, Tel Aviv, Israel is your best bet. Though surrounding countries are conservative, Israel’s capital is by far the most accepting of LGBT individuals. Israel is known for its vibrant gay scene particularly concentrated in the urban area of Tel Aviv and has been rated by some accounts as the world’s best gay travel destination renowned for its beaches and social life (and, by some accounts, attractive people!). This country is no stranger to conflict in the region both on a religious and political basis and its society general seeks to uphold the rights of LGBT individuals even despite some tensions that might be felt with more orthodox/conservative religious influences.

TEN CITIES TO ADD TO YOUR TRAVEL LIST PALM SPRINGS We start this list with Palm Springs, a queer paradise located roughly 100 miles from L.A. It has been an ideal getaway for many years, thanks to its combination of sunny weather, great restaurants, gorgeous mountain views, outdoor activities, culture, and fabulous midcentury modern architecture. The area features roughly a dozen clothing-optional men’s resorts, with price points all the way from economy to luxury.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO Puerto Rico’s capital city is a bustling metropolis that offers wonderful cuisine, beaches, history, museums, and a thriving gay scene. From clubs like SX to the drag shows at Kweens Klub or lesbian bars like El Cojo, there is something for everyone. Further afield, visitors can sample waterfalls and natural waterslides in El Yunque National Forest, the island’s famed rainforest—or kayak into one of the area’s bioluminescent bays at nighttime to see this bucket-list-worthy natural wonder.

TOKYO Japan’s largest city is home to one of the largest queer communities in all of Asia. And the city of 14 million residents has plenty of excitement to offer, with culture, food, history, and sightseeing topping the list for most visitors. The Shinjuku Ni-chrome neighborhood is considered one of the top LGBTQ areas, with numerous clubs and lounges to sample, but also great shopping, bookstores, coffee shops and more to see during the daylight hours.

MAY 2022 11

COVER OAHU, HAWAII Hawaii’s most populated island is most LGBTQ-centric, thanks to the population center of Honolulu. Queer travelers will love the island’s beaches as well as its nightlife, and Oahu offers something for everyone, from the somber memorials of Pearl Harbor to the quiet, 1950s vibe of the North Shore. Honolulu has a fantastic food scene, and you can later burn off those calories climbing Diamond Head or by taking some surfing lessons on Waikiki Beach.

LISBON, PORTUGAL Balmy Lisbon is an ever-more-popular queer destination, with loads of culture, museums, fantastic architecture, some wonderful nearby beaches and eminently wanderable hilly streets. Gay marriage became legal in Portugal in 2010, and although it is a predominantly Catholic country, the people here are welcoming and accepting. Gayborhoods to explore in town include Principe Real, Chiado and Bairro Alto.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA Just 30 miles north of Miami’s international bustle, Fort Lauderdale boasts one of the highest concentrations of same-sex couples in the country. Travelers will find it easy to get to, with many inexpensive flights, and once there, they’ll come across endless beaches, myriad gay clubs, and fine restaurants. Haulover Nude Beach is a popular LGBTQ hangout. And even if you run out of things to do, fabulous South Beach is a short drive away!

SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA Southern California’s nearly perfect climate, combined with San Diego’s endless stretches of idyllic beaches make this a go-to for LGBTQ visitors—and the area’s large queer population is an added draw. A trip here can mean plenty of relaxation time on the sand, or you can wander the progressive Hillcrest neighborhood, shop, and dine in the quaint Gaslamp Quarter or check out the bars in North Park. There are also plenty of recreational opportunities on the water, from kayaking to sportfishing.

COVER LONDON, ENGLAND The queer community in London is one of the most established in all of Europe, with an extravagant nighttime scene and the main gayborhood centered in Soho in the West End. The Soho area boasts numerous gay and lesbian clubs, bars, shops, and cafes and would make for a fine trip all in itself. But don’t fear exploring other parts of London—the city has greatly expanded its queer-friendly neighborhoods, and today, you’ll find rainbow flags clustered in areas like Camden, Vauxhall, Clapham, Islington, and Hampstead.

AUSTIN, TEXAS Keep Austin Weird has been a mantra for this funky city for many years, and despite the huge influx of population over the last two decades, the locals have mostly been able to keep that spirit alive. And the Texas capital has also been one of the most gay-friendly cities in the country, regularly scoring a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index. Whether you’re jogging or boating on Lady Bird Lake, catching incredible live music on 6th Street or sampling cuisine from vegan to Tex-Mex, Austin will keep you coming back for more.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA This glamourous town has long been on the queer radar, with fabulous resorts and even more fabulous bodies situated at seemingly every hotel pool happy hour. Shows are an attraction here, and queer audiences will enjoy many of the sexy offerings, such as the Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Live! at the Flamingo Las Vegas or Thunder Down Under at Sahara Las Vegas. Plus, the city’s endless shopping, world-class restaurants, and—oh, yeah—the gambling is sure to keep even the most jaded traveler smiling.

DESTINATIONS THAT ARE UNAPOLOGETICALLY ANTI-GAY BY CINDY GOMEZ

With the previous article in mind, here are a few destinations you might want to think twice about before you plan a trip there. In many of the places on this list, LGBT rights improve every year. But, recognition rarely equals acceptance. In some countries, samesex marriages are recognized and celebrated. But, toleration and acceptance of the LGBT community is far from universal. Being queer is illegal in nearly 80 countries and punishable by death, including some very popular travel destinations. MALAYSIA This tourism driven nation seems quite prosperous and peaceful, but you may want to reconsider stopping at this antigay destination as you travel. Being gay is still criminalized by current laws. Punishments include fines, up to 20 years in prison and even cane whippings.

16 THESTANDARDPS.COM

JAMAICA Many will be disappointed to find that this hot vacation spot is actually on the antigay travel list. The beautiful island is one of the least gay friendly areas in the world. Violence against gay travelers has increased recently, and discriminating laws enforce punishments that include up to 10 years in prison. INDIA Tourist throughout the world flock to India to view its stunning architecture and experience the unique culture, but India has taken some giant leaps backwards in regards to equality in recent years. With violence and imprisonment very real risks, this is not a destination to be out and proud.

EGYPT As one of the wonders of the world, you would think Egypt would be a great place to include in gay travel destinations. Unfortunately, being gay is still very taboo in the home of the pyramids. DUBAI This stunning city is quite liberal and progressive. So it may come as a surprise that, each year, tourists in Dubai are charged with “gay offenses.” Punishments range, but the death penalty is not legally out of the question. This antigay places should be avoided as you travel. PERU Though being gay is not actually illegal, it is best not to be open about orientation in this conservative travel destination. The attitude towards gay people is very intolerant, and gay members of the community are still very much underground. SINGAPORE You might assume that this modern, state of the art city would be open to gay travelers, but the courts have continuously rejected disbanding discriminatory laws. MALDIVES You will be quite disappointed to know that this stunning island vacation destination should be taken off any gay travel lists. There has been violence against gay people trying to enjoy a pleasant vacation in Maldives, and being gay is technically illegal.

country recently, being gay can still be punished with up to 5 years in prison. The nation is very intolerant towards gay travelers. DOMINICA You may be subject to psychiatric treatment and a stint in prison if you are convicted of being gay in this popular travel destination. If you are on a cruise and this is one of your port calls, you may want to consider staying on the boat. KENYA This exotic travel destination has a lot to offer by way of culture and adventure. Equality is not a priority in this country, and being gay is punishable with up to 21 years in prison. MOROCCO To this day, people in Morocco are being tried and convicted for being gay. You may face a fine and up to three years in prison. It is best to skip this destination as you are traveling. NIGERIA The death penalty for men, whipping and imprisonment for women, are just a few of the punishments gay people face in the African nation of Nigeria. As of 2013, it is even illegal to join gay clubs and organizations. PALAU Yet another island nation that is prettier on the outside than in. Palau has a national penal code that labels being gay as a. “abominable and detestable crime.”

TANZANIA Tanzania is one of Africa’s top tourist destinations but, if you are gay, you should be aware that this area is not safe. The overwhelming majority of locals consider being gay as taboo, which is probably why it is still a felony offense.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA All in the gay community should avoid this popular travel destination. Being gay is punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and the culture is generally discriminatory.

BARBADOS Though most gay travelers do not encounter issues here as long as they are conservative, laws from the British colonial era are some of the most severe in the western hemisphere.

SAMOA This country only labels being a gay man as “illegal.” Though there are many beautiful points of interests, gay tourists could face up to 7 years in prison.

BAHAMAS Most gay locals here are still very closeted because of the discriminatory attitude. Violent crimes, including murder, are not uncommon.

SAUDI ARABIA This nation has some pretty shocking punishments for those convicted of being gay. From 100 lashes to public stoning, they are some of the worst in the world. As you consider your next vacation, keep these antigay destinations in mind as places to avoid.

FIRE ISLAND, A FUN, GAY ROMP BY KEVIN QUINN

Pack your Speedos and get ready to board the Pines ferry because you are about to embark on a hilarious trip to Fire Island. Fire Island, written by comedian Joel Kim Booster and along with Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora, Torian Miller, Tomás Matos, and Margaret Cho.

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

According to the film’s official synopsis, Fire Island is “an unapologetic, modern-day rom-com inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The story centers around two best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long summer vacation with the help of cheap rosé and a cadre of eclectic friends.”

MAY 2022 21

MUST SEE The first preview shows the boys of Fire Island partying it up at Low Tea, drinking rooftop Prosecco, and looking for love among the sea of shirtless men. Will they find a summer romance? “I remember it was a real struggle to scrounge up the money to be able to afford to go those first years,” Booster told EW about when he first started vacationing out on Fire Island. “But once we got there, it was like a part of myself had been unlocked. I didn’t realize how much weight I was carrying around existing in largely heterosexual spaces.” Though the Pines and Cherry Grove communities of Fire Island have long been safe havens for gays and lesbians, only a few films — notably Longtime Companion, Parting Glances, The Normal Heart, and 2019’s Last Ferry — have actually filmed there. Of course, Booster’s Fire Island is not to be confused with Logo’s 2017 reality television series of the same name. “We made something really, really special and unique and gay,” Booster told Vanity Fair about bringing his dream project to life. “The fact that we did that feels miraculous, considering what we were up against.”

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Fire Island is directed by Andrew Ahn (Spa Night) and was filmed on location on the island last summer. It will now hit Hulu on June 3, just in time to kick off Pride Month.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER The audience roars. That’s music to a performer: the best you can ask from a group of people expecting to be entertained is approval for your efforts. Laughter, for a comedy. Gasps for a drama. Tears for a tragedy and tapping toes for a musical, that’s what you want. But remember as in “Hello, Molly,” the new memoir by Molly Shannon, not all of life’s a stage. For most of her life, Molly Shannon’s mother stood off to one side, a main character with a big role but few lines. She was killed in a car accident when Shannon was just four, as if she made a cameo appearance and then was off the script. But not entirely. With the help of family and friends, Shannon’s father, Jim, raised Shannon and her sister, Mary, to remember their mother and to seize life in every way possible, encouraging his girls to be bold and “wild.” Once, when Shannon was thirteen and her best friend was eleven years old, Shannon’s father planted the idea in her head to hop a plane. The girls ended up stowing away in plain sight on a flight from Cleveland (near their hometown) to New York City. He paid for their trip back home. And yet, being Jim Shannon’s daughter wasn’t all fun and games. He was an alcoholic, as was his father and his father-in-law; when he was sober, Shannon recalls parties, spontaneous trips, loving encouragement, and permission to skip school. When he was drunk, she says that she and her sister were always watchful for his mercurial moods and his propensity for a different kind of “wild” behavior. She couldn’t wait to leave home. And yet, through college, a fledgling career, and a popular spot-on Saturday Night Live, her father was always there, always a touchpoint for her past but also an irritation; enormously proud of her, but with a short wall between them. It wasn’t until she was well into her adulthood that Shannon realized he harbored a secret, and then everything made sense... You don’t expect a terrible, gasp-worthy accident to be the foundation for a funny story, but there it is, the opening number in “Hello, Molly.” Quickly-quickly, though, author Molly Shannon pulls readers in – somewhat awkwardly, at first, but in the same excited way that your fourth-grade BFF did when there was something important or interesting that you simply had to see. That, in fact, is the feel you’ll get in the first part of this book: like you’ve been taken by the hand and pulled toward something that was going to make this the best day ever.

As you read on, that’s not much hyperbole. If you like Shannon’s work, you’re going to adore this memoir, which appears a lot like her skits: hectic, heartfelt, hold-your-sides hilarious, honest, and always, always arms-wide charming. Bring your sense of humor here – but bring tissues, too. So, take a look, fellas. Here’s what you want in a book, fellas. “Hello, Molly!” is gonna make you roar. “Hello, Molly! A Memoir” by Molly Shannon c.2022, Ecco $27.99 304 pages

INDESIGN

THE PROCESS By Beau Stinnette, Principal Foley & Stinnette Interior Design

I thought after all of our time together, you might like to hear from wildly talented and uber creative design partner for a change. Here are some of his thoughts on a designer’s work… Behind the scenes of every finished beautiful home or room there has been many man hours in planning, tracking, overseeing, follow up and trouble shooting. As designers we are hand holders and task masters, we give a whole new meaning to the term multitasking, and all with a smile and a sense of pride and confidence. Professional Interior Designers are held to a higher standard and we must produce what we promise, seamlessly and on-time. I have been working with Dann Foley since 2002 and along the way I have learned a great deal from Dann, and also from the daily deal of working with clients, manufacturers, fabricators, contractors, shippers and warehouses. My role in our team has changed and grown over the years. When I began with Dann I was mostly “back of the house”; In more recent years I have worn the hats of the assistant, the bookkeeper and the designer. When I think about all of the details in each of those roles, I am stunned by the hidden intricacy that is involved and how we perform as trained professionals. We are in a sense the magician; we co-create and execute a plan for beautiful living and then we fade into the background. When we take on a new client or a new project there is the “meet and greet”. This meeting is crucial in meeting and soothing

expectations and since we do not charge for our initial consultation, we are ever aware that we only get one chance to “win the job”. This is our “audition” where we must be congenial and sensitive while we shine with knowledge and the ability to see a raw space with its potential, all in the first meeting. We must be able to give enough inspiration to be called back for the job. Most new clients are usually looking at multiple firms to hire. Once engaged we define the scope of work by the agreement. By this point we have had multiple conversations and we have discovered likes as well as what is to be avoided. We have been good listeners and we have taken notes. We may have created a client profile based on our meetings and conversations. We are serious about our performance and we create a simple agreement that outlines all of our discussions, your desires and lays out how we will work together. This includes information about the home, the design, the invoicing and even the right to photograph our finished work while always protecting our client’s personal information. Creating the Presentation and the Inventory is a serious job for us. We create the floor plan for the home or space along with elevations and renderings. This is how we also determine the proposed inventory for each room; everything is planned by scale from actual site measurements. “A finished room does not happen one piece at a time, we aren’t

building a puzzle.” – Dann Foley We are creating your space from a plethora of information that we have gathered, some by conversation and some by scale and none of it by whim. Included in this planning there have been multiple meetings with contractors who will be a part of the job. Gathering, curating, listing and reaching the point where we are ready to return and present the layout with the budget is a very timely process and requires great attention to beauty, function and detail. Good design doesn’t just happen, there is a science to getting it right. I have been through many presentations over the years and they often take multiple hours and require a great deal of energy and determination. We are not only selling but most often we are expanding on what a client thinks that they already know. We consider this to be an important and very interesting part of our job, we take your thoughts and often enlarge them with what had not been previously envisioned. We broaden the perspective, and this is what sets us apart. About now is when the money conversation gets real, but we are prepared, in the budget each individual item has its own line, nothing has been left out. By the end of the presentation, client’s heads are usually spinning with an overflow of information and we continue to review and edit until we are in complete agreement and ready to step into the work of setting schedules and writing purchase orders back at our offices.

have found it helpful to rotate our interactions with clients at times; good cop, bad cop. We soothe the sometimes-ruffled feathers and keep going!

Now work has begun, contractors are showing up, orders have been placed and the tedious job of tracking each contractor and each ordered item becomes a daily routine in our office, as well as site visits, weekly progress report meetings and budget reviews. This waiting experience will often challenge any client. They have been writing checks and building expectations, and anxiety runs high about now for most clients.

In the end we have given “birth”, we have co-created the final version of months and hours spent together. Installation day arrives and it is the culmination of many man hours and many unseen hands. The contracting details have all been finished; all of the home purchases have been received and are ready to be delivered in perfect condition. You have been asked to leave your house to us for anywhere from a day to a week while the pre-arranged white glove movers deliver to us all of the beautiful and purposely selected products that we have been shipping and carefully storing. Everything is then delivered and placed by us according to that plan that we all agreed on months ago. Then the call comes, “It’s time to come Home now!” By now we have poured the wine, plated the Hors d’oeuvres, lit the candles, music is playing, and we have changed out of our work clothes and slipped into some well-polished shoes. We are ready for your return and walkthrough. Clients often admit in the walkthrough that the end product looks even richer in person. We have performed a job well done and if there are any punch list items, we make a list and see to it quickly. Our next job is usually determined by how well we executed our last project.

“If you could do it yourself you would have, but you can’t so you hired us, now get out of the way.” – Dann Foley

“If one of our clients doesn’t cry during the reveal, then I have not done my job.” – Dann Foley

We as the professionals must retain control of the job while managing timelines and budgets and diverting possible drama. We

>> COACHELLA VALLEY REPERTORY ANNOUNCES HIRE OF EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Board of Directors of Coachella Valley Repertory has announced that Adam Karsten will become the company’s Executive Artistic Director. Karsten will succeed Ron Celona, CVRep’s Founding Artistic Director who created Coachella Valley Repertory 14 years ago. Celona announced his pending retirement this past December and CVRep quickly formed a multi-faceted committee charged with executing a nationwide search to identify only the best candidates. After reviewing dozens of applicants and conducting more than 30 hours of interviews, Karsten was selected and unanimously approved by CVRep’s Board of Directors to be its new Executive Artistic Director (EAD). Karsten will become only the second artistic director for CVRep and joins the company after many years of producing and directing with the Emmy Award winning performing arts series, Live From Lincoln Center and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) as well as serving as the Managing Artistic Director for Weathervane Playhouse in Columbus, Ohio. Over the last 20 years Karsten has also directed theatrical works Off-Broadway, regionally, with national touring productions and Broadway Workshop productions.

Commenting on Karsten’s appointment as the new EAD, Ron Celona, CVRep’s Founding Artistic Director, said, “After making the difficult decision to retire, it gives me great pleasure that I can confidently pass the baton to someone with the experience and expertise that Adam brings to CVRep’s future. With his leadership, I trust that CVRep is in good hands and will grow to become the nationally recognized regional theater that we are all proud to call our own.”

PERSPECTIVE

THE “UNBRIDLED” BRIDAL PARTY BY JILL LANGHAM

Over the last five years or so, the gay communities and meccas of the world have greatly changed and like everything else in our world, changed again as a result of COVID. I say this because I like you, have traveled to many of the well -known gay cities from San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Miami, Fire Island, Sitges, Lisbon, Berlin, Amsterdam and have been to gay parties and Prides in Mykonos, London, Tel Aviv, Cape Town, Prague and Barcelona, to name a few. I have sadly watched their de-construction. I have lived in Gay Palm Springs for the last 16 years where I not only know, love and respect the community at large but am blessed to be loved by so many as well. As a straight woman, who began frequenting gay clubs back in Buffalo and Atlanta in the 70’s, then again in Chicago in the 80’s, I am not a stranger to your ways. But living amongst you here in Palm Springs, attending 11 Atlantis cruises, working at World Gym as a trainer for the better part of 15 years and dancing at Toucans, Hunters, Wangs, Chill, Streetbar (yes, I do dance there) The Barracks, Roost and Trunks, I feel makes me a very well-informed person. Further, I am a trusted member of my tribe. I take my job and role very seriously and have become somewhat of a consigliere of sorts; a person who gay men trust their deepest secrets with. I will not reveal those secrets but at the same time have formed some very strong opinions about what I believe troubles many of you. I share these thoughts to stimulate conversation about our direction as a culture. I want to know your thoughts. I am focusing this article on the future of Gay Bars with the Advent of Bridal Parties AKA Hen Parties, taking over our sacred spaces. I listen to gay men talk about how much our Bars have changed. In the past, Gay bars were 99% exclusively filled with gay men (there have always been a handful of what used to be called “Fag Hags”). But today they are strewn with straight people, especially young girls ‘en masse,’ in what are known as Bridal parties here in America and Hen parties around the rest of the world. I’ve previously shared the story of my experience in your bars during my first White Party Weekend but want to re-cap it here. About an hour or so before Sunday’s T-dance, my ex, two gay friends and I thought we would get a drink before walking to the field across

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

the street. We walked in the front door of Hunters which was 100% full of gay men. As soon as the first gay man saw me, the room which had been full of a frenetic energy that reminded me of a Beehive, went completely silent. The men were all staring in my direction and sent me a message that was loud and clear. I was not wanted or welcome in what was “your” sacred space. I told my husband that I wanted to leave, and we quickly found our way to the back door where we exited. This was 2004 and I never again stepped foot in Hunters until 2012! So, that just proves to me that you as a group have a lot of power to change what you don’t like, or at least had power over a girl like me. I have always loved to dance, and gay clubs had an energy in them that I never found in hetero bars. I began thinking about what my attraction had been and I guess the simplest answer (outside of my being a gay man in another life) is the acceptance and safely that I felt from you outside of my first Palm Springs experience at Hunters! Granted, I have always known my place and like any good chameleon knew how to go along to get along. Normally that would make me very co-dependent and weak but, in this case, it earned me your trust which I will not lose or break. But it did get me thinking about the young women of today.

It is a well-known fact that women have been overlooked, underrecognized and excluded historically. I was definitely a woman of my times and as I said above, knew my place. I had no voice for the first 49 yeas of my life and actually believe that my thyroid gland suffered as a result of my muteness. The lack of vibration caused that gland to be under-active, the definition of hypothyroidism. But by the early 2000, I found my voice and then I found my home with you, here in Palm Springs. The young women of today will not put up with being ignored, unseen or unheard. Perhaps this is why they are always screaming. They are screaming to be heard and I get it. But rather than being seen and heard properly and with respect, they are instead turning people away. I don’t think they get it. And if you look at the role modeling that they are being exposed to whether it be the Kardashian Klan, or the most Un-Real Housewife “Stars”, it’s no wonder they act the way they do. Outside of a handful of women in power, whom I believe are true role models, I feel that the odds are stacked against them. The topic of entitled white men (and of course women, too) also comes to my mind. Straight bars have an energy of extreme competitiveness along with highly sexualized thoughts and actions. I guess you could say that gay bars share some of the same traits, but gay attention and needs will never be directed towards women of any persuasion. Now on a good day, I went to these straight clubs hoping to connect with a guy and had prepared myself for that possibility “just in case” I did! I think most women back then were in the same boat, but we couldn’t admit it, nor could we talk with one another about it, so it was a secret. Remember this was five decades ago, and even though we were supposedly in the midst of a sexual revolution, Flower Power and free Love, this 20-year-old was not safe within herself to handle much of what went on and had to act as if she were chaste. But what it really came down to was what my boyfriend(s) thought about my being at a straight club that made me look for other places to go dance. In other words, the insecurity of my boyfriends shaped when and where I could go have fun. Now granted, I had very low self-esteem; was the child of the Mad Men era, (who watched my father, and his friends denigrate their wives and women in general) so I was molded into wanting to please my man or men. Has much changed since then? Please stay tuned to find out more in Part Two in next Month’s Issue………………

EAT RIGHT

EASY WAYS TO LIMIT CARBS FOR A HEALTHIER YOU BY FRANCISCO LEEVES

With COVID numbers waning down a bit, you may be thinking about ways to work on your health and wellness. Now is an ideal opportunity to consider positive lifestyle changes, and what you choose to eat is a big part of that. The good news is, you can focus on nutritional goals while still enjoying the food you eat. “Think about important nutrients your body needs to stay healthy, like protein, healthy fat and fiber, when choosing what to eat,” says registered dietitian nutritionist Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S. “Focusing on foods with those nutrients, while reducing carbs, can help you stay on track toward your goals.”

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Here are Kirkpatrick’s tips to help you limit carbs. 1. Utilize net carbs to your advantage The great thing about tracking net carbs is that it helps you get the most bang for your nutritional buck, as an essential component of a net carb calculation is to deduct fiber. In the low carb world, fiber is found in nuts, seeds, and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli or cauliflower). Fiber is not digestible, which is why you deduct it from the total carbs. Adding more of these foods into your daily routine means you’re getting fewer digestible carbs and more healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2. Add indulgences to stay on track It’s much easier to stick with healthier lifestyle changes if you include foods you truly enjoy that also provide nutritional content. “I advise my patients to indulge but indulge smart,” adds Kirkpatrick.

dip low carb chips into a healthy fat source like guacamole. These options give you way more nutrient density than the potato chips or pretzels you might be tempted to grab. They also help you feel fuller, longer. Here are other lower carb dip ingredients to try:

3. Understand how soon you’ll see benefits “When you limit carbs, the results can be seen fairly quickly,” says Kirkpatrick. “That’s because the process of limiting carbs (at least in the beginning) leads to a reduction in water weight. Before the real weight starts coming off, you can start seeing the benefits. Sometimes, just feeling lighter will keep you motivated to continue in the beginning.” Additionally, limiting carbs means reducing processed foods and sugar 4. Swap dips and sides Most dips and sides can be made low carb and reinforce your healthy habits. For example, you can make spinach-and-artichoke dip (a source of antioxidants) with almond flour (or no flour at all), snack on an apple with no-added-sugar peanut or almond butter, or

* Mayonnaise. This versatile condiment has zero carbohydrates. You can create plenty of dips combining mayo with mustard and/ or sour cream. * Mustard. Add zing to your dips with mustard, as it contains zero net carbs. Some mustards will have added sugar or honey, so be sure to check labels. * Sour cream. While you may think full-fat sour cream is not the best choice, it actually contains fewer carbs than the low-fat version - and a lot fewer carbs than non-fat sour cream. Meeting your health and wellness goals will be easier if you center your goals on nutrition as well as enjoyment of foods you eat that also help give you what your body needs.

EXCLUSIVE

GOGO FOR THE GOLD BY TOM TIETJEN Everyone’s favorite Hey Qween host Jonny McGovern and his bestie, GoGo veteran and Only Fans top earner Greg McKeon are on the hunt for America’s next champion GoGo superstar star in OUTtv’s hilarious new competition series, GOGO FOR THE GOLD. “The queer community has spent the last decade celebrating the queens on Drag Race, but the other stars of the gay club are the GoGo boys,” says McGovern. “They, too, serve the looks with tons of personality and style and they never hold back on the drama. We’re crowning America’s #1 champion GoGo superstar star … and the competition will be fierce!” GoGo For The Gold co-creators McGovern and McKeon have assembled a diverse cast of GoGos that encompass a wide range of body types from traditional masculine hunks to thick ‘n juicy bears, smooth twinks and even femme dancers who serve it up in heels. One of the contestants is a trans man. All are competing for a $10k cash prize. To win, they must undergo a series of challenges that comprise the many facets of being a champion GoGo. Being a skillful dancer is pivotal, of course, but GoGo boys are also influencers, fashion models, and nightlife representatives. As contestants on GOGO FOR THE GOLD, their journey will be packed with humor, dramatic twists, and tongue-in-

cheek fun. There may even be some tears shed along the way. Judging the boys will be the “GoGo Gods,” headed by supreme GoGo veteran Greg McKeon. Each judge scores based on four important criteria: Fantasy, Body, Dance, and Individuality. One or more GoGos are eliminated each week until the final strip down when GOGO FOR THE GOLD crowns its STUD — super talented underwear dancer — and officially proclaims him as ‘America’s #1 Champion GoGo Superstar Star’. “I started GoGo dancing while I was a student at UC Berkeley,” says Greg McKeon. “I was really shy at the time and when I first stepped up on top of the bar, my heart was racing. But I relished in the attention! That first night, I made over $500, and I never looked back.” McKeon credits GoGo-ing with launching his career in Hollywood. He has landed multiple roles in movies (including Eating Out) and TV shows (Nip / Tuck and Teen Wolf). He was the resident lap dancer on Jonny McGovern’s popular OUTtv talk show, Hey Qween. “Greg and I first met on the set of my ‘Sexy Nerd’ music video,” Jonny McGovern explains. “We started our partnership by throwing some of the hottest parties in LA.”

“The parties we threw all centered around the GoGo boy,” McKeon jumps in. “We would develop the guys, teaching them the ins and outs of being successful on the box and working with them individually to elevate their art.” They aim to do the same on GoGo For The Gold, but this time in front of millions of fans cheering the GoGos on at home. “There’s never been a reality competition show that showcases the talent, ingenuity and sexiness of the GoGo boy,” McKeon reflects. “This will be the first time that GoGo boys will be given the spotlight they have long deserved.” Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern’s career in nightlife entertainment began twenty years ago with Dirty Gay Hits, his collection of hilarious gay themed songs that received over three million downloads and was added to rotation on MTV. It led to McGovern appearing all over the airwaves, on The Ricki Lake Show, VH1’s Best Week Ever, Comedy Central’s Out on the Edge, and eventually catching the eye of Rosie O’Donnell, who cast him as a lead player on her LOGO-TV comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show. Today, Jonny is best known for his popular Netflix shows Hey Qween and Look at Huh. Most recently, he became a TikTok sensation with “Man Areas,” a song from his Gayest of All Time album. The song has appeared in TikTok videos viewed over 12.5 million times and has received over 7 million streams on Spotify. Jonny is currently touring the UK with burlesque legend Dita Von Teese and has been performing “Man Areas” nightly to standing ovations.

Greg McKeon is currently working on his book, “GoGo for Love,” chronicling his ten years as GoGo dancer. He is one of the top earners on OnlyFans and he and his husband recently purchased a Christmas tree farm in Portland, Oregon. “It’s a wild dream for a city boy like me to be living in the middle of nature, but thanks to Onlyfans, anything is possible,” McKeon says. He and his husband often invite other top models from all over the world to the farm to film new OnlyFans content with them. “I am so grateful to my fans for making this possible.” “Success is not an overnight thing,” McKeon attests. “I have acted in web series and indie movies, performed at big party festivals and small dive bars and everything in between. Just like GoGo-ing on the box, an adventurous life is unpredictable and a constant hustle.” Jonny McGovern agrees. “A career in the spotlight is about moving forward, shaking what your mama gave ya and always finding new, innovative ways to shine.” For more information on GoGo For The Gold, visit OUTtv.com. THIRTY YEARS OF PEACE BISQUIT! BY JOHN STEIN

BILL COLEMAN W/ ULTRA NATÉ / FIRE ISLAND 2017

BILL COLEMAN W/ DEEE-LITE AS FEATURED IN OUTWEEK MAGAZINE COVER STORY / 1990

The music label behind Ultra Naté, Deee-lite, Cazwell and Amanda Lepore celebrates three decades of dance music. For thirty years, Peace Bisquit has been a music-industry force to be reckoned with. Founded in 1990 as a management, production and A&R agency, the company’s very first clients were Deee-lite (“Groove Is In The Heart”) and Ultra Naté (“Free”, “If You Could Read My Mind”). Since then, Peace Bisquit and its ubiquitous founder, Bill Coleman, has worked with the likes of Jody Watley, Crystal Waters, Neneh Cherry, and a dizzying array of pop artists including Beyoncé, Lizzo, Lenny Kravitz, Sia, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera.

Bill Coleman was always attracted to music. During college, he interned at Island Records during the imprint’s most influential era, promoting new rock star Melissa Etheridge, Tom Waits, U2, Propaganda and Grace Jones’ hit album Slave to the Rhythm. He then landed a position as Singles Reviewer and Dance Music Editor for Billboard Magazine where he quickly became one of the industry’s most respected voices. Columbia Records, Arista Records, Epic Records, Maxi Records and EightBall Records commissioned him to write the liner notes for a number of their dance compilation albums as well as pop artists Thompson Twins and 80’s girl group, Exposé. “I was in my dream job at Billboard when I discovered Deee-lite,” says Bill Coleman. “After releasing our first single, “What Is Love?”, it was clear that the cool, dance project was going to take off bigger than we imagined. Long story short, once the “Groove Is In The Heart” 12” and video came out, I had to make a decision pretty quickly as to whether I was going to stay with Billboard or accompany the band on

Peace Bisquit has made its mark in Hollywood, too, providing music supervision and soundtracks for films including 1995’s cult favorite Party Girl starring Parker Posey, Party Monster, and the Another Gay Movie films. The company also collaborated with Academy Award winning producer Brian Grazer on the documentary, Inside Deep Throat.

this new, exciting journey we’d all worked so hard on.” “I took a leap of faith, left my high-profile gig, signed Deeelite and Ultra Naté at the same time and opened Peace Bisquit, truly believing (sometimes naively) that I could make a difference in our dance, queer, black, underground and NYC culture,” Coleman continues. “Peace Bisquit has allowed me to combine my love of multiple music genres, DJ-ing, critical expertise and inspirations into an independent adventure that helps artists, and myself, express creatively with no limits.” Peace Bisquit’s triumphs over the past three decades have been legion. Among Coleman’s favorites are serving as an A&R consultant for Bette Midler and her 2000 album, “Bette”; traveling the world with Jody Watley as her tour DJ; co-producing and DJ-ing Lady Gaga’s first ‘Fame Ball’ and the many plaques the company has received. Bill Coleman and Peace Bisquit have received honors for their works with De la Soul, Sinead O’Connor, David Guetta, The B-52’s, Technotronic, Madonna and Beyoncé.

Coleman also counts his collaborations with some of the most influential DJ/remixers of our day, including Clivilles & Cole, The Basement Boys, NERVO, Tiesto, Morgan Page, David Morales, Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, Tony Moran, Frankie Knuckles and WAWA, among his biggest accomplishments. His collaboration with David Guetta on “Love Is Gone”, “Just A Little More Love” and “Getting’ Over You” continue to play on dance floors across the globe and introduced vocal powerhouse Chris Willis to the world. Bill Coleman is not done yet. He continues to DJ and can be heard LIVE every Friday night, from 7-10pm PT on Andy Cohen’s Kiki Lounge on Sirius XM (Channel 312). He also spins an eclectic, genrefluid one hour set every month on Sirius XM “The Morning Chill”. Visit: http://www.peacebisquit.com

FIRE ISLAND PINES IS HEATING UP THIS SUMMER! BY MATTHEW BLANCO

After two years of pandemic restrictions and delays, Fire Island Pines is gearing for its return to a fully active summer. Its boutique hotel is already taking reservations. The Pines Gym has been upgraded and the island’s world-famous nightclub, The Pavilion, will be opening soon. “We are working full speed to make sure this is an amazing season on the Pines,” says PJ McAteer, Managing Partner of the Pines. He wants everyone to feel secure and free from danger when visiting Fire Island Pines — noting that Fire Island Pines built its reputation as being a completely safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community. Fire Island Pines first became a destination for gay men in 1952, when it was illegal for two men to dance together in public and when

many in the world viewed gay men as sexual deviants. With its lush foliage, white sandy beaches (850,000 cubic yards of additional sand was recently added), beautiful modern architecture, and miles of wood plank boardwalks, the island served as a refuge for young men to take each other’s hands and help each other explore their natural inclinations. It also attracted celebrities from Liza Minelli to Luciano Pavarotti. Calvin Klein, David Geffen, Perry Ellis, and the director Michael Bennett even purchased homes on the island. “The Pines continues to be a unique, magical place like no other on the planet,” says Kenny Sullivan, the Resort Director. A trip from NYC is less than two-hours on the Long Island Railroad. From the Sayville train stop, travelers board busses to the

Fire Island Pines ferry. There is a nearby airport, too. MacArthur is ten minutes away, allowing guests from around the world to enjoy The Pines’ many attractions. The Pines regularly hosts parties with world class DJ’s and celebrity performers. They will release their full event line-up in the next few weeks. In the meantime, those planning trips to Fire Island Pines this

summer should book accommodations immediately. Most houses on the island have already been rented for the season, but “finding a house is not impossible,” says PJ McAteer, “openings do pop up!” He advises checking with the realtors on the island for last minute cancellations. A limited number of accommodations are also still available in the island’s boutique hotel. For more information, visit https://pinesfi.com.
