WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE? 2022 FOOD TRENDS BY CHRIS ASTRALA

Remember when kale was the new lettuce, quinoa the new rice and cauliflower the new mashed potato? We are constantly looking for that latest thing to tickle our taste buds and savor the next new thing to please our culinary whims. We’ve run down the most anticipated Food Trends for 2022 that will stand to shape how, why, and what we will be eating this year and perhaps beyond.

POTATO MILK Could potato milk be the next big thing to disrupt the vegan milk alternatives sector? With alternative-milks like oat milk and almond milk continuing to penetrate the diary market, there is good reason to believe the hype that plant-based milk will continue to grow in popularity.

GLOBALLY INSPIRED HOT FLAVORS Spicy flavors are getting even hotter in 2022. A spicy flavor profile with notes of sweetness is expected to become even more popular. Especially spicy and sweet heat inspired by global cuisines like Korean gochujang, Mexican tajin, Japanese furikake, or Indonesian sambal. All these hot sauces will be trending even more next year.

ULTRA-URBAN FARMING AND INDOOR GARDENING Urban farming has nowhere to go but up. It has gone from hydroponics and aquaponics to mushrooms grown above grocery aisles. With constant advances in technology and focus on sustainability and the environment, this trend is here to stay. Even more so, we absolutely should join this sustainability and locality movement and contribute to it as individuals. Did you know that it is very easy for perennial herbs to grow indoors? Even if you can’t cultivate a small garden, you can always investigate indoor gardening and have fresh herbs ready for your cooking!

CBD The CBD market has seen an explosion of interest in recent years, thanks to the growing demand for healthy foods and CBD’s claimed benefits for mental health and wellness. Increasingly, however, CBD products are moving away from the health food shops and into drinks and food products, so it is certainly an area worth exploring for fine food retailers.

THE REDUCETARIAN MOVEMENT: MODERATION AND ACCEPTANCE There are so many trendy dietary restrictions based on personal convictions these days... A lot of those are rather exclusive and extreme. We believe that the future is all about moderation and acceptance. You might have heard about flexitarians - a combination of the words “flexible” and “vegetarian.” It’s a cross between going full vegan or vegetarian with the ability to enjoy meat and dairy every so often. Believe it or not, most of us are already unconsciously members of this movement for different reasons, be it environmental awareness or being committed to improving one’s health. So, what does being a reducetarian mean, and how do you become a “reducetarian”? Suppose you aren’t ready to go completely vegetarian or vegan but still want to reduce your animal products consumption to help the planet or improve your health. In that case, the reducetarian movement is for you. Many reducetarians also prioritize eating high-quality grassfed meat and pasture-raised eggs when they choose to have animal products. The Reducetarian movement’s goal is to improve human health, protect the environment, and spare farm animals from cruelty by reducing societal consumption of animal products. Want to try the trend?

MORINGA The new superfood moringa is also known as drumstick tree, horseradish tree, or “miracle leaf,” and it’s all the rage right now. Moringa leaves are incredibly nutritious and have seven times more vitamin C than oranges and fifteen times more potassium than bananas. Even the World Health Organization hails this healthy green leaf for its ability to fight malnutrition. Moringa is now emerging as a powder (same as matcha once did) you can add to healthy smoothies, sauces, or desserts. It can be found as a health supplement, and you will be seeing moringa in many grocery products like grain blends, protein bars, chocolate, and frozen desserts.

COVER FUNCTIONAL SPARKLING FIZZ Functional foods have been trending for a few years by now. Sparkling beverages are already doing double duty because of the ever-so-popular healthy lifestyle craze. Kombucha is no longer the only healthy bubbly drink. Get ready to see more probiotic sodas, prebiotic tonic waters, and other sparkling functional beverages appearing in 2022 as one of the major food trends.

TURMERIC Turmeric is more than just an ingredient in curry. It has long been known as a dietary supplement with anti-inflammatory and immuneboosting properties. No surprise that this famed golden spice with additional benefits is becoming even more popular in the coming year. Turmeric, also known as Curcuma or saffron, is becoming a common ingredient in cereal and granola, salads, sauerkraut, bread, and even ice cream. Turmeric has a very distinct earthy taste, with mild notes of ginger and peppery spice. Mix it with cumin, ginger, cinnamon, paprika, or coriander and add more flavor to stews, soups, rice, or even smoothies, homemade functional fizz, and coffee. HIBISCUS Hibiscus has been long known by tea consumers, famous for its high Vitamin C content. It’s a beautiful flower grown on almost every continent. There are over 200 varieties of hibiscus, and it is also commonly known as roselle, Jamaican sorrel, or Florida cranberry. Get ready to find hibiscus-flavored functional sodas, fruit spreads, yogurts, and more. The pleasant mild tartness with notes of florals and fruits mixes well with ground spices like cloves, cardamom, anise, ginger, and cinnamon. You can easily incorporate hibiscus into many sweet treats, like this Strawberry Hibiscus Syrup or this Hibiscus Ginger Morning Smoothie.

YUZU FRUIT Yuzu is a citrus fruit mainly cultivated in Japan, Korea, and China. Yuzu fruit can’t be enjoyed as is because of its potent flavor. It is very sour and tart and amazingly fragrant. Currently, yuzu fruit is taking the culinary world by storm. Yuzu’s zest and juice are great flavoring agents used in vinaigrettes, mayo, hard seltzer, and more. Many chefs incorporate it into cakes, soups, noodles, vegetable, and fish dishes. The yuzu fruit is bound to be a star of 2022 fruit grocery aisles.

CHILDHOOD FAVORITES Nostalgia and retro flavor follow us into 2022. This is a countertrend to the health-focused and experience-driven trends dominating our list. We all have a strong connection between flavors, smells, and good memories. Old-fashioned dishes remind us of a comfortable and carefree time. This food fad is here to stay for years to come. It is about simplicity and full flavors instead of complicated diets and the newest superfoods. Nostalgic throwback recipes like Classic Macaroni and Cheese, Apple Cinnamon Pop-Tarts, Homemade Sloppy Joes, and Nutella Chocolate will continue trending in the future.

TROPICAL GETAWAY We are looking to escape from the stressful realities by adding more tropical flavors into our foods. Most culinary experts agree that tropical fruit flavors and islands cuisines will rise in popularity next year. Think the Caribbean guava, tropical mango, coconut curry, and more culinary escapes to the tropics.

NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES We aren’t just talking about an uninspired mocktail (we are looking at your vodka soda, minus the vodka), but delicious drinks that were fully designed to have no ABV. Loads of people are abstaining from alcohol permanently or just trying it on for weekdays, and 2022 is the year for them. People are spending less time drinking and more time searching for an alternative.

SMALLER MENUS Because of supply chain issues and just general pandemic madness, we’ve seen restaurants really pare down their menus, and we think the trend this is here to stay for a while longer. Honestly, we love when a restaurant’s menu has fewer options that are done well. Give me less choices, and better food!

JULY 2022 9

COVER MORE ROBOTS SERVERS 2021 brought the dawn of robot servers, bus bots, delivery drivers, and butchers, but we think soon enough, robots could be cooking your eggs and waffles at the hotel breakfast bar. Robots bring automation to the dining experience, which could result in a faster and more consistent product... so it’s not all spooky and sci-fi!

MUSHROOMS As noted with the plant-based trend, more people are looking for healthy meat replacements that taste delicious. Long-standing vegetarians and vegans have this to say: Have you considered mushrooms? The hearty texture and absorbent quality of mushrooms imitate that meatiness we sometimes crave so much. In 2022, we expect to see an uptick in recipes that call on mushrooms to replace meats.

NORMALIZING PLANT-BASED MENU OPTIONS While exclusively vegan and vegetarian restaurants and online resources solely dedicated to vegan and vegetarian recipes and lifestyles are not new, we believe that 2022 will take normalizing plant-based meals to the next level. We’ve already seen Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat infiltrate the menus of fast-food chains. Recently, some brands have made serious strides in creating seafood made of plants, too. We even saw Gordon Ramsey make vegan bacon on TikTok. 2022 should bring even more plant-based “meat” and “seafood” products to life (so to speak), making a vegetarian diet ever more attainable and exciting. Adding a new lineup of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options offering food that works for everyone will become a common practice.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS BY CHRIS ASTRALA

Food is more than just sustenance. Every dish tells a story about different cultures, histories, and identities, and there’s nothing more exciting (and delicious) than trying new flavors from around the world. We’ve put together a short list of dishes, just to whet your appetite. If you happen to visit any of these countries or if there happens to be a particular restaurant dedicated to these types of dishes in your neighborhood, have a taste, you won’t regret it. Bon Appetite!

SPAIN: PAELLA The national dish of Spain probably doesn’t surprise you, as paella is renowned across the U.S. and the world. Spain’s answer to a one-pot rice dish is cooked in a large, shallow pan that gives it its name. A recipe from Valencia, the dish traditionally used meat such as rabbit and chicken but has since morphed to include seafood versions as well. CHINA: JIANBING You can find this dish at many street food stalls in Beijing. It’s a very thin crepe with your choice of delicious fillings. It’s folded into a pocket shape that you can hold and eat as you walk, so it’s great for a meal on the go.

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

POLAND: ZAPIEKANKA This popular street food is basically a toasted, open-faced sandwich that’s made on baguette bread. It’s usually topped with mushrooms, cheese, ketchup, and green onions, but there are many ways to make it. ENGLAND: BANGERS AND MASH Meat dishes are especially popular across England, along with fish and chips (fried fish with French fries), but one pub favorite, as well is bangers and mash. This simple dish features sausage (the banger) and mashed potatoes (the mash). It is often accompanied by fried onions in gravy and a side of peas. ARGENTINA: EMPANADAS These Argentinian specialties are filled with ground beef, caramelized onions, green olives, hard-boiled eggs, and raisins, and seasoned with cumin. PORTUGAL: BACALHAU A GOMES DE SA Salted cod is the star of Portugal’s delicious national dish. Once the cod is dried and salted to make bacalhau a gomes de sa, it is seasoned and sautéed with potatoes and onions before being served with sliced hard-boiled eggs and black olives.

PHILIPPINES: PANCIT, LUMPIA, AND ADOBO There are so many great Filipino dishes, but some must-tries are pancit (stir-fried noodles with vegetables and meat or seafood); lumpia (deep-fried spring rolls filled with ground pork and minced vegetables); and adobo (pork or chicken marinated and simmered in soy sauce and garlic) FRANCE: POT-AU-FEU Of all the foods you can imagine being the national food, from croissants to baguettes to chicken cordon bleu to coq au vin, it is pot-au-feu that French people most enjoy. Pretty much every French person will tell you their family makes it best. PAKISTAN: NIHARI Nihari, a shank meat stew with lamb, mutton, goat, chicken, or beef, cooked with masala, ginger, fennel and onions. It’s a hot dish mostly made with beef, and a must-try when visiting this Asian nation. BRAZIL: FEIJOADA In Brazil, the national dish is feijoada, a black bean and meat stew delicacy that delivers the goods. Most times, the meat is beef tongue or pigs’ ear, tail, or feet, but sometimes fish is the main ingredient. JAPAN: SUSHI This healthy and delicious dish was created in the mid-1800s. Using vinegared rice wrapped in thin sheets of seaweed, cucumber,

shiso or soy paper leaves, sushi isn’t always a fish dish; it’s anything rolled with the rice, from veggies to meats as well as fish. EGYPT: KOSHARI This classic street food can be found everywhere in Egypt. The mixture of rice, pasta and beans known as koshari gets topped with a spicy, yet sweet, creamy tomato sauce. The dish originated in India as khichri and was brought to Egypt with the British. GERMANY: SAUERBRATEN It’s not a sausage that is the national dish of Germany but another comfort food: sauerbraten. This pot roast, most often made with beef, is marinated and slow-cooked until tender, then served in its own sweet-and-sour gravy of ingredients. ITALY: BOLOGNESE Of all the pasta dishes that are eaten in Italy, bolognese is one of the most popular. Forget pasta with meatballs; this flat tagliatelle pasta topped with a meaty ragu practically guarantees meat in every bite. SOUTH KOREA: KIMCHI You’ll find kimchi in every Korean restaurant. Just as potatoes are a popular side dish in the U.S., Koreans enjoy this fermented cabbage and radish dish. Salted and seasoned with spring onions, ginger, garlic, and Korean chili pepper (gochugaru), with salted seafood (jeotgal) mixed in.

JULY 2022 13

COVER

CUBA: ROPA VIEJA The literal name of Cuba’s national dish translates into “old clothes,” but don’t let that put you off. A dish that originated in Spain, ropa vieja uses flank steak in a peppery tomato sauce to create a rich and spicy meal. Additional ingredients include black beans and white wine, all slow-cooked and simmered so the meat becomes so tender it can be pulled or shredded.

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

IRELAND: BOXTY The Irish are known for potatoes, so leave it to them to have several recipes made with the root vegetable. Boxty, for example, are potato pancakes. Mashed potatoes are mixed with milk, butter, and flour to create fluffy cakes topped with sour cream. Trust us: You won’t be able to stop eating them.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Sometimes, the smallest things make you hot under the collar. It doesn’t take much: an idiot on the road, a disrespectful eyeroll, something muttered under someone’s breath and that’s it, you’re torched. Sometimes, conversely, the smallest things can change your bad mood. In “Burn the Page” by Danica Roem, it was an email. It seemed like Danica Roems was always crying. To be fair, she had good reason: she was working two jobs and they weren’t enough to pay the bills. Her car was a piece of junk, it was 2016, and her states’ Republican delegates had just filed several anti-LGBTQ bills. For a trans woman like Roem, tears were perfectly appropriate until someone emailed her, asking why she didn’t run for office herself. Why not? So, in preparation, Roem hired a team to do “opposition research” to suss out any past behavior that her homophobic opponent might try to use against her. Born in the fall of 1984, Roem was three years old when her father committed suicide in their back yard; soon after, her mother’s parents needed care and moved into the Roem household. This, Roem admits, was stressful all around. Even in fifth grade, Roem knew that she wasn’t a “cis-het straight kid” but since she had no “positive representation of LGBTQ people,” she stayed closeted. By 13, though, she knew she was trans but didn’t want anybody to know; to help hide it, she participated in sports; fell in love with baseball and heavy metal music; and admired girls, albeit in ways different than did her male peers. Eventually, she made a community for herself. But when she began to think about maybe having a relationship, Roem soon realized that she had some work to do. She couldn’t expect someone to see her for herself until she did it first. “I had to commit to being who I was...” she said. “It was time to transition.” If you ever need proof of the concept that little things make big differences, you’ll want “Burn the Page.” Same goes if you want to read a memoir that bounces with energy. Indeed, this book is a bit like taking a small kid into a toy store: they run amok, touching, and examining everything. That’s not unappealing; author Danica Roem careens about, but she always lands on the heart of this book – being honest, open, and authentic – which is likewise what she encourages readers to do. Her passion for this is contagious, and she sweeps readers along with her enthusiasm on other aspects of her life, whether it’s heavy metal music, travel, or politics. Be aware that, because of her excitement over her career and her heavy coverage of it, the latter might slam shut the eyelids of readers who are not politically minded.

On that, this book is like no other political memoir, ever. It’s fun, wildly entertaining, and it aims to mean more than just one woman’s story. For readers who want a good activist tale with a smile, “Burn the Page” is on fire. “Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts, Blacing Trails, and Igniting Change” by Danica Roem c.2022, Viking $27.00 320 pages

SUMMERTIME AND THE EAT’N IS EASY DELICIOUS BY CHEF ANDRE CARTHEN

As the weather gets warmer, the need for our bodies to lighten themselves becomes stronger. Usually, it’s just from the winter months of heavy foods and hibernation, most recently, it’s more from the onset of COVID. Like many of us, I too became a victim of less activity, isolation and added COVID pounds. Do not fret, what was gained can be lost simply by allowing the body to take the lead and making healthier, lighter, smaller, food choices. I will admit that working with CEO, Designer, and friend Kathy Ireland, the amazing, absolutely stunning Janet Jackson, and the beautiful, brilliantly talented Vanessa Williams, does fuel my desire to be in tip-top shape (mentally and physically). I know first-hand how extremely busy these women are, and I know what it takes to maintain their schedules and look so good. Believing that my knowledge dance, fitness, pared with my culinary skills are the main reasons why Janet chose me as her Culinary Consultant to develop the recipes and meal plans for her New York Times #1 Best Seller

‘True You’. The introduction from Kathy didn’t hurt either, (Thanks Kathy). Besides, I can’t be the fit chef if I can’t fit into my own clothes, now can I. So, it’s small plates for me. Luckily, I’ve always been an appetizer, small plates, or aka Tapas kind of guy. Tapas? A tapa is an appetizer, snack, or small plate in Spanish cuisine. Like our appetizers, tapas can be served hot or cold, unlike our choice for the Blooming Onion, or B.B.Q. hotn-spicy chicken wings, today’s tapas have evolved into a much more sophisticated cuisine. Now you’re thinking, I wonder where in Palm Springs I can find the best tapas? There are many places that serve small plates in Palm Springs, remember we call them appetizers. To my knowledge El Jefe Desert Cantina at the Saguaro Hotel is the only place that calls them Tapas. However, there are several places with fantastic small plates for you to try.

1 baguette to serve optional Peel and thinly slice 8 cloves of garlic, pat down 16 raw jumbo shrimp (peeled & deveined) with paper towels. Season the shrimp with sea salt & black pepper, reserve 4 small, dried cayenne peppers and measure out 1/3 cup white wine Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat Add a 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil, after 2 minutes season the olive oil with sea salt and add in the sliced garlic & cayenne peppers, mix with the olive oil, after 2 minutes and the garlics are developing a light golden fried color, add the shrimp into the pan, making sure they’re in a single layer After 1 ½ to 2 minutes flip the shrimp to cook the other side, then add in the 1/3 cup of white wine and raise the heat to a medium-high heat. After a total cooking time of about 4 minutes on the shrimp (2 minutes per side), they should be perfectly cooked, remove the pan from the heat, transfer everything into a serving dish. Sprinkle with fresh lemon juice and freshly chopped parsley, serve next to a crusty baguette to mop up all the sauce… Enjoy!

INDESIGN

GRAY NO MORE; THE EVOLUTION OF THE NEUTRAL. BY DANN FOLEY

For the last 20 years we have been fascinated by every shade and color of gray in the spectrum. It continues to be very popular but, like all good things, it is time for a change. As a designer we encourage our clients to be deliberate in their choices. To make decisions based on their lives and their personalities. For me, Gray just never seemed to say much about a person. Even the name is suggestive of something that is easily overlooked. Before I make every one nervous, I am not suggesting you need to get rid of all your gray, I am asking you to take a good hard look at your home and ask yourself if the lack of color might be indicative of something lacking in your personal style. It just might be the perfect time to consider those gray sofas, chairs and walls as merely a base to showcase your own style and your personality. Just as beige was to us in the 90’s, let gray be the starting point to your home’s design, not the final thought. I am and always have been an advocate for the use of color. It is the easiest and most cost-effective way of adding personal style and making a statement to any room. You can choose to be subtle in your selections, or as bold as you feel. There is little commitment to

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

a coat of paint. It can change with the seasons or your moods, and it change your room and perspective completely. So, here is the interesting thing about neutrals, like everything else they evolve change, and various colors fall in and out of favor. As your design guru here at The Standard Magazine, my job is to inspire you and keep you abreast of all the options and changes coming your way. The gray you couldn’t get enough of in the 2000s, has morphed into warm shades of camel and earth tones. It just so happens that they can, with care, be blended with your grays to make a whole new neutral palette to consider. A perfect example of this shift is that big retail company with the catalog we all get in our mailboxes. RH was probably the biggest proponent of gray style in the last 20 years. They are known for their neutral interiors and their subtle use of what I call, “non-color”. Their latest catalog is full over very shade of camel, earth and brown imaginable. So, you see what we in the “high-end” side of the design trade have known for a while now, is going mainstream in a big way. Brown is back, baby! I promise I am not being flippant. I want you to use your design dollars wisely. I am not one for trends or themes in the home. This shift to warm neutrals is a real change and it is here to stay.

www.rh.com is where you will find a world of camel tones and warm finishes. See for yourself the first major shift in neutrals in 2 decades. There are pages of inspiration to consider for your home. www.sherwin-williams.com is the perfect place to help you explore color trends and try them out in virtual rooms. Their color of the year for 2022 is called, Evergreen Fog (SW9130), it is a perfect complement to your existing grays because the shade of green has a good bit of gray at its heart. It also happens to be a perfect “bridge” color between gray and warmer tones. Try Dried Edamame (SW9122) as a beautiful compliment that brings warmth and sophistication to your neutral palette. This color shift also means that the iconic white is also becoming warmer. The cool white of yesterday is giving way to warmer shades of off-white in tones like, linen, milk and parchment. It is important not to go too yellow. I suggest trying Sherwin Williams, White Snow (SW9541). The shade of white is warm without being too cool (more-blue), or too yellow. Going forward, I suggest considering the amount of gray in any

neutral and remember that warmer is better. Even when considering gray, shades of mushroom (gray with taupe) are a fresh choice. A great example is Sherwin Williams, Mushroom (SW9587), or Dorian Gray (SW7017). Keeping you up to date and considering every option is my joy. Sharing what is new and fresh is a favorite part of my job. In the end, I want you to choose what makes you happy. To find that sweet spot, you need to explore all the possibilities to assure your choices are the best for you and your home. That voice inside your head is an honest one. Follow your instincts, not trends and you cannot go wrong. Remember, this is not brain surgery, it’s decorating and you feel your way around and choose those things that make you feel happy.

OBITUARY

JOHNNY HEDGES

Johnny Hedges passed away at his home in Palm Springs on the afternoon of June 26th, 2022. He spent his final day hanging out with his husband of 52 years, Gerry McBride, and their long time Sunday-fun-day friends. In 1972, John and Gerry moved from Cleveland, Ohio to San Francisco, where they lived decades of the super social life their mid-west hearts always dreamed of. Johnny was a partner in Megatone records, teaming up with nationally acclaimed gender-pioneer and disco-Icon, Sylvester, producing multiple hits including “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real.)” In 2019, “You Make Me Feel” was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry in the category of songs that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Billboard Magazine named Johnny Disco among the nation’s top Disco DJs when he was blowing up the dance floors at all the biggest clubs in San Francisco. Having spent virtually zero days apart, in their half-a-century together, the couple made the move to Palm Springs in 2009. So many of their friends made the same southern migration, that the social group of their youth, was almost entirely reconstituted, trading fog for sunshine and pool parties. It was another great fit for them.

A celebration of life is scheduled for July 24th, at 2pm at Weifels Mortuary at 690 Vella Rd. in Palm Springs. Join us to share love, laughter, music, and toast to the passion that Johnny shared so prolifically.

EXPLORING THEIR SEXUALITY THROUGH ART BY BREANNA SUDEN

Pride Month is celebrated each year to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. As we all come together this month to celebrate those in love and friendship and how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, these three artists are sharing how their sexuality has influenced and shaped their trajectories in the art world.

DARREN JONES Being an openly gay male has influenced the work of Darren Jones greatly. Prior to coming out in his late 20’s, many early years were spent in the corporate world fighting the urge to be creative in fear of being outed or labeled. As an abstract landscape artist, Darren paints with his hands applying the acrylics and textures directly on to the panels and canvas without the use of brushes or palette knives. This allows him to truly connect with his work and layer on the multifaceted emotions he feels in that moment. Darren frequently donates art for specific events and charities that benefit the LBGTQ+ community in addition to sitting on the board for DIFFA Chicago. www.hudsonyardsgallery. com/darren-jones

JONATHAN POZNIAK Like many gays, Jonathan Pozniak grew up in a deeply homophobic town and encountered all the hatred and scars that went along with it. But what he gained is far more important, building a backbone to handle rejection. The rejection he’s encountered growing up gay is often like the rejection many of us feel from within the gay communities as we try to navigate our place within it. Jonathan’s path was to look outside of everything he knew, trying to find his own community, his own tribe, leading him to over 70 countries on all 7 continents. The survival skills he learned growing up in a homophobic society served him well as he navigated his way across the world shooting projects and experiencing great people that were as different to him as he was to them. He learned to see the good in people who were often anti-gay because of their cultures and religions. The idea of “pride” is about having the backbone to be different, to be ok with not fitting in, and to stand by who you are even amid your own demographics. But it’s also accepting the same differences in others. It’s about finding your tribe in life, connecting with fellow artists just as much as it is a remote tribe in a foreign land. www.hudsonyardsgallery.com/jonathan-pozniak

ART VIEW CHRIS ZACCARIA Growing up in the outskirts of Philadelphia, Chris Zaccaria (AKA Abusive Robot) developed a keen imagination to escape the oftendangerous reality of being an LGBT child. His overactive imagination was fostered and mentored by his mother who encouraged creativity and expression. Her tragic death is what drove Chris to create the boldly visual world known as Abusive Robotics Co. – which tells the story of his life through alien-like creatures, daring colors, and spiritual symbolism. Zaccaria’s mind has always been a refuge from the scariest parts of life – loss, rejection, and invisibility. The characters tell a story, the artist’s story and allow him to process all the lessons that life throws his way. www.hudsonyardsgallery.com/abusive-robot

PERSPECTIVE

THE “UNBRIDLED” BRIDAL PARTY (PART 3) BY JILL LANGHAM

Have we sold out? Palm Springs has changed, there is no doubt and no contest about it. What it was, is a far cry from what it is now. For those of you who lived here in the 80’s and 90’s, when Spring Breakers and Motorcycle groups ruled the streets, clubs, and bars, can see that it is happening all over again. Past Mayor Frank Bogart in 1986 and again with Sonny Bono in 1988, ended Spring Break in Palm Springs after a complete study was done to evaluate the amount of damage done to our town both financially and ultimately spiritually. Can it be that we are right back where

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

we were. Are we attracting the wrong energy and is it again hurting our town? Does History really need to repeat itself 34 years later? I moved here in 2006 from Santa Fe, NM where I had lived since 1994. We had a few of the coolest Gay clubs I had ever been to and many Gay-owned restaurants and galleries. Today it is a vacation town of about 87,505 people, and like Palm Springs is 4060% Gay. Today, there may still be Gay-owned businesses, but you can forget the Gay night life for it does not exist. You very rarely see any Gay men out at night because there are no Gay bars or places that are Gay occupied. Instead, the gay men there have lots of dinner and house parties. Sound familiar?

Let’s look at Laguna Beach, the gay Mecca of the late 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. The famous Boom-Boom Room was the “It” Bar of the west coast or at least So Cal and much of the city was inhabited by Gay Men and Gay Bars. As far back as 1985, 18 – 30% of the population was Gay. It grew even larger over the 90’s with many of those men eventually relocating to Palm Springs. Today, there is only one bar in Laguna Beach that has a Gay night, once a week. Be forewarned people it is happening to our city right now.

expensive alcohol. What this tells me is that they have no concept of how much liquor they can handle and have huge budgets to play with which brings me back to money over quality of occupants.

I could go on about The Castro, WeHo, Boys Town, Wilton Manors, The Fruit Loop and so many more but it is all the same story and is not limited to the U.S.

If you come to try to understand and support the long struggle that the Gay community has fought, then come on in. But just like going to a new friend’s home, be aware of what behaviors are acceptable. What works in a straight bar is not going to work in a gay bar. In this regard I feel like it is the job of both the bar owners and the community at large to make the rules clear to these newcomers.

You fought for 50+ long years for your rights. Have you conceded and given up? I am so sad and devastated by this. I feel like I am the only one willing to fight. How can this be? Have you lost your drive? Are you too tired or have you resigned yourselves to believe that you have no power? I keep hearing Gay men say something to the effect that if Gay men complain about the how the bars have changed, they are reminded in not so pleasant terms that “This is what you wanted, isn’t it?” I ask them what that means and am told that the Gay community wanted to belong, wanted to be accepted and wanted to be a part of something bigger. Okay, I can sure relate to all those things given my past and the rejection I felt for being different, but for God’s sake, I sure as heck didn’t need a bunch of what I see as immature people running into the clubs, taking them over with obnoxious adolescent behaviors reminiscent of a nursery school. Further, I never expected to hear loud, tacky music with no soul to replace the tribal, house music that has enchanted me over the last few decades. It’s a known fact that alcohol tends to bring out the worst in people and it is sure evident in what were our gay bars. I don’t like drunk people period regardless of their sexual preferences. Okay, I know that I am on a tirade but please hear me loud and clear, it is not the sex, gender, or age of the people I am unhappy with, it their disrespectful behaviors that has me spinning out. People who can’t handle the liquor they are drinking should be turned away from entering a club or bar. It is against the law for bartenders to serve intoxicated people yet, I have seen bartenders selling drinks to “drunk” young girls and have been in the bathrooms with them as they “puke” all over the places and never in the toilet!

If people want to frequent Gay bars because of the energy that you have created then I say, “Welcome One and All.” But if they are coming to a Gay bar to gawk; make fun of; laugh at; harass or ridicule its occupants, then please, do us all a favor and stay home!

Can you imagine what our world would be like now if back in the 1400’s the Indigenous Peoples of the America’s had welcomed the White man with a list of acceptable behaviors? Behaviors that honored their beliefs and traditions. Maybe we wouldn’t have stayed here. Instead, we forced our way in and decided to show them how they “should” live. Right or wrong, good, or bad, for better or worse, we ultimately changed their culture and they, I think would agree, are not the same as a result. I’m very serious. To me this is a cultural phenomenon. You are the culture! You have you own rules and ways of loving and living but I see the Gay Culture disappearing before my eyes. The Animal Kingdom consists of 9 to 10 million species each defined by their own behaviors. Bears will never be Pigs; Pigs will never be Dogs so why must Gay Culture become integrated with the rest of the world and lose the identity you all fought so hard for? In closing, I have an idea that I hope you will consider. Go back to your Bars, starting right now. Show up the way you used to, pre-apps. Go to Happy Hour, then go to dinner, run home, and change into your dancing clothes and head back to the scene that you created. Dance on the Dance Floor. Stay out till 2am, then go home and have tons of sex all night long! Don’t wait till the Fall and the start of Season 2023. Start right now, all summer long. Show the Bar owners that you want to Take Back Your Clubs. If you fill up your Bars and Clubs, the bouncers will have no choice but to tell the gaggles of women who show up that the Bar is “filled to capacity,” and that they will have to wait until 20+ Gay men leave before they can come in! No prejudice, No discrimination, just facts! I have faith in you! You can do this!

Many Gay men have vacation rentals here in Palm Springs, and I have been told by many of them that when the Bridal Parties leave at the end of the weekend they leave behind tons of very, very

DAP UPDATE

RESEARCH AND DESIGN OF PROPOSED GUARANTEED INCOME PILOT PROGRAM

BY SUSAN UNGER

DAP Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and Queer Works, a nonprofit social service agency, have announced progress on their research and design of a proposed guaranteed income pilot to benefit extremely low-income individuals. Over the last several months, the two organizations have been researching pilots in other areas of the country, consulted with expert advisors with extensive guaranteed income pilot experience, and analyzed a variety of pilot design options. This research will help them to prepare a funding application to the State of California Department of Social Services (CDSS). This application is expected to be issued in the next several months. “We’re making good progress on research and design,” said David Brinkman, CEO of DAP Health. “A significant amount of fundraising will also be required,” he added. “Assuming that’s successful, we’ll be able to move forward.” In the meanwhile, the two organizations want to correct misinformation and misconceptions about the proposed pilot that have proliferated widely in the media in recent weeks. “Unfortunately, there have been many, many pre-judgments of this idea, even before our research and design phase got underway,” said Brinkman. The primary misconception the two agencies want to correct is that all pilot participants will have the same demographic profile. “On Day 1 we wanted to investigate the possibility of prioritizing people who are Transgender and Non-binary. It’s a population we work with daily, and we know that so many are seriously challenged financially,” said Jacob Rostovsky, CEO of Queer Works. “Simply stating this set off a firestorm of media attention, but we hadn’t started our research yet. What we’ve learned since then is that successful guaranteed income pilots are open to applicants of all demographic backgrounds. The one commonality between participants is extremely low income. The key is to be inclusive versus exclusive. And, importantly, that approach will include Transgender and Non-binary people, too.”

The second misconception the two agencies want to address concerns the $200,000 in funding recently granted to them by the City of Palm Springs for research, design, and development of a funding application. “This isn’t a lump sum grant” said Rostovsky. “We’ll be submitting operational expenses to the city monthly and getting reimbursed. It’s not likely the full amount will be needed or used.” ABOUT DAP HEALTH DAP Health is an advocacy-based health center in Palm Springs, CA serving over 10,000 patients, offering medical and mental healthcare, STI testing and treatment, dentistry, pharmacy, and lab services. WELLNESS

UNDERSTANDING THE GENDER SPECTRUM BY JIM DISSETT The social concept of gender has existed worldwide for centuries, but the perception of what is masculine or feminine typically changes from culture to culture. Still, those who fail to conform to the popularly accepted definitions of gender roles are often met with exclusion, indifference or even hatred.

traditional masculine traits, traditional feminine traits, some combination of both or something separate from traditional roles? Sexual orientation: Attraction to men, women, both sexes or none. Sex and Gender Identity Gender Expression and Sexual Orientation

There are biological factors that determine sex, including chromosomes, hormones, and genitalia. But gender is determined through a person’s internal feelings called gender identity, and how they express their gender through their outward appearance is referred to as gender expression. While one’s sex is linked to biology, giving the distinctions of male or female, gender is a social idea.

It is important to note that an individual’s position in the gender spectrum can change and evolve over time. The free downloadable Pride Guide: Gender was created in partnership by Cannabis Creative Movement and The Full Spectrum to help individuals understand and express gender more freely.

“We should think about gender as a spectrum, and a person’s gender can really only be identified by themselves,” said Neil Lequia, founder and current Board President of The Full Spectrum, a nonprofit organization that supports the cannabis LGBTQ+ industry and community. “We should encourage everyone to break free from societal norms when those norms do not reflect their personal experience. In doing so, we will be enabling individuals to feel fully comfortable to manifest their gender identity through their gender expression. This creates a world where everyone’s full potential can be reached. But we know it is not always easy to understand what can feel like foreign or uncomfortable concepts of gender. So, in the spirit of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, we have partnered with Cannabis Creative Movement to educate on gender identity and expression.” The result is The Pride Guide: Gender, which provides a thorough overview of the issue of gender and why it is important to honor an individual’s gender expression. Many people think about gender as a binary concept, where there are only two options, and a person must be either one or the other. However, throughout human history we know that many societies have viewed gender as a spectrum. To help individuals understand and express their gender better, they should consider their position in the following spectrums: Sex: Is a person male, female or somewhere in between? Gender identity: How a person identifies as male, female, transgender, genderqueer, or other identity. Gender expression: Does an individual express themselves through

“Pride is focused on celebrating everyone’s right to freely express oneself and feel good about who they are,” said Katie Burrell, vice president and COO of PufCreativ, one of the founding partners of the Cannabis Creative Movement. “But Pride is more than a celebration of sex and gender, it is also a celebration of gender fluidity and the deconstruction of traditional gender roles. We are gratified by the opportunity to partner with The Full Spectrum to be able to provide resources that help break down these societal barriers.” The Pride Guide: Gender is available free to download at https://thefullspectrumnetwork.com/wp-content/ uploads/2022/06/The-Pride-Guide-Gender-2022-1.pdf We encourage donations to The Full Spectrum through this link to help grow their message and amplify their resources to the public. This summer, Teamm8 is celebrating all the rainbow gladiators of Pride. Their sexy new “Spartacus” underwear collection is built for gay men to stand tall and fight any obstacle the Family Research Council and other antiLGBTQ hate groups throw at them. The collection is available in six bold colors, each representing a color of the rainbow. TEAMM8 is donating proceeds from the sale of “Spartacus” to MINUS18, an organization that champions LGBTQIA+ youth. 1. Mark and Matt love it how their booties shake in their Teamm8 thong th-thong-thongthongs. Mark sports the Flame Orange thong while Matt opts for purple. 2. J.R. PRICE RELEASES NIGHTMARE BY TOM TIETJEN

Grammy-nominated songwriter J.R. Price is out now with his Nightmare EP, the follow-up to his debut EP, Daydream. Where Daydream was vibrant, exuberant, and full of hope, Nightmare is the opposite. “My light has been completely depleted,” Price, who has recently sustained a devastating break-up, admits. “When a dream is drained of all its light, it is by very definition a nightmare. The darkness I have felt lately is unlike any of the other things I have been through, because I was given hope first, then had it ripped away.” To those who say it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all, he adamantly disagrees. “After heartbreak, I am the exact opposite of who I used to be. I’m full of shadows and hatred. I am mad all the time. I cry myself to sleep. I wake up every few hours. I can’t talk to my friends. I am living in a nightmare.” The EP explores the five stages of grief, navigating through the dark, chaotic journey one must travel after experiencing loss: before ultimately, hopefully, achieving some level of normalcy. The EP starts with “Dagger,” about the first cut to bleed and the denial

one must feel in accepting the reality of the situation. The second is the title track, about suffering through the aftermath of the split: the anger, the resentment, and the crushing heartache. In “Tiny”, the third single on Nightmare EP and the first release from it, Price sings about coming to the realization that the love who diminished him is really the one who is miniscule with little compassion and a shrunken heart. The song calls out all men who cause pain and feel no remorse. “’Tiny’ is how I imagine an Ed Sheeran angry dance song might sound,” J.R. Price reflects. A flute drives the chorus, guitars smash into the bass line, and the melody contains a hook of “N.A.U.G.H.T.Y.”, a song from his Daydream EP. “It’s an alternative dance track, if the club was in the woods,” Price continues. “I think it’s very intoxicating, witchy, sexy… and vengeful.” The music video for “Tiny” illustrates Price’s characterization of the song. It features Price and his sorcery sistas seeking revenge for his heartbreak by summoning his ex into the woods with seducing spells. “It gets steamy and emotional! I finally got to act and use that theatre degree I worked so hard for!” The fourth track on Nightmare is “To the Ghost” and it brilliantly represents the fourth stage of grief: that of depression. It leads into the final track, “I Have Me”, a dramatic and grand rock anthem with real brass instruments and a backup choir, about self-love and acceptance.

Price calls “I Have Me” the most important song on the Nightmare EP. “It shows that positivity doesn’t mean letting pain go. It’s about owning the pain and learning from it. Carrying your baggage with ease.” Through the process of writing and recording Nightmare, J.R. Price has finally come to the realization that the love he has been seeking from family and friends his whole life cannot be found until he loves himself. “I have learned that I must accept what I have been dealt in life and that the only thing I can change is how I view myself. I must love myself. That’s the real message I received while making Nightmare.” Nightmare is produced by J.R. Price, Ricky Allson, and Grammy award winning producer Jeff the Jedi Master Jones (Wynton Marsalis, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Alicia Keys, etc.). It was engineered by Brian Culligan. Feathers Wise, nominated for the Grammy this year in the Electronic Dance Recording Category, also worked on the record’s production. J.R. Price’s “Nightmare” is being distributed independently and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all digital platforms. Physical copies and JRP merch are also available at jrprice.org. ICONA POP JOINS FORCES WITH ULTRA NATÉ FOR NEW SINGLE, ‘YOU’RE FREE’ BY MARTHA TANG

Global chart-topping duo Icona Pop are back today, joined by legendary singer, songwriter, DJ, and producer Ultra Naté for a brand-new track titled ‘You’re Free.’ This undeniable summer-clubbanger pays homage to Ultra Naté’s 1997 Billboard’s Dance Club Songs Chart #1 hit ‘Free.’ Speaking about the collaboration, Icona Pop reveal, “We’ve always loved Ultra Naté’s original “Free,” and used to play it in the clubs as DJs in Stockholm, even before we started Icona Pop! It is the ultimate expression of what we want Icona Pop to represent; freedom to be whoever you want to be, live life to the fullest, and have fun. At first it was intimidating when we started to play around with the idea of making a new version, but it felt natural and really came together when Ultra Naté said she wanted to collaborate on our version, we are beyond honored. Ultra Naté is such a legend, and this song is a classic. We hope that we have done it justice” Ultra Naté adds, “I’m so excited about this collaboration with Icona Pop and the reimagining of my classic, ‘Free’ on its 25th Anniversary. I feel like what has come together here is so special and made for this moment. ‘You’re Free’ really is the kind of interpretation I had hoped for. To introduce the song to a next generation of clubbers in a way that is not framed as nostalgia, but as very now. It’s so important to find a way to bridge the gap when working with such a highly identifiable, classic record - and believe me, many have tried over the years! When I first received the demo to hear the concept and where the production was going, I immediately felt good about it. I love the new parts, the energy, and Aino and Caroline’s distinct singing style. It all feels like a big party with a lot of in-your-face attitudes, and I’m here for all of that! “ ‘You’re Free’ follows hot on the heels of the recent 10-year anniversary of the duo’s hit single, ‘I Love It’ (feat. Charli XCX) which celebrated the milestone on June 14. To commemorate the release of the track, Icona Pop recently re-imagined the track, alongside producers Osrin and Ellis.

48 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Icona Pop continue to slay since the release of their 2013 fulllength debut, This Is… Icona Pop, which garnered critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and Rolling Stone as the duo performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and America’s Got Talent in addition to featuring on the iconic HBO series Girls and a popular Saturday Night Live sketch. They canvased the globe on sold out tours with Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and One Direction and joined Tiësto for the banger ‘Let’s Go’ in 2014. Along the way, the duo has performed alongside everyone from Avicii to The Chainsmokers as well as gracing the stages of Ultra, Tomorrowland, Mark Ronson’s Club Heartbreak, and more. Since then, they have consistently filled the gap in music when it comes to upbeat, carefree, quality dance-pop. ‘You’re Free’ with Icona Pop and Ultra Naté is available everywhere now.
