SHA-WING BATTER! QUEER FACTS ABOUT AMERICA BY MIKEY ROX

The boys of summer are back – and you know what that means: All them butts! Aside from gawking at your baseball favorite players’ posteriors in form-fitting pinstriped pants, there are plenty of queer cheers to give for America’s national pastime. Batter up!

Glenn Burke broke the first barrier – but it may have cost him As an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 to ’78 (and widely regarded co-inventor of the high-five – true story), Glenn Burke broke ground as the first active MLB player to come out as gay to his teammates and bosses. While he was asked to refrain from making his sexual orientation public by Dodgers’ top brass, Burke told People magazine in 1994 that his “mission as a gay ballplayer was to break a stereotype” and he thought it worked. In other interviews and in his autobiography, however, he suggested that prejudice drove him out of the sport, not the injury that sent him back down to the minors after a year with the Oakland Athletics. The A’s released Burke from his contract before the end of his injured farm-team season, and he retired from the game in 1980. In the initial years following his retirement, Burke competed in 100- and 200-meter sprints at the inaugural Gay Games in 1982 and in basketball at the 1986 Games, and for many years he played for the San Francisco Gay Softball League. Burke died of complications from AIDS in 1995. Burke befriended Tommy Lasorda Jr. – and Tommy Senior wasn’t happy about it Legendary Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda Sr. – who led the team to two World Series championships, four National League pennants and eight division titles during his 20-year stewardship from 1976 to 1996 – had a gay son. Burke befriended the younger Lasorda Jr., which angered the “family values” manager, causing a rift that likely contributed to Burke being traded to the A’s after three seasons in Los Angeles. Lasorda Jr. died of AIDS complications in 1991 at age 33. Lasorda Sr. died earlier this year without ever having admitted he had a gay son.

A’S FAVORITE PASTIME

It’s been 23 years since the second MLB player publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation Billy Bean, an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, L.A. Dodgers and San Diego Padres from 1987 to 1995, came out in the Miami Herald in 1999, four years after retiring. Besides Burke, he remains the only other former MLB player to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality post-career; no active player has ever come out publicly and no former players have come out since. In 2003, Bean released his autobiography Going the Other Way: Lessons from a Life in and out of Major League Baseball, and in 2014 he was named MLB’s first Ambassador for Inclusion. In 2016 that role was expanded to Vice President of Social Responsibility and Inclusion, and today Bean serves as Vice President and Special Assistant to the Commissioner. The L.A. Dodgers are the only team with both players who have come out as gay Both Burke and Bean played for the Dodgers during their MLB careers – and as history tends to repeat itself, maybe there’s a gayby on the Dodgers’ roster right now. If that’s true, here’s hoping he has the courage to come out and make history while an active player, put the final nail in the coffin of the Dodgers’ homophobic past, and serve as an inspiration to aspiring young pro ball players everywhere. No pressure. Statistics suggest there are dozens of closeted pro baseball players In a 2015 article for the New York Times, economist and public policy scholar Justin Wolfers wrote that based on the proportion of American men who have admitted to being gay or bisexual (though not necessarily out), there must be closeted MLB players actively taking the field. Thirty MLB teams each have 40-men rosters equaling 1,200 players who don’t publicly identify as queer.

“If baseball players are as likely to be gay as other men their age – let’s go with an estimate of 1 in 25 – then the odds that none of these men are gay is one in two sextillion,” Wolfers wrote. “A sextillion comes after a trillion, quadrillion and quintillion; it is a thousand billion billion.” Of course, there may be gay or bisexual men in MLB who have ripped a page from Burke’s playbook and only confided within their own club. Time will tell. Lower-level pro ball has a much better coming-out average Since Sean Conroy, former pitcher for the independent Sonoma Stompers, came out publicly in 2015 while still on the team’s roster – the first-ever active pro ball player to do so – a handful of others have followed in his pioneering footsteps (at various stages of their careers), including MiLB players David Denson, Tyler Dunnington, Jason Burch, and John Dillinger. There are 30 MLB teams – and all but one of them host a Pride night

Twenty-one years ago this summer, the Chicago Cubs kicked off MLB’s Pride-night tradition with its now-annual “Out at Wrigley” celebration, and almost every club in the organization has followed suit. Twenty-eight teams in the United States and one in Canada host an evening of LGBTQ inclusiveness, usually with special ticket packages that include seats in a dedicated Pride section and rainbow-colored baseball swag. The lone holdout? The two-decadestoo-late New York Yankees. Three years ago, the Yanks acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and honored five first-annual YankeesStonewall Scholarship winners in a special pre-game commemoration ceremony that unveiled a plaque behind the center-field fence dedicated to the occasion. Yet still no Pride night. The San Francisco Giants made rainbow history for Pride 2021 MLB teams are known to incorporate cause-based logos and patches into their uniforms throughout the season, like the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon, for instance, or camouflage to show military appreciation. But on June 5, 2021, the San Francisco Giants became

COVER the first team in big-league history to rainbow-ize its uniforms, including a right-sleeve home jersey patch in Pride colors and a matching logo on players’ hats, in celebration of its LGBTQ+ fans.

But we all know that’s just industry code for “We’re too pussy to make this gay movie, so here’s Evita.” These are the best butts in baseball according to Us magazine

“We are extremely proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we kick off one of the best annual celebrations in San Francisco by paying honor to the countless achievements and contributions of all those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are allies of the LGBTQ+ community,” San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement.

There’s no definitive queer ranking of the best butts in baseball (and it’s a shame there isn’t) but a few years ago Us magazine asked its readers, majority females, to rank MLB’s greatest assets. Phillies left fielder Rhys Hoskins, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Matt Harvey, New York Yankee Giancarlo Stanton, Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper, and Dodger Cody Bellinger rounded out the top five – figuratively and literally.

A scripted series about gay professional ball players may be coming soon

Perfectly acceptable. Fine badonkadonks all around. Author Peter Lefcourt’s novel, The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story (1992), about homophobia in baseball that follows two MLB players who get caught up in a sex scandal should be required reading for any on-the-spectrum queer sports fans, but if you’re adverse to cracking open a dusty book, the live-action TV adaptation may be coming to a streaming service near you.

But are there better booties at-bat? Consider Diamondback David Peralta, Los Angeles Angel Mike Trout, and Athletics catcher Sean Murphy the next time they take the plate. Seventh-inning stretch, anyone?

Universal Television has optioned the novel for development with Oscar- and Emmy-winner David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) tapped to direct and co-write the pilot with Lefcourt. The project has been in development in some form for the past 28 years. Studios put the kibosh on Lefcourt’s and Frankel’s original movie scripts in 1996 – Disney was even interested as one point – citing lack of commercial appeal.

TRAILBLAZING LGBTQ SPORTS F BY JOSEPH MAJORS The LGBTQ community has been historically under-represented in the sporting world. Nowadays – and while there’s still a long way to go – the sports world is opening up, and this is thanks in part to some of the great LGBTQ ambassadors, who have broken barriers and shattered stereotypes.

RENÉE RICHARDS – TENNIS Dr. Renée Richards isn’t the most famous name on this list; however, she was a trailblazer. Over 40 years ago, she won a court battle to play in the 1977 US Open as a woman following gender reassignment surgery. The following year, she reached the final of the US Open women’s doubles tournament. Richards would then go on to become a spokesperson for transgender sportspeople, plus she’d eventually coach tennis great Martina Navratilova, who’ll you’ll find further down this list.

MEGAN RAPINOE – SOCCER Megan Rapinoe is the current captain of the US national team, as well as the winner of both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup – a tournament she won along with her team. Rapinoe works alongside several LGBTQ organizations and has been awarded a place on the board of directors at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. She is also a spokesperson for Athlete Ally, which aims to stop homophobia and transphobia in the sporting world.

IAN THORPE – SWIMMING Australian Ian Thorpe – known by many as the “Thorpedo” – is one of the most successful swimmers of all time. He has won five Olympic gold medals, which is the highest number won by any Australian athlete. He has also won 11 gold medals at the World Championships. Thorpe came out in 2004 on a UK TV show. In 2017, he was a high-profile supporter of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, campaigning in support of same-sex marriage to be legalized in Australia – something that happened that same year.

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

There are obviously a ton of amazing sports stars, here are just a few LGBTQ athletes who have really pushed the agenda and attempted to make the world of sports a more welcoming place for all.

FIGURES JUSTIN FASHANU – SOCCER Justin Fashanu was the first British pro soccer player to come out as gay, which he did back in 1990 via an interview with the UK tabloid The Sun. Eight years later, Fashanu tragically took his own life following allegations of sexual assault made by a teenager in the US. Despite the tragic end to his story, Fashanu became a symbol for the struggle for acceptance by LGBTQ players and supporters.

BILLIE JEAN KING – TENNIS Billie Jean King is a tennis icon, having won an unbelievable 39 Grand Slam titles. She was, and still is, a great advocate for the LGBTQ community, as well as someone who pushed the subject of gender equality. King is a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. She has been outspoken recently on the homophobic and transphobic comments made by Margaret Court and thinks that the Margaret Court Arena – one of the courts used at the Australian Open – should be renamed.

BRIAN BOITANO – FIGURE SKATING Brian Boitano was a huge name in sports during the 1980s and early 1990s, and the pinnacle of his career came when he won gold at the 1988 Olympics in Lillehammer. He also won the World Championships twice and the US National Championships four times. Boitano did not come out as gay while competing. Instead, he revealed his sexuality in 2013, when he was appointed to the US delegation at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He said that until then he had never wanted to come out.

TOM DALEY – DIVING Tom Daley is an English diver, with two World Championship medals. The first of these medals came when he was just 15. He is also the youngest diver to ever compete in an Olympic final. Daley came out as bisexual in 2013 via his YouTube channel, declaring he’d been in a relationship with his partner Dustin Lance Back since earlier in the year. They married in 2017. He has been active in campaigning against anti-gay laws in Commonwealth countries and is also a patron of LGBT+ charity Switchboard (UK).

AUGUST 2022 15

COVER ORLANDO CRUZ – BOXING Boxing could arguably be seen as the most macho of sports, which makes Orlando Cruz even more remarkable. The Puerto Rican came out as gay in 2012, while still an active boxer, and went on to challenge for the WBO Featherweight title in 2013 and the WBO Lightweight title in 2016, losing both bouts. In 2013, Cruz married his partner in Central Park – the same year he was one of the first class inducted into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. In 2018, he was also Grand Marshall for the Chicago Pride Parade.

MICHAEL SAM – NFL Michael Sam is a former defensive end, who was drafted in 2014 by the St. Louis Rams. When Sam was drafted, he became the first publicly gay player ever in the NFL, having come out a few months beforehand. Unfortunately, Sam’s career wasn’t a long one. After being cut from the Rams, he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, however never made it past their practice squad. He would then go on to spend a year in the CFL. He retired in 2015 due to mental health reasons and is now a motivational speaker and author.

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA – TENNIS Finally, we come to Martina Navratilova, who is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She won an unbelievable 59 Grand Slam titles, including 18 in singles competition, and spent 332 weeks as the world’s number one female tennis player. Navratilova is now known as an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights. She has previously spoken at the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. Navratilova also supports animal rights and humanitarian causes.

GREG LOUGANIS - DIVING Often called the greatest diver in history, Louganis won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics. He came out publicly as HIV-positive in 1995 and is a gay rights activist as well as an HIV awareness advocate. The Olympic gold medalist has done work with the Human Rights Campaign to advocate for the rights of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

FALLON FOX - MARTIAL ARTS Fox is the first openly transgender American mixed martial artist. The 2015 documentary Game Face explores her early career amid criticism that she had an unfair advantage as a transgender athlete.

CARL NASSIB - NFL In June 2021, Nassib became the first active NFL player to publicly come out as gay. He shared the news via an Instagram video, saying, “I actually hope one day that videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary, but until then I’m going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate.”

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

It ain’t none of your beeswax. None of your business, so just keep your nose out of things. You’re on a need-to-know basis, and you don’t need to know. It’s being taken care of, never you mind, it isn’t your concern. In “Wendy Carlos: A Biography” by Amanda Sewell, some things just aren’t discussed. No one who knew Wendy Carlos as a child should’ve been surprised that she became the musician she did: Carlos’ mother’s family loved to sing and dance, and Carlos’ parents wanted to make sure she continued the tradition. They gave her piano lessons, but they couldn’t afford a piano, so Carlos’ father drew piano keys on a piece of paper so she could practice. Though she was “assigned the male sex at birth,” Carlos knew early in her life that she was a girl and was baffled that others couldn’t see that. It grew to greatly affect her: somewhat of a prodigy in music and early computing, Carlos won awards and accolades for her studies but her gender identity left her feeling awkward and alone, Sewell says. This was a time when transgender people were largely held up as “freaks.” So, Carlos kept her gender identity private, only revealing her truth to one friend with similar passions for music experimentation. Enjoying a spirited mutual challenge, she and Rachel Elkind played with new sounds until the day Elkind became intrigued by Carlos’ rendition of a Bach composition reproduced with a Moog synthesizer. As it happened, Carlos needed money to continue her work and with Elkind’s help, that composition became an entire album they called Switched-On Bach. It did the trick: Carlos indeed made money from the millionselling album. But it also made her famous, which led to requests for interviews and intrusions about her gender identity, a subject that she felt unnecessarily superseded her musical career. And that was something she absolutely did not want... Over the past 40 years, Wendy Carlos has denied most requests to be interviewed, including an offer extended by author Amanda Sewell for this book. No problem: Sewell used an abundance of other sources to craft this biography, indicating that Carlos’ refusals were likely due to her ire at reporters who’ve continued to focus on her gender, rather than on her work. The irony is that a good portion of “Wendy Carlos: A Biography” deals with Carlos’ gender identity and her transitioning. And yet – how could it not? Sewell shows how Carlos’ giftedness and her pioneering use of then-new technology changed music, as a whole; in a way, her respectful reporting on Carlos’ transition, relative to 1960s social perceptions and to LGBT history, both occurring at

roughly the same time, also shows another aspect to Carlos’ personality and her dogged reach for what was then rather new. Still, one can sympathize with Carlos’ wishes, which makes reading “Wendy Carlos: A Biography” feel sometimes voyeuristic. Introducing new fans to her wax is important, but check it out: does the rest of the story need to be waxed? “Wendy Carlos: A Biography” by Amanda Sewell c.2020, Oxford University Press $34.95 / $38.50 Canada 264 pages

The St. Louis-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter previously released the hit singles “Work 2 Hard,” and “Swimming” featuring Trippie Redd. We certainly do not see her star fading anytime soon. Singer-songwriter Cassidy King has successfully built up her reputation as a solo artist with her singles “professional Smiler” and “Wasted”. In her latest EP, Concrete Walls, the Chardon, Ohio native continues to shape her passionately charged resonance delivering a moment of reckoning that only comes with deep self-reflection. Siena Liggins went from a behind-the-scenes songwriter to one of Billboard’s Top Ten new LGBTQ artists of the year. Ms. Out Tonight, the singer’s debut album serves as a seminar on representing queer sexuality in music. On sexed-up anthems like “Dirty Girl” feat. Yung Baby Tate, “No Valet,” “Girlfriend” and more, Liggins leaves no room for interpretation; she’s going to write songs about her authentic experience as a queer woman.

>> PALM SPRINGS PLAZA THEATRE FOUNDATION SELECTS ARCHITECT FOR RESTORATION PROJECT BY TIM O’BAYLEY

The Palm Springs City Council, in concurrence with the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, has approved the selection of Architectural Resources Group, Inc. to complete the design and oversee the renovation of the Plaza Theatre. Architectural Resources Group has completed a few theater and other historic projects of similar scope including New Mission Theater in San Francisco and The Alameda Theater. The firm has an Architectural Conservator on board who will be instrumental in the restoration of the Plaza Theatre. The design is anticipated to take approximately eight months to complete, with construction anticipated to begin in the spring of 2023. It is projected that the work will take approximately one year to complete, allowing the Theatre to open around the Spring of 2024. Regarding the status of the fundraising campaign, Foundation President J.R. Roberts said: “Our board formed in earnest last year in response to a $5 million challenge grant from David Lee to support the restoration effort. David has worked extensively in television comedy, writing, and producing Cheers and The Jeffersons, and writing, directing, and co-creating Wings and Frasier. Along with other smaller donations, an anonymous donor pledged $2

million. Recently, the foundation board secured an additional $2 million from the City of Palm Springs and $2.5 million from the State of California bringing our total to date to $12 million.” Due to anticipated cost increases, the fundraising goal has been revised to $16 million to restore the building to its original splendor and update it to meet the access, technology, and equity needs of today and tomorrow. Any funds more than the actual construction costs will be reserved in an endowment fund to help ensure the theatre’s future needs are met. The Foundation’s intent is to raise the remaining $4 million by the end of 2022. When restored, the Plaza Theatre will be the only place available for the entire community to come together and utilize it as an affordable community venue showcasing diverse programming for all people, local youth organizations, promoting multicultural programming in film, music, live theater, education, comedy, and entertainment for all. It will also support and serve nonprofit organizations like the Palm Springs International Film Festival, ONEPS, Modernism Week, and many others. The valley needs venues like the Plaza Theatre that are accessible and affordable for everyone. For more information about the Theatre, please visit SaveThePlazaTheatrePS.org

MONKEYPOX ON THE RISE IN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY BY JIM DISSETT

Anyone can get monkeypox, but in the latest outbreak, the virus is predominantly spreading among gay and bisexual men. Officials noted that most of the people affected reported some level of sexual activity. That doesn’t mean the virus is sexually transmitted, but officials say it shows that prolonged skin-to-skin contact is one of the major ways monkeypox is now spreading. As Fauci warns monkeypox needs to be taken more seriously, former FDA commissioner says the window to control it probably has closed.

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows over 1,900 probable or confirmed monkeypox cases in the US. As of now, the risk of monkeypox is low, according to the CDC, but public health experts say there are still things you can do to protect yourself, especially if you’re in the pool of higher-risk people. That pool includes men who have sex with men, particularly those who have had multiple sexual partners in an area with known monkeypox cases. Here’s what to know.

HOW MONKEYPOX SPREADS Symptoms usually start within three weeks of exposure to the monkeypox virus and last two to four weeks. The virus typically triggers a rash with lesions that can be extremely painful. The pain may even be enough to push some people to go to the hospital, but that seems to be rare. The rash often starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, the CDC says. Some people will also have a fever at first. A person with monkeypox can give the virus to others at any point until their rash has healed, the scabs have fallen off and they have a fresh layer of skin on the affected area. The virus transmits primarily though close, skin-on-skin physical contact, but it can also spread when you touch objects like sheets or towels that may have been used by somebody with monkeypox, as well as through close face-to-face interactions like kissing.

THIS OUTBREAK IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT The latest outbreak looks a little different, according to Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, director of the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. Monkeypox isn’t considered a sexually transmitted disease, but most people who have gotten it in the US recently report some level of sexual activity, he said Monday. That can include penetrative encounters as well as oral sex. “Some people have had the rash all over their body or different parts of their body, but there are many who are presenting with the genital and anal lesions as their first indication of illness,” Daskalakis said. “That sort of speaks for that close prolonged contact.” The virus may theoretically be transmitted through respiratory droplets, he said, but the CDC is not seeing that happen in this outbreak. “I can’t prove how efficient it is. It doesn’t seem to be very efficient. So, it’s more contact with skin to skin, more than face-to-face contact. “But in the harm reduction discussion, it’s really important to say what we know and don’t know,” Daskalakis said. “It’s just important for folks to know that it’s not impossible to transmit monkeypox that way so they can really adjust behavior as needed.” PARTIES VS. WELLNESS

Scientists are still studying how monkeypox is spreading in this outbreak, but they say people don’t seem to be getting sick after, say, walking past someone or giving them a hug and brushing past a lesion on their skin. “If it’s a hug that doesn’t necessarily include a shirt, there’s a theoretical risk of transmission there, but that’s not what we’re hearing in terms of what’s happening with our cases, so it’s lower risk. I can’t say zero risk,” Daskalakis said. Rather, it’s longer contact that seems to be responsible for most cases now. “If you were to ask me how long ‘long’ is, I can’t answer that question, but it seems as if it’s possible that this is not being transmitted by a light brush,” Daskalaskis said. A circuit party, a large dance party that can attract thousands of men and last through a night or weekend, could be one way the virus spreads. Dancing shirtless at a party that has good ventilation, without interacting with someone who has visible lesions, is probably low risk. If there’s an after-party that leads to sex, that’s much riskier.

In enclosed spaces such as back rooms, saunas, or sex clubs, or at sex parties where there’s often anonymous contact with multiple partners, there may be a higher likelihood of spreading monkeypox, the CDC says. A typical gay bar where people go to hang out is different. “Socializing is a part of what LGBTQ people do. So, I don’t think that it’s something that we stop. It’s just sort of important to have awareness how monkeypox transmits and you’re aware of your own risk and how to mitigate that risk,” Daskalakis said. NOT ABOUT SEXUALITY Monkeypox isn’t like HIV, but gay and bisexual men are at risk of unfair stigma. We need to get across the message that monkeypox is not a disease of men who have sex with men. It is not about sexuality: people tend to be infected through close physical contact and it does not have to be sexual in nature. Infected people will tend to infect people they have close contact with, which is why the risk of spread

AUGUST 2022 37

WELLNESS

is high in affected households. So, while a high proportion of cases have so far occurred among men who have sex with men, in part this reflects their social networks. It could just as easily have been an outbreak in a heterosexual friendship network, or a group of sports people, or occupational group, or other social groups. Would it have carried as much risk of stigma then? Another danger of mis-portrayal of the monkeypox outbreak as a phenomenon that only affects men who have sex with men is that others who at risk – for example, household members – may not realize this and fail to protect themselves. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Researchers are also investigating whether the virus can be spread by someone who has no symptoms, or through semen, vaginal fluids, and fecal matter, according to the CDC. The CDC says that wearing a condom may help, but alone, it probably will not protect against the spread of monkeypox. However, the agency still emphasizes that condoms can prevent other sexually transmitted infections. There is a vaccine to protect against monkeypox, but demand for it far outstrips supply. One thing people can do to protect themselves until the supply improves is to avoid contact with those who are clearly infected, especially close face-to-face contact like kissing.

“In line with our harm reduction guidance, thinking about reducing your number of partners, potentially trying to avoid anonymous contacts ends up being smart from the perspective of decreasing the risk of exposure,” Daskalakis said. The CDC says people might want to reduce skin contact as much as possible by having sex with clothes on or after covering areas where the rash is present. If you choose to have sex with someone who has monkeypox or who might have been exposed to it, talk about the virus ahead of time. Officials also say to keep in mind that their advice could change as scientists learn more. It may change if monkeypox starts to spread through other contact, such as when people live closely together in places like homeless shelters or when people play full-contact sports. “I think the most important thing is that it’s good to have awareness and some level of worry about some of these things, but it’s not paralysis,” Daskalakis said. “Realistically speaking, skin-on-skin contact of any variety theoretically can transmit monkeypox, but what we’re seeing is, you kind of have to work at it a bit.” Our best chance of snuffing out this outbreak quickly is through early detection and quarantining people who are infected and protecting their close contacts through vaccination, to break the chains of transmission. As we know all too well from experience with HIV virus, stigma won’t help. Thanks CNN.com & theconversation.com

STYLE TRANSGENDER FASHION MODELS NAVIGATE THEIR INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO STARDOM BY MARK BRUNO

Road to the Runway, Here-TV’s new docu-series premiering Friday, August 5, examines the roles that gender, race, socioeconomic status, and familial approval play in the lives of young, beautiful women charting their course toward fashion’s latest frontier: the transgender supermodel. The series profiles the twenty hopefuls competing in this year’s annual Slay Model search. Cameras follow the women to their hometowns to uncover their roots: the environments they were reared in and the circumstances that helped shape them into the beautiful, statuesque, fashionable young women they are today. Executive produced by GLAAD-award winner, Cecilio Asuncion and Phil Anthony, RD Alba and produced by Emmy-award winner David Millbern, Paul Colichman, Stephen P. Jarchow and John Mongiardo, Road to the Runway is an important reminder that these Trans models are more than mannequins: they are daughters, friends, and partners in love, with stories that deserve to be heard.

Among the cities visited in Road to the Runway are Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Florida. In Azle, TX, viewers meet Mylla James who comes from a highly conservative family, yet they support their daughter, joining her at photo shoots and even traveling with her to model opportunities in Los Angeles. “Most hometowns we visit on Road to the Runway are not in areas people would consider progressive,” Slay Model founder Cecilio Asuncion reflects. “It’s interesting that in many of the cases, we often find with parents that when it comes to loving their daughters, politics takes a back seat.” It was evident culturally, as well. Ayden Yee is a 15-year-old track star who ranks second in her state of Wisconsin. She is of Chinese descent, a culture where sons are traditionally deemed as more valuable. Cameras show the Yee family embracing Ayden for who she is; something Asuncion, an Asian American, found especially moving. “It is powerful to witness models who enjoy the support of

their families back home. They present as confident and secure. They’re armed with the knowledge that no matter what happens in the model search, they will be ok because they are loved.”

Runway,” Asuncion contends. “The model life is not an easy one. It is filled with unforgiving scrutinization and unavoidable rejection. It’s not for the faint of heart.”

Sadly, not all the women are so lucky. “The reality is a majority of our models have struggled their whole lives with living as their authentic true selves,” Asuncion continues. “They live in a world where simply walking out of the house takes incredible courage.”

He makes it clear to the hopefuls in Road to the Runway that his agency, Slay Model Management, is not selling Transness. “It is a fashion model agency, and we are selling a young woman’s capability to represent a brand or a designer.”

Still, their anguish could prove an advantage in the harrowing world of fashion. “Courage builds resiliency and that kind of tenacity is key to surviving the inevitable pitfalls on the Road to the

It takes more than beauty to be a bookable model. It takes determination, grit, and a visceral understanding that the woman is a model first, and Trans second. “As is often the case in model

competitions, the real challenge is an internal one,” Asuncion says. “It used to be that women reshaped themselves to fit the industry standard; striving to match the idealized version of a Barbie doll. Today’s fashion industry wants to see the real, unfiltered woman beneath the lashes and lipstick.” What Trans models have in their favor today – unlike any other time in history – is that clients are looking for diversity and representation. Slay Model Management models have appeared in campaigns for M·A·C Cosmetics, Hyundai, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue Germany, Macy’s, Biore’, Eva Mendes for NY and Co., and Savage X Fenty. They have appeared on TV in POSE, Law, and Order: SVU, Project Runway, and Netflix’s Next in Fashion. The agency’s first-signed and most recognized supermodel, Arisce Wanzer, who appears in Road to the Runway, has been featured on TV shows like MTV’s Ex on the Beach, and in campaigns for Marco, Opening Ceremony, Truvada, AT&T, Lululemon and Lucky Jeans. The urge for diversity even accounts for why the show was

picked up by the network. “At Here-TV, diversity and inclusion remain the central focus of our programing strategy,” says Emmywinning actor and producer David Millbern. “Producing Road to the Runway gives us the opportunity to honor and explore the lives of these extraordinary trans women, many of whom are also women of color. Their bravery inspires us.” “The sky is the limit for these young women,” Asuncion sums up. “From how I see it, it is my job to lead and develop the girl from hopeful to working model. The supermodel part is up to the individual. She must have the passion and drive to go the extra distance.” The winning model of this year’s annual Slay Model search earns a spot in a M·A·C Campaign, a trip to London to shoot a Carmen Liu Lingerie campaign, a Colors of Love ring, and a social media campaign from Faberge’, shoes from Lidia Talavera, and a year contract with Slay Model Management. As a teenager, they started improvisational singing at any chance they could get at random in NYC, whether it be people playing the guitar in the park or in front of a cafe, they’d jump in singing. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, daddi ru (formally known as Daryen Ru) began their love for music at a young age. After dancing with the School of Ballet with the Lincoln Center, they made a name in the film industry with works featured in DAZED Magazine, GLAAD and more. Their recent work DENIM about transgender rights, starring Jazz Jennings, was award-nominated, and featured in film festivals worldwide. They create their own music to spark raw and honest conversations through their lyrics. They are always striving to be pushed to elevate their artistry. The unique, nonbinary artist will release their first single, “My Parasite,” featuring Grandmaster Caz in August. The single dives deep into daddi ru’s relatable thoughts of wanting to escape a toxic relationship, and their work focuses on topics like the mind, body, and world. MARTINA PETRIC AND PERCY RICHTER RELEASE “ONE MORE NIGHT” BY TIFFANY.B WHITTAKER

Martina Petric and Percy Richter light up the LGBTQ+ with love. Singer-songwriter Martina Petric has teamed up with Londonbased musician Percy Richter for their newest single “One More Night” available now for streaming. Both artists have a contagious positivity to their music, causing the pair to collaborate beautifully on this dazzling piece which promotes love and affection in all its many forms. Petric and Richter were inspired by their stories inviting us to dance and making us remember the most important thing: Love is love, it is lightning and healing. A dance melody produced by Petric, that gained its upbeat style from Rene Roco, in which the artists seek to convey more positive feelings about romanticism. “Bringing along more awareness to our LGBTQ+ community, we want to leave a message with our music. With this single we decided it would be about love, intimacy, affection and that we live in a complex society that most of the time we don’t allow to love and be ourselves, a society of which we were victims” Along with the single, they released a music video which presents the same level of joy and tenderness as the heartwarming song. The cinematography captures moments of emotional intimacy, displaying the fringing feelings of adoration felt by two partners in love. The project works to combat the judgment and disapproval that some people have towards the LGBTQ+ community. This song commemorates love within all types of relationships regardless of a person’s sexual orientation. The music video compliments these themes, showing the affectionate queer relationships which don’t always get highlighted. Due to the artistic work of Petric and Richter, they have successfully developed a platform which shines a light on the LGBTQ+ community. Watch the music video for “One More Night” below!
