The Miltons, it seems, are the American Dream. For three generations, they’ve run a successful family banking business, enjoyed New York City’s cultural life, and passed summers on their private island in Maine. But when the youngest generation of Miltons must consider selling the island, they stumble across family secrets that force them to ask, at whose expense are they living their dream?

All featured author books will be available for sale at all book festival events in collaboration with Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

November 5 - 21, 2019

Thursday, November 7 I Wanted Fries with That: How to Ask for What You Want and Get What You Want By Amy Fish Noon Congregation B’nai Israel 6525 Sylvania Ave. $13 Luncheon and author presentation $28 Luncheon, author presentation, and book This event is supported in part through a generous grant from the Jewish Senior Services Supporting Organization

It’s a simple equation: You can’t get what you want unless you ask for it. But this is often easier said than done, especially if you are afraid of confrontation or hurting someone’s feelings. The stories in I Wanted Fries with That reveal real-world situations and show the myriad ways that you can speak up in your daily life and ask for what you want so that you can get exactly what you need.

Thursday, November 14 D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win World War II By Sarah Rose 7 p.m. Lourdes University Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd. $18 Dessert reception and author presentation $36 Dessert reception, author presentation, and book

Tuesday, November 19 The Floating Feldmans By Elyssa Friedland 7 p.m. Te’kela Mexican Cocina Y Cantina, 5147 South Main St. $18 Appetizer reception and author presentation $28 Appetizer reception, author presentation, and book

Thirty-nine women of Special Operations Executive went to war, and fourteen of them never came home. They broke barriers, smashed taboos, and altered the course of history. D-Day Girls focuses on the inspiring, dramatic story of three of the women who were recruited to lay the groundwork for the D-Day invasion.

Annette Feldman is turning 70 and she’s determined to use this milestone birthday as an opportunity to bring her family together on a cruise— whether they like it or not. But all does not go according to Annette’s plan. Over the course of the cruise, troublesome family secrets emerge, sibling rivalries resurface, and old and new resentments are felt, culminating in an all-out brawl on the last night of the trip.

This event is in partnership with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library and Authors!

In 1970, three-day-old Marra B. Gad was adopted by a white Jewish family in Chicago. For her parents, it was love at first sight—but they quickly realized the world wasn’t entirely ready for a family like theirs. At turns heartwrenching and heartwarming, Marra B. Gad has written an inspirational, moving memoir proving that when all else is stripped away, love is where we return, and love is our greatest inheritance.

Toledo Jewish Community Foundation

On Sunday, September 8, the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation hosted its annual leadership event at Temple Shomer Emunim. The luncheon was an opportunity for the Foundation to thank its generous planned giving and endowment donors, and to celebrate two of the Foundation's most dedicated philanthropists: Mickey Rosenberg, who received the Endowment Achievement Award, and Gerald Getz, z"l, who was honored with the Legacy Award. Through a spe-

cial video message, Foundation Chairman Dan Steinberg noted that over the past 40 years, the Foundation has grown its assets from $0 to approximately $45 million; last year alone, the Foundation granted $1 million to local, national and international charities. Following the luncheon, the premier a capella group Maccabeats rocked Jewish Toledo with their amazing vocal act; 450 community members of all ages enjoyed the fantastic concert together.

Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo

How to contribute to Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo/Toledo Jewish Community Foundation • • •

Donate online at www.jewishtoledo.org Call Tina Stieben at 419-724-0371 or email her at tina@JewishToledo.org for stock or IRA gifts Donate or pay by mail by sending your pledge cards and payments to: Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, Attention: Kathy Sherion, 6465 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania, Ohio 43560

Please note that checks need to be post-marked by December 31, 2019 for a 2019 tax deduction. Gift Policy Statement Regarding Donations of Stock Stock Payments Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo is happy to accept donations of stock as payment for pledges made to the Annual Campaign or to the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation. Stock gifts need to be received by 12 p.m. (noon) on December 26, 2019 in order to sell before the market closes. Please note the brokerage firm may charge a transaction fee up to an amount of $100.00.

It should be noted that our procedure is as follows for accepting stock:

Whenever a gift of stock is made, the donor receives a confirmation letter within 10 business days of receiving the check that the gift was made. Normally upon consultation with financial professionals, this is the date used when valuing the gift for IRS tax purposes. After being notified that a gift of stock has been made, either from the donor or a stockbroker, the stock will then transfer into the Federation’s/Foundation’s account and the stock will be sold by the next business day after receipt into the account. The net proceeds of the sale of stock will be applied against any outstanding pledges for the individual. The donor will be notified, in writing, what the net proceeds were on the same written notice mentioned above. To expedite this process, it is extremely helpful if the donor, his/her stockbroker or financial advisor notifies Federation's Department of Finance verbally or through email when a gift of stock is made. By following this procedure, the timing between the gift being made and the sale of the stock is greatly reduced. Please contact Tina Stieben, CFO, at tina@jewishtoledo.org or 419-724-0371, or 419-346-5397 (cell) for further assistance.

IRA Charitable Rollover Checks Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo is also happy to be able to accept IRA Charitable Rollover contributions to the Annual Campaign. Please contact Tina Stieben at 419-724-0371, Wendy Goldstein 419-724-0360 or Arleen R. Levine if you are making provisions with your financial advisor to donate with an IRA Charitable Rollover check; this way we can ensure that the check is processed timely and that you receive the appropriate tax letter. For further information on the eligibility to contribute using your IRA Charitable Rollover, please consult your financial advisor.

Personal Credit Card & Check Payment Deadlines Credit card payment information must be received at Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo by 12 Noon Friday, December 27, 2019 for 2019 tax purposes. As stated above, payments by check need only be postmarked December 31, 2019 for 2019 tax purposes, or you can make payments online at www.JewishToledo.org by midnight on December 31, 2019. Please note that our offices will be closed Wednesday, December 25, 2019 in observance of Christmas holiday. Please call the accounting department before 12:00 pm at 419-724-0366 to process a credit card payment over the phone.

Bereavement group for spousal loss Tuesday, November 12 4 – 6 p.m. Sekach Building

Plan to grab a bite after (restaurant location to be determined) One of the most important factors in healing from grief is the support of other people. Having support from your family, friends, or a community of others who have also experienced grief allows you to feel that someone else “gets it.” Being able to share your story or your feelings is vital to the healing process. We are trying to pay attention to this important stuff at JFS. We understand that there’s not a lot of support in the Toledo area, where our faith and values are very similar. We also understand that it might feel intimidating to join a bereavement group. You can always attend our support group and just listen. You won’t be asked to speak until you’re comfortable and you might feel better just being surrounded by a community (your community) with some understanding of the depth of your grief. So, come join us. Help us build this support.

Jewish community to mark 80 years since Kristallnacht Submitted by Chabad House of Greater Toledo On November 3, Toledo’s Jewish community will gather at Chabad House of Greater Toledo to mark 80 years since the horrors of Kristallnacht with a guest lecture. At 10 a.m., Rabbi Yitzchak Mendel Wagner, the first German-born rabbi since the Holocaust, will address the community via dynamic video conferencing. Kristallnacht, or the “Night of Broken Glass,” refers to the night of November 9, 1938, when German Nazis attacked Jews and rounded up tens of thousands to be sent to concentration camps. On this night in approximately 200 towns across Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, Nazis torched synagogues and vandalized Jewish homes, schools, and businesses. They murdered hundreds of Jews and dragged thousands from their homes, coldly dividing families as many looked on, unperturbed. The United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum website states “Kristallnacht was a turning point in the history of the Third Reich, marking the shift from antisemitic rhetoric and legislation to the violent, aggressive anti-Jewish measures that would culminate with the Holocaust.” One of Germany's youngest community rabbis, Rabbi Wagner is also the first rabbi in his hometown of Krefeld in more than 70 years. Krefeld’s synagogue was torched on Kristallnacht as firefighters turned a blind eye and Torah scrolls were rolled out into the street and stomped on by anti-Semites. Most of the Jewish community was eventually sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, never to be heard from again. Rabbi Wagner brings an insider’s perspective, along with his own personal experience, as he tells the story of German Jewry’s tragic demise and unexpected rebirth, rising from the ashes of the Holocaust to its current grandeur. He will address the struggles against anti-Semitism, new challenges, and moral dilemmas facing today’s German-Jewish community. “This is an exciting opportunity to hear firsthand what it's like to be a rabbi in post-Holocaust Germany,” said Rabbi Yossi Shemtov, director of Chabad. “Eighty years after Kristallnacht, Jews are again walking the streets where unspeakable atrocities once took place. This event is an opportunity to ask some tough questions and hear insightful answers from a Jewish community leader in modern-day Germany.” The lecture fee is $12 with a 40 percent discount for all five Chabad guest lectures. Bagels, lox, and cream cheese will be served. For more information and to RSVP, visit www.chabadtoledo.com/guestlecture.

Fiddler on the Roof comes to Strana- Fund opened to honor Jeff Sherman, han Theatre z”l, with kitchen naming The Tony Award-nominated Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof is coming to the Stranahan Theater October 17-20. A beloved theatrical classic, Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, The King and I), choreographed by acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter (inspired by the original choreography of Jerome Robbins), and has musical direction by Ted Sperling. Fiddler on the Roof is the heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, life, love, and laughter. This classic musical is rich with Broadway hits including “To Life (L’Chaim!),” “If I Were A Rich Man,” "Sunrise, Sunset,” "Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Tradition.” Tickets are on sale now at the Stranahan Theater box office at 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd., online at BroadwayInToledo.com, or by calling 419-381-8851.

Friends and family of Jeff Sherman, z”l, are raising money to name the Congregation B’nai Israel kitchen in his honor. The group kicked off their campaign this summer with an event to remember Sherman and celebrate his life. Known by many as "Deli Boy,” his personality shined through his exceptional culinary skills, which were often displayed in the Congregation B’nai Israel kitchen. Sherman passed away in November. Born in Utica, New York, to Bill and Helene Sherman of blessed memory, he and his family moved to Toledo in 1964. He graduated from Sylvania Southview High School in 1980 and studied communications at Specs Howard School of Media Arts. As a young adult, Sherman developed a passion for cooking and catering. He owned and operated Deli Delight at Franklin Park Mall and Spring Meadows Shopping Center. Sherman gave his culinary creations special names, primarily those of his family and close friends. After he closed his delis, Sherman worked for Lipari Foods for 23 years. He also operated Simply Delicious catering, providing countless meals for life events and business functions. Sherman was a devoted and loving husband to Alison Sherman, father to Sarah, Joshua, and Jamie Sherman, and grandfather to Odin. He relished time with family and friends and loved to FaceTime with his beloved grandson. His granddaughter, Jade, was born after he passed away. Donations to the fund set up by Sherman’s friends and family to name the Congregation B’nai Israel kitchen in his honor can be sent directly to Congregation B’nai Israel with a note indicating it’s intended for the fund. Checks may be made out to Congregation B’nai Israel.
