Standard Bank Foreword

SIMONE COOPER

Head: Business and Commercial Banking SA, Standard Bank

I

t’s an honour for me to reflect on Standard Bank’s partnership with Topco Media over the past 12 years. Together, we have created and continue to drive a platform for diverse women leaders who aspire to lead and influence. This edition of the Standard Bank Top Women Conference, the EmpowHER Series that preceded the conference, and the awards that take place in November, are initiatives that are driven to create a positive change. From its simple beginnings, the Top Women series of conferences has evolved into a powerhouse of masterclasses, pitching dens, networking opportunities, and most notably, a platform for women to voice the issues that are most important to them. This remarkable gathering represents a powerful testament to the resilience, innovation, and leadership of women across the African continent – women who keep rising. I invite you to embark on a transformative journey, through this dynamic forum, to dive deep into crucial topics, panel discussions, and workshops that echo the aspirations and progress of women in Africa. From tracking progress on United Nations SDG 5 on achieving global gender equity by 2030 to unpacking the contributions of women in the care economy to discussing the transformative potential of inclusive digital technology in promoting equity and empowerment for the next generation of women leaders, this conference offers insights on how women can Rise Above The Noise. Standard Bank Top Women Conference 2023 | 09

Throughout the conference, we engage with diverse perspectives, fostering discussions that extend beyond the confines of traditional business and touch on broader societal themes, while also recognising the impactful role of Gen Z and the new crop of young women leaders who engage with the world so differently.

Their support and collaboration are vital in ensuring that women’s empowerment is holistic, creating an environment where every individual, regardless of gender, contributes to building an equitable world. We are delighted to have you join us for this journey of inspiration, education, and empowerment.

Our workshops, spanning topics from sustainable supply chains to agriculture’s pivotal role in Africa’s future, complement these conversations, providing a practical foundation for change. As we navigate these discussions and workshops, it is abundantly clear that women’s empowerment in Africa is not just a topic, it’s an imperative.

May the insights gained, and connections forged at the Standard Bank Top Women Conference inspire you to rise above the noise, never alone, but to also propel others and become a catalyst for positive change in Africa and beyond. Together, we can proactively create a future where the potential of every woman is fully realised, and the world benefits from our leadership and contributions. Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, emphasises the mindset that this conference seeks to instil:

It is about challenging norms, breaking barriers, and creating an inclusive environment where every woman can thrive and contribute her unique talents to society. Embracing diversity in both business and society is more than a trend; it is an avenue to harness a myriad of perspectives, fostering innovation and resilience. As we champion the advancement of women, it’s essential to acknowledge that men are not just spectators, but indispensable allies in this journey.

“Show her that she does not need to be liked by everyone. Tell her that if someone does not like her, there will be someone else who will. Teach her that she is not merely an object to be liked or disliked, she is also a subject who can like or dislike. n ”

N O T E

RALF FLETCHER CEO: Topco Media

I

t is my pleasure to welcome you to the highly anticipated 20th Annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards.

Over the past decade, Standard Bank has been an invaluable partner, supporting our two-day conference event. This collaboration has propelled us to extend the reach of the Top Women programme nationwide, fostering a trusted network of leading gender-empowered companies and women entrepreneurs. The conference is just the beginning; the awards ceremony is where we come together to celebrate the exceptional accomplishments of Top Women and the organisations that champion them. Together, we acknowledge and applaud outstanding leadership, innovation, vision, and commitment to advancing women's roles in our economy. We firmly believe that by empowering women, we contribute to accelerating Africa's growth. Over the years, we have united tens of thousands of remarkable women from various sectors across the nation, honouring exceptional candidates at our prestigious awards ceremony each year such as Thuli Madonsela, Zanele Dlamini Mbeki, Pam Golding, and Leila Fourie. This year, we continued our focus on addressing gender disparities and women's empowerment with our central theme: "Rise Above The Noise" Conversations revolved around insights from women who have risen above the noise, encompassing career strategies for women, reflections on responses to gender-based violence, and more, all within a global context. Through this theme, the conference aimed to energise the global gender empowerment movement

Standard Bank Top Women Awards 2023 | 81

by connecting women entrepreneurs, global icons, thought leaders, and experts to offer inspiration and actionable insights. We are thrilled to announce that the awards will be celebrated under the theme 'My Africa' this year. During the grand black-tie event, we will honour change-makers, with our wonderful MC, Carol Tshabalala, guiding us through the evening. You can look forward to engaging with top CEOs, directors, and entrepreneurs, as well as hearing from our remarkable keynote speakers. SIMONE COOPER Head, Business & Commercial Banking: Standard Bank South Africa

I

t is my great pleasure to introduce the 2023 Standard Bank Top Women Awards. This prestigious event celebrates the achievements of women in business and leadership across South Africa and Africa. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Top Women Awards, of which Standard Bank has been a proud partner with Topco Media for the past 12 years. Together, we have created and continue to drive a platform for diverse women leaders who aspire to lead and influence. From its simple beginnings, Top Women has evolved into a powerhouse of masterclasses, pitching dens, networking opportunities, and most notably, a platform for women to voice the issues that are most important to them. More than that, the EmpowerHER series of Top Women conferences and the Awards have developed from a gathering into a movement and lifestyle for positive change that has wholeheartedly been embraced by women across South Africa, and increasingly Africa. Over the past two decades, we have seen incredible progress in terms of gender equality in South Africa. However, there is still more work to be done. That is why it is so important to continue to recognise and celebrate the women who are breaking down barriers, rising above the noise and blazing new trails. This remarkable gathering represents a powerful testament to the resilience, innovation, and leadership of women across the African continent – women who keep rising. It is abundantly clear that women's empowerment in Africa is not just a topic, it’s an imperative.

Standard Bank Top Women Awards 2023 | 83

It is about challenging norms, and creating an inclusive environment where every woman can thrive and contribute her unique talents to society. The Standard Bank Top Women Awards are a platform to showcase the talent, resilience, and determination of women entrepreneurs, executives, and professionals. The finalists and winners of these awards are an inspiration to us all. They are role models for young women and girls everywhere, showing them that anything is possible. I would also like to thank the judges, sponsors, and partners of the awards. Your support is essential to the success of this event. Finally, I would like to congratulate all the finalists and winners of the 2023 Standard Bank Top Women Awards. Your achievements are truly inspiring. Thank you for being role models for us all. n
