‘I shall bestow upon thee a son who will be a sign of My Mercy and of My power, of My Grace and My Beneficence, and through him the message of Islam and Ahmadiyyat will be carried to the ends of the earth’, has been fulfilled with great glory. Today, hundreds of countries bear witness that the name of Islam reached them during the period of my Khilafat and it was during the period of my Khilafat that they heard the name of Ahmadiyyat.”

Brethren, I am a Reformer, not an innovator and, God forbid, I have not come to spread any innovation. I have come to proclaim the truth. I consider everything that finds no place in the Qur’an or Hadith, and is opposed to them, as heresy and negation of faith. But there are few who can reach the true meaning of the Divine Word and can comprehend its subtle mysteries. I have not added anything to, nor subtracted anything from, the faith. Brethren, my faith is the same as yours. I follow the same Noble Messengersaw whom you follow. The same Holy Qur’an is my guide, my beloved and my scripture, believing in which is incumbent upon you also.

From the Editor...

We are truly blessed to be members of the community which has accepted the advent of the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam AhmadPeace be upon him and recipients of the continual guiding light of Khilafat. The prophecies relating to the truth of the Promised Messiahas are irrefutable and clear and strengthen one’s faith. One of the many prophecies which proves the truthfulness of the Promised Messiah’sas claim, and thus the truthfulness of Islam, is the prophecy of the Promised Son.

In his Friday Sermon on 21st February 2020, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih VMay Allah be his Helper mentioned the Promised Messiah’sas explanation of the purpose of this prophecy:

“… So that truth may come with all its blessings and falsehood may disperse with all its ills.”

Hazooraba then continued to say:

“Each day of Hazrat Musleh Maud’sra 52-year khilafat is proof of the glory of this prophecy. Hazrat Mirza Musleh Maudra said, ‘At this point in time, where I give you glad tidings that God Almighty has fulflled the prophecy of the Promised Messiahas regarding the Musleh Maud, at the same time I would urge you all to be mindful of your responsibilities. The same responsibilities fall upon us as well. The primary responsibility lies on all of you who have attested to my announcement regarding Musleh Maud, that you ought to reform yourselves and be ready to offer every ounce of blood for the victory of Islam and Ahmadiyyat.’”

May Allah enable all of us to understand the true importance of this prophecy and fulfl our responsibilities as Ahmadi Muslims, making sacrifces for the victory of Islam and Ahmadiyyat Insha’Allah. Ameen.

THE OBJECTIVES OF FOUNDING THE COMMUNITY

O my friends, who have entered into a covenant with me, may God enable me and enable you to do such things as would please Him. Today, you are small in number and are being treated with contempt. You are passing through a great period of trial. According to His established scheme of things, it was decreed by God since time immemorial that efforts would be made from all directions that you should falter. You will be harassed in every way and you will have to bear with all manners of talk. Each one of those who will inflict misery upon you with his tongue or with his hand will do it in the belief that he is doing it in the service of Islam. So also will you be tried from Heaven so that you are tried in every possible way. Hearken ye, therefore, that for you the road to victory does not lie in the direction of dry logic which you may employ or that you should return mockery for mockery or that you should return abuse for abuse. If you adopt such a course your hearts will become hardened and you will be left with nothing but mere words which God Almighty loathes and looks down upon with aversion. So do not behave in a manner whereby you should become subject to two curses, the curse of men and the curse of God.

Migration to Yathrab

Migration to Yathrab

The Holy Prophetsaw was shown a vision that one day he would have to leave Makkah and migrate to another place, and along with this, he was also shown the place of his migration, which was a place of orchards and springs. The full interpretation of this vision had not yet revealed itself to the Holy Prophet saw, and prior to an explanation, a prophet can also be mistaken in his interpretation of a situation. It is due to this reason that the Holy Prophet saw said:

As such, when Islam began to find popularity in Yathrab, it was then that the Holy Prophetsaw understood that his place of migration would be Yathrab, and not Yam amah or Ḥajar. After the meeting with the An sar had taken place and they had returned after a Bai‘at was taken in a defensive treaty and pact, the Holy Prophet saw instructed the Muslims that, “All of those who are able, should migrate to Yathrab.” Therefore, after a short time period, despite the many obstructions setup by the Quraish, a majority of the Muslims migrated, and many homes in Makkah were abandoned. Finally, only the Holy Prophetsaw, Ḥazrat Abu Bakrra, Ḥazrat ‘Alira, their families, or those weak people who were unable to migrate, or those who the Quraish prohibited from leaving, were left behind. All of these Mu hajirin stayed as guests in various homes belonging to the An sar in Mad inah, and remained as such until the Holy Prophet saw himself arrived to Mad inah and separate homes could gradually be arranged for the Mu hajirin. The people of Mad inah, who are referred to as the ‘An sar’ on account of their helping and giving protection to the Mu hajirin of the Holy Prophet saw , welcomed the Mu hajirin very passionately and treated them greater than their own brothers. As such, when the Holy Prophet saw migrated to Madinah, he found all the Muhajirin full of praise for the An sar.

Now we come to that magnificent occurrence through which a new era began in Isl am, that is, the departure of the Holy Prophet saw from his beloved homeland and migration to Yathrab. The Islamic Year, known as Hijri, begun from this very revol utionary date. When all the Muslims had migrated to Mad inah, due to their previous actions, the Quraish suspected that the exile of all the Muslims in this way will surely bring about progress. In addition to this, they were also furious that this ‘prey’ h ad slipped their hands. Therefore, in their own manner, they thought that such a plan should be employed as will expunge this dispensation once and for all, so that retaliation to their cruelties no longer remains a possibility. The Holy Prophet saw was still in Makkah awaiting the permission of All ah the Exalted to migrate. The Makkans thought of this as a perfect opportunity, that all the Muslims have left and Mu ḥammadsaw is as if all alone without support. still in Makkah awaiting the permission of Allah the Exalted to migrate. The Makkans thought of this as a perfect opportunity, that all the Muslims have left and Muḥammadsaw is as if all alone without support. Therefore, they thought, such a plan should be devised as puts an end to his life. As such, with this thought, they gathered in their national place of consultation, that is, the Darun-Nadwah, and began to deliberate as to what should be done. There were approximately 100 men of the Quraish who partook in this deliberation and ‘Satan’ in the person of an aged man named Najdi Sheikh was also included. After the discussion on the current state of affairs, in the final stages of this deliberation, the following dialogue took place:

An Individual: Tie Muḥammad with iron chains and lock him up in a room that he may stay there until death overtakes him.

Sheikh Najdi: This idea is not appropriate, because when Muḥammad’s relatives and followers find out about this, they will surely attack and free him. Then this dispute will progress even further.

Another Individual: Exile Muḥammad. For if he is far from sight and leaves our city, then what do we care as to where he goes and what he does? At least our city will find deliverance from this disorder.

Sheikh Najdi: Have you not witnessed the sweet tongue, eloquent and enchanting speech of Muḥammad? If he leaves unharmed, then know well that some other tribe of Arabia will be lured into his deceit and will sweep forth against you and there shall be nothing you can do about it.

Hence, for some time, these mutual discussions continued and someone suggested one thing, while another suggested something else. Finally, Abu Jahl bin Hisham said:

Abu Jahl: My opinion is that one young man should be selected from every tribe of the Quraish each, and they should be given swords. Then these people should attack Muḥammad together as one man, and murder him. In this manner, his blood shall be distributed throughout all the tribes of the Quraish, and the Banu ‘Abdi Manaf will not have the courage to fight all the people. They will have no choice but to accept his blood-money. As such, we shall pay that.

Sheikh Najdi: If there is a proposal, it is of this man, for all else is rubbish. If you wish to do something, then do as this man proposes. Therefore, everyone agreed to this proposition.

something, then do as this man proposes.

Therefore, everyone agreed to this proposition.

The Holy Qur’an has alluded to their consultation in the following words:

The Holy Qur’an has alluded to their consultation in the following words:

Lajna Ima’illah -

Bringing a Moral and Spiritual Revolution

In an interview with German Press, Beloved Hazoor, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vmay Allah be his Helper so eloquently described, “my philosophy is, if women work outside the shade of men, they flourish better”1. Lajna Ima’illah is a beautiful testimony to these words of beloved Hazooraba. Lajna Ima’illah is active in so many aspects of our lives, whether it be in our religious education, our moral training, our tabligh efforts, our health and fitness or any other sphere. Indeed, today we know not of a time without the light of Lajna.

At the National Ijtema of Lajna Ima’illah UK 2022, beloved Hazooraba instructed that: “If our Ahmadi women can fulfil their duties and objectives, then Insha’Allah they can and will, bring about a great moral and spiritual revolution in their homes, in their cities, in their nations and the entire world”2 Thus, let us understand these objectives by revisiting the founding 17 principles of Lajna Ima’illah.

In 1922 Hazrat Musleh Maud, Khalifatul Masih IIra wrote the following exposition addressed to the ladies of Qadian on 15th December 1922.

“In order to fulfil the aim and objective of the purpose of our creation, the efforts of women are as necessary as that of men. In my opinion, the perception of what Islam expects of women has not dawned upon them and how their lives should be spent whereby they can, attaining the pleasure of God, become the inheritors of the bounties of Allah Almighty, not only in the hereafter but in this world as well.

“If one reflects, it will dawn upon them that most women do not have an understanding of whether they are capable of other work aside from daily chores.

“The enmity for Islam that is instilled in children through women (mothers) in anti-Islam circles can be countered only through our women. Further, if a spirit of sacrifice can be created in children, then that can also only occur through mothers. Thus, besides their own spiritual and academic progress, the progress of the future Jama’at is mostly dependent upon the efforts of women, since the influence which children retain when grown is not as deep as is retainable in childhood. Similarly, the reformation of women can also occur through women.

“Bearing these matters in mind, I invite those sisters who second this idea and admit the need of the following matters to initiate work together, in order to fulfil these objectives. If you also agree upon the following matters, please notify me so that this work begins as soon as possible:

1. It is necessary for ladies to strive together to increase their knowledge and to relay their gained knowledge to others

2. For this, an organisation requires establishing so that this work is formally continued

3. There is a need for some rules to run this organisation, the adherence of which should be compulsory on every member

Maryam | 10

4. There is a need for the rules and regulations to be in accordance with the Islam presented by the Ahmadiyya Jama’at and which aid in its progress and consolidation

5. There is a need for essays to be read out in gatherings regarding various topics in Islam, especially contemporary issues. They should be written by the members of the organisation themselves so that in this way, the faculty for the usage of knowledge can be fostered

6. There is a need for people already acquainted with Islam to be brought forth for lectures on such topics, which the organisation deems necessary for the objective of increasing knowledge

7. In order to maintain a spirit of unity within the Jama’at, all actions are required to occur in accordance to the prepared scheme of whoever the Khalifa of the time may be, bearing in mind its progress

8. It is essential that you strive and offer any sacrifice for unity of the Jama’at in accord with the Qur’an, Hadith and sayings of the Promised Messiahas is incumbent upon every Muslim

9. It is necessary for you to always be attentive towards reforming your morals and spirituality and for you not to confine your attention to mere eating, drinking and wearing clothes. For this, one should assist the other as fully as possible and should reflect and act on such means

10. It is important that you especially comprehend your responsibility to the moral upbringing of children. Instead of making them ignorant of religion, discontented and lazy, they should be made active, alert and tolerant to adversity. Acquaint them with themes of religion, to whatever extent you have knowledge of and create in them the spirit of love and obedience to God, the Holy Prophetsaw and Promised Messiahas. Develop in them a passion to spend their lives for the sake of Islam and in accordance to its motive. For this reason, reflect over proposals to accomplish this task and implement them

11. It is necessary to overlook one another’s faults when working together and strive for reformation with patience and resolve rather than increasing discord by anger and indignation

12. As people laugh and mock upon every task when it is initiated, it is necessary not to give laughing and mockery of people any value and for sisters to gain the lesson of enduring, with courage and resolve, various kinds of scorns and taunts or ridicule by the public. Further, the ability to give birth to such a strength should be acquired beforehand so that other sisters may divert their attention towards this task, upon observing this example

13. It is important that in order to strengthen this concept and for it to eternally endure, there should be likeminded people to yourselves. And this task can only proceed when every sister who participated in this gathering regards it her duty to also make other sisters likeminded as her

14. It is necessary that to save this work from ruin, only those sisters should be made members of the organisation who fully agree with these ideas. If, God forbid, anybody does not remain in agreement at any time, they should happily separate from the organisation, otherwise, they should be separated

15. As the Jama’at is not the name of any specific group and young, old, poor and rich all constitute of the Jama’at, it is necessary for there not to be any distinction in this organisation between the poor and affluent. Rather, it should be striven to create love and equality in both poor and rich and to eliminate from the hearts disdain to one another and a tendency of haughtiness because in spite of the distinction of ranks, all men are in actuality brothers and all women, sisters

11 | Maryam

16. It is necessary to propose some methods for practically serving Islam and to help your poor brothers and sisters; and then to act upon them

17. As all help, success and blessings come from Allah Almighty, it is important to supplicate and to encourage others to pray, ‘Let those objectives be revealed to us which He [God] had in view in our creation. Inform us of the best means to fulfil those purposes and then, enable us to fulfil those means in the best manner that led to a blessed end. Guide the forthcoming generations also by your grace and make this mission eternally last, according to Your will, until this world comes to an end’

“If you agree with these ideas and are prepared to act upon the rules that are being passed having gone through the Anjuman (and will be so in future), please sign this paper. Having taken separate signatures, oaths shall be taken from every sister in relation to these rules.”3

Upon this preliminary proposal, 14 ladies of Qadian signed. Today, as we celebrate 100 years since the establishment of Lajna Ima’illah, it is an organisation spread worldwide with a membership of greater than 12,000 in the UK alone. Whilst our hearts are filled with gratitude to Allah Almighty for all that he has enabled Lajna to achieve, each of must look within ourselves and ask where do we stand in fulfilling these noble objectives of Lajna Ima’illah? Amongst the qualities that beloved Hazooraba highlighted for Waqfe Nau to adopt in order that they may be truly special was, “if they regularly take part in the programs of the auxiliary organizations and the Jama’at more than others, then, they will be special.”4 Thus as Waaqifaat-e-Nau we must be at the forefront of Lajna Ima’illah and we can only do so if we understand its purpose and objective and make it our own, Insha’Allah

On 25th December 2022, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul MasihVaba concluded Jalsa Salana Qadian with an inspirational address, in which he also mentioned the 100 years of Lajna Imaillah.

“Today Lajna Imaillah has reached the hundred-year mark since the inception of their organisation. Lajna must remember that they ought to evaluate how they have spiritually reformed themselves in the past hundred years and whether they have made themselves worthy of being able to flfl the obligations of taking the Bai’at. To what etent have they endeavoured to do so and to what etent have they attached their progenies with the oath of allegiance to the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him)? If we have brought up our children in line with this objective, then certainly the Lajna Imaillah are gratefl servants of Allah the Almighty. We must assess ourselves with this objective in mind today. Wherever there is any weakness that has occurred, then Lajna Imaillah members must try to pledge with sincere fortitude that they shall enter their new century with the pledge to make their fture progeny into such people who flfl the obligations of taking the Bai’at.”

The Coming of the

For over 1400 years, people have been waiting for a messiah to reform the people of the latter days. Many of the prophets had prophesised that after them, when the followers of religion start to decline and morality begins disappearing, a messiah or reformer will be sent to the world to revive the followers and unite the world under one banner. This coming of the messiah is foretold in the teachings of Islam and also in many other religions, but are all these religions referring to the same messiah? This article aims to shed some light on this topic and show the similarities between the messiah that has been foretold in many religions and the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas.

Awaiting Prophet Jesus as

Let us first look at mainstream Islam and Christianity; both are awaiting the second coming of Prophet Jesusas. Mainstream Muslims believe that Jesusas is alive in heaven, and will return to reform the Muslims. Similarly, Christians also believe that he will come down from Heaven in bodily form. We know from the Holy Qur’an that Jesusas died a normal death. In chapter 3, verse 145 it states:

“And Muhammad is only a Messenger. Verily, all Messengers have passed away before him.”1

So how will Jesusas come back to earth? Jesusas stated that a second coming of someone who has passed away should be understood metaphorically and not literally. The person will return in spirit and not in the same bodily form. Jesusas compared John the Baptist to Elijah, who the Jews were expecting before the advent of their Messiah:

“For all the Prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.”2

Thus the messiah will arrive; he will not be Jesusas, but will have the characteristics of him. Bukhari also shows us that when the messiah will come, he will be like Jesusas, but not in bodily form:

“By the One who owns my soul, it is nigh, of a certainty, that the son of Mary will appear among you. He will be a judge, he will be just; so he will break the cross and kill the swine; and he will stop war.”3

If Jesusas is to come back to earth as the messiah, why would he break the cross, a symbol used throughout Christianity? The answer is very simple; the messiah will have the characteristics of Jesusas only, and nothing more. He will refute the teaching that Jesusas died on the cross, he will teach against such behaviours and morals that can be likened to swine, and he will bring a message of peace and teach through the pen.

Astronomical signs

Various astronomical signs have been prophesised in Islam, Christianity and Sikhism to mark the arrival of the messiah, including eclipses of the sun and the moon. In the Holy Bible, Jesusas speaks about the time when the messiah will appear:

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.”4

In Islam, the prophecy regarding eclipses is given in the following Hadith:

For our Mahdi (Spiritual Reformer) there are two Signs which have never occurred before since the creation of the heavens and the earth, namely, the moon will be eclipsed on the first night in Ramadhan (i.e., on the first of the nights on which a lunar eclipse can occur) and the Sun will be eclipsed on the middle day of Ramadhan (i.e., on the middle day on which a solar eclipse can occur) and these Signs have not happened since the creation of the heavens and the earth.5

Likewise, in the Sri Guru Garanth Sahib, it states:

“When Maharaj will come as Nahkalank, the sun and the moon will be his helpers.”6

Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas was born in the Sikh Empire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He came as Nahkalank (reformer), and indeed the sun and the moon were his helpers in his claim. From all three religions it is clear that eclipses of the sun and the moon will take place and there will be many astronomical events to mark the coming of the messiah.

In the 19th Century, the earth saw many astronomical events 7: Bielids comet, followed by meteor showers, Leonid comet, the Great comet of 1882, Haley’s comet, Holmes comet, to name a few. Further to this, the world saw the above prophecy of the eclipse fulfilled. On 21st March 1894, (13th day of Ramadhan) the eclipse of the moon took place in the eastern Hemisphere. On 6th April 1894, (28th day of Ramadan), an eclipse of the sun occurred for two hours.8 This phenomenon was prophesised in both Christianity as well as Islam, and took place in 1894; four years after Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas claimed to be the Promised Messiah, thus proving his claim to be true.

WAR

Both Islamic and Biblical scripts predict of wars and destruction, again to be a sign of the coming of the awaited messiah.

Jesusas states that people will claim to be the messiah, but people should only believe this person when this situation arises:

“Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”9

During the 19th Century, Mahdi of Sudan, Alexander Dowie of Zion, IL U.S.A, Joseph Smith of the Mormon Church, Ali Muhammad Bab/ Bahaullah of Bahai faith and Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas had all claimed to be a prophet or messiah10; thus proving what Jesusas had said. But how are we to decipher who is true?

Jesusas says about his second coming to his disciples:

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars”11

Biblical scripts therefore state that his people should only believe the one claiming to be the messiah when there will be many wars, and by “rumours”, we can deduce that this means when the claimant predicts wars.

During the time of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas there were no less than 12 wars12:

1. The war between China and England, terminated in the loss of Hong Kong to England and a treaty was signed in 1842

2. The Crimean War 1854

3. The Indian Mutiny 1857

4. France and Italy against Australia in 1859

17 | Maryam

5. Civil war of United States 1861 to 1865

6. Franco Prussian War 1870 to 1871

7. Russian Turkey War 1877 to 1878

8. China and Japan 1890 to 1900

9. Turkey and Greece 1890 to 1900.

10. Spain and America 1890 to 1900

11. Invasion of China 1890 to 1900

12. The Boer War 1890 to 1902

13. The war of 1812 U.S.A. Against Canada and Britain

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas also prophesised the coming of World War 1. In April 1905, he received the prophecy:

‘[…] A calamity (lit. earthquake) resembling Doomsday. Save your lives. Indeed, Allah is with the pious. My Grace has drawn close to you. Truth has come and falsehood has vanished.’13

Explaining this he stated:

“[I]t would be more terrible than the ones before. It would be awful in its intensity. Were I not forced to disclose all this out of my deep sympathy for my fellow beings I would not have mentioned it.… Hearken! I have warned you. The earth listens as does the heavens that whoever, departing from righteousness, is inclined towards mischief and pollutes the earth with his viciousness will be seized. God Almighty warns that His wrath is about to descend upon the earth, for the earth is filled with sin and vice. Then arise and be warned that the end is near as had been foretold by the previous prophets. I call Him to witness Who has sent me that all this is from Him and not from me. Would that my warnings were viewed in good faith. Would that I were not treated as a liar, so that the world would escape ruin. … Otherwise, the day is approaching which will turn men mad. The unfortunate fool will say: These are all lies. Alas! Why is he in such deep sleep when the sun is about to rise?”14

The prophecy was published in many newspapers, and also translated and sent to many countries around the world. These ‘rumours’ became a reality in 1914, just 9 years after the prophecy was received when World War 1 started. This was a great sign for the truth of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas and his claim to be the Promised Messiahas

THE PROMISED Messiah ’ s location

Islam, Christianity and Sikhism all point to the fact that the messiah will come from the east. Jesusas states:

“For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be”15

Jesus was in Jerusalem when he mentioned this prophecy. Qadian, where Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas was born, is east of Jerusalem. The Bible gives special significance to the east in many places.16

In Janam Sakhi (pages 234, 251 and 452), Guru Nanak prophesised that the messiah would be a Muslim, and that he would come from near Batala in the district of Gurdaspur and that he would be from the Mogul Tribe.17

The Holy Qur’an also mentions that the messiah will come from the east. In chapter 62, verse 4 it states:

“And among others from among them who have not yet joined them. He is the Mighty, the Wise.”

A relation is narrated in Bukhari explaining this verse: A companion of the Holy Prophetsaw relates: “One day we were sitting with the Holy Prophetsaw when this chapter was revealed. I enquired from Muhammadsaw Whom are the people to whom the words ‘and among others of them who have yet joined them’ refer? Sulman, a Persian was sitting among us. The Holy Prophetsaw put his hand on Sulman and said. If faith were to go up to the Pleiades, a man from among these would surely find it.”18

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas was of Persian decent, born in Qadian which is east of Jerusalem. Qadian is also not far from Batala (as was prophesised by Guru Nanak). Heas truly brought Islam back when its teaching had vanished into the heavens.

A man named Ahmad

The Holy Qur’an clearly shows that the messiah will come whose name will be Ahmad. His claim will be rejected by many but Allah will make his message victorious. In chapter 61, verses 7-10 it states:

“And remember when Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘O children of Israel, surely I am Allah’s Messenger unto you, fulfilling that which is before me of the Torah, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger who will come after me. His name will be Ahmad.’ And when he came to them with clear proofs, they said, ‘This is clear enchantment.’ But who could do greater wrong than one who forges the lie against Allah while he is called to Islam? Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with the breath of their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, even if the disbelievers hate it. He it is Who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the Religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religions, even if those who associate partners with God hate it.”

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas summarises these prophecies beautifully:

“In my age only, in the month of Ramadan, eclipses of the sun and the moon occurred; in my age only, in accordance with the authentic sayings of the Holy Prophetsaw and the Holy Qur’an and earlier Books, there was the plague all over the country, and in my age only, a new mode of transport, namely railways came into existence and in my age only, as per prophecies, terrible earthquakes came. Does not then righteousness demand that one should not be bold in denying me? Look! I swear by Almighty God and say that thousands of signs for establishing my truth have been manifested, are being manifested and will be manifested. If this were a man’s plan, never would he have enjoyed such support and help.”19

O Dear Friends! Do Not Forget Your Afterlife…

Selected translated verses from the Urdu poem titled “MahmoodkiAmeen” , written on 7 June 1897 by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas

O dear friends! Do not forget your afterlife–Take some provisions for the way; put in some work as well; The world is a place to perish–remove it from the heart; Pray bless this day; Holy is He Who watches over me.

Attach not your heart with it–estrange your heart from it; Remove your affection for it; in fact move far away from it; O friends! It is a serpent–pray save your life from it; Pray bless this day; Holy is He Who watches over me.

Quran, the Book of the Gracious, it shows the way to gnosis; Those who read it, upon them is the grace of God; (85) May God’s blessing be on those who put their faith in it; Pray bless this day; Holy is He Who watches over me.

This is a spring of guidance–whoever is blessed with it; These talks are about God that lead to sainthood; It illumines the heart and permeates it fully; Pray bless this day; Holy is He Who watches over me.

Pray heed the Quran and maintain pure beliefs; Pray think of the afterlife–keep provisions with you; This is the remedy, dear–stay true and righteous; Pray bless this day; Holy is He Who watches over me. (90)

On February 13th, 1835, in the small Indian village of Qadian, a man was born to a well-known and noble family. His name was Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas. At the age of forty he received a revelation from Allah and in 1891 A.D. he claimed to be the Promised Messiah.

Allah had told Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas that it was he, whose coming and appearance was predicted by the prophets of great religions.

Allah had shown him through revelations that Jesusas had passed away and would not be physically coming back. However, Allah had said He would send someone like Jesusas, who would also have the same purpose as Jesusas of being a prophet, and this person was Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas himself.

The Promised Messiahas also said that he was a follower of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw, and his purpose was to spread the Holy Prophet’ssaw message of Islam to the whole world.

Making and Being a

good friend

Waqifeen-e-Nau children from Texas, USA were blessed to have an inperson meeting with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vmay Allah be his Helper at the Bait-ul-Ikram Mosque on 5th October 2022.

A Waqifa-e-Nau asked for Hazoor ’ saba advice on making and being a good friend. Hazooraba said:

You are an Ahmadi girl […] you know the good and bad. You know your duties. You know what Allah has commanded. You know the two main objectives of a human being for which the Promised Messiahas came, that is […] to bring human beings closer to their Creator and, secondly, to discharge their duties towards their fellow beings. If you are doing all these things, you are a good girl, a good Ahmadi Muslim woman. And if you have these qualities, then always, when you are choosing your friend, you will try to choose those girls who are of this nature or who are of good nature. You will never ever try to make friends with bad girls. And the same thing will apply when you have all these qualities, then people will also consider you a good friend.

WAQF IN THE FIELD: BECOMING A CLINICAL RESEARCHER

As a child I had a keen interest in science. ‘What would you like to become when you grow up?’ is a question that almost every child is frequently asked. For myself, I’d always desired to work in medicine. My name is Malahat Khaula Safeer, and Alhamdolillah I am a Waqifa-e-Nau. My first ten years of life were spent in Karachi, Pakistan. In Karachi, we used to hold regular Waqfe Nau classes and a variety of events in which it was stressed that all Waaqifaat-e-Nau should serve as role models for others. The purpose of Waqf was repeatedly shared with us. I recall the Ameer Sahib of Karachi telling us to constantly pray for ourselves and pray to Allah to lead us to the path of the pious and righteous people. Pray that Allah, the Almighty, may provide you the ability to serve the Jama’at and comprehend the significance of your Waqf. All Waqfe Nau meetings concluded with a reminder to always send letters to our beloved Khalifa, Hazrat Mirza Masroor AhmadMay Allah be his Helper, and ask for his guidance.

How I ended up in my current field?

At the age of 11, I moved to Toronto, Canada. I recall being advised as a child to always seek Hazoor’saba advice about our next steps as a Waqf and choose a profession that would allow us to serve the Jama’at. I distinctly remember that even though I was not concentrating on any one topic, I decided to keep all of the science courses in high school. By the time I was in my senior year of high school, I

Malahat Khaula Safeer
Maryam | 26

had decided that physics and chemistry were not the fields I wanted to pursue. I focused my attention on biology. I completed my undergraduate degree in Bachelors of Science in Biology. To be honest, I was unsure about my plans for a career in medicine even after I graduated. I requested guidance from Hazooraba in several letters. From a very young age, I was taught انعطاو انعمس (We hear, and we obey), I thus wished to just seek Hazoor’saba guidance. In response to one of my letters, Hazooraba replied, ‘focus in the field of research.’ I combed through many research universities in quest of the ideal programme that would provide me the most exposure to clinical research. I then went on to further pursuing a one-year post-graduate Clinical Research certificate to become a certified Clinical Research Associate. This one-year certificate program focused primarily on teaching the principles of research design, analysis, and quality assurance necessary for day-to-day operations in the clinical research industry. Additionally, the course allowed me the opportunity to review clinical papers from the pharmaceutical, medical device, and natural health product industries, which provided the competitive edge needed in this dynamic field. With regards to Waqfe Nau pursuing careers in research, Hazooraba has said,

‘Some Waqifeen-e-Nau have more of an interest in particular fields, and when they ask me, taking into account their interest, I allow them to study [in that particular field]. But here I wish to inform students that they should pursue various fields of scientific research’. (The Essence of Waqf-e-Nau, page 20)

Given my desire to advance my education and the program’s strong emphasis on population and public health approaches to disease management and health improvement, I was drawn to the Masters in International Public Health program. The course covered the balance between disease control and health promotion for cancer, as well as determinants of health and quality of life. I once again turned to my beloved Khalifa for guidance, and Hazooraba graciously directed me and encouraged me to do my Masters. I strongly believe that our best interests are at the core of his decisions. By the Grace of Allah and with the prayers of our beloved Khalifa, I was accepted into my chosen course at university. I was fortunate to complete the program virtually while working in the clinical

research field. I’m certain and convinced that the words of the Khalifa of the time include a wealth of blessings, and I’ll gladly carry out Hazoor’saba commands, Insha’Allah

Once Hazooraba was asked in a virtual class with Waqifeen-e-Nau about his advice for those studying sciences such as physics, biology and chemistry and whether they should focus more on research or pursue teaching careers. Hazooraba replied,

‘We need people in all fields. Ahmadi Muslim scholars should also go into research. Those studying physics in particular should do so. Those studying biology will go into biomedical sciences and then they can go into research… First preference should be research and second preference should be teaching.’ (https://www.pressahmadiyya. com/press-releases/2021/03/members-of-waqf-e-nau-in-the-uk-have-honour-of-avirtual-meeting-with-the-head-of-the-ahmadiyya-muslim-community/)

The move to the UK and my continued study

When I got married and relocated to the UK in 2015, I was halfway through my Masters’ program. Because my husband is a Waqfe Zindagi, in our first Mulaqat with Hazooraba, I shyly asked Hazooraba whether I could continue my studies. This time I was sitting in front of my beloved Khalifa, I remember, Hazooraba was quite interested in hearing about my educational background, career history, and what I am currently studying. I must say, Hazooraba wants Waaqifaat-e-Nau to excel in their field. Hazooraba lovingly said ‘you must complete your studies’. I was hesitant, as we didn’t have funds to pay the fees. I recall, Hazooraba said to write the cost to me and I will see. After our Mulaqat, I wrote a letter to Hazooraba providing details of the remaining fees. A few days later, I received a letter from the Markaz informing me that Hazooraba had generously granted my request to finish my studies and that the Jama’at would provide the financing necessary to pay the fees. I was overjoyed, as you may imagine. This is purely the blessings of Khilafat and Hazoor’saba love for his Jama’at and all Waqifeen-e-Nau in particular.

Soon after, I was hired to work in gynae-oncology clinical trials at the leading hospital in London. Since I began working in cancer research about ten years ago, it has been such a fulfilling experience to be able to make a difference in this field.

In 2018, I was given an excellence award by my beloved Hazooraba at Jalsa Salana UK in 2018, Alhamdolillah. It was one of the most joyful moments I’ve ever experienced. When I was called to the stage, I greeted Hazooraba with “Assalamu Alaikum,” and Hazooraba smiled. I strongly believe that there is no life without Khalifat. He is the guiding light in this world.

On 7th April 2019 Hazooraba delivered an address at the National Waqfe Nau Ijtema on Fulfilling the Pledge of Waqf and reminded us that:

‘…it is vitally important that those who are working privately must set aside as much time as possible for the service of their religion and should always keep in mind that they are Waqfe Nau.’

Maryam | 28

While working, I always make sure that I am engaged in Jama’at activities and serve in any way possible. Currently, I am serving as local Secretary Tarbiyyat. Additionally, I am a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Research Association (AMRA), in which I have held various positions and roles. We host a number of events every year to support research initiatives. The purpose of the Association is to advance natural and social scientific learning with a view to serving God and His creation.

Tarbiyyat of Waqfe Nau

Most recently, on August 28th, 2022, we were blessed to have a family Mulaqat with Hazooraba, and once again Hazooraba inquired about my job and the specifics of it. Despite Hazoor’saba desire for Waaqifaat-e-Nau to succeed in their respective fields of work, he will always remind us that our first priority is our home and our children. I have two daughters, Alhamdolillah. Hazooraba explicitly made it very clear to me that “their upbringing is my first priority and only if I can manage to raise children according to Islamic teachings and work at the same time, then by all means I can work”. He said that three times during the Mulaqat. Both my daughters are also part of the blessed scheme of Waqfe Nau as well. This is the affection that our beloved Khalifa has for the children of Jama’at, especially for Waqfe Nau. He truly cares about our children and wants to ensure they have a good upbringing from an early age.

My love and devotion for my beloved Khalifa cannot possibly be justified in this article. My husband, my children, and I are Waqfe Nau. We pray that, may Allah always enable us to say ‘Labaik’ to the call of our Imam. May Allah fulfil all of Hazoor’saba prayers in favour of Waqfe Nau, Ameen.

signs mentioned in the Prophecy of Hazrat Musleh Maud

(May Allah be pleased with him)

On 20th February 1886, a leaflet was published in which Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiahas, expressed that Allah the Almighty vouchsafed a sign during his time of isolation that a child would be born to him who would serve Islam, be pious and righteous and would have many other qualities.

In this leaflet 52 signs were stated that God had foretold about the life of this promised son. Needless to say that such a prophecy being fulfilled would support the truthfulness of the Promised Messiahas. However just as the purpose of his advent was to prove the truth of Islam and to establish the greatness of the Holy Prophetsaw, the Promised Messiahas did not attribute this prophecy to his own truth, but said:

“Allah the Exalted has manifested this sign to demonstrate the truthfulness and greatness of the Holy Prophetsaw. This sign is in fact hundreds of times superior and more potent and majestic and glorious than the sign of bringing a dead person back to life. Bringing a dead person back to life only entails calling a spirit back for a short while”. (Majmu’ah Ishtiharat, Vol.1, p. 99)

Each characteristic of the prophecy is in essence a proof of the truth of Islam, in that the individual in question—'Musleh Maud’—would prove to be a champion of Islam. The prophecy not only foretold the birth of a son, but also stated that he would have a long life. If this prophecy is pondered over objectively, there remains no doubt in it being a Divine sign.

Opponents would mock the Promised Messiahas, especially due to the fact that before the birth of Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra, every child would pass away at a young age. However the graciousness of God is such that they were proved completely wrong and the world was able to witness the truth of this prophecy which was illuminated through the life of Hazrat Musleh Maudra. Some parts of the prophecy were fulfilled in his life before his appointment as the second successor of the Ahmadiyya Jama’at, while others were fulfilled during his Khilafat, which spanned a period of 52 years.

The
Maryam | 30

We are reminded and guided through Khilafat about understanding the depth of this prophecy and the ways in which it was all fulfilled. Our beloved Imam, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaba reminds us of this historical and religiously inspiring manifestation enabling us to never lose touch from the blessings and truthfulness that God has bestowed upon this Jama’at.

What were those 52 qualities mentioned in the prophecy? I will now present them to you as they were stated in the leaflet by the Promised Messiahas as well as briefly explaining some of the prophecies as mentioned by our beloved Hazuraba in some of his Friday sermons.

The prophecy begins with the words:

“I confer upon thee a Sign of My mercy according to thy supplications. I have heard thy entreaties and have honoured thy prayers with My acceptance through My mercy and have blessed this thy journey. A sign of power, mercy, nearness to Me is bestowed on thee. A Sign of grace and beneficence is awarded to thee and thou art granted the key of success and victory. Peace on thee, O victorious one. Thus does God speak so that those who desire life may be rescued from the grip of death and those who are buried in the graves may emerge therefrom and so that the superiority of Islam and the dignity of God’s word may become manifest unto the people and so that the truth may arrive with all its blessings and falsehood may depart with all its ills, and so that people may understand that I am the Lord of Power, I do whatever I will, and so that they may believe that I am with thee, and so that those who do not believe in God and deny and reject His religion and His Book and His Holy Messenger Muhammad, the chosen one [on whom be peace] may be confronted with a clear sign and the way of the guilty ones may become manifest. Rejoice, therefore, that a handsome and pure boy will be bestowed on thee. Thou wilt receive a bright youth who will be of thy seed and will be of thy progeny. A handsome and pure boy will come as your guest. His name is Emmanuel and Bashir. He has been invested with a holy spirit and he will be free from all impurity. He is the light of Allah. Blessed is he who comes from heaven. He shall be accompanied by grace (Fazl) which shall arrive with him.”

The Promised Messiahas explained that the word “guest” in the prophecy was for the first Bashir who soon departed from this world. The reference that he would be “free from all impurity” also signifies his childhood death. These phrases were all meant for Bashir, the first son that was born to the Promised Messiahas before Hazrat Musleh Maudra. The indication of the “promised son” in the prophecy begins with the words “He will be accompanied by grace which shall arrive with him”.

“He will be characterised with grandeur, greatness and wealth. He will come into the world and will heal many of their disorder through his Messianic qualities and through the blessings of the Holy Spirit.”

Hazrat Musleh Maudra said he saw in a vision that the following phrase was made to issue forth from his tongue, “Ana al-masihul maudo, maseelohoo wa khalifatoh." (I am the Promised Messiah, his like and his Successor). It felt very strange to him even in the dream to have these words be issued from his mouth but afterwards some friends drew his attention to the fact that the mention of being a “messianic soul” was found in the announcement of the Promised Messiahas about the promised son.

He also saw in a dream that he was having many idols broken. He said this indicated healing ills through the blessings of the Holy Spirit. The “Holy Spirit” signifies the spirit of Unity of God and the truth is that in reality, the only thing worthy of mention is the Being of God Himself, and all other things are simply reflections and shadows. So only by the spirit of the Unity of God would he, by its blessings, purify many of their ills.

Majesty. He will be extremely intelligent and understanding and will be meek of heart and will be filled with secular and spiritual knowledge.”

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh said that even if just one aspect of the grand prophecy is taken, for example “[He] will be filled with secular and spiritual knowledge”, it is so extensive that one could not encompass it, no matter how much is said on it. One glance at his works show us secular, as well as spiritual knowledge and the beauty of it all is that each time he wrote a book or a journal, everyone said that one could not write any better! Each time he gave counsel in politics or leadership, great minds were compelled to acknowledge his matchless ability.

Hazrat Musleh Maudra wrote and indeed spoke on a whole range of subjects, from religious and spiritual, to economics and impressed everyone with the breadth of his knowledge. He was Musleh Maud and God had sent him to reform mankind. In the 52-year era of his Khilafat, apart from his Friday sermons, he wrote numerous books and delivered countless addresses. All these make up a great scholarly and spiritual treasure.

One specific and most important example is his work on Tafsir-e-Kabir, which is his translation and commentary of the Holy Qur’an. Hazrat Musleh Maudra found meanings for verses of the Holy Qur’an that famous commentators could not find any commentary for, stating that there was no need to delve into their meanings. For instance, he gave detailed explanations about Qur’anic abbreviations that others could not find.

The amazing works of Hazrat Musleh Maudra and the fact that this prophecy was fulfilled only through the Grace of God, is further established through the fact that growing up, Hazrat Musleh Maudra suffered from many health conditions, which affected his ability to study in school. This aspect was anticipated to be the pinnacle part of Hazrat Musleh Maud’sra life, as the truth of the claim of him being the Promised Son depended on the success of his knowledge. However, despite the challenges and complications, the Promised Messiahas did not go out of his way to enable his son to seek the most expensive education or any special arrangements for his health and success. He left it to Allah Almighty to prove this prophecy to be true in all the promised qualities. Due to a chronic eye condition, he was unable to attend school regularly and so could only achieve below satisfactory marks. Not once did the Promised Messiahas express any pressure or anxiety towards this matter. True to his faith in God, these health problems never hindered Hazrat Musleh Maud’sra ability to give such incredible and inspiring lectures as well as his literature.

Regarding this part of the prophecy, Hazrat Musleh Maudra says:

“What this means is that he [the Musleh Maud] would not go and learn secular knowledge, but rather he would be taught such knowledge by God Almighty. It needs to be remembered here that it is not said here that he would be an expert in secular knowledge, but the words are ‘he will be filled with secular knowledge.’ What this means is that some other power would teach him this secular knowledge. His own effort and concentration and struggle would not have anything to do with it. Here, secular knowledge does not mean mathematics and science etc. because it is said here that he would be ‘filled’ with such knowledge, which indicates that he would be taught these fields of knowledge by God Almighty. And when it is said that God Almighty would teach, then it is not meant that God Almighty will teach maths, science and geography etc. but rather what is taught by God Almighty has to do with knowledge of faith and of the Holy Qur’an. The manner in which I was taught speaks for itself, in that there was no human endeavor in it. From among my teachers, some are alive and some have passed away and the greatest favour upon me from among them all is that of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira”.

“He will convert three into four.”

Maryam | 32

Explaining this part of the prophecy, Hazrat Musleh Maudra says that it was incorrect that this did not fit upon him. He was the one who made three into four in many ways.

Firstly, before him, Mirza Sultan Ahmad Sahib, Mirza Fazal Ahmad Sahib and Bashir Awwal [the First] were born and he was the fourth.

Secondly, after him, three sons were born to the Promised Messiahas and in this way he made those three into four. Mirza Mubarak Ahmad, Mirza Shareef Ahmad and Mirza Bashir Ahmad and the fourth being myself.

Thirdly, he was able to make three into four from among the surviving progeny of the Promised Messiahas. Only three brothers—himself, Mirza Bashir Ahmad Sahib and Mirza Sharif Ahmad Sahib—accepted Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas as the Promised Messiah. Mirza Sultan Ahmad Sahib was not among his spiritual progeny. He had great faith in Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira, but despite this in his period of Khilafat he did not accept Ahmadiyyat. It did however appear from a vision of the Promised Messiahas that Allah the Exalted had destined guidance for him. But he did not embrace Ahmadiyyat in the time of the Promised Messiahas or the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira. When the time of Hazrat Musleh Maudra came, Allah the Exalted, arranged that he entered the fold of Ahmadiyyat through this Khilafat.

Another example was that, as stated by Hazrat Musleh Maudra, he was born in the fourth year of the prophecy. The prophecy was made by the Promised Messiahas in 1886 and he was born in 1889. Thus 1886, was one, 1887 two, 1888 three and 1889, four. Thus in the prophecy it was also suggested that his birth would occur in the fourth year of the prophecy and thus, in this way also, he was the one to make three into four.

“It is Monday, a blessed Monday. Son, delight of heart, high-ranking, noble; a manifestation of the First and the Last, a manifestation of the True and the High; as if Allah has descended from heaven. His advent will be greatly blessed and will be a source of manifestation of Divine Majesty.”

“It is Monday, a blessed Monday” may have other meanings and significance but Hazrat Musleh Maudra felt that Monday is the third day of the week and in spiritual movements, prophets of God and their successors (Khulafa) have their own eras. A prophet's time is an era in its own right just as a Khalifa’s time is an era in its own right. In the current age, the first era was of the Promised Messiah’sas, the second era was of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira while the third era was that of Hazrat Musleh Maudra. Another revelation of the Promised Messiahas “Fazl-e-Umer” (a name given to his yet-to-be-born son) corroborated this. Similarly, Hazrat Umar’sra era was the third in that age.

“It is Monday, a blessed Monday” does not signify any special or blessed day, rather, it means that he will be third among people who will be raised to serve faith in this mission. Hazrat Musleh Maudra said that this revelation was also fulfilled in his person in a way which was out of his hands. He started the scheme of Tahrik-e-Jadid in 1934 in response to a situation that was not at all in his control. Due to the government of the day planning to take harsh steps towards the Jama’at and the wicked plotting of the Ahrar Movement, God inclined his heart to initiate the scheme of Tahrik-e-Jadid in 1934 and he planned its first phase to last ten years. He said that after every sacrifice, there was time for Eid (felicitation). Thus at the end of the ten-year phase of Tahrik-e-Jadid would be a year of felicitation and that year was to begin on a Monday. Thus, he explained that God informed through these words that at a time when Islam would be in a weak state, an organisation for its propagation would be established and the successful conclusion of its first phase would be a blessed time for the Jama’at.

“Behold! a light cometh, a light anointed by God with the perfume of His pleasure. We shall pour our spirit into him and he will be sheltered under the shadow of God. He will grow rapidly in stature…”

33 | Maryam

When Hazrat Musleh Maudra assumed the office of Khilafat, people used to say that he was just a child. He explained, that one day he overheard someone saying in the adjacent mosque that the Jama’at was being ruined by placing a child in prominence. He was astonished as to which child they meant. He later asked someone in the mosque as to which child was being referred to. The person laughed and said that child was him. A few months later, the very same people that criticised Hazrat Musleh Maudra referred to him as cunning. Although people considered him a child, God conferred a spiritual office to him. In a worldly office, one can utilise force, power, wealth and much more, but he was given a spiritual office at a time when a few pennies were left in the funding box for the Jama’at and a huge debt had accumulated. Those responsible for this situation had remarked as they left the Jama’at, that very soon Christians would take possession of the Madrasa building in Qadian. One can only imagine what the whole Jama'at felt in that situation. However Hazrat Musleh Maudra made a world of difference and the Jama'at grew many hundred-folds and the message of the Promised Messiahas had reached scores of countries and the box which contained a few pennies were then filled with hundreds of thousands! Hazrat Musleh Maudra said, “Even if I die now, I will leave behind hundreds of thousands and I will also leave behind a lot of knowledge.” Thus the Divine prophecy of “He will rapidly grow in stature” was fulfilled most splendidly.

The 52-year long era of Khilafat of Hazrat Musleh Maudra also proved that he did indeed grow “rapidly in stature”. He established the name of Islam around the world by forming overseas missions. The Jama’at at the time did not have much economic means, but it did spread around the world. The Holy Qur’an was translated in different languages and the administrative structure of the Jama’at was made by Hazrat Musleh Maudra. The auxiliary organisations were also made in those times and to this day, they are serving the Jama’at magnificently throughout the world. His main objective was to maintain the Jama’at at the highest level of activity, both in terms of self-improvement and in respect of striving to spread the message of Islam. In this matter, the creation of the auxiliary organisations was a huge boost in fulfilling his objective.

“…and

will be the means of procuring the release of those held in bondage.”

This was fulfilled with great glory as it was Hazrat Musleh Maudra who initiated the movement for the independence of Kashmir. Later on, great Islamic names of the time joined in and (part of) Kashmir was granted independence. Among those who openly acknowledged that it was Hazrat Musleh Maudra whose dynamic leadership attained the success in Kashmir, despite religious differences, were Abdul Majeed Salik and Syed Habib. Allama Niaz Fatehpuri and Allama Daryabadi recognized the great and eminent knowledge of the Holy Qur’an that Hazrat Musleh Maudra possessed.

“…His fame will spread to the ends of the earth and peoples will be blessed through him. He will then be raised to his spiritual station in heaven. This is a matter decreed.”

“Fame”, referred to in the prophecy, signified that through Musleh Maud, the name of the Holy Prophetsaw and the Promised Messiahas will reach all over the world.

The fulfilment of the grand predictions comprised in this prophecy leaves no room for even a shadow of doubt that the prophecy was made under Divine direction and its fulfilment firmly establishes the existence of God, the truth of the Holy Prophet of Islamsaw, the divine origin of the Holy Qur’an, the truth of the Promised Messiahas and the righteousness of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra, and that he was the Divinely appointed Successor of the Promised Messiahas

His outstanding qualities and his astonishing record of high achievement in so many fields of human endeavour, all related to the revival of the faith and the supremacy of Islam over all other religions, marking him out as a great and shining figure of Islam in the latter days.

Waaqifaat-e-Nau from Indonesia Have a Virtual Mulaqat with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba

A group of Waaqifaat-e-Nau from Indonesia were blessed with the opportunity to meet Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper, in a virtual Mulaqat on Sunday, 15 January 2023.

After conveying salaam, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba called Tahira Rahman Sahiba to recite a portion of the Holy Qur’an, followed by its English translation.

Ratu Saleha Ridwan Sahiba then presented a hadith of the Holy Prophetsaw along with the Urdu and English translation.

An extract from the writings of the Promised Messiahas was presented by Marini Adani Sahiba. After that, Hazooraba asked her, “Have you memorised the whole passage?” to which she replied in the affirmative and said she had memorised all the text for Hazooraba. Hearing this, Hazooraba said, “Masha’Allah! You have a very good memory.”

A Tarana (choral poem) was then presented by three Waaqifaat-e-Nau: Naseera Amatus Sabuh, Naima Amatunnur, and Nuzrah Amatul Shafi.

Siti Aisyah Bakrie, Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, then presented a brief report in which she stated that it is a very blessed day for them, especially for the 45 Waaqifaat-e-Nau who have been given the opportunity for this

Maryam | 36

blessed Mulaqat. She said that there are currently 792 Waaqifaat-e-Nau spread across 207 branches in Indonesia. 61% of them are students. She added that they have 38 graduates, out of whom 12 are serving as doctors, nurses, and teachers. Eight are serving the Jama’at, working at the Jama’at’s central office, MTA Indonesia, the Jama’at’s clinic, and Humanity First. Aisha Sahiba reported that last year an Ijtema was held which was attended by 441 Waaqifaat-e-Nau. She then requested Hazooraba to pray for the Indonesian Waaqifaat-e-Nau to become true servants of the Jama’at. A short video was then played showcasing the activities of the Waaqifaat-e-Nau

Thereafter, this fortunate group had the opportunity to ask Hazooraba various questions on an array of matters.

A young Waqifa-e-Nau, Zebaish Mubarka asked Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba how one could eliminate the Satan within them.

Hazooraba said that she was still very young and innocent. “To subjugate Satan, one must always remember Allah the Almighty.” Hazooraba said that one must continue to pray to Allah for His help and refuge from Satan’s influence. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said this is why, when one reads the Holy Qur’an, one says:

میجرلا ناطیشلا نم ہللاب ذوعا so that Allah safeguards one from Satan. Hazooraba said one must pray to Allah to remain pure and so that He may grant one the ability to perform prayer, recite the Holy Qur’an and speak good words. Hazooraba encouraged her to listen to her parents, pay attention to her studies and not quarrel with her friends. “If you try and pray [to Allah], He will help you,” Hazooraba said.

Tufha Raziya Ahmad Sahiba asked Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba that as a Waqifa-e-Nau, how can one, who is serving in the medical field, convey the message of Islam Ahmadiyyat.

Hazooraba said: “On many occasions, I have explained that as Ahmadis, we should convey the message of Ahmadiyyat and the true Islam; but Waaqifaat-e-Nau are more responsible for this purpose. They should convey the message of the true Islam and Ahmadiyyat. When you are in the medical field, if your morals are good, if your attitude towards your patient is good, they will see that ‘this doctor is somehow different from the other doctors. She is a very caring doctor; she listens to me, and she sees [me] very carefully.’ Then she would try to know who you are. Then you can tell them, ‘I am an Ahmadi Muslim doctor and this is my duty, my obligation, that I should respect others and see my patients respectfully and carefully.’ So, in this way, you will open the avenues of Tabligh. Then, among your fellow doctors also, you can tell them you are an Ahmadi Muslim and if you are offering five daily prayers when you are free and praying to Allah the Almighty for your patients, then they will see that ‘she is a good Muslim, and we should see and learn more about them.’ This is how you can open avenues of Tabligh.”

Farhana Achmad Sahiba asked Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba if a Waqifa-e-Nau receives an education loan from the Jama’at, and after graduating from college, decides to serve the Jama’at, how should she repay the loan in this situation?

Hazooraba said: “You can tell the Jama’at that although you took a loan from the Jama’at, with the intention to repay it back to the Jama’at, but with this nominal stipend and allowance which is given to you by the Jama’at, you are unable to pay the amount within a short period of time because the amount is quite substantial. So, Jama’at can fix a small amount [for you] to repay your loan and then they will deduct it from your income or allowance. And, sometimes it so happens, if Jama’at wishes, they can write off the loan. But it all depends on the financial position of the Jama’at. Otherwise, you can just pay back a small amount every month and it will not burden you too much.”

37 | Maryam

Munirah Amatul Kafi Sahiba asked how one could overcome worries regarding one’s future and life choices. She added that she was afraid she would make a decision that would turn out to be unfavourable.

Hazooraba said: “Whenever we are going to start anything, we should seek Allah’s help. Pray to Allah the Almighty that ‘Allah the Almighty makes it easy for us’ and seek Allah the Almighty’s help and His guidance. If it is good for you, then [pray that] Allah the Almighty make it easy for you, and make it comfortable for you, and satisfy your heart in this regard. So, if you feel satisfaction in your heart and you are praying to Allah the Almighty, then He will help you; and it will not end up in a bad result. But you must also remember that we should always pray to Allah the Almighty, continue our prayers in every respect that ‘whatever we are doing, Allah the Almighty always helps us. We sought Allah the Almighty’s help when we started it, and we should seek Allah the Almighty’s help even while we are doing it.’ Till the end of our lives, we should seek Allah’s help and guidance. So, then, Allah the Almighty will help us and when Allah the Almighty helps us, then the end of that thing [which we pray for] is never bad.”

Khadijah Shibyati Sahiba, a nutritionist graduate, asked Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba if a Waqifa-e-Nau could have an occupation after her marriage.

Alluding to her profession, Hazooraba said: “This is a good profession, it helps humanity.” Further, Hazooraba said: “And after the marriage, you can ask your husband. If he is happy that you continue with your work, you should continue. If he says ‘no, you should not’ then, you should not do it; but, voluntarily, you can do it with Lajna and other Jama’at organisations or any charity organisation. But there is no harm in continuing your profession, even after marriage. But at least you must seek the consent of your husband and also remember that when you start family life when your children are born, you see it is the duty of the mother to look after the children, to bring them up in a good atmosphere, and with all the good conditions. So, then, your first responsibility is to take care of your household, your children, your husband; and after that, if you find some time, then you can do the job as well. And, if you think you can do justice with your profession and at the same time you can do justice with your children and your household affairs, then you can do both things together.”

Khaula Sahiba asked Hazooraba what one should do if the parents of a Waqifa-e-Nau asks them to withdraw from the Waqfe Nau Scheme while she insisted on being a Waqifa-e-Nau

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba said: “Your parents offered your life for the cause of the Jama’at before your birth. And when you were born, they told the Jama’at that ‘now we had a girl or a boy’ […] ‘and we want to offer her or him to the Jama’at as a Waqifa-e-Nau’. And at the age of 15 you renew your bond, when you are quite mature and sensible, [stating] that you want to continue your Waqf. When you finish your education, you say that you are continuing your Waqf. So, when you are mature and you have entered the age of maturity and you have entered Lajna Ima’illah at the age of 15, then you can make your own decision. Whether your parents like it or not, now it is up to you whether you want to continue your Waqf or not. Now it is not the duty of [the parents]. They have done their duty when you were young, but now when you have matured, you have to make your own decision. This is why we say that Waaqifeen-e-Nau and Waaqifaat-eNau should renew their bond of Waqfe Nau at the age of 15, and then renew it further at the age of 21 or after completing their education. So, if you want to continue, then it is up to you; if you want to break this bond, it is also up to you. Your parents

Maryam | 38

cannot say that you broke it. You, Waaqifeen-e-Nau or Waaqifaat-e-Nau, yourselves have to decide whether you want to continue your waqf or want to break this bond.”

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba asked her what she did. In reply, she said she was serving in the Ismail magazine of Waqfe Nau. Hearing this, Hazooraba said, “Ismail is for boys, let the boys do it, and you should start your own magazine with the name Maryam. Tell the men that they should continue with their magazine, Ismail, and ‘we are not going to help men. We shall start our own magazine with the name Maryam, for Waaqifaat-e-Nau girls.’ Your men are lazy, they want to put their burden on your shoulder. Tell your men to ‘do your own work, and we are going to do our own work.’”

Saira Basir Sahiba asked Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba what his guidance was for Waaqifaat-e-Nau who prioritise their services in the Jama’at over their duties as students.

Hazooraba said: “Whether you are a Waqifa-e-Nau or not in the Waqfe Nau Scheme, as a student, you should give preference to your studies first. Complete your studies, get a better education and then come forward for the help of the Jama’at and work for the Jama’at. But during the weekends, you should attend Waqfe Nau classes or Waqfe Nau Ijtemas and give some spare time, whenever you are on holiday, give some spare time to your Jama’at work and Waqfe Nau work; whatever is given to you by your Sadr or in charge Waqfe Nau, but never ever at the cost of your studies; you first emphasise on your studies, complete your studies, get a better education, and then you will be a more beneficial and useful asset for the Jama’at, and then help the Jama’at as a Waqifa-e-Nau.”

Bushra Hidayat Sahiba said that both Ahmadi Muslims and non-Ahmadi Muslims studied at her school. She added that sometimes people talked about Ahmadiyyat and in response, she would answer according to her knowledge. She asked how she could make them more interested in Ahmadiyyat.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said that if, at school, it was time for salat and she offered her prayers; refrained from bad habits such as swearing at others, and rather helped maintain peace amongst her classmates and encouraged them to be good, and dressed modestly, then people would naturally consider her to be a good Muslim and would listen to her. “Show your example,” and learn more about Islam and Ahmadiyyat.

Salma Tsania Farisha Sahiba asked how one could remain happy and sincere with Allah even when they are unable to reach and achieve their goals. Hazooraba said: “If you have dreams or goals according to your potential, then you should work hard and pray to Allah the Almighty that Allah help you to achieve them. […] First, you have to work hard then pray to Allah the Almighty that you have done whatever was possible according to your potential and according to your capabilities and now Allah the Almighty help you to achieve that, then Allah the Almighty will, Insha’Allah, help you. You see, everybody, every person doesn’t have the potential for everything. A scientist has a different mindset for his studies, a lawyer has a different mindset and a missionary or a historian has a different thinking and concepts in their mind. Allah the Almighty has made human beings with diverse natures. So, if you are good at history, you cannot say that you would also be a good chemist or scientist; likewise, a good chemist or scientist may not be a good historian. So, first, you will have to see what are the subjects of your interest, and among those subjects which is the best for you.

“Then pray to Allah the Almighty, Allah will help you, Insha’Allah. Never be disappointed, work hard and pray to Allah the Almighty, then you will achieve [your goal].”

39 | Maryam

Kashifa Ahmad Sahiba asked Hazooraba how he maintained his feelings in difficult situations.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said: “[…] You have to pray to Allah the Almighty that Allah help you. Just pray in your namaz, in your sajdah. Cry hard in your sajdah and you will feel some satisfaction in your heart, and it will be okay.”

Aasyah Ahmad Sahiba said that as a housewife and a Waqifa-e-Nau, what could one do to serve the Jama’at.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said: “I have already answered this question. It was almost the same question [asked earlier]. As a housewife, you have to look after your house and your children, and then if you get some spare time, you can serve the Jama’at also during holidays or during weekends, then, with the consent and mutual understanding with your husband, you can work for the Jama’at in your spare time.”

Parwiin Salma Sahiba asked how to instil love for the Jama’at in Ahmadi teenagers so they can be active in the Jama’at.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba asked her how she instilled the love of the Jama’at in her heart when she was younger? “[Did] your parents inspire you to work for the Jama’at? Or your friends inspired you to work for the Jama’at? Or your Lajna organisation? Or was it you yourself; it was your inborn desire to work for the Jama’at and create love for the Jama’at?” In response, she said that her parents, at first, instilled love for the Jama’at in her.

Hearing this, Hazooraba said: “Then, the answer is the same. […] So, as you had this love for the Jama’at, the same thing you should try to develop among the teenagers of the Jama’at – the younger girls.

“The first thing is that they should know why they are Ahmadis, who is the Promised Messiah, upon him be peace, why did they do Bai‘at of Khilafat, why did their parents offer them in Waqfe Nau; and being a Waqifa-e-Nau and being an Ahmadi Muslim, what are their duties. If they realise their duties, then they will understand their responsibility. When they understand their responsibility, then there will be some purpose before them that they have to achieve. And, for that, when they work hard and pray to Allah the Almighty for it, then the love of the Jama’at and the work and the status of being Waaqifaat-e-Nau will itself develop in their hearts.”

Salma Falah Sahiba asked Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba that, as Waqifa-e-Nau, when one is serving the Jama’at as a full-time employee and then gets married, should one quit their service in the Jama’at or continue working with the permission of their husband?

Hazooraba said: “I have already answered this question. Whatever [work] you are doing in the Jama’at or outside, after marriage, you should work with the permission and consent of your husband. But the first thing is that you make your husband realise that if you are working for the Jama’at, it will help to increase your spiritual level as well as the blessings of Allah the Almighty. If you are working for the Jama’at, you are getting the blessings of Allah the Almighty. So, make your husband realise, so that [he] lets

Maryam | 40

you work for the Jama’at and in this way, you will be receiving more blessings and your family will be receiving more blessings of Allah the Almighty. Even despite that, [if] your husband insists that ‘no, you have to leave the job, you have to leave the work for the Jama’at’ then, for the time being, you can leave it and keep on telling your husband and be persuasive, tell him all the time that ‘No, we should give some time to the Jama’at, then we can have more blessings from Allah the Almighty.’ And also, a Waqifae-Nau girl should tell their match, the person to whom they are going to get married and his family, that ‘being a Waqifa-e-Nau, this is our obligation to serve the Jama’at whenever we are asked by the Jama’at to come forward. So, I am a Waqifa-e-Nau, being a Waqifa-e-Nau it is my duty. You will have to understand this thing that, even after marriage, I will work for the Jama’at whenever I am asked to do it.’”

Hazooraba said: “It all depends on what your education is. If you are a doctor Waqifa-eNau or a teacher Waqifa-e-Nau, then you can be sent to other countries as a Waqfe Nau teacher or doctor; but it all depends on your profession and your education. If you are a simple graduate, then the Jama’at will ask you to serve in your own country, not outside. So, as a Waqifa-e-Nau you can offer yourself, saying that ‘now I am ready, I have completed my education, wherever Markaz or Centre or Khalifa-e-Waqt wants to send me, I will go.’ Then we shall decide whether we should take your services, use your services within your country or outside your country. Yes, it is quite possible that you can be sent outside provided we need that profession.”

Lastly, Fatima Hafsya Sahiba asked Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba if there is any opportunity for Indonesian Waaqifaat-e-Nau to serve in other countries and what kind of service it would be. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba conveyed his salaam after which the meeting came to a close.

Syed Taalay Ahmed Shaheed –A Quiet Progress

‘So whoever does good works and is a believer, his effort will not be disregarded and We shall surely record it.’ (The Holy Qur’an 21:95)

In recent history, modern education systems have had a shift in their teaching philosophy. Where previously emphasis was laid on rote learning, attainment of knowledge and test scores, educators have now shifted their focus on markers of progress and application of knowledge in different contexts, such as having ‘critical thinking’ skills. Not only are these markers of progress celebrated as a success for the learner, but they are also seen as a positive reflection on the educator and the wider institute.

As an educator myself, I am acutely aware that not all progress is recorded, and can sometimes even go unnoticed… Until one day, a student’s glaring attainment takes you by complete surprise.

Progress, however, is not a new concept, nor unique to education. In fact, following the religion of Islam, at its core, is about a very personal, spiritual progress. A religion where ‘Jihad-e-Akbar’ (the jihad or ‘struggle’ of greatest importance in Islam) is the struggle for self-reformation1. This struggle is not necessarily loud and may not be detected easily by external parties. But one day, someone else’s glaring spiritual progress, can be unveiled all at once.

With this in mind, I will share some personal memories of my brother, Syed Taalay Ahmed Shaheed, which on reflection, were quiet examples of how he was constantly evolving due to his love for Allah, His Messenger, His Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyya and His Jama’at.

Forgiveness

‘Take to forgiveness, and enjoin kindness, and turn away from the ignorant.’ (The Holy Qur’an 7:200)

In the months leading up to my brother’s martyrdom, I would often have extended phone conversations with him, talking about anything from a favourite coffee order to deeply spiritual topics. In one particular phone call, though I do not recall the specific topic of discussion, I remember making a complaint (as younger sisters do) regarding some general issue of – what I felt was – unjust conduct.

Taalay Bhai’s response was far from what I expected – instead of providing sympathy, or taking sides, he simply chuckled and commented something along the lines of,

Nudrat Ahmed
Maryam | 42

‘As you get older, you get more soft-hearted. You don’t judge others as harshly, and you’re more willing to let things go.’

The fact that I do not remember the conversation, nor my complaint, yet remember the words of my brother in response, display what a profound impact this moment had on me. Here was my older brother, quietly demonstrating what it meant to be forgiving. At the time, he was only 31. Though I cannot say I have met all the 31-year-olds in the world, I can say that I have not encountered many people (young and old) who have shown the same level of maturity, kindness and forgiveness as I felt was displayed in that moment. He did not make a grand speech about forgiveness, or how I was in the wrong for my complaint, but simply said enough for me to realise that he was making spiritual progress that I couldn’t necessarily see and should be mindful of my own self-reformation.

Backbiting

‘O ye who believe! avoid most of suspicions; for suspicion in some cases is a sin. And spy not, nor backbite one another. […]’ (The Holy Qur’an 49:13)

During the pandemic, there were many news reports which bore particular significance for the UK. There were some news stories which my brother and I had taken an interest in and would send each other updates and links relating to them, thereafter discussing our thoughts on it.

Throughout the pandemic, I felt that there seemed to be a ‘media fatigue’ in the general population and it appeared people would rather talk about anything but the news. One day, whilst discussing one of the news stories we were following, I casually mentioned to my brother about how I’d rather talk about the news to stop me from resorting to frivolous ‘idle-talk’, which could lead to backbiting!

He agreed, adding an unexpected comment that if anyone tried to indulge in frivolous talk with him, he would shut-down the conversation or that failing, would ensure he did not spread idle-talk.

Though this comment came up naturally in a conversation we were having, it remains with me constantly. Backbiting and gossip are unfortunately societal ills that are weaved into our everyday lives – whether through the media, social media, friendships, work or school – which can make them difficult to avoid. Despite this, my brother encouraged me to maintain this effort by giving his own personal example. This wasn’t to show off or demonstrate any superiority, but to simply exhibit that this was a challenge faced by everyone and it was our duty to take steps to combat it.

Honesty

‘Qawl-e-Sadeed (the right word) entails uttering what is completely true and appropriate and has no hint of randomness, uselessness and falsehood.’ – The Promised Messiahas.2

One of the many qualities that now, more than ever, I appreciate about my older brother was his honesty. He was straightforward and, especially for me, this left little room for misunderstandings.

However, more than this, was the value his words then held as a result of this honesty. There are many incidents, though seemingly small, that I still remember to this day, however I will just give one of my own examples here. Once, he was showing me a documentary video on YouTube. I commented upon the editing and cinematography and he paused the video, looking at me very carefully. He asked,

‘Did someone teach you that?’ to which I replied that I hadn’t been taught. He commented that,‘You’re quite perceptive to pick up on those things, then.’

Though to many this may seem like an inconsequential comment, Taalay Bhai was not one for exaggeration or being over-complimentary. Such a comment held more value than any positive feedback I’d received from a university lecturer or teacher, simply because I knew it was completely sincere. There are many small, uplifting instances like this which, even now, are still ingrained in my memory. Whilst some may feel that perhaps these are simply the sentiments of a younger sister who admired her older brother, there is another similar incident, which does not relate directly to me.

In 2021, I happened to be helping on ‘The God Summit’ by The Review of Religions team, which was running for the first time ever (under the guidance of beloved Hazooraba). After the initial launch of the project, positive comments were received from all around the world, Alhamdolillah. However, amongst it all, I was told that the feedback that was considered the ‘best compliment’ on a personal level for one of the project managers, was the positive feedback given by Taalay Bhai!

Taken aback by this comment, I proceeded to joke with my brother that perhaps he didn’t often give feedback to others, to which he chuckled along. In retrospect, I realise that this experience was similar to my own experience. Alhamdolillah, by the Grace of Allah, Taalay Bhai was an extremely genuine individual, therefore when positive comments were given by him, the sincerity was deeply felt by those receiving them, as a result of his honesty.

As a last example of his honesty and ‘Qawl-e-Sadeed’ (though there are many I could mention), I would like to mention one of his final messages with me. During his time in Ghana, shortly before his martyrdom, he advised me that my standards of purdah (modest dress/hijab) should be maintained, if not increased, as my own family was simultaneously embarking on our journey of Waqf in West Africa. Though this was a more direct example of ‘Qawl-e-Sadeed’, this ‘right word’ was uttered at a very appropriate time. It enabled me to have the courage to maintain my own boundaries and standards of purdah here, as well as my family’s, which I may have not had the foresight to do on my own otherwise, due to cultural differences in West Africa.

Alhamdolillah, my brother had many outstanding qualities that I was well-aware of during his life, nevertheless, the more subtle spiritual ‘progress markers’ were not something I was actively looking for. In fact, my brother was constantly developing and through his shahadat, Allah Almighty made all the indicators I did not consciously notice previously, apparent all at once.

Just as we look for progress in our worldly pursuits, Allah Almighty is recording our progress in spiritual pursuits. Just as external parties view the attainment of a learner as a reflection on the educator, our positive characteristics, as a result of progress in our faith, reflect positively on Islam.

Ultimately, the importance of tangible spiritual progress has been described by the Promised Messiahas in the following words,

‘If you wish to attain the grace and beneficence of Allah the Exalted, then demonstrate an accomplishment, otherwise you will be discarded like a useless item. No one throws out his household valuables, gold and silver. On the contrary all such items and all useful and valuable items are greatly cared for. However, if a dead rat is found in the house, it will be instantly thrown out. Similarly, Allah the Exalted always holds dear His pious people, grants them long age and blesses their business. He does not let them go to waste and does not let them die an ignoble death. However, one who contravenes the directives of Allah the Exalted is destroyed. If you wish for God Almighty to value you it is essential that you become pious so that you are worthy in God’s sight. God makes a distinction between those who fear Him and abide by His commandments and the others. The secret for man to find blessing is in avoiding evil. Such a person is worthy wherever he lives because he exudes piety. He is compassionate to the underprivileged, is kind to his neighbours; is not mischievous, does not file false court cases, does not give false testimonies, in fact he keeps his heart purified and is inclined to God and is called God’s friend.’3

LessOns FROM AND A Four Cats Bird

Maryam | 46

It was a Sunday afternoon and Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, the Promised Messiah as was at home, albeit worried, as his friend and companion, Hazrat Seth Allah Rakhkha Abdul Rahman ra of Madras, was faced with a difficult problem.

That day, on 29th June 1902, an interesting incident unfolded before the Promised Messiah as at his house. It was so interesting, in fact, that the next day, Hazooras narrated the whole story in a letter to his friend. Hazooras wrote:

“I have four [free-roaming] cats in my house; a mother and three daughters, that are also young and strong. Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting alone in the hallway when a bird came and sat in front of my door. The big cat immediately pounced on the bird and seized the bird’s head in its mouth.

“Then another cat came, snatched the bird from the first one and took its head in its mouth and dragged it on the ground so hard that I could not watch out of pity [for the bird] and turned the other way.

“Then I saw the third cat take the bird’s head in its mouth and at that time I thought that [its] head had probably been devoured. Meanwhile, the fourth cat took the bird and dragged it to the ground.

“At this point, I was sure that the bird was dead and its head had been eaten. The bird fell several times while it was being dragged. Then one of the cats, wishing to partake of the bird’s flesh, pulled it towards itself, perhaps so that half [of the bird] might go to the other cat and a half to it.

“But for some reason, the bird escaped from the mouths of both of them and fell to the ground. As soon as it fell, it fluttered to life and flew away. All four cats gave chase, but what could be done? [The bird] went and sat on a tree, and the cats came back disappointed and beaten.

“My heart was thrilled to see this incident — that this is the way how God Almighty also saves [one] from the hands of their enemies.

“Then, thinking that this was a time for the acceptance of prayer, I prayed for you for a long time, ‘O Almighty God! Just as you saved this helpless bird from the bloodlust of its enemies, so save the life of your helpless servant Abdul Rahman. Am in.’ I hope that this prayer will not be in vain.” (Maktubat-e-Ahmad, 2008, Vol. 2, pp. 404–405)

This small event

in the life of the Promised Messiah as can shed light on his beautiful character and personality. There were several lessons to learn from the anecdote about the Promised Messiah as; Hazooras made it a habit to carefully observe the world around him, he was a true friend who cared for and prayed for his companions, Hazooras had a soft heart, full of sympathy for all of God’s creations. T he Promised Messiah as was extremely humble and hopeful of the help of Allah. May Allah enable us to emulate the noble moral character of the Promised Messiah as Ameen.
