SPRING INTO ACTION WITH WATERMARK’S 2023 ARTS GUIDE

Jeremy Williams

Look, it’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Watermark’s annual Spring Arts Guide, a comprehensive list of arts and entertainment offerings from the start of March to the end of the summer happening across Central Florida and Tampa Bay. This guide covers everything from concerts, art exhibits, festivals and dance recitals to theatrical productions, cover bands and much more.

Florida has some of the best entertainment anywhere in the world with great theaters, museums, concert halls, arenas, theme parks and other venues. With this great entertainment there must also come great listings, so that is what we have done. We used all our superpowers to search websites, press releases and announcements from all the venues throughout Central Florida and Tampa Bay to bring you as complete an arts listing as we could.

We have also assembled a few performers to highlight in profiles on some of the following pages as

well as selected a few offerings with uncanny talent that you don’t want to miss.

We were not able to include everything that our area has to offer, so along with as many selections as we could fit, we have included phone numbers and websites for each of the venues. They also continue to add shows to their schedules well into the season, so be sure to continuously check in with your favorite places to find out what else might be coming to their stages.

This guide covers the Space Coast, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota and all the amazing spaces in between from now to the end of the summer. Remember, a true crimefighter always carries everything they needs in their utility belt, and a true arts lover never has their Spring Arts Guide out of arms reach. So be sure to keep this guide handy all season long. You will not be disappointed ... and now, let the shows begin!

SAM SMITH

Sam Smith recently made history as the first openly nonbinary Grammy winner for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Their song “Unholy” featuring Kim Petra — who became the first out trans person to win a Grammy — topped international charts.

The English singer/ songwriter has earned five Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, three Billboard Music Awards and countless others. On Jan. 27, Smith released their new LP, “Gloria,” which they said is a “coming of age” album and has helped them through some dark times.

This year, Smith will be returning to the U.S. on their first North American tour since 2018. The 27-city tour will kick off in Miami July 25.

Smith, with special guest Jessie Reyes, comes to the Amway Center in Orlando July 26.

KINKY BOOTS

Get ready to kick up your heels as “Kinky Boots” makes its way to Orlando Shakes.

Based on the 2005 film, “Kinky Boots” follows Charlie Price, a young aspiring business man, who is forced to give up his dreams of living in London to save his father’s family business. Charlie inherits his father’s bankrupt factory and unexpectedly finds inspiration in Lola, a drag entertainer who is looking for some sturdy stilettos.

“Kinky Boots,” with a book written by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and 16 original songs written by Cyndi Lauper, became a smash hit musical on Broadway in 2013, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“Kinky Boots” is rated PG-13 by Orlando Shakes meaning children under five will not be admitted into the theatre.

3rd Annual Tampa Bay Transgender Film Festival

The Tampa Bay Gay and Lesbian Film Festival has entertained and empowered audiences for more than 30 years, showcasing films by, for and about the LGBTQ community. Recent expansions include its Tampa Bay Transgender Film Festival, launched in 2020.

The festival was designed to create space grounded in and centered around the transgender community, support those in film who support the community and to share the films with allies. It was originally held in November surrounding Transgender Day of Remembrance but this year, moves to support Transgender Day of Visibility.

This year's festival will include in-person and virtual screenings throughout the weekend, with additional in-person events and activities supporting the organization’s efforts.

BeyoncE

Beyoncé became the most decorated artist in history at the 65th annual Grammy Awards this year, accepting Best Dance/Electronic Album for her seventh studio release “Renaissance.” It’s an album the entertainer dedicated in part to her late Uncle Jonny, a gay man.

Released in 2022, it was recorded at the height of the pandemic and samples or features a number of LGBTQ collaborators, creating “a place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.”

During her acceptance speech, Beyoncé thanked "the queer community, for your love and for inventing this genre.” That love will be on full display for Beyoncé's “Renaissance World Tour” in support of the album.

The show will highlight its 16 songs and the LGBTQ ally’s extensive catalogue with just two Florida stops, one in Tampa and the other in Miami.
