plots: ‘White House Plumbers’ re-examines Watergate
The recent precedent-setting arrest of a former president of the United States only deepens the satirical value of the latest limited series, “White House Plumbers,” which premieres Monday, May 1, on HBO and HBO Max.
Set during Richard Nixon’s presidency, the series follows two key players in the Watergate scandal: G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt, portrayed by Justin Theroux (“The Mosquito Coast”) and Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”).
Formerly with the FBI and CIA, respectively, Liddy and Hunt were both instrumental to Nixon’s 1972 re-election and 1974 resignation. They worked together, carrying out break-ins and wiretaps in service of Nixon and his office, until their close involvement in the Democratic National Committee headquarters break-in at the Watergate Complex — an event dubbed a “third-rate burglary” by Nixon’s press secretary — exposed their criminal activities and took down the very administration they were trying to protect.
Part of the so-called “Plumbers” — members of Nixon’s administration who set out to investigate and act on leaks of top-secret documents — Hunt and Liddy were just two of 48 people convicted (69 were indicted with crimes) for their part in the Watergate scandal, which involved the illegal surveillance of and investigations into opposing activists and politicians. Liddy and Hunt were each convicted of conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping. Ultimately, they served out portions of their sentences: Hunt was released after 33 months, while Liddy’s sentence was commuted by President Carter in 1977 after he’d served over four years of a 20year sentence.
The Plumbers, specifically Liddy and Hunt, are the focus of HBO’s five-episode miniseries. The screenplay is based on the 2007 book, “Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons from the White House,” co-authored by Nixon administration official Egil Krogh and his son, Matthew Krogh. Historically a rule-follower, Egil Krogh was made the head of the Plumbers and quickly implicated himself in criminal activity before being terminated. He pleaded
guilty to charges in relation to his involvement in the Watergate scandal, serving a few months of his six-year prison sentence. Other events from his time in the White House are detailed in his 1994 book, “The Day Elvis Met Nixon,” including Nixon’s meetings with superstar Elvis Presley, who wanted to help the government fight the war on drugs.
Presumably a less empathetic and more satirical examination of the scandal than its source material, “’White House Plumbers’ sheds light on the lesser-known series of events that led up to one of America’s greatest political crimes” (per HBO), including the personal toll on the families of those involved.
Cast as those family members are Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”) as Dorothy Hunt, Judy Greer (“Reboot”) as Fran Liddy and Kiernan Shipka (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) as Kevan Hunt. In an official trailer for the series released in late March, all of the family members appear exasperated by Liddy and Hunt’s antics. Domhnall Gleeson (“The Patient”) is White House Counsel John Dean, Toby Huss (“Halt and Catch Fire”) is head of security for Nixon’s re-election campaign, James McCord, Ike Barinholtz (“History of the World: Part II”) is re-election director Jeb Magruder, Kathleen Turner (“The Kominsky Method”) is lobbyist Dita Beard, David Krumholtz (“Super Pumped”) is Hunt’s lawyer, William O. Bittman, and F. Murray Abraham (“The White Lotus”) is Judge John Sirica, who presided over the Watergate burglary trial.
Political satire can be hard to nail, but when the creative minds that helped make “Veep” so bitingly hilarious are behind it, you can be certain it’s worth a watch. “White House Plumbers” writer/creator duo Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck as well as director David Mandel, all have “Veep” credits on their resumes, sticking with HBO after the political sitcom ended in 2019.
Step back in time and slide into one of the biggest political scandals in American history when “White House Plumbers,” starring Theroux and Harrelson, premieres Monday, May 1, on HBO and HBO Max.

BY GEORGE DICKIENimmo sets the table with a smile for the Mets
It wasn’t that long ago that Brandon Nimmo was looked upon in some corners as a fourth outfielder. Critics argued that his .260 batting average and below grade defense in center field made him nothing but a back-up with a big grin.
But with an adjustment in positioning in 2022 and the growing realization that leadoff hitters with pop and a lifetime on-base percentage of .385 don’t grow on trees, Nimmo became an attractive commodity on last winter’s free agent market. The New York Mets ponied up, resigning him to an eight-year, $162 million contract.
And now it’s time for the affable Wyoming native to live up to it. He was solid in his walk year in ‘22, batting .274 with 16 home runs, 71 walks, 102 runs scored, an on-base percentage of .367 and an OPS of an even .800.
But arguably his most memorable moment of the season came on defense. In the Mets’ home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 31, Nimmo’s leap at the fence to haul in a would-be Justin Turner home run preserved an important victory against a possible playoff opponent and caused the Citi Field faithful to erupt in hysterics. Caught up in the moment, Nimmo thrust his fist in the air, his smile wider than ever.
As 2023 gets going, it seems the only thing that might hold Nimmo back is injury. He missed significant time in 2019 and 2021 but the Mets are betting his full 2022 campaign will be more representative of his reliability going forward.
Full name: Brandon Tate Nimmo
Birth date: March 27, 1993
Birthplace: Cheyenne, Wyo.
Height/weight: 6 feet, 3 inches/206 pounds Teams: New York Mets (2016-present)
Position: Center fielder Bats/throws: Left/right No.: 9
Honors and achievements: National League triples leader (2022; career stats – .269 average with 63 homers, 213 RBIs, 335
runs, an on-base percentage of .385 and OPS of .827
Did you know: Nimmo never played high school baseball as Wyoming is one of three states that do not offer it; he did, however, star in American Legion ball

“Movie: Bigger, Stronger, Faster” (April 30)
In the style of Morgan Spurlock and Michael Moore, filmmaker Christopher Bell explores the world of performance-enhancing drugs, starting with himself and his two brothers — he no longer uses them, but they do. The film doesn’t come out strongly for or against steroid use but does make a poignant point on how necessary it seems to have become in a culture obsessed with winning.
“Algiers, America” (April 30)
This five-part documentary series follows the Edna Karr High School football team, the pride of the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, a community fighting to stem the tide of child deaths from gun violence. It also chronicles the efforts of coach Brice Brown and the Cougars to win their fifth state championship in six years. (ORIGINAL)
“Sweet Tooth” (April 30)
The actioner about a half-human/half-deer boy returns for its sophomore round and finds Gus (Christian Convery) and his fellow hybrids held captive by the Last Men in order to find a cure for the Sick. To save his friends, Gus must find new strength as he uncovers the origins of The Great Crumble. Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar and Dania Ramirez also star. (ORIGINAL)
“A Small Light” (May 2)
This new series follows 20-something Miep Gies, who hid her boss Otto Frank and his family from the Nazis during World War II. For two years, Miep, her husband and others helped watch over Otto, his family and four others in the secret annex. Miep found Anne’s diary and kept it safe so Otto, the only one of the eight who survived, could later share it with the world.

BY JAY BOBBINWill Jim Nantz still lead a sporting life?
Q: Is Jim Nantz leaving sportscasting completely? – Dan Morrissey, via email
A: No. Though the CBS Sports veteran decided to end his 32-season run of calling NCAA games to give himself more family time – especially during the intense tournament period when many games are compacted into a short span – he continued to broadcast golf’s Masters earlier this month, right after the college basketball season wrapped up.
Ian Eagle will succeed Nantz in the hoops-related role, but Nantz also will remain a member of CBS’ team covering the NFL. In fact, not long ago, he signed a new contract to keep going with his football duties.
Q: How many “Angels” were there after Farrah Fawcett on the original “Charlie’s Angels”? – Stephanie Williams, DeLand, Fla.
A: The actress then billed as Farrah Fawcett-Majors was succeeded immediately by Cheryl Ladd, playing Kris Munroe, the sister of Farrah’s Jill. Ladd stayed for the rest of the ABC series, but Kate Jackson eventually left and was followed first by Shelley Hack as Tiffany Welles, and then by Tanya Roberts as Julie Rogers during the show’s final season.
Q: It’s nice when the “FBI” shows all come together for one story. Why doesn’t that happen more often? – Roger Patrick, via email
A: It’s largely a matter of logistics, since not only does the filming of the three CBS shows have to be coordinated in such instances, it has to happen across two continents. “FBI: International” actually films in Europe, while “FBI” and “FBI: Most Wanted” are made in the New York area. That means arranging the schedule for whatever cast members might need to go overseas, not only for the given story, but also to accommodate any other adjacent episodes of their own shows that also involve them.
Such was the case with “FBI’s” Jeremy Sisto for the recent crossover, since he filmed on location in Rome and had to be absent from the parent “FBI” set for a while. Executive producer Dick Wolf tends to intermingle his NBC “Law & Order” and “Chicago” shows more often, but the casts of each of those franchises generally share the same city, making such an undertaking a bit easier.

BY JAY BOBBINHow television’s ‘Batman’ began
For one of the most popular and trendsetting series of the 1960s, “Batman,” it all started with the episode “Hi Diddle Riddle” ... which MeTV presents Saturday, May 6. At the time, ABC didn’t know quite what it had, given the superhero saga’s somewhat campy approach and its formatting that split stories into halves airing on consecutive nights. However, the straight-faced approach of Adam West and Burt Ward as Gotham City protectors Batman and Robin (and their aliases, wealthy Bruce Wayne and his ward Dick Grayson) caught on with audiences quickly.
Frank Gorshin set the pace for the show’s rotating cast of villains as the very limber, maniacally gleeful Riddler, who taunts the Dynamic Duo with cryptic clues – and eventually captures Robin, with the help of his appropriately named moll Molly. Some big-name guest casting was involved there, since Jill St. John played that part.

Exploring immigrant cultures and cuisines on ‘Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi’
Padma Lakshmi believes food is a great vehicle to get to know other cultures. And in Season 2 of “Taste the Nation,” she explores more immigrant communities and their cuisines and addresses a few serious subjects along the way.
Premiering Friday, May 5, on Hulu, the sophomore round brings the award-winning cookbook author and presenter to more locales across the U.S. to visit the diverse communities that have shaped what American food is today.
So in the 10 episodes, she goes to Washington D.C., where she joins the Afghan community as they welcome new arrivals in the wake of the war in their homeland; Appalachia, where she discovers new recipes and ingredients and tries her hand at playing the banjo; and Lowell, Mass., home to an enterprising Cambodian community that has revitalized a once-decaying town.
In Friday’s opener, Lakshmi visits Puerto Rico, where there is disagreement over whether the beloved local dish pasteles should be eaten with or without ketchup. In the process, she learns that mid-20th century industrialization by American companies resulted in the decline of agriculture on the island, thus making it difficult to find locally grown produce.
So much of what is sold in markets in Puerto Rico today comes from places like Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. mainland.
bestof ...
“It’s so sad,” Lakshmi says. “And the thing is Puerto Ricans should have sovereignty over what happens to them and their land and they don’t because they’re really a colony of the United States. We don’t call it a colony; we call it a territory but it’s the same thing.
“It’s because of this ancient, 100-year-old shipping law called the Jones Act,” she continues. “And that law was made not to help Puerto Ricans or even American farmers; it was made to help American corporations. And we’re in the predicament we’re in now and we like to think of ourselves as so evolved but this is something that is still an issue. And I don’t think a lot of people know it.”
Born in India but raised in New York, Lakshmi is an immigrant herself. So she hopes this show can familiarize viewers with cuisines and cultures they might otherwise consider alien.
“At the end of the day, we are all interconnected on this planet,” she says. “I don’t care how much we want to isolate ourselves, we are interconnected. COVID taught us that. And so maybe if people can’t travel themselves, maybe they can travel with their forks, maybe they can travel with this show.
“And this show wasn’t really designed for people who think like me,” she continues. “It was designed for people who don’t think like me and who are maybe afraid of immigrants coming to this country. That’s who the show is designed for.”

“The Old Man and the Sea” (1958) basically Spencer Tracy and the ocean in this adap tation of the Ernest Hemingway novel.
“The Last Voyage” (1960) tense melodrama (which Turner Classic Movies shows Wednesday, May 3), director Andrew L. Stone actually seemed to sink a ship, with Robert Stack playing a passenger trying to get his trapped wife (Dorothy Malone) off the vessel in time. And trust us, it turns out to be the nick of time.
“Jaws” (1975)
“Lifeboat” (1944) Co-written by novelist John Steinbeck, Alfred Hitchcock’s excellent melodrama loads the title craft with survivors of a ship that was targeted and sunk by a U-boat ... with one of the U-boat’s crew members also on the lifeboat.
“The Caine Mutiny” (1954) Though a good chunk of this drama takes place in a courtroom, a sizable amount of it also unfolds at sea, where said mutiny occurs – and Humphrey Bogart is chillingly great as Captain Queeg.
Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss) that pursues a great white shark surely will “need a bigger boat.”
“Das Boot” (1981)
Petersen’s intense drama follows a German U-boat crew on a dangerous mission.
“Titanic” (1997)
alized elements, director James Cameron’s Os car-winning take on the disaster is the most visually stunning one to date, and it cemented the stardom of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
