The present-day Clapham High Street is in fact an ancient Roman road – a stone marking its existence can be found at the entrance to the former Clapham Library. The area was mentioned in the Domesday Book and was formerly part of the Brixton Hundred and within Surrey. Many large 17th- and 18th-century country homes were built around the Common and attracted the wealthy gentry, including Samuel Pepys. Today, the area is split into two halves: the Old Town around Abbeville Road which is popular with families, and the ‘Young Clapham’ around the High Street, where there is new development. Clapham has many different styles of houses, from detached and semi-detached family homes to characterful terraced properties as well as apartments. There is a strong family market for houses and also an equally buoyant flat market for the younger professionals wanting to be within easy commutable distance of central London. Properties range from Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Arts and Crafts era as well as new-build, modern homes.

Tell us a little about the background of Clarus Construction I decided to set up my own company after gaining many years of experience within the construction industry as a Senior Project Manager. Within this role I oversaw the building of various developments, from multimillion-pound homes to developments of apartments. My involvement in these projects was from the initial pre-development planning right up to welcoming the client into their new home. This has meant I have worked with the Planning Authorities and Building Control, as well as working alongside architects and engineers. 2. What are the most in demand services you offer? Since Covid people are very keen to upgrade their existing properties to create an ambient living space and to maximise the property potential. We have been involved in various projects, from creating new kitchen and living spaces to fully completing new builds. We have completely redesigned and built older buildings to bring them up to today’s design trends of open plan living, upgrading the insulation quality and fitting underfloor heating.

We prefer to be involved from research and design to support the client to achieve their project’s full potential. However, we are happy to be involved from any phase in the process. We ensure all our projects are finished to a high standard and we are committed to ensuring the whole process is as stress free as possible for the client 3. What modifications would you suggest create the most added value on a property? Extra bedrooms and separate office/hobbies room are always a good investment. Modifying to open plan living is also very popular and is an instant hit when selling a property. With energy prices on the rise I think people will be looking at the running cost of houses, so subsequently energy efficiency and insulation has become an important factor. 4. What are your favourite type of projects? I feel a sense of accomplishment with each project that is completed, especially the more challenging ones like Station Approach. Clarus Construction are happy to take on projects from extensions to full house renovations and new build homes. We are only too happy to liaise with architects and other professional bodies to make your vision a reality. 5. Tell us about a project you're particularly proud of

I project managed a development at Station Approach in Marlow, consisting of three 2-bedroom houses, eight 2-bedroom apartments and one 1-bedroom apartment. The ‘Old Coal Yard' design was based on the concept of converted industrial Victorian railway buildings, but with a modern residential twist. The completed build demonstrates the high level of finish and detail that we pride ourselves on. Tell us a little about the background of Gosling Ltd? I set up Gosling in 2005, having been in the furniture design and interiors industry for many years. My goal was to establish a reputation for design excellence, awe-inspiring craftsmanship and a design service perfectly tailored to the client’s individual needs. Designing and building a home for someone is incredibly personal. It requires vision, enthusiasm and an egoless desire to listen closely to the client’s needs in order to make a home truly bespoke and personal.

Who were your inspirations when you were learning your craft? My early design inspiration came from museum collections in France, USA, St Petersburg and Venice and of course, my home town, London. From Regency designers, such as Sir John Soane, John Nash, Frank Lloyd Wright to Hubert de Givency. What are the main steps from initial consultation to completion?

I have an arts/textiles degree and worked in the fashion industry for years, managing production and overseeing the creatives briefs to ensure their vision reached the stores. I loved working with the fabrics and designs so then decided to set up a curtains and blinds business that worked to the customer taste, rather than selling them specific set looks.

Who takes the lead creatively when you have that first meeting? our first meeting is always about listening to what the customer is telling us about their home, whether its a whole refurbishment or a redesign of a room/ floor in the house. We tap into what style they might like and then suggest ideas and concepts that may work. From that meeting, we then send a detailed quote with various options and prices . The customer can then adjust their potential order to fit with their budget. We do not sell one collection of fabrics - we source from many brands and price ranges to suit the client budget

Interview with.. James Munro, Director, Granit Architecture + Interiors Tell us about the background of Granit Architecture + Interiors?

What characteristics set you apart from other practices?

At Granit, we love to design homes. We started more than 30 years ago and have created thousands of homes, basements, extensions and residential developments. Much of our work is within 20 miles of our offices in Clapham Old Town. However, we have worked worldwide.

Granit provides an integrated architecture and interior design service that benefits our clients through complementary design thinking and potentially saves time and cost. We also have in-house expertise in sustainable design and building surveying services.

We provide an integrated architecture and interior design service, predominantly for private clients and grand designers. Our team is 22 in number, which means we are big enough to put a team on every project but small enough to give our clients a bespoke and attentive service.

Our history means we have strong relationships with quality suppliers, including kitchen and glazing companies, and partners such as builders. We have worked across all London Boroughs and have a proven track record of gaining planning permission, often within challenging constraints, such as working on listed buildings, conservation areas and basements. Granit is a RIBA Chartered Practice, so our team enjoys lots of training and professional development opportunities.

What’s your customer process from receiving that initial enquiry? The first step is to develop a deep understanding of our client’s design brief. We start with a remote consultation to help us understand their goals and aspirations, which we follow up with a meeting at the property. For many clients, it is the first time they have completed a building project, so we take the time to guide them through the process, step by step.

Could you illustrate an example of a residential development you worked on locally and the outcome for your client?

Often our clients are in the process of buying a property and need advice on what might be possible with a reconfiguration or extension work and how to work within the local planning constraints. We provide a lot of advice to our clients to help them move forward.

One of my favourite projects is on Briarwood Road in Clapham. Our client owned an Edwardian terraced house, and his brief was to enlarge it to the rear and build a basement to increase the living space. He wanted dedicated areas for a cinema room, a music room and two living areas. Crucially he wanted a wow factor.

Once we understand the project and brief, we will provide a formal written proposal and letter of appointment, alongside a contract for our services. We will put a project team together upon selection and get started

The result is a spacious home that achieves everything on our client’s wish list. A critical decision was to move the kitchen and dining areas into the rear of a new basement space to free up the
