What are the most popular requests from residential clients? We regularly deal with families moving into homes that haven’t been updated or renovated for several decades, where we can bring modernity and efficiencies without compromising the charm and aesthetic of the original house. Clients tend to have an initial set of requirements, but also want us to take a holistic look at the property, to consider all the opportunities and improvements on offer. Typically, we focus on the heart of the home (kitchen, living, dining) and how this space prioritises views and encourages a seamless transition to a usable outdoor space, often with an outdoor kitchen and some covered space. We understand the elements, soil, and www.charterwalk.co.uk outdoor drainage, in a way that builders may not have had the chance to learn. This allows our projects to withstand the weather and allow the user to enjoy their space all through the year. Please tell us a little about the background of your firm? Charter Walk specialise in the design, supply and installation of luxury English handmade and German bespoke made kitchens to private clients, interior designers and property developers throughout the South East. We have built a reputation for innovative design, superb craftsmanship and attention to detail that makes the process of sourcing a kitchen from us both enjoyable and stress free.

Charter Walk Kitchens started shortly after I left Smallbone of Devizes in 2007 and has evolved and grown over the years since then. We have two showrooms. Our main flagship, boutique showroom is based in Haslemere and displays our joinery, hand-made kitchen cabinets which are all made in our workshop in Headley. The style of furniture on display is predominantly our inframe style of cabinetry which is far more suited to the country home and for those who prefer a more classic and traditional style of kitchen. Our other showroom in Eashing, Charter Walk Studio, is focused on our more contemporary and modern style of furniture and showcases our German supplier of furniture, Beeck Küchen which again is a bespoke and high-end supplier of good quality kitchen cabinets.

all our furniture designs were made to measure and made to fit the space and that has always been our main focus since we started. We develop all our designs in CAD and by using an architectural drawing package we are not restricted in any way. We have gained a really good client base over the years, especially since we opened our Haslemere showroom in 2017. Why do you think Kitchens have become so important to the renovation industry? Kitchens are now the focus of the home. Open plan living and a more enthusiastic society wanting to cook, eat and entertain means that socialising in the home is a main choice of people’s busy lives. The kitchen has become the place where families meet at the end of the day and where gatherings now take place. With appliances evolving and means of cooking and cleaning the kitchen is no longer a place that is just functional but more of a place that people want to share and entertain in. How big an area do you cover? Because we are specialist kitchen company and focused on our installations we try and keep to a 45 minute radius of our showrooms. How do you see the future in terms of the evolution of kitchens? It’s forever changing and growing. Technology with appliances is constantly evolving and getting better, quieter, quicker and more compatible with our busy lives. We want the kitchen and the dining area to be one and with smarter storage and innovative design solutions it will become more of a living space than a utilitarian working space. If there’s one piece of advice you could give to a family in the market for a kitchen what would it be? Get your layout right. This is purely driven by your vision of lifestyle within the space and your appliance wish list and is the starting point with

A little bit of history

“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

www.hamptons.co.uk

The earliest record of Haslemere dates to the early 13th century and its quintessential wide high street speaks to a time when the cattle market was a major source of income. Victorian Haslemere became a desirable commuter town for London and one of its best-known residents in this period was Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who lived at Aldworth House in his later years and died there in 1892. Haslemere Educational Museum was established in 1888 by surgeon Sir Jonathan Hutchinson to provide a venue for locals to learn about natural history and offers many fascinating exhibits to this day.

Why move to Haslemere? This bustling town has a lively shopping and dining scene, and several localities each with their own unique appeal, including Grayswood, Shottermill, Shepherd’s Hill and Nutcombe. Its transport links make it a popular choice for commuters and those looking to escape the fast pace of London living, while families are attracted 10

by the elegant period properties and range of amenities. Haslemere is known for its pretty streets lined with characterful tilehung and timber-framed buildings. Its properties run the gamut, particularly in the town centre which ranges from large, detached houses to onebedroom apartments.

The surrounding villages offer yet more diversity, with everything from barn conversions and period cottages to farmhouses and equestrian properties. The Haslemere Leisure Centre has extensive facilities including a swimming pool, fitness centre, sports courts and children’s play area.

along the way. The National Trust manages many local sites, such as the tranquil woodland of Swan Barn Farm moments from the high street and Black Down, the highest point in the South Downs. The Sculpture Park in nearby Churt is set in a 10-acre arboretum with pleasant walking trails and stunning artworks on display. Haslemere benefits from good transport links by road and rail, with regular train services to London Waterloo in under an hour. www. hamptons.co.uk Haslemere is the most southerly town in historic Surrey, but its proximity to neighbouring West Sussex and Hampshire means residents can enjoy the pristine countryside and many attractions of all three counties. Haslemere offers a great choice of state schools at all levels, including local comprehensive Woolmer Hill, St Bartholomews CofE Primary, Shottermill Junior, Camelsdale Primary School and Grayswood CofE Primary School. Additionally, the town is home to the highly regarded independent schools of St Ives and The Royal School, which also has boarding facilities. Occupying an idyllic spot between the South Downs National Park and the Surrey Hills Area of Natural Beauty, Haslemere has some of the UK’s most unspoilt countryside on the doorstep, including the Devil’s Punch Bowl. The Greensand Way footpath begins in the town and stretches over 100 miles to Hamstreet in Kent, taking in many lovely villages and Surrey Hills vistas

Interview with ‘Transform Landsapes’ Tell us a little about the back story of ’Transform Landscapes’ Transform began life as a sole trade business formed by Simon Gray in the 1980s, becoming Ltd in 2001. The business is now run by a team of five directors, with Ben Clutterbuck as MD. Simon is still heavily involved in the business, leading on many landscaping matters with his wealth of experience. Currently, we have over 30 employees, with a client base spread throughout Surrey, Hampshire, and West Sussex. We are a completed garden service, covering design, build, and maintenance. We also have a fully qualified Arboriculture team, who offer services to private clients, as well as local councils. Our quality of work and excellent service are key corner stones to our business. We hold several industry recognised accreditations/ approved contractors’ statuses including BALI (The British Association of Landscape Industries), APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) and the Arboricultural Association. We are also recognised by TrustMark and Safe Contractor. Do you find most clients have a clear image of what they want to achieve in their outside space or do they sometimes look to you for inspiration? It is a mixed bag. Some clients have a clear image of what they want to achieve, whilst others rely on our knowledge and experience to provide an approach and way forward. Our in-house team offers both traditional hand drawn designs or modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings and 3D modelling, which we find helps clients visualise the finished garden and feel more involved in the process. Our Design team and Project Manager work with the client throughout the project to ensure the brief is adhered to, and a beautiful garden is created. Equally, we have worked with clients who have a general idea but no detailed plan, so we use our experience, expertise, and knowledge to shape and install a finished landscape that is complementary to the location and fulfils the client’s budget and brief. Tell us about a project you’re particularly proud of? It is hard to highlight just one as we have had the privilege to be involved with many amazing projects, that each stands out for different reasons. Our Surrey Hill top garden, which was APL best in category 2022, or an infinity edged swimming pool built out of a slope in the garden, which has been shortlisted for two 2024 APL awards.

What are the most popular types of projects you are asked to undertake at the moment? We become involved in a huge range of projects, which is amazing. Our forte is complete garden build projects and, working with either our own designers or in collaboration with an independent Garden Designer or Landscape Architect, we can completely remodel a garden. These projects are extremely rewarding for us, not only as a business in using all our disciplines, but also for our workforce and, most importantly, our clients. We also manage smaller projects that address single elements in a garden such as fencing, terracing, lawns, or creating a planting area/improve planted borders. These are quick turnaround jobs, being great ‘little wins’ for us, and our clients really appreciate the transformative results. Please summarise why house buyers and developers should choose Transform Landscapes for their project? With a range of staff, we can support new house buyers with all elements of their garden. When a house is purchased, the buyers often only visit a few times often within a single season. We can help our clients understand what is in their garden and how they could use or improve the space. It might start with simply helping to manage the area;mowing, cutting back, trimming hedges. Alternatively, the space may not work for the new owners, and they may require a full garden design and build. Whatever the situation, we can help. For developers and those extending or re-developing the house there are many ways that a good landscaper can help complement building work. Our approach to hard landscape construction, is different to that of a builder. We are garden creators. We will look for ways to bring interest, structure, and shape to a garden, using plants and softer structures which often helps to keep costs lower than using only hard features. Where a builder or architect may suggest retaining walls, a structure they know and understand, we will look to use soil banks and planting to hide level changes and create interest. We understand the elements, soil, and outdoor drainage, in a way that builders may not have had the chance to learn. This allows our projects to withstand the weather and allow the user to enjoy their space all through the year.

Interview with ‘Topline Roofing’ Tell us a little about the background of your firm? TopLine Roofing and property maintainance has been up and running for over 10 years and has become a successful trustworthy buisness that has done lots of work for local residents across Surrey,Hampshire and West Sussex. When considering a home renovation where would you place roof in terms of priority? When considering a home renovation we would place roofing as a high priority as it is the shell of the property. Without a secure, watertight roof the internal work would not be able to be completed and be kept to a good condition. Do you welcome customers to asking your advice on different types of materials available on the market? We are more than happy to discuss advice and options of different materials on the market with our customers to determine what would best suit their roofing needs. From a roofers point of view, is the most important message you would like to get across to people when considering a property purchase? From a roofers point of view the most important message to get across to anyone cosidering a property purchase is to take into account the surveyor before you commit. The roof is at the top of the house so therefore should be one of the top priorities to check before you complete the purchase. What aspect of your job do you most enjoy? We enjoy completing a job that has been discussed throughly before, during and after the process of any roofing and property maintainance service with our customers.

Interview with Ben Gane - Charter Walk all our furniture designs were made to measure and made to fit the space and that has always been our main focus since we started. We develop all our designs in CAD and by using an architectural drawing package we are not restricted in any way. We have gained a really good client base over the years, especially since we opened our Haslemere showroom in 2017.

Having done a degree in Design it’s been a great passion of mine. It’s always been important that we are never restricted in what we can design and manufacture for our clients. It was key that

This is purely driven by your vision of lifestyle within the space and your appliance wish list and is the starting point with any kitchen design. If you have a clear idea of your method of cooking and type of refrigeration and storage you want then this will drive your layout. The rest of the design and specification will follow naturally.
