A little bit of history Haywards Heath was an important battle site during the first English Civil War in 1642. Legend has it, the town was later named after a local highwayman called Jack Hayward, and much of the town grew up along the railway which arrived in 1841. In recent years there have been a number of regeneration projects to improve the functionality of the town, such as around the railway station where there is a new Waitrose supermarket, and to create new housing. Highlights include the impressive Southdowns Park development and the popular Bolnore Village area. There are also a wealth of historic houses nearby such as the Wakehurst place and Sheffiled Park thought to date back to Tudor times, both of which are owned and maintained by the National Trust.

Why move to Haywards Heath? The town itself is a prime setting for families, with excellent schooling in and around the town, a fantastic community feel and the beautiful countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep for country walks and leisure pursuits including riding, cycling and golf. One key highlight of town life is the opportunity to participate in the annual Haywards Heath ‘Town Day’, a celebration of the local area which concludes with a firework display in Victoria Park. Haywards Heath is a fantastic place to live where property prices are significantly lower than those in central London, but the commute is manageable by road or rail. In the town centre there are a great many Victorian terraced homes which sprang up to house the workers that came to build the railways. school, The Beeches at Sandrocks and Greenhill Gardens. 9

F

antastic transport links make Haywards Heath a hot spot for commuters. Despite the glorious West Sussex countryside being just on its doorstep, London can be reached in less than two hours by car via the A23 and M25, while Brighton is about half-an-hour down the A272 and A23. Chichester is just over an hour away, and Gatwick airport is only 30 minutes up the road. The town’s railway station forms part of the Brighton main line and is served by regular direct trains to both London Victoria and London Blackfriars, getting you to the capital within an hour. Trains to Brighton are only 20 minutes, and run throughout the day. Despite these major towns being within easy reach, Haywards Heath’s positioning on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty means that country walks in rolling hills are also just a stone’s throw away Running through the middle of the town is South Road, a bustling area that forms the main shopping district. Here there are a number of high street shops such as a Boots, a WH Smith and a Waterstones, as well as the Orchards Shopping Centre, which makes Haywards Heath a haven for fashion lovers. This town will spoil you for choice with places to eat, with there being a wealth of both chain and independent restaurants. There are also plenty of pubs to choose from, as well as many good family run cafés. The Broadway district of Haywards Heath is renowned for its buzzing nightlife with an eclectic selection of popular bars, and Clair Hall hosts a variety of events throughout the year including live music and stand up comedy. A selection of supermarkets means that you won’t have to go far afield for your food shop, including a brand new Waitrose conveniently situated next to the station. There are also numerous hairdressers, barbers, banks and pharmacies, plus three doctors surgeries and churches of varying denominations. Haywards Heath Golf Club sits on the outskirts of the town, offering a 18-hole course set in stunning countryside. www.greatbritishlife.co.uk

Interview with interior design expert Marina Klavina How did you become an interior designer? Although I always had keen interest in design and property development, my first career was in luxury hospitality sales. I was working for Dorchester Collection and represented some of the most luxurious and iconic hotels in the world. I travelled a lot and stayed in the most beautiful properties. My priorities changed when I moved from London to Sussex with my partner. We started a family and I didn’t want to be away from him and our sons anymore. So following my dreams I qualified as an Interior Designer from KLC School of Design, and enjoyed working for the award winning interior design companies before opening MK Design Studio. What is your interior design style? I pride myself on not being a cookie cutter, I approach every project individually and create unique design that works best for the owners and each particular property My projects range from 16th century farm houses to new-builds, but I aim to create an elegant and effortless interiors perfect for relaxed country living. Can you describe the interior design service MK Design Studio offers? Services range from one-off bespoke interior consultations, to full interior design package which starts with no obligation face-to-face or online meeting, where we establish key objectives and priorities for the project. After this meeting a proposal is prepared and if accepted we move on to the next stage – creating a concept that will reflect the style, look and feel of your home. This comes in form of digital concepts, mood boards, sample displays as well as floorplans with proposed furniture layout. Based on the concept I specify colours and finishes, source furniture, lighting and accessories. I design soft furnishings, window treatments, bespoke cabinetry and furniture. Once the costings for the project are approved and signed off, I coordinate purchasing process and installation of the whole scheme. Do you have any favourite projects you worked on? I enjoy every project and challenge, however my favourite houses are characterful country houses full of old beams and quirky features, where no line is straight. Designing window treatments and bespoke cabinetry is not easy but I do like a challenge! What is your favourite part of the job? I love working with fabrics, colours and textures, so creating unique window treatments, cushions, bespoke upholstery with beautiful details is definitely something that I enjoy the most. Why should homeowners hire an interior designer? Often people think that hiring an interior designer is expensive, but it can save you time, money and help you to avoid costly mistakes. Good designer is professionally trained and will find perfect style that works best for you and your home. Designers bring fresh ideas and wow factor that add value to your property. They also have established network of reliable suppliers and tradesmen. Having an interior designer by your side will help you to transform your home without much headache and make it pleasant and enjoyable experience. 20

Interview with the experts at Unsworth Architects Tell us a little of the background of Unsworth Architects? I started Unsworth Architects with the intention of developing a practice that was client focused and collaborative in nature. A practice where the client is central to the design process rather than dictated too. Most of my work prior to Unsworth Architects had been residential in nature, at various scales, from large developments all over the UK, to one off Passiv Haus projects in Norfolk and Cornwall. It was working closely with the clients on the smaller projects, and the joy of doing so, that led me to start Unsworth Architects Ltd. What types of projects get your team most excited? We find domestic, family homes very rewarding. Our new build projects often incorporate older, historically significant buildings, a particular favourite is Stillwater Farm. Stillwater Farm is a ‘Paragraph 79’ home which incorporates the remains of a 15th Century barn. The couple that own the barn have invested a phenomenal amount of time and effort into an extensive landscape regeneration program. It’s a joy to visit and really fulfilling to see the transformation of the site. We also relish the entirely different challenges of a Listed or period property. One of our current projects is a Georgian mansion for clients who live overseas. Every fortnight we send them video updates of the transformation as the work evolves on site. Whilst helpful for the client to see the progress we are making on site, in the long term they will have a video diary of the restoration to look back on, as will we. Finally, one of the more exciting technical developments of late is the ability to carry out a coloured 3D scan of a property. We have a close partnership with a national surveying company who can 3D, colour scan a property with incredible accuracy. This is particularly helpful for our work with period properties, which are not particularly well known for their straight walls and level floors!! Which aspect of your job gives you the most satisfaction? For me, it is the early stages of the project where you are getting to know one another (my clients and I), testing ideas and working towards the final detailed package of information. I love that journey of discovery and design development with my clients. A very close second is watching the final stages of a build come together. I’m a very hands-on-Architect and I’d happily be on site everyday with my tools if I could. I love to see the little finer details go from a sketch to the real thing, then returning a few months after the job is done to see the project lived in; it’s great to see. What words of encouragement would you give a potential client who is hesitating to make that initial phone call? Just call and have a chat, that is what we are here for. I for one am always happy to have a call and help where I can. It doesn’t matter if you have a two bed semi or a eight bedroom Georgian Farmhouse, Architecture is for us all. And while each Architect will have his or her own approach to design, we all want to help our clients get the best out of their projects. That first call may offer a client some comfort that what they want to achieve is possible; and if not, how best to get close to their achieving aspirations. What’s your favourite thing about living and working in Mid Sussex? Mid Sussex offers so much. The countryside is incredibly beautiful. We are right on the edge of the South Downs and yet, within 30 minutes we can be in central London or on Brighton Beach, what is not to like? From an Architectural point of view there are some incredibly beautiful homes of every style and period you could think of. You only need to walk down Lindfield High Street, or Brighton Seafront to appreciate the breadth of Architecture in the area. 22

Ask BLUEPRINZ Architects for all your renovation needs

Tell us a little of the background of Blueprintz? Blueprintz was set up to offer clients no obligation access to an Architect to run through initial ideas and the aspirations that we all contemplate for our homes. This could be in relation to their current home, or on a house they are contemplating buying. We are here to give ideas, answer questions on budgets, planning and listed building constraints, to demystify trade jargon or simply to spend an hour running sketching some possible designs so that our clients have some initial plans to take forward. What types of projects get your team most excited? To be frank, we love all projects, but it is the domestic market and helping to create a ‘home’ that we love. Working with older period properties and modern homes each offer their own enjoyable design challenges. With older and existing properties it’s about balancing the old and the new. With a new build it’s all about understanding the site to create a great home. At Blueprintz the Architects that work with us have experience in everything from Listed Buildings to one off ‘Grand Design’ homes as well as sites with multiple homes, such as self build schemes. Which aspect of your job gives you the most satisfaction? We get a huge amount of satisfaction helping people see what they can achieve with their home or site. It could be a simple conversation about what their budget can achieve, or what can be created within the boundaries of permitted development or Listed Building Consent. As an Architect, it is great to have that moment when you sketch a quick idea with your client and they say ‘We hadn’t thought of that!’. Seeing a client get enthusiastic about a design is very rewarding. What words of encouragement would you give a potential client who is hesitating to make that initial phone call? I would say to just give us a call. Architects are passionate about helping people create the home they want. That first hours’ chat will help to dispel any myths you may have heard about what you can or cannot do, perhaps inspire you to think ‘outside the box’ and provide you with ideas to develop as you work towards a final plan.

Interview with KLA Architects Tell us a little about the background of KLA Architects? I qualified as a Chartered Architect in 2001 and established KLA Architects in the Autumn of 2007. With a strong background across several sectors, (housing, schools, health and restaurants), the private residential projects stood out as the most enjoyable and fulfilling, where the work could be more personal and bespoke, enhancing people’s life quality. So, it was a natural pathway to choose when setting up the practice and it is a privilege to be able to see how our work can make such a positive impact on people’s welfare by enhancing the built environment inside and around their home. We have a reputation for quality extensions and conversion works and often find individual solutions to properties from all eras including Heritage Buildings. This has not only given me the chance to meet and work with a wonderful array of people over the years, it has allowed me to grow the business steadily and now the team I have gathered around me help to manage projects large and small. What type of design projects are most popular at the moment? We are seeing a rise in the number of people re-modelling their homes which may also include converting existing spaces to meet changing needs. Perhaps a loft or garage conversion to accommodate a working from home space or future proofing and creating versatility so one space can have a multitude of uses or simply tapping into under used spaces. Most recently we completed a total refurbishment and extension to an older property using renewable ground source heat pumps to reduce energy consumption. How do I help clients? We translate their brief by creating solutions into the built reality to create a beautiful design that flows and enhances their family living experience. We ensure the problem solving, and eventual design, looks, and feels, effortless – whilst the whole journey from initial brief to completion is a highly detailed, rigorous and thorough process of work. Our services often cover the entire design process from concept sketches through to inspecting the progress and workmanship on site. Is there a project you are most proud of? It would be hard to select one, as every project brings with it its own constraints and opportunities, but helping our clients navigate their way through the process is fulfilling in itself. Ultimately, the most rewarding result is seeing our clients enjoying their new spaces. We never tire seeing how even small interventions can make a huge difference. What would you say are the key strengths of your practice? Our very personal and collaborative service, which includes meeting, listening and exploring ideas with our clients, ensures we meet, and even exceed, their original brief. Our wealth of experience and invaluable knowledge has enabled us to nurture strong professional relationships with local planning officers, building control surveyors, structural engineers, arboriculturists, quantity surveyors and building contractors. This ensures we offer quality with efficiency, saving time and resources whilst delivering successful projects. 34

Interview with Great Walstead School Great Walstead School is an independent school in Lindfield, West Sussex for girls and boys from age 2½ - 13 years. Great Walstead was founded in 1925 by RJ Mowll. It was originally located in Enfield and opened with one boy boarder. That soon grew and the decision was made to move the school to its current site in Lindfield. In May 1927 it officially opened its doors as Great Walstead School occupying the main house and the 250 acres. It has since changed considerably with some 350 girls and boys. We are no longer a boarding school but do operate a very flexible day with children able to join for breakfast and even stay for supper. The school has always had a focus on making the most of its outdoor space and that has certainly not changed. At break times children have as much time to climb trees and build forts as they do to run around and kick a ball. In Year 7 and 8 our pupils have a week of camp building and bush craft skills in the summer term which will culminate in Q-Day. This is very much part of our history and sees each team sleeping out in their camp overnight having a number of challenges such as keeping the fire alight as well as cooking their meals. In the middle of the night “operation banger” takes place in which each team not only defends their camp but raids other people’s in order to collect flags for points. What would you say is special about life Great Walstead? At Great Walstead we focus very much on developing children’s attitudes to learning. We promote skills such as problem solving, resilience, pride and passion as well as risk-taking. By focusing on these attributes every pupil is able to develop a real love of learning and to therefore make excellent academic progress in a school that has allowed them to grow and flourish. As well as a school with happy and engaged learners we are also a school where we all value others and learn to show genuine empathy towards others. This is not something that is rewarded in the same way as our attitudes to learning, but rather by the modelling of that behaviour in all of the staff that the children come across at school. What aspects of the school you particularly proud of? Children are all very different with their own loves and passions. I am proud that we are able to promote and develop all of these passions and interests and enable each of our girls and boys to move on to a senior school that best suits them and that they are well prepared for. What to sporting facilities do you have? We are very fortunate to have our own swimming pool, sports hall, floodlit Astroturf and all-weather netball courts as well as extensive playing fields. That said, we are not just focused on sport but also have invested in a brand new art studio which is supported by 10 resident post graduate artists from Brighton University. Our drama studio and large octagonal Chapel also enable us to develop pupils’ drama and music talents. This year we are putting on a school production of the Lion King. How do you help new pupils settle in? When joining a new school the most important thing is that children feel happy and settled. To do this we provide each new pupil with a buddy or two in their class who shares similar interests. Our teachers also take time to help each new pupil to feel settled but also to help new parents to understand the routines and systems. That link between school and home is incredibly important and we work hard on developing that through very informal and relaxed Friday coffee mornings to the more usual parents’ evenings. 36

ASK THE EXPERTS

37

www.hamptons.co.uk

Interview with the team at Simply In Frame Kitchens Tell us a little about how you came to establish Simply in Frame? I started my working life as a teacher in Cheshire, then lived in Sweden, Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore with my husband and four children. All that travelling really opened my eyes to different architectural and interior styles, so when we moved to the UK in 2014 I took an Interior Design course to find out more…We completed a kitchen extension on our home in 2017 and I asked our builder (Adam Rush at AWR Building and Maintenance Services Ltd) if I could design and supply my own kitchen. Luckily, Adam was happy to go along with that, and he liked the kitchen so much he asked me to work on his kitchen projects going forward. This allowed me to build my portfolio and we haven’t looked back…we still work together on a regular basis.

How would you describe your style? In terms of style, I’m a ‘Classic English Kitchen’ type of designer. I like the elegance and timelessness of a good, balanced design. I’m mainly into classic ‘in-frame’ cabinetry and I think that style sits particularly well with the traditional property stock in Sussex.

Talk us through your customer process? The journey starts with a chat to get a feel for how the kitchen will be used and to get an idea about the clients’ desires. I complete a site survey and sketch a couple of layouts that I think will work in that space. After that, I develop a number of photo-realistic visuals to show the client using my kitchen-specific CAD software and we look at some sample kitchen doors together. If they are happy to proceed, I produce a full design pack and quotation for their approval and we go from there…If the client is embarking upon a kitchen extension it is always good for me to get involved in the early stages once their architectural plans have been finalised, and preferably before the building work begins.

What advice would you give to a client who wants a kitchen that will work for them but also add value to their home? I would say that you should follow your own style, whether that be contemporary or classical, but be mindful of contextual factors such as the building’s original features and the scale of the space. Specify durable door materials that will be easy to refresh/repaint in the future and keep cabinetry simple. Try to make each area of the kitchen easy to use by installing pull-outs for hard-to-reach areas and by zoning your work areas so that everything is to hand. Invest in what you touch on a regular basis, so quality handles and a quartzbased worktop (such as Silestone/Caesarstone) would be good to incorporate, as would appliances from respected brands like Neff, Bosch or Siemens. If you are remodelling and you can find a spare corner for a pantry, that’s always very handy to have!

What’s your favourite thing about working in this area of Sussex? I love working in Sussex because there are some lovely older properties here that are ready for a new lease of life. I’ve been very lucky to have worked with some wonderful clients here, who never fail to bring their own inspiration and enthusiasm to our projects. Sussex is a great place to live-beautiful countryside coupled with the convenience of being able to travel to London or the coast quickly and easily. After sixteen years abroad I think I’ve finally found home! 38

Loop Pile Carpets, also known as Textured Carpets, offer a different style then a Twist Pile Carpet, they can change how a room looks with the different looks they offer, they can come in Weave, Herringbone, Sisal, Ribbed, Stripes and many more. If you are looking for a Stripe Carpet, then a Loop Pile is the best choice, unlike Twist Piles, Loops hold their look better and are not easily moved out of place by Vacuuming or even Walking over. Work Hard, Play Hard & Be Kind BRAMBLETYE School for boys & girls Brambletye is a day and boarding Prep school for children aged 2 to 13 set in 140 acres of parkland, gardens, woodland and playing fields with stunning views over the Ashdown Forest and Weir Wood Reservoir. Three values, Work Hard, Play Hard & Be Kind reflect the school’s balanced approach to learning, childhood and wellbeing. Brambletye is a school which offers an outstanding educational experience delivered by a team of specialist staff, the school combines academic excellence with co-curricular breadth and plenty of playtime ensuring the children are stimulated and inspired in a happy and busy environment. The latest edition of the Tatler Schools’ Guide describes Brambletye as a school “famed for its myriad strengths and educational opportunities” reflecting the imaginative co-curricular programme which seeks to enrich, enliven and expand every child’s journey in pursuits outside of the classroom. Life-saving, website design, bike-maintenance and debating give children new life skills and a vast selection of evening activities ranging from sailing to fencing and chess to cheerleading may even become lifelong passions. Brambletye has excellent facilities, including 7 football and rugby pitches, 5 cricket pitches, a new all-weather pitch, 3 tennis/netball courts, 2 squash courts, a 300m athletics track, a sports hall with climbing wall, cricket nets and a fencing piste, an indoor swimming pool, a zip wire and a 7 hole golf course. There is a 250 seater theatre, a dance studio, a music school, a brand new library and a recently renovated art studio. The Pre-Prep and Nursery are spacious, bright and airy, with playgrounds and playing fields for different ages. The children use the swimming pool weekly and are taught by specialist teachers in music, languages and sport. A high staff/pupil ratio ensures that every child is nurtured and their individuality is valued. Early drop off and after school clubs are a popular offering. When asked to describe a Brambletye pupil, Headmaster Will Brooks says “Every year, towards the end of the Summer term, our Year 8 leavers perform their final show and I’m always left feeling immensely proud of the young people who I see on the stage. I see a great deal of humour, compassion for one another and creative skill; pupils who celebrate each other’s success; pupils who are unafraid to make mistakes and pupils who are confident without being arrogant - these young people have lived the Brambletye experience and developed qualities of character to help them succeed in their senior school years and indeed life beyond” Children may join Brambletye in all year groups and at the start of any term. The admissions process is welcoming and gentle and parents quickly get a feel for the school when they tour with the Headmaster. The team at Brambletye help new families who have relocated to orientate and settle into the community through introductions to current families and new family events. Please contact the Brambletye Registrar for more information on registrar@brambletye.com Brambletye is “a relatively small school bursting with energy and character. The children we had the pleasure of meeting were fun, chatty and confident - three simple words that surely encapsulate the more complex aspirations of every parent. Children at Brambletye laugh, run around, try new things, look out for one another, develop diverse talents, succeed and are happy. And the prefects get to wear pink blazers. Job done.” Talk Education 42

No.1 Broad Street 19th century building with lots of character, originally a tobacconist and barber shop with live in accommodation, it was converted into a restaurant in the 1970’s and has been under a few different ownerships over the years. When we took it on it was looking quite sorry for itself, so we completely renovated the building, gave it a top to toe refit and replaced the kitchen with the most modern high tech equipment to aid our chefs. We use induction system for cooking, it is clean, environmentally friendly, efficient and the team have the best tools available to create amazing dishes for our guests.. 1 Broad Street, Cuckfield, Haywards Heath, RH17 5LJ www.1broadstreet.co.uk Limes Thai Kitchen The restaurant serves a seasonal menu using local produce, in a narrow space with hardwood floors, exposed brick and a bay window facing the street. Room service from the restaurant is available during open hours. 67 High St, Lindfield, Haywards Heath RH16 2HN www.limesoflindfield.co.uk 49

Planning and Building Control Unsure which services you need? If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do. Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning? Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools). You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following: • create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building • affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties • affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes • work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas • affect traffic volumes, road safety or access • change the density of development in an area • use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties • have an effect on existing trees

What is building control? Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval. https://www.midsussex.gov.uk/planning-building/
