echnology company Continental is equipping the wind turbines made by Chinese manufacturer Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology with drive belts. In the unique and patented construction, the belts manufactured at the Dannenberg location in Germany allow the rotor blades to be adjusted at any time without the aid of gears or hydraulics. 8

Continental engineers used an optimal combination of two tried-and-tested timing belt technologies to develop the belts. Back in 2018, Continental invested around €2 million in a new facility at the site in Lower Saxony to meet the Chinese company’s annual demand for over 100 kilometers of drive belts.

Timing belts as an efficient alternative to complex gearboxes Goldwind is one of the few providers on the market to use a drive without a gearbox to adjust the blades, which is becoming vital to be able to respond flexibly to changing wind strengths. “Goldwind relies on timing belts,” says Rolf Marwede, who heads Continental’s location in Dannenberg.


In addition to drive belts, Continental supplies mounting elements, films for reducing wind resistance and hydraulic lines for the wind turbines. “There are some advantages to this. For instance, the system is less complex and therefore less prone to vibrations and disturbances at the top of the nacelle. Our belts are also extremely low-wear and durable.” The belts provided by Continental do not require any oil for lubrication and are very low-maintenance overall and also largely corrosionresistant. In offshore wind turbines in particular, this last point presents a major advantage over conventional metal designs that are permanently exposed to salty sea air. “In comparison with gearbox solutions, a simpler design that uses drive belts is also more cost-effective and more efficient in the long term,” says Marwede. If there is a defect, the system can also be repaired very quickly because only the belt needs to be replaced, not the whole gearbox.

Galvanized steel cords are integrated into the belt’s interior and coated with polyurethane, which furnishes both the teeth and the back of the belt and forms an outstanding connection with the tension member. Polyurethane is particularly abrasion-resistant. The two opposing impact directions of the steel cords and their strands result in neutral running properties, making the belts extremely resilient. It is not uncommon for there to be around 12 million reverse bending cycles.

Continental But what makes the belts used by Goldwind so unique is the special fabric, which is manufactured at Continental’s location in Northeim. The specialist in drive belts is making use of its Synchrochain technology expertise for this application. “The fabric reduces wear and absorbs noise and also provides a much more stable structure for the timing belt. This enables us to significantly improve the belt’s performance yet further,” explains Marwede. The fabric reinforces the teeth and improves run-in behavior, which in turn boosts efficiency. “Ultimately, we have brought together two product groups to develop the ideal solution for Goldwind’s application.” Competence Center Dannenberg provides capacity for future production expansions Continental manufactures the belts for Goldwind at its Dannenberg site, which is a competence center for the production of polyurethane belts within the company. The technology company installed a new facility for this very purpose last year. The hall out of which the facility operates, which was newly built in 2017, offers space for further production expansion.

The best of two product groups combined For Goldwind, it was important to develop a low-maintenance and simpler alternative to the conventional gearbox system. The chosen belt solution was an exact match for these requirements and is based on Continental’s Synchrodrive technology.

Wind turbines are considered clean, with the wind power they provide being the ideal complement to other energy sources. By the end of 2019, wind turbines with a total output of around 650 gigawatts had been installed around the world. By way of comparison, 40 gigawatts would be enough to supply electricity to

every household in Germany. With installed power of well over 200 gigawatts, China is by far the world’s largest wind market. Special fans for hospitals In the wake of the corona crisis in China, it has now become common knowledge that modern fans are used in both operating theatres and quarantine stations in large clinics: Ziehl-Abegg supplied special fans to hospitals

The new manufacturing plant in North Carolina will enhance the speedy implementation of specific customer requirements. In an increasing number of countries, we are seeing a trend towards energy-saving elevator drives and fans. “Sometimes, high energy costs are the reason for the use of Ziehl-Abegg products, sometimes it’s statutory environmental requirements and in Germany for example, it’s for both reasons” explains company CEO Fenkl. This is due to the fact that more and more building operators are focusing on both the purchase price as well as the ongoing energy costs. Even with existing buildings, the investment in replacement fans usually pays off within two years, without the need for any changes to the rest of the ventilation system.

Positive performance by the elevator division The elevator division at ZiehlAbegg also delivered a positive performance in 2019: in a fiercely competitive environment, elevator drives from Kupferzell have become established in the market thanks to their high quality and the very good service. One major plus point is the proprietary control technology across all divisions: frequency inverters from Ziehl-Abegg are increasingly used to control and regulate various electrical items of equipment. The Automotive division secured a good position for itself in 2019 with its ZAwheel electric in-wheel hub drive for buses: conversion solutions that turn a diesel bus into an electric bus within a week are attracting a great

deal of interest from municipal authorities and bus companies. Ziehl-Abegg is also becoming an established force in the new vehicle business. Passengers in London, Brussels or Paris can now experience the benefits of the in-wheel hub motor as a drive unit for new double-decker sightseeing buses. Increase in the number of employees worldwide The growth in sales was also accompanied by an increase in the number of employees: in Germany, Ziehl-Abegg employs 2,400 people (previous year: 2,250), worldwide the figure is 4,300 (previous year 4,100).

GERMAN MACHINE TOOL INDUSTRY UNDER GREAT PRESSURE

Orders received by the German machine tool industry in the first quarter of 2020 were 25 per cent down on the same period last year. Orders from within Germany fell by 22 per cent. 27 per cent fewer orders were received from abroad.

lobal demand for machine tools fell sharply last year due to various chal-lenging factors, but it fell still further at the beginning of the current year,” said Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main, commenting on the results. Only a proportion of the corona effect is currently visible in the books, he pointed out. It will take a few months before the full effect becomes apparent, explained Schäfer. In the metal cutting sector, which serves a broad customer base, the decline in orders is more than double that of the more projectdriven metal forming sec-tor.

Domestic business here in Germany is currently offering a small ray of hope. It rose by a surprising 4 per cent in March. This was mainly due to pro-ject business in the press-making segment. The only region in which orders were up in the first quarter was America, espe-cially Mexico. This was due to automotive projects. Six of the top 15 markets posted increased order levels. These were the USA, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Canada and the Netherlands. “Russia was once the third largest market for our industry. Economic sanctions, however, have resulted in a sharp decline in business. It is all the more gratifying to see a revival from Russia in the current crisis,” reported Schäfer.

Sales revenue also fell – by 18 per cent – in the first quarter. “This is exactly in line with the 2020 forecast we issued in February of this year,” Schäfer contin-ued. “However, it is already apparent that the order figures do not reflect the full extent of the decline, which will eventually be even more severe. Capacity utilisation in the industry also fell significantly by 18 points to 64 per cent between January and April. We currently expect the situation to improve in the second half of the year, provided there is further scaling back of the lock-down arrangements and that production returns to normal. This will determine where the industry will be at the end of the year,” he concluded.

Timken to Acquire BEKA Lubrication, Expanding Its Global Leadership in Automatic Lubrication Systems T he Timken Company (NYSE: TKR), a world leader in engineered bearings and power transmission products, has reached an agreement to acquire BEKA Lubrication (BEKA), a leading global supplier of automatic lubrication systems, for approximately $165 million. The company serves a diverse range of industrial sectors including wind, food and beverage, rail, on- and off-highway and other process industries. BEKA sales are expected to be around $135 million for the full year 2019. “The acquisition of BEKA expands our global leadership in the highly attractive automatic lubrication systems market sector, increases our geographic scale and market coverage in Europe and Asia and will create new opportunities to serve wind and other industrial end markets more fully,” said Richard G. Kyle, Timken president and chief executive officer.

“BEKA is a premier brand and technical leader, and like our Groeneveld business, offers automatic and central lubrication systems that reduce operating costs and extend equipment life. We expect to realize significant synergies, margin expansion and revenue growth opportunities through the combined GroeneveldBEKA business.”

Family owned and operated since its founding in 1927, BEKA is headquartered in Pegnitz, Germany. The company employs approximately 900 people, with manufacturing, research and development based in Germany, and assembly facilities and sales offices around the world. Timken first entered the automatic lubrication market in 2013 with the acquisition of Interlube and then significantly expanded its portfolio and global reach through the acquisition of Groeneveld in 2017.

With the acquisition of BEKA, Timken will become the world’s second largest producer of industrial automatic lubrication systems , which displace manual lubrication methods to improve equipment life and reliability, while reducing the total cost of ownership. The transaction advances the company’s strategy, which is focused on growing its leadership position in engineered bearings while diversifying Timken’s portfolio into adjacent products and markets. The privately negotiated transaction is subject to regulatory review approval in Germany, and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of this year. It will be funded with cash and existing debt facilities. Timken expects the transaction to be accretive to earnings in 2020.

This way, customers can, for example, connect camera solutions or Modbus TCP directly to the robot via the intelligent end-of-arm tool interface. This means that the cable does not have to run along the robot arm externally. All cobots from the Danish manufacturer have an end-of-arm tool with a free drive button, making it easy to program waypoints. he developments of the past 20 years confirm the success of the EEG: Since the law went into force, the share of renewable energies in the gross power consumption in Germany has continually increased, from 6.2 percent in 2000 to 42.1 percent in 2019. F34 Tier 4 Final This 3.4-liter four-cylinder engine is showcased in two layouts. The F34 Industrial Power Unit (IPU) delivers a maximum power output of 74 hp and 235 lb-ft torque. Focused on compact equipment, the F34 Tier 4 Final delivers high torque output to ensure quick engine response in variable load conditions. Attributes such as the 600- hour oil change interval and singleside service access reduce operating costs and simplify maintenance operations over the entire engine lifecycle.

To meet the needs of demanding heavy-duty operations, FPT Industrial is taking the Cursor 9 PowerPack to the Las Vegas Convention Center. The six-cylinder engine delivers maximum power of 442 hp at 1,800 rpm and maximum torque of 1,328 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. FPT INDUSTRIAL RECORDS POSITIVE RESULTS IN CHINA AT SFH

T

he COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect societies and operations around the globe. FPT Industrial, the global powertrain brand of CNH Industrial, has endeavored to mitigate these effects throughout its manufacturing and commercial network by abiding by the health and safety regulations set forth in the different international markets in which it operates. Currently the demand for industrial powertrains remains strong as the providing of essential equipment is something the world depends on to keep moving. In this challenging moment, positive signs of recovery have begun in China, the first nation to weather through the pandemic. With a gradual return to work and a ramping up of industrial activities, encouraging business results in the country are providing confidence to global players. Such encouragement was recently recorded during the month of April at SFH, FPTIndustrial’s jointventure in Chongqing, China.

Following several weeks of shutdown due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in late January, the plant resumed production in early February with extensive measures in place to ensure the health and safety of all employees. Following a carefully designed plan, it restarted at reduced capacity, gradually returning to full operation. Thanks to increased demand in China’s heavy truck market, SFH recorded a new, alltime high monthly production record for Cursor engines in April. It marked a 6% increase compared to the previous record achieved in 2018 when the heavy truck industry in China was at an unprecedented volume peak. As a leading engine supplier for commercial vehicle manufacturers, SFH counts four cylinder and head production lines and two assembly production lines. Among them, the cylinder and head production lines are equipped with 40 large-scale processors.

The plant is operating 24 hours with extra shifts so as to guarantee supply for its customers, including SIH, parent Company CNH Industrial’s joint venture for heavy trucks in Chongqing, to meet the surging demand of the market which had been impacted due to the lockdown in force. Founded in 2007 by FPT Industrial in partnership with SAIC Motor and Chongqing Machine Equipment, SFH is one of the largest engine manufacturers in China and a pioneer in advanced low-emissions industrial engines. With some 700 employees, the joint venture manufactures the Cursor engine ranges for heavyduty commercial vehicles and construction equipment for on- and off-road use - as well as power generation and marine applications at its Chongqing facility. The plant exports part of its production to markets around the world, and produces engines which Stage V and Euro VI emissions regulations for the North American and European markets respectively. he METAV organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main, is inviting all those interested to take part in its METAV Web Sessions – entitled “Let’s talk about innovation” – from 15 to 19 June 2020. “METAV 2020 has had to be postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic, and so now we want to offer visitors and exhibitors an alternative in the form of the METAV Web Sessions,” says VDW Executive Director Dr. Wilfried Schäfer. In good time before the rescheduled METAV in March next year, the METAV Web Sessions will provide a platform which allows users from the metalworking industry to keep abreast of the latest innovations in pro-duction technology. “The biggest challenge for the companies now will be knowing how to ramp up production again after the lock-down, how to stabilise their sales and return their delivery system to full working order in a short space of time,” says Schäfer, describing the situation. he launch of the METAV Web Sessions has been an all-round success. There was plenty of interesting content on a wide range of productionrelated topics and trends according to the motto “Let’s talk about innovation”. The first major virtual metalworking event of its kind was also a technical success, with few if any major hitches. Last week, over 80 METAV 2020 reloaded exhibitors gave 30-minute presenta-tions, some in English, to their customers. The presentations covered all the major product topics from machine hardware and software through to com-ponents and services. At the end of the week it became clear that this was well received. Each of the almost 1,600 visitors from over 60 countries attended an average of just over three sessions. A total of around 5,000 sessions were booked. “The feed-back from all those who took part was overwhelmingly positive. It shows that our exhibitors are more than capable of putting on an impressive show for their customers – even on the Web,” reports an enthusiastic Stephanie Simon, Trade Fairs Project Manager at the VDW and organiser of the METAV Web Sessions. Alma Zicher, who is responsible for marketing at the software developer PSI in Berlin, Germany, points out: “The METAV Web Sessions were planned and run in a relatively short space of time. They represented a great opportunity for us to get in touch with our customers. Our presenters were given incredible support in preparing for this digital form of presentation. The length of

the presentations keeps the whole thing exciting and compact.” And Philipp Dahlhaus, Head of Product Management at Paul Horn GmbH in Tübingen, Germany, adds: “In these extraordinary times, the METAV Webs Session are a great way to raise the awareness of our customers and other interested parties in the latest developments. But where there is light, there is inevitably also shade. Scarcely any other industry is so heavily regulated. The bar has been raised once again in the form of the new European Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Machine tools used for the production of implants and surgical instruments or for micro-milled prosthesis geometries, for example, must offer maximum precision and reliability.

Up to now the machine tool manufacturers have only been marginally affected by the economic setbacks, but they are now facing increasing threats. Medical engineering readily springs to mind when it comes to markets that still hold growth potential. But is there any point in even considering moving in this direction in the short term ? 44 Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Niklas Kuczaty, Managing Director of the VDMA’s Medical Technology Working Group, is somewhat sceptical: “Medical engi-neering is a very complex industry. Those looking to gain a foothold need to show commitment and determination – and above all staying power – before any investment will pay off.” At present, medical engineering represents something of a unicorn in the German industrial landscape.

Quality assurance plays a decisive role here. When it comes to health, there is no room for compromise. “Anyone looking to enter the medical engineering sector needs to know what they’re getting into,” emphasises Christian Rotsch, Head of the Medical En-gineering Department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Tech-nology (IWU), Dresden/ Chemnitz. He regards ISO 9001 certification as a basic requirement. Fraunhofer IWU itself is ISO 9001-certified and it also holds ISO 13485 quality management certification for medical devices.

Focus on manufacturing processes and materials The Fraunhofer IWU Institute is involved in numerous medical engineering projects. Its main emphasis is on manufacturing processes and materials, but also on biomechan-ics and on translating project results into clinical treatments. Interdisciplinary coopera-tion is crucial. One of its key areas is the development of technology for cutting, ablat-ing and forming processes in precision and micro manufacturing. In addition, it is carrying out research into bone-like structures which can be produced from cellular structures, for example from metal foam or with the aid of generative manufacturing processes. There are attempts to enhance material properties through solid forming. Additive manufacturing methods are increasingly being deployed to create customised, patient-specific implants. Nevertheless, Rotsch sees no threat here to the wide range of conventional methods: “Machining and the corresponding machine tools will still be needed in the future,” he points out.

The projects on which the Chemnitz scientists are working involve both medium-sized and largescale machine tool manufacturers. Christian Rotsch sees very good pro-spects for SMEs to enjoy success with special solutions and machines, for example in the field of microprocessing and finishing. Complete process chains are also in de-mand, especially involving robotic support, which Rotsch sees as a “lucrative field with great potential in terms of demand”.

According to Udo Baur, Sales Manager for Germany and Europe at Exeron, it is crucial to adapt to the special needs of this sensitive industry and also to be prepared to offer unusual solutions or other special services. This includes providing support for product releases. The automation cell was initially commissioned at Exeron but not handed over to Aesculap until after the product release. “We know our customers and their stringent demands,” says Baur, “and we have the know-how and the machines to meet these.”

Maximum quality through reliable processes One such example is Exeron, based in Oberndorf am Neckar – a system supplier of die-sinking EDM and high-speed milling machines. It joined forces with Erowa (Büren, Switzerland) and Certa Systems (Nuremberg, Germany), to develop a combined-pro-cess automation cell for Aesculap (Tuttlingen, Germany), a subsidiary of the B. Braun Group and manufacturer of surgical, orthopaedic and interventional vascular medical products. Aesculap’s challenge is that the required component geometries are some-times so small,

Special requirements require tailormade solutions Christian Thiele, Press Spokesman at Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrik Paul Horn, also re-ports on the highly specialised requirements for materials, machining systems and tool solutions. “Experience from other industries is only transferable to a certain extent,” he says. Horn is active in specific fields, offering specialised and unique tool solutions in the whirling of bone screws, for example. The precision tool manufacturer was able to significantly increase tool life by internally cooling the whirling tool while simultaneously preventing the risk of chip accumulation. Whirling is used in medical engineering to pro-duce high-precision and dimensionally stable bone screws made of titanium and stain-less steel. Horn also offers special solutions for surgical instrument machining in the form of specially ground milling tools or special milling cutters with a high milling depth and very narrow cutting width for surgical forceps. The company is also conducting research into cutter coating solutions 46

for medical engineering materials and into cutting conditions for medical products. Christian Thiele also emphasises the great importance of quality management, which is essential for the manufacture of sophisticated medical products. Costs for medical devices continuing to rise IWU expert Christian Rotsch fears that the cost of new medical engineering products will increase dramatically in the future. The Medical Device Regulation requirements are a source of increasing economic pressure for the manufacturers of medical de-vices, which they are passing on to machine manufacturers and suppliers. Neverthe-less, Rotsch is convinced that it will remain worthwhile for machine tool manufacturers and suppliers to enter the medical engineering market. He believes that, if the postpro-cessing stage can be automated, additive processes will give rise to new ideas through the integration of new functions and the trend away from mass-produced towards customised products.

However, the most important success factor for companies always remains their response to the regulatory aspects and quality assurance. Paul Horn has been involved in medical engineering for many years, and the sector’s share of total sales is likely to increase in the future. Automotive and medical engineering have traditionally been the strongest pillars of the company, but medical engineer-ing is currently proving to be a stable market for the metalworking company. The corona crisis has generated a number of short-term and urgent enquiries, such as the recent example of a customer who approached Paul Horn with machining problems in the production of components for a heart-lung machine. Paul Horn is maintaining oper-ations in all areas, which will allow it to react quickly and effectively. However, it’s important to realise, says Thiele, that there is no decline in the demand for tools used in the manufacture of implants and hip joints, for example; they are simply out of the lime-light at the moment.

Messe Stuttgart is therefore planningan AMB Forum for the first time in the present AMB week (14 to 18 September 2020). Featuring specialist industry-specific talks in the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart, an accompanying table top exhibition and different matchmaking services, the Forum will bring together players in the industry who are interested in and need a platform in autumn. The next regular AMB will then be held in its regular cycle in Stuttgart from 13 to 17 September 2022. The new exhibition date creates planning security for every participant during the difficult economic situation at present. Messe Stuttgart actively included the exhibitors and the promotional supporters, i.e.

At the present moment in time with all the regulations relating to hygiene, social distancing or restricted travel possibilities and the current general economic conditions, an AMB such as we know it cannot be staged this year.” According to Bleinroth, the current objective is to develop the new format of an innovative AMB Forum with all participants for September 2020 and 2021, and then plan and implement a successful AMB, International Exhibition for Metal Working, again in 2022.

ETW ENERGIETECHNIK SUPPLIES THE BIOMETHANE UPGRADING TECHNOLOGY FOR A 45 KM BIOGAS GRID With a newly built biogas pipeline, the association “Biogaspartner Bitburg” will in future bundle the raw biogas supplies of up to 48 biogas plants from the region. The 45-kilo¬metre-long pipeline will transport the renewable energy source to a central upgrading plant at the Bitburg commercial, service and leisure centre area “Flugplatz Bitburg” from May 2020. There it will be refined to biomethane, a natural gas equivalent rene-wable alternative and fed into the gas grid.

With this pipeline, the shareholders, SWT Stadtwerke Trier, the private waste manage¬ment company Luzia Francois and Landwerke Eifel AöR, are creating the conditions for an important component of the green and decentralised energy transition. The core of the project is the biomethane upgrading plant of ETW Energietechnik from Moers - based on the established, efficient ETW SmartCycle ® PSA technology.

he biogas plant network in the region has a total potential to produce around 10,000 cubic meters of raw biogas per hour. Since May 2020, an initial seven plants have been sending 1800 cubic meters per hour of biogas to the upgrading plant - which corresponds to an annual volume of around 64 million kilowatt hours. With this volume, a good third of the annual natural gas demand of the nearby district town of Bitburg (14,000 inhabitants) can be covered. 66

The processing plant comes from the CHP and biogas upgrading specialists ETW Energietechnik in Moers. It is based on the established ETW SmartCycle ® PSA tech¬nology, which was developed by ETW‘s own design team. „In the module, up to about 1800 cubic meters of raw biogas are upgraded every hour by removing CO2 and other undesirable elements, converted into biomethane and finally fed into the natural gas grid of the Trier public utility company,“ explains Dr. Oliver Jende,

responsible sales manager at ETW Energietechnik GmbH. Biogas upgrading is used to refine biogas with a composition of about 50 percent CH4, the rest CO2. With this plant, the CO2 portion is separated from the main gas stream, thus producing a product gas interchangeable with natural gas that can be fed into the natural gas grid via a downstream feed-in plant.

The gas components are separated by means of pressure swing adsorption (PSA), a physical process for separating gas components under pressure by adsorption. The separation effect is achieved because one of the components to be separated (CO2) adsorbs more strongly than the other (CH4). This results in an enrichment of the less adsorbing component (CH4) in the gas phase. A particular advantage of the ETW SmartCycle® PSA compared to other biogas up¬grading processes is the dynamic adaptation to fluctuating raw gas compositions. This is done automatically according to the desired purity of the product gas and the volume flow by adjusting the cycle speed. The plant consists of a total of four containers, in which the PSA units, the vacuum pumps, the compressors and the entire instrumentation of the system control are accommodated. „It also contains a comfortable control room from which not only the treatment plant can be operated but also the already connected and future biogas plants can be monitored,“ says Dr. Oliver Jende.

„During the planning stage, we have already provided for the possibility of being able to adjust the future capacity at any time to the expected growth of the agricultural biogas plants“, Dr. Jende looks ahead. The benefits of the ETW process for the users have now also spread around the world. ETW Energietechnik has received another order to deliver the first ETW SmartCycle plant to Canada. The setup will have a processing capacity of 1920 Nm3/h raw biogas and is the first biomethane project for ETW outside Europe. In addition, ETW ist developing projects to produce both biomethane and liquefied CO2 according to EIGA Food grade.. In this combination the plant will enable a 100% CH4 yield, i.e. zero CH4 emissions and even a negative CO2 footprint. Also Land-fill gas upgrading plants are being designed, that are able to extract high amounts of Nitrogen (N2) from land-fill gas with the ETW SmartCycle ® PSA technology.ETW is thus gradu¬ally establishing itself as a supplier of industrial biomethane plants.

Not least for this reason, ETW Energietechnik is currently in the process of doubling its production capacity at its headquarters in Moers. Construction work on the new hall and office building is in full swing and should be completed by August. With these or¬ders and capacity expansions, ETW Energietechnik GmbH can count itself among the companies in the energy sector that are even creating new jobs in these difficult times. That is why it is a matter of the heart for us to help.” Unfortunately, the costs incurred during a stay in a children’s hospice and outpatient hospice care are not fully covered by health and nursing care insurance in Germany.

With around 40,000 children at any time falling ill in a life-shortening way, providing psychosocial support, dignified palliative care and relief via children’s hospices and outpatient support services is critical. “It’s one thing to talk about being socially responsible and showing how much we care. Taking action is another thing altogether. Despite working remotely during the current Covid-19 crisis, we are proud to see colleagues are continuing to share their time and making a difference in their local communities,” adds Frank Stengel.

ven before the coronavirus pandemic, industry was facing a massive upheaval. “Industry 4.0”, “advanced manufacturing” and “on-demand production” are some of the buzzwords accompanying this upheaval and ushering in a new industrial age. The automotive industry, in particular, is experiencing a complete system change. New fleets with alternative drive technologies must be developed and brought to market. It can be safely assumed that the new production processes required will go beyond anything now offered by “Industry 4.0”. As one of Germany’s strongest automotive regions and a key production location for other industries, the companies, the research and the politics of the Saarland have a significant impact on the development of “Industry 4.0”, across nearly all areas of production and process management. 76

Saarland companies are implementing Industry 4.0 principles The German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) has its headquarters in Saarland. It is regarded as one of the birthplaces of “Industry 4.0”, so it is no wonder that Saarland companies recognised its potential early on and have been exploiting it across multiple sectors. Bosch Rexroth set up the world’s first “Industry 4.0” assembly, at its Saarland plant, and received the 2014 ‘Industry 4.0 Award’ for this technological step. Two hundred different hydraulic valves from two thousand different individual parts are now produced on one production line, where six different lines were previously required. Line workers are supported by help texts, videos, and light signals. This technological step forward has enabled the company to boost productivity, reduce inventory

stock and save half a million euros a year. Logistics specialists are also repositioning their services and creating intelligent interfaces with their customers.

The work focuses on transferring the results of applied research into industry, and on collaboration in research projects to solve specific industry problems. Transforming industry is a collaborative task The example of Germany‘s Saarland shows that industrial change and development in the sense of Industry 4.0 requires the cooperation of all actors. One obvious prerequisite is cooperation along the entire value chain, including research. Optimal siting and expansion conditions ensure entrepreneurial investment in the future. Informed and creative political decisions can improve the framework of conditions for resident companies. Germany has established a stimulus package of 130 billion euros in response to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
