Pet Food Variety

More than just the Spice of Life

D

ogs and cats have evolved at our sides for well over 10,000 years each. While dogs eventually became more dependent on humans for food, cats have remained skilled predators, but will consistently accept handouts from their hooman counterparts. Commercial pet food came into the picture around 100 years ago, unintentionally contributing to the detriment of cats’ and dogs’ well-being. As convenient as it may be, repetitively feeding a highly processed diet (like extruded dry kibble food) eventually created an alarming abundance of new maladies in our beloved pets. For example, overfeeding unnaturally high carbohydrate foods combined with a sedentary lifestyle has led to obesity, diabetes and joint problems that are worsened by indiscriminate breeding. Pets have also been stricken with new diseases, including dental disease and various cancers that were present neither during their ancestral prey diet days, nor throughout domestication on their human food diet. So, how does this relate to variety? Prior to domestication, dogs (wolves) and cats ate a large variety of prey animals that varied by region, seasonally, and by what they could catch or scavenge. During domestication, they ate our food, from our homes, our kitchens. Over time, that incorporated a wide variety of ingredients, including farmed meats, wild game, eggs, and fish as well as our harvested grains and produce. To better coordinate with our diets, dogs actually evolved to digest carbohydrates, whereas their wolf ancestors still cannot. Proportionately, dogs enjoyed their human fare more than 99% of their domesticated time, while commercial pet food has been their staple for less than 1% of their time with us. From strictly a sales perspective, many commercial pet food companies mistakenly promoted feeding the same processed food for a pet’s entire life. Obviously bad advice if you are wise enough to seek the many health benefits from dietary variety, as is overwhelmingly recommended for humans. Eating the exact same set of food ingredients each and every meal, each and every day can lead to many health concerns, including food sensitivities, allergies, and refusal to eat (diet boredom) as well as more serious nutritional deficiencies and toxicities. Not only that, it just doesn’t make any nutritional sense, regardless of purported claims of processed pet foods being “complete & balanced.”

by Norm Shrout

Recently, some questions came up about a heart disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs as it potentially relates to diet and Taurine (an amino acid building block for proteins.) Here’s where dietary variety can help make a difference. Staying on one type, flavor, brand or format of food can severely limit a dog’s overall nutrient intake, including Taurine and its building-block precursors. Cats, unable to bodily synthesize their own Taurine, must rely completely on dietary Taurine. What if your current pet food is low in those essential nutrients, or has a less usable version of them by your pet? A well-varied menu of fresh and less processed ingredients (including raw diets) offers a diversification of all nutrients as well as an opportunity for better overall pet health. This philosophy mimics a pets’ ancestral diet, which became balanced for their nutritional needs over time, in a more natural way, without the excessive overuse of chemically synthesized vitamins and minerals. And savvy pet parents know that ingredient quality is much more important than an estimated full spread of artificial vitamins and minerals. Additionally, a truly dog or cat-appropriate diet is rich in meat content and plentiful in high quality Taurine. Sadly, many dry pet foods do not fit these criteria. However, this upgrade can easily be accomplished by simply adding a protein topping to your pet’s food, like raw or cooked meat, fish, organ meat and/or eggs. Or have you tried dehydrated or freeze-dried pet food? These fresher alternatives to processed dry and canned food are quickly reconstituted and help assort a pets’ diet in an abundantly more nutritious way. Research shows evidence of better dog’s health from the addition of fresh produce, as well. And the good news is that smaller, conscientious pet food manufacturers focused on pet-well-being are rapidly releasing these less processed pet food alternatives that will ultimately be more nourishing for our fur families. The bottom line is that most pets are thrilled with a meat-focused meal offering as well as (gradual and) consistent diet changes. Who eats leftovers every single meal for years without complaining, anyway? By offering this diet diversity, you are giving your pets a better opportunity to both enjoy their meals and to thrive. Based on undeniable anecdotal evidence, we are confident that this type of thriving through variety helps protect their longevity. Stop by your local pet supply store and ask for more information on dietary variety. They can help you put all the pieces together to create the perfect pet food regimen for your companion carnivore family.

Emotional

Support AnimAlS By Anne Lambert

ESA’s or Emotional Support Animals are one of the most misunderstood categories of assistance animals. the issue is, even to professionals, murky and undefined. This article will attempt to disclose the limitations of these animals and the rights of them and the people they provide comfort for. First, let’s define how ESa’s are different from Service animals. First and foremost, they are regulated by different branches of the government. Service animals are regulated by the Justice Department under the americans with Disabilities act (aDa). Emotional Support animals are defined and regulated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Fair Housing act of 1988. the reason for

this is that Service animals are allowed in public anywhere the general public is allowed and must be either a dog or a pony. they must be trained to do specific tasks that assist their handler in living their daily lives. ESa’s are allowed fair access to housing for people with disabilities to comfort them in their homes. Emotional Support animals can be almost any animal, within reason. Unlike Service animals, ESa’s don’t need any training. their specific duty is to bring comfort to their person. a difference developing during this time is that ESa’s, were allowed on commercial air flights. their lack of preparation and training for the crowded conditions on a flight, and their reactions to those unfamiliar conditions has led to a banning of ESa’s from most commercial flights. the Fair Housing act covers most aspects of renting to individuals needing ESa’s for daily life. Breed Specific Bans do not apply to ESa’s unless the apartment complex or home rental company’s insurance Company has in place a breed specific ban, with an accompanying penalty to the complex. Even in that case, the insurance Company could be charged with discrimination. a no Pets policy is not allowed either. if the apartment or home rental company does allow animals, then all their rules for the behavior and treatment must be followed. the only types of housing differing from this rule are rental homes owned by private individuals who do not use a commercial company and do not own more than three homes for rent and housing and apartments owned by organizations or private clubs that provide only to their members. Documentation is required for an ESa from a mental Health Professional or Doctor, stating that this animal is needed for the disability of the handler. it must be called an Emotional Support animal, on letterhead, signed and dated by the doctor. it should, for the protection of the disabled individual and the animal, be renewed every year.

Balloons,

Balloon Fiesta & Dogs O

by Dr. Daniel Levenson, DVM

ne of the most wonderful things about Albuquerque or even New Mexico in general is the wonderful weather and how it lends itself to some incredible ballooning. And of course, the Balloon Fiesta itself is something that all ‘Burquenos are proud of. This can almost be considered a religious season with the harvesting of green chile, the State Fair coming to town and the International Balloon Fiesta - basically all within a 2 month period! Many dog owners, though, also know this season to be a time of high anxiety for some our best friends - the storms of the monsoon season and the launching of many balloons in our skies. Many of our dogs seem to go from mild nervousness about those big scary things in the air to full-blown panic mode. And there is no rhyme or reason for it; these kind of phobias (storms and balloons) don’t seem to be very logical in our minds. But they are very, very real for our four-legged friends. It seems either the sounds (thunder, rain, the burners on the balloons) or the sights (lightening, the balloons overhead) can be equally frightening and many times both sensory stimuli play a role. So what can we do to help? Well, after getting some advice from Dr Jeff Nichol (veterinarian with a practice specializing in behavior medicine) here are some ideas. First, some of our pets do well by just providing a quiet, low-lit room with no windows or dark blinds to ride out the scary times. Maybe even a fan or classical music on low to drown out the noise. There is even a soundtrack that was designed specifically to work with a dog’s brain and it is called Through a Dog’s Ear - it can be downloaded and played. In addition, try providing the meals through a food-dispensing toy or puzzle, or maybe frozen food in a Kong toy to keep them busy. During Balloon Fiesta, get them outdoors to use the bathroom

very early before the balloons invade our skies and then back inside till it is “safe”. The ThunderShirt can sometimes work for mild anxiety as well - with no real side effects. If your dog is still anxious after trying these tricks, then it is time to talk to your veterinarian about supplements or medications that might help. There are a few good, clinically-tested supplements that are NOT drugs but can help induce some serenity and calmness in their world. They don’t work instantly and not for all situations, so you need to start NOW if you want to try them. But sometimes the anxiety is so bad you will temporarily need true medication. These medications are only available by prescription and can have side effects - so talk to your veterinarian about what might work best for your pet. There is nothing wrong with helping them get through these “scary” times. Remember, these phobias are very real to them and can really make their lives (and subsequently yours, too) miserable. Simple planning during the Fiesta and beyond will pay off in the long run.

RESCUE CATS

Felines & Friends New Mexico The mission of Felines & Friends is to provide a second chance for cats and kittens so that they may be able to live out their lives in loving homes. BY BOBB I HE L L E R

P

eople often ask me how I became an animal rescuer and, of course, how Felines & Friends began. My career in rescue started back in 1985, when I grew tired of picking up dead cats that I found along the road, just a block down from my house in Los Angeles. A nearby elderly lady (Sylvia), who had never taken either of her two original cats to get sterilized, found herself feeding some 30 cats. Over the next several years, we managed to trap all but one crafty old girl; we had the adults sterilized, and worked with the kittens until they could be adopted following sterilization. I was then practicing what is now known as Trap/Neuter/Return. At the time of Sylvia’s passing in 2006, just shy of her 95th birthday, she was down to her last old, semi-feral cat who died later that year in a loving home, at aged nineteen. Felines & Friends started in 1990 in Los Angeles, where it continues today. In fact, we just completed a joint rescue of a wonderful cat name Tori. She was found in a backyard with her three kittens, and she subsequently developed a particularly virulent strain of the Calici virus. While the shelter vet

recommended euthanasia, we knew that Tori simply needed a feeding tube for 7-10 days and the loving care of a foster home. Tori has a made a full recovery and is available for adoption in Los Angeles. The New Mexico Chapter of Felines & Friends started in 2001 with a single black cat, named Mystere, who was living in an abandoned car next to my office off of Cerrillos Road. The following year, Mystere moved to Chicago with her new “forever family.” We officially became Felines & Friends New Mexico in December 2009, and have since placed well over 4,000 cats and dogs, as well as sterilized hundreds of feral cats. While there are many dog rescue organizations, Felines & Friends is the ONLY organization of its type in Northern New Mexico. As such, we are regularly contacted by other organizations and shelters throughout New Mexico with requests for help with special cases. We try to accept as many of these cats as space permits. At the end of last year, we accepted a transfer of 14 cats from a hoarding-situation in

Southern New Mexico; many of these cats required specialty veterinary care. A few days later, one of those cats presented us with a litter of six (6) adorable kittens; all of whom have been placed. However, Adelina and several other young adult cats are still waiting for their “forever homes.” This year we have accepted several elderly cats as well as a few adults who required life-saving surgery in order to prepare them for adoption. Prospective adoptive parents are screened carefully and must sign a contract, which, among other stipulations, states that any adoptee who cannot be kept (for whatever reason), must be returned to Felines & Friends. All cats and kittens adopted through Felines & Friends are FELV/FIV tested, current on FVRCP and rabies vaccinations, spayed or neutered [done at 3lbs] and microchipped. The mission of Felines & Friends is to provide a second chance for cats and kittens so that they may be able to live out their lives in loving homes. Some cats simply need time to become socialized, while others require extraordinary veterinary care.

The cats that we rescue are housed at our Adoption Center inside of Petco, (which is funded by the Petco Foundation), or in a foster home; and we can never have too many of those. Teca Tu at De Vargas Shopping Mall has generously provided a large habitat space that allows one special cat to live while it awaits adoption. All of these efforts require volunteers and funding. Felines and Friends receives no governmental assistance and relies solely on donations and small grants. Again, volunteers and foster homes are always in short supply. If you’re not in a position to own a cat full-time nor are you able to add another feline to your family, volunteering is a great way to meet new people and get a “kitty fix.” For more information about Felines & Friends New Mexico, please visit www. fandfnm.org.

B

y Mrs. Tea, copyright permission given to Pet Magazine for printing this article only in the October issue along with one of the accompanying photos.

Going around Albuquerque with my two 12 pound dogs seems a necessity. If I didn’t take them with me, they’d lie around home getting old too fast and bored. When folks see them, they say or motion, “They’re cute.” Some have to tell me about their pets. An animal behaviorist at Hobby Lobby gave my dogs kisses. Really, I don’t look for such attention, but I’ve gotten used to it and say, “Thank you”. When we first started shopping together, my pets had to abide by the NO BARKING rule. It took Kali three times of leaving the store and being put in the car when we first went shopping. When Winston joined us, it took him once to learn. To make sitting comfortable in the shopping cart, I lay down a towel or a few of my recycling bags. We’ve a lot of very dog friendly stores in Albuquerque: Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, Dollar Tree, Ross Dress for Less, Target the thrift stores, and all the hardware stores. Some employees even offer biscuits. The best destinations we’ve visited yet are the local trails. Our most frequent is Piedras Marcadas (which translates to “Marked Rocks”) in Petroglyph National Park. It begins on Jill Patricia Street NW, off Golf Course Road, South of Paradise Blvd. It has no fees. Doggie bags are supplied just in case an owner forgets. The paths are well worn. I bring water and a bowl for us.

Ever since I started taking my pets out with me like this, I’ve discovered that they listen and respond better to me than any dog I’d yet to own. They don’t run out the front door like greyhounds or get lost. They stay with me and do what I say because we’re a team. That element of belonging is high.

Gossip!

Golden Touch Pet Grooming By Monica Pompeo

t was a busy Saturday when I dropped in on Lois Landavazo, owner of Golden Touch Pet Grooming; and before I left, it was crystal clear to me that Lois, herself possesses the ‘golden touch’ that gives her pet salon such a warm, inviting vibe. A curved, wooden, park-style bench right outside the shop’s front door had me convinced that this is a place where people and their pets feel at home. Jessica and Julia were busy grooming dogs at their stations when Danielle, Lois’ daughter, walked out from the back of the shop cuddling a Chihuahua in a fluffy pink towel; she then placed him in a kennel with his two siblings. All of the dogs (and there were many), seemed happy and content in the kennels that face the front of the very open, sunny shop. Bailey, a lovely 12-year old black Lab, was lounging on a satin, almond-colored pillow near Jessica, who appreciates being able to bring her to work. A Siberian Husky and a tiny Yorkshire Terrier (in separate kennels), were busy getting to know one another nose to nose, while a nearby blue-eyed Boston Terrier pup playfully pawed at a white towel that lined the floor of his kennel. His upstairs neighbor, a very pretty Maltese-poodle cross, gave no one the time of day. A handsome Pomeranian stared straight ahead, a black and white scarf fitted around his neck enhanced his regal look (scarves, as well as flowery, barrette-style bows, are all

handmade by Lois). A long-time customer came in to retrieve Wookie, her tiny, now-nicely-groomed pooch. Then there was Little Bear, an American Eskimo-poodle cross who seemed to be enjoying himself until he spotted his owner walk thru the front door. Emotions can run high in a pet-grooming salon! Golden Touch has been at its Montano and Fourth Street location for six years, but Lois has been in the grooming business for 16; her landline telephone number has never changed! She chose ‘golden touch’ as a way of paying homage to her beloved Golden Retriever, Lobo de Oro, II. Cherished photographs of many canine clients hang in frames on the wall within a cozy waiting area that’s niched out by architecture that lends contrasting wall and window angles to the shop’s façade. An interesting mix of kitschy knick-knacks makes for a light-hearted atmosphere. I couldn’t help but chuckle when I read a plaque hanging on the wall, “Unattended Children Will Be Given an Espresso and a Free Puppy.” Needless to say, the overall ambience at Golden Touch is ‘authentic retro,’ where

many years of pet-loving is apparent. Every first Saturday of the month, Danielle offers free nail clipping to any and all furry pets (think bunnies and cats, too). She’s determined to, “make a difference, one paw at a time.” I’m told that the waiting line for the free service often extends out the door and winds thru the parking lot to Fourth Street. A polydactyl feline was among her very first, freeclipping clients. As Danielle likes to proclaim, “Big or small, six toes or ten, we groom and love them all!” Lois and her ‘golden touch’ grooming crew look forward to meeting new pets, and they’d like to remind everyone to book ahead in light of the upcoming holidays in November and December.

T

he Verdes Foundation has a long history of creating community inside of their medical cannabis dispensaries. All Verdes locations are a place where everyone is welcome, including your furry family members. As a dispensary that is operated by a nurse, they understand the role that pets play in the overall wellbeing of the patients they see every day. They make sure that your pet feels at home through the warm welcome they receive when they walk through the dispensary doors. Many of Verdes’ medical cannabis patients are accompanied by their furry friends when visiting the dispensary. Not only do Verdes’ Customer Services Representatives have a treat waiting for pets at the counter, Verdes has also built in a puppy potty break area at their Albuquerque location. After stopping at the outdoor sanitation station (complete with lush grass, a bench and leash holders) patients can bring their pets inside with them. Verdes believes this helps avoid pets being left in cars, which is extremely deadly in the New Mexico heat. According to PETA, “on a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to 100 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 109 degrees in less than 10 minutes.” In the desert sun, the car temperatures can be much higher. Patients aren’t the only people encouraged to bring their pets to Verdes, staff can too! Spend a day at the administration offices you’re likely to meet Rustie, a Heeler mix and Finn, a Chow mix. These friendly pups are two family members of Verdes office staff. Verdes encourages administrative team members to bring pets to work. They believe it helps reduce stress and boosts moral among the company. Plus, it gets the dogs out of the house and allows for common species to interact which is great for most animals.

a series of receptors that run throughout the body,” he says. “The cannabinoids interact with the receptors in the body and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea.” His article on PetMD https://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/cannabis-oil-dogseverything-you-need-know Unlike some traditional pharmaceuticals for dogs, medical cannabis and CBD have no threatening side effects with the proper dosage. However, it is important to note THC, the chemical compound in cannabis responsible for the “high” effect, can be dangerous to animals. THC overdoses in dogs in particular lead may to medical complications and, in extreme cases, death. • Cannabis Oil • Hemp Supplements • CBD Treats • Cannabis Salves/Lotions • Cannabis Capsules All the products are available through a simple google search or on these trusted websites: https://canna-pet.com/, https://phytoanimalhealth.com/ https://www.innovetpet.com/products/purcbd, https://www.getcbdpet.com/

How do you administer these products? Oils can be dropped onto food or straight onto the tongue, the recommended ammount is 3-15 drops once a day. CBD treats can be given to treat symptoms such as paranoia or arthritis. Supplements can be open and spread over food or folded into peanut butter or cheese. Consult your vet if you are worried about dosing and/or administering your pet’s medicine.

Medical cannabis has helped millions of people who are suffering from various ailments and those who are seeking relief. What’s to say that our dogs cannot find relief from certain aliments as well? Now more than ever researchers are finding that medical cannabis can provide positive benefits for dogs as well. Certain common illnesses that affect our furry friends are cancer, seizures, and anxiety. Cannabis and CBD can both be used to help treat these. However, most products on the market are either hemp derived (without THC) or are strictly CBD. Relief is provided as the cannabinoids in marijuana interact with the endocannabinoid system Dr. Shu, founder of VETCBD, explains. “It’s

Bear

Blondie

Owner: Geri Lynn Matthews

died peacefully alongside his family of 13 years on Friday, June 29, 2018. When Bear arrived in our home in 2005, we instantly knew he wasn’t like most dogs. Bear was a gentle soul, never growling or nipping at anyone, but instead greeting them with an ecstatic wagging tail and an adorable toothy smile. Bear was an intelligent pup, able to get out of any cage or crate that came his way. Above all things, Bear was family. He grew up with my three children, then 5, 7 and 10 years old and unfortunately as they got older so did he. As the years passed, the children were able to do more, while Bear was able to do less. No longer jumping as high as he used to, running as fast as he used to or having the energy to scamper around our living room chasing the children or his favorite purple rubber toy. Even when his health declined, he still remained the happy and loving dog he was. Although we miss Bear, we are at peace knowing he is in a much better place. The moment he took his last breath God swept his innocent soul and flew him straight to heaven. Bear gained his furry wings that he rightfully deserved and is able to be that energetic happy puppy once again. Even though Bear and his family are no longer physically together, he will forever remain in our hearts.
