WHAT’S BEEN GOIN’ ON WITH FASHIONED? April not only marks the month that Coachella kicks off, but more importantly, it kicks off the month that our lovely Fashioned Mag gal, Cassidy Anderson...is GETTING MARRIED!!!

Our EIC, Cyndi, celebrating FM Gal, Cassidy’s shower as she readies herself to become Mrs. Hayden Funk this month (April 23rd)....and we can’t wait!

(Photo, above): Tune in to our YouTube channel, as FM’s Fashioned Gals share on beauty, fashion, make-up, highlighting, contouring and more! (Photo, left): FM’s stylist, Virtuous Arevalos @VanityisVain selects her favorite Springtastic must-haves, fun #OOTD. “So, I loved the victorian style of the blouse and paired it with the denim shorts from Nordstrom’s to give it a nice Spring look. I went with a simple sandal--it allows the shirt to be the staple piece. The round sunglasses are a trendy must-have and the Gucci eyeshadow palette provides nice neutral and subtle pink shades. The flower headbands are so fun and are the perfect accessory for those going for the Coachella look. The purse is from Kohl’s and has a nice floral pattern. Lastly, a soft color lip by Nars, which is a really good makeup brand.”

BB

HELLO! FROM CYNDI

Well what do you know? I think it’s possible we may just get this magazine out before April is officially over! Deemed as one of my busiest months ever, it is with excitement and fervor that I write to you, thrilled about our April issue of “Steppin’ Out or Springing Into!” Why steppin’ out or “springing forward”, you ask? Why not! There is so much that happens when one steps out or onto something! You step into your day; one steps into their calling; Symbolically, stepping represents putting an end to something! When I think of stepping or springing, I also think of going from one level or place, to the next. By definition, to step is to “…an act or movement of putting one leg in front of the other in walking or running; springing is to “move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward…” In a nutshell, not only did we feel it was fitting for April’s issue, we are stating our call that it’s time to spring forward! What better timing than now? Because of our theme of springing into and moving forward, there was none other we thought to fit the bill of rapid movement, than fitness guru, Kelsey Lee Hollenbeck! Kelsey takes us through the importance of fitness, sharing other tidbits on life, as well! We also get to hear from Fashioned Magazine’s very first “It Girl,” Brittany Treglia! Not only talented (she shares some ways to shop (and dress) like your favorite iconic character. She did such a great job a couple of months ago offering her styling insight to a reader’s dorm room, that we asked her help us spruce up your space this month by keeping the cost down, but sharing her wisdom on ways to make your living space feel like new! Every issue we want to be intentional our content, photo shoots, so our month is thematic, inspiring and encouraging. For this month we felt strongly about sharing with our readers the importance of celebrating the idea of a new season. Sometimes we tend to get stuck and rather than stepping forward and not looing back, we can tend to remain in our sticky situations, not really knowing how to make things better or how to improve. One of the words of wisdom I try to live by is “…one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead…” (Phil. 3:13) When trying to move on or enjoy a season of “new”, which spring so often brings, it’s important to do so with the idea of “out with the old, in with the new”. I can think of numerous times where I knew I needed to move forward so that I could walk in a new season, but maybe I was unwilling, wanting to hold on to something familiar, though it may not have been healthy or good for me. I can think back to my teens even, being in toxic relationships and not letting go, when they were not benefiting anyone or anything.

Maybe for you, it’s something else, and you have been wanting a fresh start. Well, why not? And further more, why not TODAY?!? You deserve the very best, no matter what others may say. You deserve a beautiful life, even despite your sturggles, thoughts and doubts. It’s time to let life and the things around you treat you with love, honor and respect, starting with YOU! Surround yourself with loved ones who will be in your corner, TEAM YOU! “But you don’t know what I’ve done, or how I’ve behaved,” you may say. Well, if you really want a fresh start, forgive yourself or those who hurt you, and take that first step to something new and beautiful, no matter how scary. One of my sisters did that very thing a little over a year ago. She not only made a decision to start a new life, she did a very brave thing and moved out of state in order to try something new, different...healthier. Today can be the start of a beautiful new life for you and those around you. Go on, step into it! It may take courage, strength, and you may be afraid, but I beleive in you! Don’t be robbed another dy of your beautiful life. Give it a try! I hope that as you read, you are encouraged, inspired to be the best fashioned version of yourself! Until next month, cheers to you and stepping into a new you this season of 2016! With much love, Cyndi

ALL IN STRIDE...

AS TOLD TO CYNDI GALLEY BY KELSEY HOLLENBECK Both running a little behind for our coffee session, we each make our way to a table of one of the yummiest and quaintest of coffee-style houses in Orange County. Once seated, we rummage through the menu, wanting to eat enough to hold us over to dinner. True to form, she orders the perfect portion of Caprese on tasty Crostini.; we both ordered our coffees of choice. Happy to finally be meeting, we chat on end. With deep drive and passion about life, our chat session ends quicker than we realized. It was a Kelsey is everything one would imagine her to be ... and more! FM: You are the epitome of a workout guru, have you always had a passion to work out? When did you realize this would become a career for you? KH: Being maybe five or six, I’d always see my dad using the stationary bike and free weights to exercise; so I remember wanting to be like him and trying to follow suit (although I could barely touch the tip of my toes on the pedals). That seed grew into becoming a high school Freshman using the Elliptical for 30 minutes for sake of feeling confident in my dance or cheer team uniforms, which turned into learning to use free weights and equipment, taking group exercise classes and finding my confidence around the gym. Friends began to see me as the go-to for workout and healthy eating advice, and after moving from my hometown to the ‘big city’ of Seattle as an ambitious 18-year old, I decided to continue paying it forward by beginning to train and coach others.

FM: Who is Kelsey? What is it about you that makes you unique?

6

www.Fashionedmagazine.com

KH: I love this question! It’s the kind we should all be able to answer in confidence – and one I’d stumble around on for most of my teens and early twenties. I’m just someone learning how to be the best me I can, while trying to add value to as many lives as possible along the way. Outside of being someone in the entertainment or fitness space, I’m not much different than most people. I love and care deeply for my friends and family, enjoy the simple things in life like meaningful conversation, fun food (and a lot of it), sleeping in, making memories with great company and challenging myself to do more of what I love. I’m also a wife to a Jesus-loving police officer who was previously active duty in the Marine Corps, and that has definitely shaped much of my life. I’ve been told numerous times by ‘important industry folks’ to be less candid, less modest, less faith-centered, less husband-centered. I have no interest in following any of that advice, and know those are some of the reasons I’m unique from so much that’s out there. FM: What inspires you to work out? KH: Personal accountability to simply feel and function well at the things I do. The backbone of #makefitmatter is about taking care of your temple and making fitness a lifestyle component so you can operate better in whatever it is you do- and that’s really good accountability for me to stay committed to squeezing a workout in where I can and being in motion as often as possible. FM: What would you say to encourage someone who isn’t motivated to exercise? (Cont. on page 7)

Face your why- the reason having a fit and able body matters, and having an answer to the question of what does it matter if you don’t? Usually the honest answers boil down to reasons like overcoming deeply rooted self-esteem issues, lost time feeling less than their best, or being able to keep up with their kids or grandkids, who they are to their loved ones –the things that matter most, and being fit and able can add so much value to all of it. FM: We believe that everyone is uniquely fashioned, what are some different ways someone can enjoy working out? KH: If it has to be a gym, then definitely keep it fresh by avoiding the same exact exercises in the same exact order every workout. Using a variety of free weights, machines and cables (if available) can help steer clear of the mundane. I’m a big proponent of utilizing bodyweight movements, even in a gym, so the more someone can incorporate those, the better the odds are of enjoying their sweat sessions rather than dreading some sort of repetitious routine on the same equipment. It’s so important to remind others that a gym isn’t required to make fit matter, and condition their body. We were designed to move, fashioned – really, to be active, so that could be anything from gardening, brisk walks, hiking, cleaning the house with a few bodyweight squats thrown in, riding a bike, horseback riding, water sports, playing with the kids, parking further away and incorporating more steps throughout the week, taking the stairs … I’m sure I could keep going, but you get the gist! FM: You’re probably up and up and in the know about workout trends – what are some of your favorite workout trends that you’ve found to be effective?

ently to activity levels and nutrition variables; but for general conditioning, three to five days of focused exercise lasting anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes is a great and practical range. That’s the frequency and duration I follow, but am also intentional to plug in other ways to be active, doing things like riding, hiking and squeezing in extras like taking the stairs and avoiding up-front parking. FM: Anyone who knows you, knows of your love for animals- what is your spirit animal and why? KH: This is debatable depending on who you ask, but I’d say it’s definitely… a cat. Let’s keep it real- if I could be pet, fed, snuggled and allowed to sleep at my leisure, with the occasional outbursts of unexplained energy, I’d take it! Not to mention, cats are super agile, but sturdy – you know? They can ninja off rooftops without breaking into pieces. That’s pretty aspirational. FM: In the world of body-image, there is probably a lot of pressure. What are some of the pressures you have faced in this fitness industry and how did you overcome and/or survive them? KH: So much, of all sorts—I’m definitely not the rock hard body, the year-round spray tanned type or the ultra-done-up sort of girl in push up bras and booty baring shorts that rack up the most attention in the fitness space. I’ve been turned down for on camera jobs for those reasons, and have been sent feedback from potential brand partners or casting directors that I’m too modest, my photos or videos need to be edited or manipulated to be more marketable. I’ve been told I’m not lean enough, even that I talk too slow. It’s unbelievable that (Continued on page 21)

KH: Trend is such a funny term, so I’ll say that anything promoting anything other than putting in consistent work, staying in action and taking total ownership over the outcomes, is just that – a trend, or something with enough hype to have people’s attention, but not something that will teach someone how to obtain and sustain long term results. Stay away from that stuff. I’m all for anything that promotes working hard enough to reap some kind of benefit through an elevated heart rate and a body in motion. I don’t know if I should categorize it as a trend, but home workouts have really powered through to the masses over the last 5-years, and what I love about that is more people can experience a stronger, healthier and more conditioned mind and body without the variables of gym memberships, commutes, time constraints and daunting crowds. FM: Your five favorite workout moves or exercises? KH: Pushups, Lunges, Shoulder Press, Starfish Crunches (you’ll have to workout with my ab/core videos to find out what that is), and Burpees (google ‘burpee’ – I think I’m still somewhere towards the top with a tutorial video)! “ OLIVIA COUTURE, ASHLYN PIKE & JENNIFER VARGAS

FM: You hear different things about how frequently someone should work out or how long they should get their heart rate up on a daily basis. What is the bottom line for these numbers? KH: There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer since we all respond differ-

We were designed to move, fashioned – really, to be active, so that could be anything from gardening, brisk walks, hiking, cleaning the house with a few bodyweight squats thrown in, riding a bike, horseback riding...and incorporating more steps throughout the week, taking the stairs … I’m sure I could keep going, but you get the gist!“

BLAIR WALDORF’S WORLD OF FASHION

BY BRITTANY TREGLIA

Most Saturdays the local Salvation Army will have a 50% discount on all clothing items. I immediately hit the coat rack and what did I find? A fun, long, Houndstooth coat almost identical to the one Blair would wear strolling the Upper East Side streets of New York. Needless to say, I left that day with a $70 coat for the price of $6. 2. Another favorite outfit of Blair’s was the classic dress with pleats. Most of the dresses would accentuate her waist, then flaring out to her give a feminine look. Blair wore a lot of pastels and flowers. Here is I tend to lean more towards blacks and stripes. Another successful trip to the Goodwill brought me to a simple black and grey dress that was similar to the style Blair wore on multiple escapades chasing Chuck Bass around the city or scheming a plan to take over her school. I was able to snag up this pretty little item for just $10.

I can remember as a kid, sitting and watching multiple movies or different TV shows, longing so desperately to have the same wardrobe as the main character. I wanted to have those cool butterfly clips that Lizzie McGuire had, or even the trendy scarves Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen used to wear. Wal-Mart came out with a Mary-Kate and Ashley line once; And my pre-teen self squealed with excitement when I finally possessed my very one denim purse! Goodness gracious, I’m so glad the 90’s are no longer here.

3. Blair didn’t really ever wear shorts or jeans, and so the last item I found that I absolutely fell in love with, was a simple red dress with a sheer overlay. Blair wore a pale mint dress to a function in one of the episodes. When seeing this dress, I remember thinking, “That could be dressed up or dressed down.” The dress I found (for $5) has the same feel. I wore it to work once with flats and then wore it with heels another time when I had to host an event.

Today, it’s even more possible to obtain the desired wardrobe from the beloved main TV characters, because thrifting…is a thing! Though I’m not stating the show as a personal fave, a character whose fashion I have tended to gravitate towards, is a character named, Blair Waldorf, a scheming, spoiled high-society character. Of the three main female characters, I would say my fashion follows the style of teenage fashioinista, Blair, rather than Serena van der Woodsen (definitely not Vanessa, whose fashion I might liken to the WalMart aisle of the Mary-Kate and Ashley line…girl, dress up!). Anyhow, I’d see pics of Blair’s character, then piecing my own Waldorf-wardrobe, I began adding my own flair and style to it. Come to find out, Blair’s wardrobe was heavily gleaned from a famous, iconic character that many of us have known and loved—Audrey Hepburn. So, I guess in my research of Blair, I found that she too, tried to mimic the beloved and famous character from the screen (or at least the show’s stylist did). So, with the image of a sophisticated Blair Waldorf in mind, I decided to ransack the nearest thrift stores to see what exactly I could find. Here is what my extensive “research” produced”. 1. One of my favorite Saturday morning activities is to go thrifting. I live about 45 minutes from San Diego, and let me tell you thrift stores near the beach are amazing. Quite a few times, I have found EXACTLY what I have been looking for, but at a less expensive price. Once, I was on the quest for a winter coat, I went to the local thrift shop.

Brittany showing off her “Blair Waldorfesque” thrift store dress. Way to go, Britt! #OOTD

Another thing Ms. Waldorf possessed, along with her fashion sense, was some hidden humor in her character. With the snarky sarcastic comments, a favorite of mine in particular would be, “Whoever said money didn’t buy you happiness, didn’t know where to shop.” Although Blair’s idea of shopping is Fifth Avenue in New York, mine is wandering the streets near the beach in and out of Goodwill, Salvation Army or other thrift stores. Truth be told, I really don’t see that much of a difference in our shopping habits, although my sense of fashion doesn’t come close to her style and sophistication; I can

New Season...New space!BY JENNIFER VARGAS PHOTO CREDIT: BRITTANY TREGLIA

BY

CHRIS GENIN

A new season has begun—the season of new hope and fresh beginnings. This is a wonderful time of the year where our spaces can also, in a sense, step into a new season to reflect the atmosphere of new life taking place all around us. Our homes are our havens, sanctuaries, and our places of rest and refuge, so why not spruce them up and step up our game indoors, as much as spiritually, and in our daily activities?!?

The quickest and most cost effective way is to search out for throw pillows to place on sofas, beds, chairs and benches throughout your home. Above are several different examples of fun trendy pillows to help spruce up your space and place this spring! These selections will either inspire you or cause you to go out and grab these exact combinations. Either way, may you have a blast stepping into your space this new season!

When I think of Spring, I think of fun, sparkling lemonade, hammocks, blooming flowers—of every kind (which means colors everywhere…reds, hot pinks, light pinks and all the pinks in between, yellows, purples and orange; In many cases, those colors are even mixed together on one single petal. The beauty and fun of Spring is that the colors don’t just end there… have you seen the vibrant blues, light blues, turquoise colors of swimming pools, oceans, and rivers? This translates to one thing ... time to step your living space into something new!

Interior Designer, Jennifer Vargas, has been in the industry for over six years and has decorated many spaces ranging from gorgeous homes, to sets on TV studios, businesses, fancy dorm rooms and more! Her company, Alteza Designs, is a company with a passion to help you unravel “your” story in the form of your own personal space. Whether it be your bedroom, dorm, office, or entire home. With a heart to reach out to orphans, Alteza’s mission is to transofrm, affect, heal and impact people’s lives and spaces with their creations. For more information or questions about Alteza, email: jennifer@ altezadesigns.com and don’t forget to follow them on instgram at: @Alteza_designs

New, usually means spending money, and sometimes a lot of it. So, how do we step into our new look without redoing our entire space or room?

(Continued from “Blair Waldorf’s World of Fashion,” page 19) 1. Be intentional. Make sure you know exactly what you are looking for. Sometimes you can get lost in the excitement of good prices and leave the store with a bag full of items you may not like as much once the thrill has worn down. 2. Don’t buy something you “might wear”. If you have to think twice about it, don’t get it. You might be dressing like your favorite character or a TV icon, but you may not have the same wallet as they do. 3. Have some fun with the items you buy. One of my favorite purchases from a thrift store was a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt high-waisted jeans. I didn’t like how they fit my leg, so I took a pair of scissors and made them into shorts. I think I bought them at least 3 years ago, and I still have them! Looking good doesn’t always have to come at a high price. My advice to you? Look good, spend less, and never—I repeat, never—buy undergarments at a thrift store. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

Pictured Above: Brittany and her brother, “Tregg”, wearing her fun “new” outfit. Talk about adorable! Photo across: Brittany sporting her very stylish houndstooth (or is it plaid) coat--either way, YES, please!

confidentently say, however, in the fact that out here in SoCal, I still dress a step above the game where fashion is concerned. Thrifting has become one of my favorite things to do. I love browsing through racks and racks of clothes, in search for my latest favorite piece. Now don’t get me wrong, I sure do love the smell of a department store, and nothing quite compares to the smell or feel of brand new pants, but there is something about thrifting that makes me feel satisfied when I leave the store with a treasure found. If you are planning your latest thrifting outing, I would suggest three things:

(Continued from “All in Stride”, page 7) those are even ‘issues’, and I’d be a liar if I said there haven’t been moments I almost convince myself to veer into those categories until I realize there’s nothing of any real value to be gained (by other people, or me) from doing so. It is insanity how much deceit and self-idolatry plagues society, and I want to be accountable to not contribute to it. FM: You generate a very positive image that goes beyond just being skin deep. Anything you’d like to say to those who make that their sole focus? KH: Just going back to what we just talked about in overcoming pressures—you really have to get real with yourself and ask if what you’re doing, what you’re focused on and what you prioritize, actually adds

real value to the world. If we keep it simple, we’ll be less likely to scoot around and start making justifications for behaviors that just mimic the most meaningless parts of society. FM: Who are some of your health and fitness role models and why? KH: Since the era of Mariah Carey, Shania Twain and Britney Spears, I haven’t had any mainstream sort of role models in any industry. I admire a lot of great people, but as far as a health and fitness role model, I’m just inspired by humble people who are committed to taking care of themselves for no reason other than being better at whatever it is they do. My heart really lights up when I see older folks being active or making good food choices, or someone with significant weight to lose, taking action to become healthier- I love that so much. Those are the people who really inspire me. (Continued on page 23)

The Brows Have It! by

Jennifer Segovia Whether you want to tweeze, wax, or thread keep in mind that fuller, longer, natural eyebrows are the trend. Never sacrifice your eyebrows’ natural shape by over-tweezing or thinning. You can enhance the appearance of the eye, keeping in mind that eyebrows are defined by the arch, length and thickness. Try these methods to help create the perfect brow. STEP ONE: Start with a base. Use a concealer or cream base, then applying a matte eyebrow powder or powder eye shadow on top of that. You can always go over with a shimmer for a stronger highlight on the brow bone. STEP TWO: Choose either a thin liner brush or eyebrow pencil for shaping and shading. The brush works well to give a softer look to brows with little hair or if you are just filling in a sparse area. A pencil can do the same and even create a more distinct, dramatic look.

22

www.Fashionedmagazine.com

STEP THREE: Choose a color. Ideally stick with your natural hair color, but if your hair is naturally dark you may want may want to go a shade lighter. If your hair is blonde, go one - two shades darker, depending how light they are. STEP FOUR: Start at the bottom, inner corner of your eyebrow which should align with your nostril. Follow along the arch of the brow. Follow through past where your eyebrow ends, but not going into the temple area. STEP FIVE: Take your eyebrow brush and brush the brows to blend through for a more natural look, blending in the line though the hairs of your eyebrows. CHANGE OF HEART

’ve been walking about life somewhat despondent, without direction. I’ve tried just about everything to fill the emptiness I wake up to every morning. By everything, you know what I mean; But if I’m completely honest with myself, I realize that I still feel empty. How is that possible? may have casually referenced You before, but this time, I am serious. I’ve heard about a God who is real, kind, loving, forgiving and Who can pull me out of even the darkest of places. If you are real, then I take a step towards You & give my life to You.

(Continued from Page 21, All in Stride) FM: What causes you to wake up every morning? KH: This might come off a little cheesy-cheese, which I usually am, but God’s grace. The fact I get another chance to make the most out of another day, no matter how awesome or terrible I’d been the day before, always fires me up enough to get out of bed and get moving. FM: Nothing cheesy about that! What are you most passionate about? KH: God, my marriage, my role in other people’s lives and the welfare of those hurting or forgotten. FM: Can totally relate. A time in your life when you remember being incredibly discouraged – how did you get over that? KH: Well, there have been many, and although there have been times Purchased at Nordstrom Rack: Urban Decay E/S Primer, Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner, “Lush”; L’Oreal E/S, $1. Plum n/p, Walmart.

(All in Stride, Continued from page 23) KH: Time and consistency. If you’re doing things right, fueling your body with enough good food and nutrition, staying active, sleeping six to eight hours each night and saying “no” to more of the things that don’t move you toward your goals, the results you’re after will come, unless you give up or always ‘start over’. Don’t self-sabotage the progress you make. Celebrate the seemingly small successes, over and over, because they compound to create the big ones.

KH: Everything. Seriously, fear can be one of those monsters that sneaks up on me at the most ridiculous times, but, choosing fear is like telling your victories you don’t really want them, and I want them. FM: Best day of your life? KH: I think this is a toss-up between getting baptized in youth group and our wedding. FM: Favorite songs on workout playlist?

FM: Yes! What great insight and advice! What is the key in remaining focused on goal-setting and getting results? KH: Remembering (and realizing) you are the variable in your level of success. I hear people complain about their situations- all the time. Rarely do I see people doing what it takes to change them, or at least not for the long haul. It’s easy to get impatient, or create unrealistic deadlines, so being transparent enough with ourselves to recognize we are human, life happens, and things take time help to avoid self-sabotage. FM: That’s so good and makes it do-able because it’s practical. What keeps you grounded?

KH: All things TobyMac. FM: Where do you think your fashion sense comes from and your top three fashion must-have’s? KH: I always get a good laugh when someone says they like my ‘style’, because for as long as I remember, my fashion sense has been non-existent. Maybe that’s why some people appreciate it, or maybe they’re just being nice. Comfort and function are really the only things I’m interested in, so throwing things together like mis-matched patterns, awkward socks and bold shoes totally works for me. (As for musthave’s) Loose fitting tops, comfortable leggings, and headbands.

KH: Knowing I’m here for purposes bigger than just myself. Being adopted from South Korea, and having been planted in my hometown of Kennewick, Washington into a family who loves me unconditionally and getting to pursue and do what I love here in Orange County, California is serious accountability to do more of what matters most. There have been plenty of pit stops and lessons learned, but praise the Lord for mercy and grace.

FM: There are some really cute work out lines, which are your favorites to wear?

FM: What is it you love most about what you do?

FM: Final words of wisdom?

KH: Being able to help develop or strengthen a person’s confidence and ability to just feel and function better. And if I can encourage someone to just keep moving forward and become the person they’re designed to be, I’m grateful and encouraged to keep doing what I do.

KH: Do more of what matters most, and less of the things that don’t. Time is life, so spend it well.

KH: My current favorites all come from Iron Lily, since it each piece is so performance based – there’s just something about really high quality clothing you can move and sweat in. You can also use my code, “KELSEY20” for twenty percent off.

FM: Sushi or tacos? KH: Why not both? I could live off either. FM: Frozen yogurt or ice cream? KH: Frozen yogurt, because I’m all about that soft serve with fun toppings like cookie dough balls or strawberry mochi. FM: TOP beauty essentials you can’t go a day without? KH: Facial moisturizer and mascara, for sure. I’ve been loving Tarte mascara and bb cream for a few years now; I’m a sensitive skin sort of gal, so I’m particular on what goes on this face. I’m also all about that coconut oil life for adding a little sleek and shine to hair. FM: Is there anything you have been afraid of but went after it anyways?
