Where did the time go? I’m still reeling from the heat of last month and now we’re already in October, only it’s not much cooler. Time not only flies when you’re having fun, it also flies when you’re swamped and up to your ears in work! Although I’d like to say running Fashioned is my full-time job, it’s not ... yet! So until things shift and change in that general direction of the publishing breeze, our team keeps plugging away at our day-jobs, and moonlighting talks of fashion, photo shoots, features, upcoming issues and more…it’s a blessed life!
HELLO FROM CYNDI!
With October, there was so much to take into consideration for our issue. And while we at Fashioned, love fashion and all that comes with it, we thought it only fitting to beef up theme girl-hood, power of courage and being brave. This issue of combating fear is echoed by one of my all-time faves, the cowardly lion who boldly proclaimed, “I haven’t any courage at all. I even scare myself.” While many of us continue to brave our journeys with a sometimes slight jump at the sight of our tails that shadow behind, I was reminded of a scripture in Joshua and felt it high time to put all of this month’s eggs in THAT basket. “Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.” (Joshua 1:9, The Message) So clearly spoken, and yet so seldom remembered. You are not alone. He is with you...at ALL times. Doesn’t matter where you are, or whether you think He is or isn’t, Hs IS. Let that sink in again...and again. It’s time to push those thoughts of fear out and give that scripture a try!

We especially thought it fitting and relevant to share the word of courage with our sisters fighthing not only Breast Cancer, but other Cancer forms and illnesses. Not only did we find it relevant to the Breast-Cancer Awareness Month campaign, but we wanted you to know we think you are brave. It’s at the core of who you are. Even if you feel afraid, you ARE brave and we are behind you! After all, we are girls, aren’t we? Created with precision and intentionality, we’ve been designed, or fashioned (I should say) with courage, strength and bravery. Now that’s not to say that we are parading the female-anthem, “I Am Woman,” (although a few of us on the team actually are old enough to know the tunes and coos of the lovely Helen Reddy).
With this month’s emphasis of Breast Cancer awareness, comes a very tender and nostalgic moment for me as I dedicate this month’s issue to best friend, Elizabeth Vaughn, who although championed Breast Cancer for only couple of years, lost her battle to Cancer in December 2012. If there was anyone who had courage to fight, it was Elizabeth, along so many others who have fought it and WON! Kim Foster, Heddy David, and others, we celebrate you and your story of triumph!

For those of you still fighting, we believe in a miracle-working God, and not only believe with you, but IN you! Put on your fight song, fill your mouth with FAITH, get your team of peeps around you and DON’T BACK DOWN! For those of you wondering if prayer works...it DOES. It’s more than “hoping”....it’s believing and standing in the face of adversity to say, I AM STRONG, I CAN and I WILL LIVE! I don’t know your pain or struggle, but from one sister to the next, I am standing with you. Girls, it’s time to be FOR each-other and not AGAINST. Here is to courage, bravery, grit and fighting like a girl. It’s already there inside of you. For some, it may seem dormant, but it is there. For others, you see it often. While the struggle IS real, adversity and difficulties have caused me me to look at fear in the face, and not back down. Defined as “…the ability to do something that frightens one”, “…strength in the face of pain or grief” and “…mental or moral strength to, venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty…”, (Merriam Webster), this issue is on behalf of every girl and every woman. For every girl and every woman is…courageous. No matter the situation, you can get through it. It may be tough. It may be painful and you may feel like you’re not going to make it. I have news for you…you can and you will, for you are courageous. C’mon, girls! Take a good look at who you are, a fierce lion. No more doubting. No more fear. You are strong, bold and brave. I have many “crazy idea” pages in my journals. Pages of ideas like being in a band that only plays at the beach, to putting on a conference for thousands of teenagers...I would love to see more of my crazy ideas become reality throughout my lifetime.

So when Fashioned Magazine (FM) got word that this month’s “It” girl was going to be OC’s feisty and fabulous red head, we were ECSTATIC!! Ashlyn Pike, only 18, is the epitome of fashion, style, grit and grace...just the way every girl should be...in her own way, of course! When Ashlyn texted me and asked if we could go to LA to shoot her senior photos my answer was a resounding, “YES!” I was absolutely excited to be a part of her graduation in some round about way or another. We headed towards the beautiful City of Angels around 4:30 pm and of course as soon as we got to LACMA, we drove around for a good 30 minutes looking for parking--good ole’ LA. We had decided on taking her photos at the famous LACMA lights, a place where every
Los Angelean should visit at least once. I love being there. With so many people--people from out of town, photographers with models, locals strolling hand-in-hand--it’s simply exciting. With a beautiful city at that time of the day, we were able to capture some pretty amazing moments of Ashlyn—even a couple with a pretty amazing sunset. Once at LACMA we spotted a few fun areas with great backgrounds and thus, the shoot began. Ashlyn is super photogenic and was a blast to work with! She has that flawless smirk that that made me feel like I couldn’t get enough photos. One of my favorite highlights of the shoot were the incredible shots in the setting sun, as well as when the lights immediately turned on. A few outfit changes and voila! We captured some pretty outstanding shots. With her great sense of style, Ashlyn almost reminded me of Audrey Hep-

A little Q&A with Ashlyn,,,
FM: This month’s issue is on courage and being brave. When was a time you had to build up the courage to stand by a decision, no matter the cost? AP: Making the decision not to go to college right after graduating high school. FM: What is the most embar rassing thing that has ever happened to you?
AP: Yes, of course! It’s so natural to feel pressure to have it all together. Once I realized my calling wasn’t going to “expire,” the pressure subsided and my head was clear enough to start exploring my passions and

AP: My life is a series of small embarrassing events. I do everything from dropping my keys on people’s feet during conversations, to forgetting how old I am when people ask. FM: Who are you? What makes you, you? AP: I am a brave, purposed (young woman with a)…purpose for being alive, given to me by the One who fashioned me according to what that purpose is. What makes me, me, is exactly what makes everyone else uniquely them. Diversity among talents,
interests. FM: If you were able to go back and give the freshman version of yourself advice, what would it be? AP: I would advise myself to take people’s advice for what it is, but really listen and learn from those you trust and look up to. FM: I think a lot of girls your age— heck, my age too--face a lot of self-issues, like how we look, how to dress, etc.. How do you try and stay away from that? Or how do you handle those things? Have you ever put on a pair of shoes that made you feel a little taller, a little sassier, full of confidence and perhaps a little brave? Well if you look at my closet, you might find more than a few of those 4 to 5 inch high heel shoes that I love to wear. But as you and I know, being brave and courageous and walking this precious journey we call “life” takes more than a pair of some fun shoes! This type of being… brave & courageous –no matter what we face, comes from within. The Bible says we were created in the image and likeness of God. That means we have His characteristics, His strengths, His heart and His abilities on our side. So what’s holding us back? Probably a lot of things, but fear ranks the highest. I know for me, that was my obstacle. I was insecure, afraid of failing and letting others down. For you, it may be fear of being ridiculed, coming up short, being hurt or rejected; and for others, afraid of what everyone will say or think of them. We measure or compare ourselves to others and think in order to be brave we need to “be like that person over there”. But what brought freedom and liberty to me was when God began to show me that I was a child of God. He formed me and equipped me different than others. I realized, “My brave may look different than yours”. But what’s beautiful, is that when we choose to step out and take risks, we are changed, we recognize

we are capable—and therefore change those around, as well. If we would just take the step, move forward and understand that the people who have taken steps ahead of us, or the people who are pursuing their dreams, probably faced the same amount of fears. When one woman does it, she opens the door for others to follow. I’m so glad I made the choice many years ago to let go of my fears and believe that as a child of God, I was designed and fashioned to be brave. So let’s do it. Let’s be brave. Let’s stick our toes in the water and watch God part the waters to clear the way for us. One of my favorite scriptures says, “We are God’s workmanship or masterpiece, created in Him to do good works, which He prepared in advance…”(Ephesians 2:10). My brave will look different from yours, but we have all been called to do good & great works prepared by God. And if God prepared them, it means I am covered, nothing will be missing and I am equipped. So let’s begin today, be brave in your own way and open the door for others to follow. And of course, you might as well make it fun, so pull out those brave shoes while you’re at it. AP: I generally shop at Nordstrom Rack, Kohl’s, Cotton On and Charlotte Reusse. I shop at these stores because they sell cothes that I love wearing without breaing the bank! I look for stores that are trendy, but still express my unique style.
FM: Pick anywhere in the world to live…Where and why? FM: What is your ultimate dream? AP: I LOVE living exactly where I do. It’s close to the beach, the mountains, the excitement of L.A., Disneyland and the coffee shops of downtown that make an adventure always a possibility. Southern California is home to me for too many reasons.

Speaking of Playlists... Music…there’s something so moving and stirring about it, that it can actually change the way we feel. We’ve been created to respond to music. It’s why a toddler who has never been taught to dance, begins bending at the knees in at the first sign of rhythm and song. When Pharrell’s Happy comes on, feet get to tappin’ and heads begin to bop, no matter how gloomy one may have felt prior. Music can also strengthen us, giving us the courage we need. I once ridded my heart of all relational residue smack dab in the middle of singing Diana Ross & the Supremes’, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” at the top of my lungs driving down the 210 freeway to Pasadena. What about the empowerment that comes from singing, “I Will Survive”? Music and melody can definitely help bring hope and healing to an otherwise dismal circumstance. “I HAD TO DRESS THE COW” ILLUSTRATED AND WRITTEN BY SUSANA SZARKO In light of both, costuming and pink, we thought this story to be more than fitting…it’s just plain ole fun! As a former high school teacher I had heard a good share of very creative and interesting excuses, however, I had never heard an excuse like this one: “I had to dress the cow.” Not only was that the most ridiculous excuse to ever enter my ears, but what was even more ridiculous is the fact that I totally believed it. But before you label me as “the most gullible person of the year,” let me offer you a very reasonable explanation. I was having lunch with my husband and daughter at our local Chick-Fil-A fast food restaurant and ordered coffee as my choice of drink which was promised it would be brought to my table with my

order. After fifteen long minutes, as I was finishing my sandwich and with still no sign of my hot, steamy, freshly brewed cup of java-beans-juice in sight, I was about to stand up and walk to the counter, when the young lady who took my order appeared with my cup of coffee. As she handed me the cup she quickly apologized as she told me “Sorry it took so long for your coffee, I had to dress the cow.” Her words sounded so strange to my hears, even my husband chuckled a little, but lo and behold, as we all turned and looked to the front of the restaurant, the Chick-Fil-A mascot was greeting the customers as they walked in. To be honest the entire lunch experience was strange. Everywhere you looked people were dressed in cow costumes,

a sea of white and black not only inside the restaurant but also outside, and more cow imitations inside the cars in the drive-thru. Now what you don’t know, is that my husband was wearing a cow-print tie, my daughter was dressed as a cow, and I too, was dressed as a cow—ears, tail and all! Just before you think I live in a crazy town, let me first explain that it was it was Chick-Fil-A’s Cow Appreciation Day and if you dressed as the mentioned beloved mammal, you got to enjoy a free meal. You may wonder what would compel an adult sophisticated woman (at least I think I am sophisticated, but just in case, do not ask my friends) to abandon all reservations and dressed like such an unflattering animal? It was not just the free meal, although a very good
and tempting deal; the answer is my four-year-old daughter. The previous year, when my husband asked me if I was going to participate in such a silly event, of course I gave him a dignified negative response - I did work on putting their costumes together, I am not that heartless. When they came back home from their bovine diner experience and saw the smile on my daughter’s face, I realized I had missed not just a free dinner but much more, so much more. That night I made up my mind that I will fully participate in the small and simple events that life may bring to my path, no matter how silly they might be. That is how you came to find me sitting in the fast food restaurant fully dressed as a cow. And when I say “fully,” I mean fully. Let me tell you,

Some people, obeying the very gravitational law of cautiousness, just wore a white t-shirt with black spots, but others, really put a real effort to imitate the beloved cow. One of my favorite moments was when out of a big construction truck, three brawny men came out with full cow costumes made of white painter’s coveralls! As I sat there in the restaurant amongst the chaotic and humorous scene – by now lunch hour was at its busiest, overflowing with cows - I started to think about life’s experiences and how much more we could bring to it, or not. This is where the lesson of the story comes to fruition - I told you I was a teacher make your life experiences memorable! Just to think I could have stayed at home, as on the previous year, and missed the look on my daughter’s face as we walked into the restaurant. It doesn’t take a lot of money to make an event or life experience extra special, just a little of bit of extra work and a pinch of planning mixed with imagination. Is there a 4th of July Parade in your town? Pack the most patriotic blanket you have and splurge a little bit of extra money on a couple of glass-bottled-colas to share with your friends If you want to have even more fun, dress in red, white and blue. You will get so many compliments from other people to make it all worthwhile as you also brighten their day and add a little bit of magic by your choice of outfit. Is there a fall festival in you community? Go to it! Go and take a thermo filled with hot cider and maybe a couple of pumpkin spice muffins. Buy yourself a fall color scarf and dress for the occasion. Do not pass by the decorate-your-own-pumpkin stand, even if you are the only adult in it! Use extra glitter if available. And don’t dare take that pumpkin to your house, surprise one of your neighbors or friends with it; they will remember you as they see it in their porch or front entrance. Is there a special movie coming out in the theater you have been waiting to see? Dress like your favorite character even if it is just a simple accessory that would remand you of that movie. Bring some movie-themed treats for your friends who are accompanying you or even better, have a simple dinner party after the event. If you have children or plan to watch a kid’s movie like the classic Disney movie Lady and the Tramp, have some spaghetti and breadsticks for dinner as you listen to Italian music. The possibilities are endless, the rewards imaginable! Just so you know, I am starting a cow outfit collection. This year I am going to look for a cow-print purse to add to my costume, after all, even a cow could look sophisticated with the right accessories. Now, what I am about to tell you is something I never thought would come out of my lips: next year I plan to be the best-looking-cow! As I see it, there are three types of people: those who stay home on cow appreciation day, those who dress up just enough to get a free entrée, and those who go crazy and dress from head to toe like a cow and get the entire meal for free, and also have the most fun!
Now back to the restaurant full of hopeful black-and-white-spotted customers. We were about to leave the restaurant, when a Chick-Fil-A employee came to our table with a big cup of icecream, more free food. With a big smile she complimented us on our very pretty and creative cow costumes and told us we were a “beautiful looking family.” The compliments did not stop there. As we were walking out, my daughter was smiling so proudly as people looked with adoring eyes and commented on how pretty she looked. Definitely worth the time that took making the outfits, and definitely I am so glad I did not stay home, otherwise how could I have heard the strangest, silliest excuse “I had to dress the cow!” Earlier that day, I had stepped onto my board as a cheerful girl, enjoying the breeze and attempting to resemble the shimmering beauties of the silver screen; Hours later, only to find myself washed up on the shore, sunburned, exhausted and a sweaty resemblance of a woman. As we loaded back into the car, I hoarsely said to my husband, “I hope you had happy birthday?” to which he paused and then graciously responded, “It was a surprise and an adventure, that’s for sure.”

FM: We, at Fashioned, believe that every young woman is fashioned and purposed for destiny and greatness. What are some of the things in life you hope to see happen in yours? BS: I hope to become a nurse one day. I want to travel to forgiven countries and help the sick. I want to go to Azusa Pacific University and play for their girls water polo team and swim for them.
BY CYNDI GALLEY PHOTOGRAPHER: BRITTANY TREGLIA When word got out that Buena Park’s High School Sweetie and water polo player, Bayley Saenz, was running for Miss Buena Park, Fashioned made it’s way to snap some pics to capture this SoCal,good-natured, freckled beauty who is as comfy in the water, as she is out.
FM: Anything inspirational you would like to say to girls who may not know they are called to do something great? BS: Girls, everyone was designed for a purpose, don’t let your friends, your boyfriend, or your family tell you who you are or your purpose. You have your own destiny and you decide where you feel most called. You are fearfully and wonderfully made and no one has the right to put you down. Arise and let your light so shine and show people the real you who is beautiful inside and out.
FM: You’re a swimmer – – have you always loved swimming? What is the first thing you can remember about ever swimming as a kid? BS: I have always loved to swim ever since I was younger, my parents could never get me out of the pool. The first thing I remember about swimming as a kid is when I first learned to swim without my floaties. I was so scared, I didn’t believe in myself but my parents told me that I could do it on my own. I remember swimming across that pool that day and feeling like the coolest person in the world. If I had to choose between the two I would choose water polo. Last year I was the JV team captain and I was subbing varsity. This year I will be a varsity starter and I am so excited for the season. FM: What is it that you love about this sport? BS: I love the aggressiveness of the sport and I love being in the water all the time. This sport is amazing because you push your body to breaking point but you don’t give up because you know you’re not broken yet. FM: So, you attend Buena Park High School and I hear that you ran for Miss BP. How did that come about? BS: I didn’t always want to run for Miss Buena Park, but when one of the parents on the booster club board talked to me about it, I really wanted to try to run. That parent has been on my side ever since the beginning and I am so grateful for them. I decided to go outside my comfort zone and try the pageant because I knew that if I tried hard enough I could win.
