It is official 2017 has arrived, we survived 2016 and now must brace ourselves for 2017. In my lifetime I have lived through a few years of uncertainty as I’m sure we all have. I have a feeling that 2017 could be one of those years especially for Alberta, but being an optimist I also hope it could also be epic. With the arrival of 2017, this year draws “The Newsy” closer to celebrating a decade in business, we are the luckiest people in the whole wide world to have been given such an extraordinary gift of loyalty from our readers and advertisers. It really does to go show that we all do care about our communities. We all are living proof that people still do care and support spending their hard-earned dollars in their own local communities. Our little magazine has changed the lives of many and will continue to do so in 2017. On January 21st, 2017 “The Best in Business Awards” proves my point, with hundreds of nominees of local businesses – these businesses would not be here but for the people of our communities supporting them!! Hooray – we should all be so proud, keep it up and 2017 will be another exceptional year for all of us. Enjoy this our 1st Issue of the year and the Newsy team wishes one and all the happiest and healthiest year of all time. May all your wishes come true. Aleesha, Kathryn, Denise, “Newsy” team.

Striving for

Readers Choice Best in Business Series

Excellence of heart. There will be soaring highs, but accompanying them will be depressing lows. To get through these low points, stay focussed on what you’re trying to achieve, and on why you started your business in the first place. Believe you will be successful, and ultimately, success will come to you.

Be Confident.

A

Achieving excellence in business isn’t easy, otherwise everyone would be doing it. It takes ded-

ication, motivation, and inspiration. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s a road fraught with setbacks and sacrifices. As difficult a journey as it is, though, any entrepreneur worth their salt wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re like us, you pour your heart and soul into your business. It’s a representation of who you are and what you stand for. You want it to shine brightly, because it means something to you – it’s a very real part of you, one in which you’ve invested countless hours, innumerable late nights, and far too many cups of coffee to count. If nothing less than excellence will do for your business, then you’re speaking our language, and we’ve got some great tips to help you find the success that you and your business are striving to achieve:

Don’t Allow Yourself to be Limited.

Limitations are an entrepreneur’s worst enemy; they’ll stop a business’ growth and success dead in its tracks. The interesting thing about limitations is that oftentimes, they’re self-inflicted. People find comfort in familiarity, and will sometimes settle so soundly into their routines that eventually, new challenges and opportunities that at one time might have been exciting now seem like impossible obstacles. The key to beating these limitations is to simply adjust your perspective. Recognize your limitations for what they are: self-imposed beliefs. Form new perspectives, and you’ll find that the heights you can take your business to are nearly infinite.

Focus on Your Goals.

Nobody who has run a successful business will ever tell you that they simply coasted their way to the top. Being a business owner is tough, and striving for business excellence isn’t for the faint

thenewsyneighbour.com

Success and excellence come to those who firmly believe they have earned it. Nobody knows your business better than you do – you’ve spent months and years building it up, and have dedicated yourself to seeing it succeed. You’re an expert in your field, so be confident in what you do – that positive swagger and belief in yourself will help you assertively make the decisions you need to in order to help your business grow and flourish. And if you’re having a hard time finding that confidence? There’s a lesson to learn there, too: dig deep and determine why it is that you lack belief in what you’re doing. Maybe you need to learn more about your field, better understand your craft, or spend more time focussed on certain aspects of your business. Do some soul-searching and figure out what’s standing between you and your confidence, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving business excellence.

Set High Expectations and Stick to Your Goals.

When a client sets a due date, we’ll bet that you do everything within your power to meet it. Why wouldn’t you treat your business to that same level of commitment? Set specific goals for yourself as an entrepreneur, and lay out a course for where you’d like to see your business go. Then, designate a deadline you’d like to see your objectives achieved by. Make your ambitions lofty, yet attainable. More importantly, give yourself a tight schedule to work within – the longer the deadline you set for yourself, the more reasons you’ll come up with to put off your success and postpone excellence. Start today! These pointers are great guidelines to go by, but are by no means by-the-numbers instructions on how to achieve business excellence. Ultimately, they’re missing one key component: you. Your business will see excellence because you believe in it. You bring fire and passion to what you do, and that enthusiasm is what will ultimately help your business rise above the others. Commit yourself to achieving excellence, and you’ll find yourself there in no time. ~ Kyle Penn

The Newsy Neighbour ' s 2nd Annual Readers Choice Best in Business IS BACK! The Best of Business Awards project is brought to you by The Newsy Neighbour Magazine, with sponsorship and support from the Town of Strathmore, the Strathmore Chamber of Commerce, the City of Chestermere, the Chestermere Chamber of Commerce and the Langdon Community Association! This is going to be HUGE! If you're not familiar with this event, check out what we did last year here - http://www.thenewsyneighbour.com/rcbiba We have spent 2016 analyzing feedback, reviewing last year’s results, and fine-tuning the entire process. This year, we are excited to bring you a magazine series and event that is GUARANTEED to not only bring the community together and support local businesses, but to blow last year’s event out of the water! From November 2016 Issue 109 to February 2017 Issue 112, we will be recognizing business excellence in our communities. There will be 3 winners in each active category: Gold, Silver & Bronze. Winners will be chosen by readers of The Newsy Neighbour Magazine, through an online voting system.

Vote for a Business

Starting December 1st, you will be able to vote for your favourite of the businesses that have been nominated. If you participated in our voting last year, you will notice that we’ve made some changes to the process since then. This year, you will have to enter an email address to vote. You will only be able to vote once from this email address – to ensure that the results are fair, and are not skewed by repeat votes – so be sure to make yours count! As well, we will only be holding one round of voting this year: it will start on December 1st, and finalize on January 8th. The winners will be announced at our awards ceremony on January 21st, and will be recognized in February’s Issue 112 of the Newsy Neighbour!

HOW DO YOU VOTE? www.thenewsyneighbour.com or www.facebook.com/ TheNewsyNeighbour Click on “VOTE NOW” Follow the instructions.

RULES

Last year we used a voting software that would only allow people to vote once per IP address, so if you took the survey once already, the next time you logged in it would recognize the IP address and not allow you to continue. However, there were some people that knew how to clear their IP address so they could vote multiple times. We were made aware of this each and every time it happened and spent hours erasing the multiple votes. It took a lot of time and effort on our part to make sure this contest was 100% fair and honest. This year, the voting software has changed. You will have to register your name and email address to be able to place a vote. You are not subscribing to anything (unless you choose too) and the names and email addresses will remain private. You will be able to see the votes, but not who placed them. You can vote for a business in every single category. Spend a couple minutes and go through all the nominees. A lot of businesses were nominated in multiple categories. You can vote in every single category if you wish, but it is not mandatory. Winners will be determined by YOU, the voters. The business with the most votes wins!

Spread the word, tell all your supporters to vote for YOU! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

removed with a toothbrush, and a scaler needs to be used to re-establish healthy teeth and gums. Once the tartar is removed, the teeth can then be properly evaluated for grade of periodontal disease, and extractions can be performed if necessary. A fluoride treatment at the end of the procedure helps to desensitize exposed dentin, strengthen tooth enamel, inhibit plaque formation and stimulate re-mineralization of the tooth enamel. So what should you look for in order to determine whether or not your pet is in need of a dental cleaning? An examination is key, as a veterinarian can open the pet’s mouth and note anything obviously abnormal. Annual dental cleanings are always recommended for thorough evaluation of the teeth, but some obvious signs of disease can include bad breath, if your pet is only chewing food on one side of the mouth (or not chewing at all), drooling, aggression, pawing at the face (a sign of pain), and facial swelling/abscesses. Brown build up on the teeth is another notable sign that periodontal disease may be present. Join us for Dental Month in February and receive 10% off your pet’s dental procedure! For more questions or information contact the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore at 403-901-1800. Spaces are booking up quickly, so call to avoid disappointment!

Socializing your Dog

“All the better to BITE you with, DOCTOR!” It’s that time of year again - when our Veterinarians try their best to examine their patient’s teeth, all while avoiding getting chomped in the process! Examination of animal’s mouths can be quite a daunting task, and often cannot be completed without sedation. In fact, a complete intraoral examination of the teeth and gums, including x-rays and dental probing around each tooth, is not possible unless the patient is under general anesthetic. A tooth may look okay at first glance, but probing routinely reveals pockets and other abnormalities exacerbating dental disease in cats and dogs. The process of probing below the gum line can be uncomfortable for the pet, and this is why they will often not sit still, and anesthesia has to be used. Dentistry in companion animals is very similar to humans. A scaler is used to clean the teeth and remove tartar build up. Subgingival cleaning is also performed to remove bacteria hiding under the gum line. Tartar is composed of bacteria and eventually it hardens over time. This accumulation of fossilized bacteria cannot be

As a dog groomer, I have had dogs come into my shop shivering and frightened on their first visit. As time goes on, I develop a relationship with these dogs and their fear subsides. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some dogs continue to act in this fearful way due to a lack of socialization. I use many techniques to try and calm an anxious dog and I have learned that a gentle hand goes a long way but there are things that owners can do at home to help this process. Owners often ask me what they can do to calm their nervous pet. No matter what age, size or breed your dog is, socialization can go a long way in terms of having a balanced pet at the groomers and at home. I understand that not everyone is capable of taking their dog to different places but the more you can incorporate your dog into your family’s activities, the healthier and more balanced your dog will be. In addition to taking your dog to new places, introduce them to as many new people and other dogs as possible. Book play dates with your friends and their dogs! Dog-friendly venues are limited; however, they do exist. Spruce Meadows is a world renowned equestrian centre that allows you to bring your dog and you can watch world class show jumping! One that many don’t know about is Canadian Tire. You may get some stares from other shoppers in the store but in my opinion, it is worth the value of a well socialized dog. More and more dog-friendly patios are starting to appear where you can enjoy The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

your lunch with the company of your four legged friend. The more places that you can take them, the better. Even if it is just for car rides, provided you do not leave them unattended in a hot vehicle or cold weather. A grooming shop or pet store is another great place to take your pup. I encourage many to drop in my grooming shop when they are out and about with their dog, just for the socialization aspect. Nail trims are a perfect time to get your dog out of the house and to your local grooming shop. When I was a student, I introduced my two dogs to as many new places as I could get away with. This included the hallways and elevators at the University that I attended, the video rental store and even the annual fair one year. All these experiences helped create well balanced dogs that I could take anywhere, including the 14th floor of the Foothills hospital when a family member suffered a stroke. My dogs were a hit among the patients in the common area of the stroke unit. Be creative… you never know what places are accepting of your dog unless you try. In addition to basic obedience, there are numerous fun activities that you can do with your dog. Not only are they great for socialization but the bond you create with your dog will last forever. Consider volunteering in a pet therapy program. Agility and flyball are great for the high energy breeds. Tracking is something to consider for the dogs that love to follow their nose. When dogs are brought up without being socialized, they can grow up to be unruly and fearful of new situations. I understand that you can be nervous yourself when entrusting your dog to a stranger like a groomer for the first time. When you drop your dog off at the groomers, the best thing you can do for your dog is to remain calm yourself, trust your groomer and pass off your dog with confidence. I encourage you to get to know your groomer prior to your first visit with your dog so that you can be relaxed yourself. Our dogs are aware of what we are feeling and if we are nervous, so are they! Many daycares exist that often will provide socialization classes in addition to the daycare. If your dog is a nervous nelly and it is difficult for you to take them with you on outings, consider these socialization classes or daycare once in awhile. It can make a tremendous difference! All of these methods of socialization will help your groomer safely groom your dog but most importantly, will create a happy balanced best friend for you to enjoy for many years! Stress: Your brain and body

The

Alternative Medicine/Health

What is stress and can it be good for you? Does it kill off your brain cells and can it cause depression? How does your brain perceive a terrifying situation and prepare your body for survival? What happens in your body? Putting energy into digesting your lunch, optimising your immune system or ensuring you are fertile all become rather unimportant in life-threatening situations. All these non-essential body functions cease and you divert all energy to your muscles and brain. Your heart beats faster, your blood pressure increases and you breathe faster pumping maximum oxygen and energy-rich blood to your muscles. Your liver releases more sugar into your blood ready for action. In evolutionary terms, this is a remarkable system that has helped our species survive.

What happens in your brain? Once your brain has decided there’s a danger, it sends immediate nerve signals down your spinal cord to your adrenal glands telling them to release the hormone adrenaline. Once released, adrenaline increases the amount of sugar in your blood, increases your heart rate and raises your blood pressure (and has many other actions). Your brain’s remarkable hypothalamus also sends signals to your pituitary gland at the bottom of your brain, telling it to release factors that within a few minutes have travelled through your blood stream and stimulated your adrenal cortex to produce a stress hormone – cortisol. Cortisol is very important in your stress response - keeping your blood sugar and blood pressure up to help you escape from danger.

Nail Salon

Long-term effects of stress Your body’s stress response is perfect in the short-term, but damaging if it goes on for weeks or years. Raised levels of cortisol for prolonged periods can damp down your immune system and decrease the number of brain cells so impairing your memory. It can also affect your blood pressure and the fats in your blood making it more likely you will have a heart attack or stroke.

Readers Choice Best in Business Awards Preview:

Matt Billon

The 2nd Annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards Night is taking place on January 21st, and there’s a lot to be excited about. Not only will this be THE business event of the year –

celebrating business excellence from Strathmore, Langdon, and Chestermere – but it will also feature the hilarious stylings of Canadian comic Matt Billon. I got the chance to talk with Billon leading up to the awards show, and couldn’t be more excited to see him perform at the Strathmore Civic Centre later this month. Growing up in Nelson, BC, Billon was bit by the comic bug early. The story is simple: one day, a comedy show came through town, and Billon was hooked. He stuck around after the show, bought the comedians drinks, talked to them about breaking into the scene, and knew that he had discovered something special. Following that evening, Billon made it a point to be at every monthly comedy show that visited Nelson, getting tips and guidance from each of the comics that came through, until he followed their advice to move to a bigger city and make a go of it. Heading out to Calgary late one autumn, it took Billon months to convince himself to get up in front of a crowd. Finally, that following January, he went to the Blackfoot Inn on amateur night and performed his set. “I knew then that I was hooked for life,” he told me.

From there, Billon’s comedy career soared to some pretty fantastic heights. He’s been on Much Music’s Video On Trial, performed at the revered Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, written for CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and had an hour-long special on the Comedy Network. He’s had the chance to work with comedic greats and childhood idols, including Rob Schneider, Tommy Chong, Doug Stanhope, Tom Green, and many more. Currently, Billon is focussed on his newest project, a pilot episode he wrote for and performed in called Kitchen Kids featuring Billon, fellow comedian Kevin Stobo, and Bob and Clint Moffatt (yes, that Bob and Clint, from the 90’s Canadian teen idol band The Moffatts). Airing on Shaw this February, Kitchen Kids is all about teaching children the basics of cooking and healthy eating, while keeping them entertained and having fun. While chatting with Billon about his career, I was struck by how much he’s accomplished. Sure, he’s been performing comedy for a fair while now (“When people ask me how long I’ve been doing

Do It Because You Love Doing It it, I tell them: long enough that I used to be able to smoke on stage!” he quipped), but regardless of how long he’s been at it, that’s a pretty jam-packed CV Billon’s created for himself. “I don’t know where I’d be without comedy,” he said in a moment of self-reflection, “or whether I’d even still be around.” He went on to tell me how his dad passed away just three months after Billon had started performing. “He was my biggest fan. I was going to quit comedy, but a good friend forced me back on stage, and it was the only time I was free from grieving…[comedy] is who I am. It’s my hobby, my love, my passion.” Powerful stuff, to be sure. Billon’s story also ties into several of the themes that we’ve discussed throughout this issue and will be honouring at the Business Awards. He found greatness in his career not because he set out to be successful, but because he embraced doing something he loved and pursued it as fervently as he knew how. Not only that, but he stayed true to himself and his values the whole time: “I’ve walked away from things that seemed like they might have been good for my career, but didn’t feel great to do” he mentioned. “You’re never done. There’s always more.” It’s this relentless pursuit of vision and passion coupled with an unwillingness to compromise on important values and goals that come together to create a textbook recipe for achieving excellence in business. We can’t wait to experience Matt Billon’s comedy and to honour deserving local businesses at our 2nd Annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards Night, happening on January 21st at the Strathmore Civic Centre. Healthy and Sane I was recently sitting and looking back over 2016. What a year for most of us! So much has changed and there is so much to be grateful for. It has been a challenging year for me and my family and I am sure you have had some difficult moments in your life, too! In March, we decided to sell our home; after many house showings, it sold at the end of August, final sale in September and then onto a new house purchase in a different part of town. Packing and unpacking had the usual challenges, plus moving my business from one house to another! We also helped my daughter move to Calgary, which meant more adjustments for us all. As a Massage Therapist and Spiritual Life Teacher/Guide, there were things I had to do to stay sane, healthy, relaxed, and grateful during that time. I want to share them in the hope they will help you too: 1. Get the right amount of sleep. Without it, I was “not always here," as they said. I had a hard time concentrating, remembering things (places and names) and I found myself sometimes even being angry and not really knowing why. 2. Take vitamins and minerals on a regular basis. Plus, I did a regular cleanse every 3 months. 3. Be organized and asking for help. As a busy mother, wife, home owner, and business woman, I found organization and learning to ask for help in my personal and professional life was essential in order to get things done. With a routine in place and an organized system for the packing, move, and all the details this life transition entailed, I was less worried and stressed. I also learnt how important a support team is. Look at what services you need and then put the right people in place. Ask family and friends for help and make sure you are there for them, too. 4. If you suffer from a chronic condition such as fibromyalgia and constant pain, practice self-care. I see an acupuncturist once a month, chiropractor as needed, have a physical once a year, dentist twice a year, massage therapist as needed, reflexology once or twice a month, and for me the most important, energy healing once or twice a month. 5. Spend time with family and friends on a regular basis. This was one of the most significant things I did this year. This was among the New Year’s promises I made at the beginning of 2016 and I certainly benefited from it! Spend some time with your family and friends, have some fun, try new things and enjoy making new memories; life is short!

I Am A...

Nominees The

CUCUMBER

Hair Salon

Well, hello there! My name is Chellahumari (which, as I’m sure you know, means “Precious Girl” in Hindi). I am a cheerful member of the cucumber family, one that includes such relatives as the watermelon and various kinds of squash. Although people usually think of us as vegetables, we’re actually a fruit—a creeping vine. We’re very happy to spread over the ground or climb up anything that’s handy. We have large leaves that form a protective canopy over our roughly cylindrical fruit. History We originated in India a very, very long time ago. People began to cultivate us at least 3,000 years ago, as we spread west into ancient Ur, Thrace (present day Turkey and Bulgaria, where we remain wildly popular), Greece, Rome, and later east to China. The ever-clever Romans were particularly fond of cucumbers. Pliny the Elder reported that the Emperor Tiberius had us on his table every day of the year. As Pliny put it, “indeed, he was never without it; for he had raised beds made in frames on wheels, by means for which his cucumbers were moved and exposed to the full heat of the sun; while, in winter, they were withdrawn, and placed under the protection of frames glazed with mirrorstone. Reportedly, we were also cultivated in cucumber houses glazed with oiled cloth known as specularia. In addition to enjoying us with their meals, the Romans used us to treat everything from scorpion bites to poor eyesight. Women desiring children wore us tied around their waists. We were also carried by midwives, then cast away, alas, when a child was born. Centuries later, the emperor Charlemagne grew cucumbers in his gardens in 9th century France. We were introduced to England in the 14th century, disappeared there, and then reappeared 250 years later. Columbus brought us to Haiti in 1494, and, mysteriously, the famous explorer Jacques Cartier, in 1535, found “very great cucumbers” growing on the site of what is now downtown Montreal. There are many varieties of cucumber grown and enjoyed around the world. The ones most familiar to North Americans include slicing, picking, and English. You almost certainly know all three of these. But have you ever tried a Lebanese or East Asian cuke? Or what about New Zealand’s Apple or India’s Dosakai cucumber, both yellow and round, the former enjoyed raw, skin and all, the latter a staple in Indian curries, daal, and chutneys? Health We are 90% water, and contain both ascorbic and caffeic acid – both help soothe skin irritations (such as sunburn) and can help reduce swelling (many people use us to reduce swelling under the eyes after “staying up too late”). bre, and contains a variety of beneficial minerals, including silica, potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and magnesium. We also contain vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, C, and folic acid. As befits a fruit that’s been around for thousands of years, people have come up with some novel ways to use us. For example, feeling a little lethargic in the afternoon? Forget the cup of coffee or can of Red Bull, and pick up a cucumber instead. Our combination of B vitamins and carbs can provide you an all-natural pick-me-up that can last for hours. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice on the mirror; it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. Looking for a fast and easy way to mask cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumber along your problem area for a few minutes – our phytochemicals will cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Some swear it works on wrinkles, too! Had a bit too much fun at the wedding last night? Worried about the inevitable hangover or pounding headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and increase your chances of waking up refreshed and headache-free. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off hunger -- we fill you up without filling you out. And finally, here’s my personal favourite (we do love to dress up). Have an important meeting or job interview, and you don’t have enough time to properly polish your shoes? Simply rub a freshly cut cucumber end over your leather pumps – its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great, but also repels water. But enough of all that. Try us yourself – there are a few nice recipes here to help you explore how best to enjoy us. Accha namaste, Chellahumari Cucumber

Do You Take Vitamins? 22 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

/JustSugarBodySugaring Phone: 403-901-8900

I

don’t know about you, but I find the question, “do I take vitamins?” very confusing, especially if you are a woman over the age of 50. Do we really need to take vitamins? Your doctor can order individual blood tests to test levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that include vitamins A, D, C, K, and B-complex vitamins B-12, B-6, B-1 and folates, minerals like magnesium, calcium, selenium, and zinc. This can help you take the guess work out of the question. Besides having the blood tests done, there are things you can watch for that might tell you if you are deficient in a certain vitamin.

5 Signs Your Body May Be Nutrient Deficient If you’ve noticed a mysterious health symptom that has no apparent cause, it’s worth considering whether a nutrient deficiency may be to blame. You may not get a disease, but you can end up with impaired functioning, because vitamins are co-factors for all the bio-chemical reactions in the body. We need them to function properly.

1. Cracks at the corners of your mouth.

This can be a sign of iron, zinc, and B-vitamin (niacin, riboflavin, and B12) deficiency, or that you’re not getting enough protein. Good dietary sources of these nutrients include organic free-range poultry and eggs, wild-caught Alaskan salmon, oysters, and clams (if you can be sure they are harvested from non-polluted waters), Swiss chard, and tahini. Because vitamin C enhances iron absorption, be sure your diet also includes plenty of vitamin C-rich veggies like broccoli, red bell peppers, kale, and caulflower.

2. Hair loss and a red, scaly rash (especially on your face).

This can be a sign of biotin (vitamin B7) deficiency. Your body needs biotin for metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids, but it’s most well-known for its role in strengthening your hair and nails. Egg yolks from organic, free-range eggs are one of the The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

best sources of biotin. Wild-caught Alaskan salmon, avocados, mushrooms, cauliflower, nuts, raspberries, and bananas also contain biotin.

3. Red or white acne-like bumps (on your cheeks, arms, thighs, and buttocks).

This can be a sign of deficiency in essential fatty acids like omega-3s, as well as vitamin A or vitamin D deficiency. Increase your intake of omega-3 fats by eating more sardines and anchovies (or wild-caught Alaskan salmon) or taking a krill oil supplement. You can find vitamin A in foods like leafy green vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, and red bell peppers, while vitamin D is best obtained through safe sun exposure.

4. Tingling, prickling, and numbness in your hands and feet.

This can also be a sign of B-vitamin deficiency (particularly folate, B6, and B12). The symptom is related to the deficiency’s effect on the peripheral nerves and may be combined with anxiety, depression, anemia, fatigue, and hormone imbalances. Some good sources of B vitamins include spinach, asparagus, beets, organic freerange eggs and poultry, and grass-fed beef.

5. Muscle cramps (in your toes, calves, backs of legs, and arches of feet).

Muscle cramps may be a sign of deficiencies in magnesium, calcium, and potassium, especially if it happens frequently. Fix this by eating more almonds, hazelnuts, squash, dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, and dandelion), broccoli, Bok choy, and apples. They say that an estimated 80 percent of people are deficient in magnesium. Your doctor can test you for this if you are having any of the above-mentioned symptoms. Magnesium is a crucially important mineral for optimal health, performing a wide array of biological functions, including but not limited to: Activating muscles and nerves, creating energy in your body by activating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), help digest proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, serving as a building block for RNA and DNA synthesis and acting as a precursor for neurotransmitters like serotonin. If you take calcium, you must be careful as it could be a problem when taken in high quantities and can cause more harm than good. It's very important to have a proper balance between these two minerals. If you have too much calcium and not enough magnesium, your muscles will tend to go into spasm, and this has consequences for your heart in particular and could lead to a heart attack. Again, you doctor can test for your calcium levels. I was suffering from leg and foot cramps in the middle of the night so I started to alternate between calcium and magnesium every night before I went to bed; my leg cramps stopped after just two nights!

As anything in life, always err on the side of precaution and treat supplements like you would any other medicine: take them with caution. If you are taking regular vitamin supplements, or thinking about it, ask your doctor before doing so. And by the way, 100 grams of spinach has healthy amounts of vitamins A, C, E, K, several B vitamins, and essential minerals including iron and calcium. The truth is, if you eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fortified food, you're probably getting all you need. But supplements do offer an easy, just-in-case form of health insurance. I guess what it really boils down to when it comes to the vitamin question, is if you feel you are deficient or do not feel right, make an appointment with your family doctor. The Mayo Clinic suggests if you suspect that you aren’t getting the nutrients you need, consider shifting your focus from supplements to eating better nutrient-rich whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains as they may provide many benefits over dietary supplements.

January is one of my favourite months and not just because it’s my birthday month (although that’s a pretty good reason!). January feels like there are so many new possibilities to be discovered in the months ahead, so many opportunities to explore life, to meet new people and to grow personally and professionally. January also represents a fresh start. It is when many of us reflect upon the past year and look forward to the new one (and perhaps fingers are crossed that it is better year than the last) or we set resolutions and goals for what we intend to achieve.

There was a time when January was just the month that I turned a year older. There were no resolutions or goals or any thought to what the year ahead might bring. That changed nine years ago when my oldest son graduated and it dawned on me how quickly the years had gone by. It felt like I had missed many of them in the distracting daily routines of parenting, working and contributing to my community. Perhaps you know this feeling? I made a decision to stop ‘existing’ and to see each year as a time to explore, discover and experience life… to become more of who I am.

of the Year’ can guide your decisions, actions and relationships (my word for 2017 is Spark). Deciding on one big goal for each area of your life, breaking the goals down into small doable steps and focusing on only one or two goals at a time, allows you to make steady progress and reduce the overwhelm (and stress) of making too many changes at once - keep in mind that changes you WANT to make are much more powerful and enjoyable than changes you think you SHOULD make. And finally, stretching yourself by going outside your comfort zone expands your perspective, knowledge and inner awareness – look for opportunities to do something new, overcome a fear or to feel vulnerable. I have discovered several results typically occur, both in myself and my clients, when we consciously make choices to be more present in our lives. Some of the bigger ones are: • the most impactful ‘growth spurts’ come after fears are faced or challenges overcome • the presence of just one supportive person in our life can expand our courage and bring new wisdom • confidence increases and we are better able to take on life’s challenges and see new possibilities • when we appreciate all of our experiences as part of our individual journey, we uncover a new level of awareness that can inspire others • when people allow themselves to be real and show their perfect imperfections, they are often lead down new and exciting paths Being real, vulnerable and perfectly imperfect is what Women Talk is about. Every month, women share stories about their life which have had a profound impact on how they understand themselves and the world. They share their passions, joys, hardships, hurts, life lessons and wisdom (and they share a lot of laughter, good food and friendship, too!). In this safe and supportive community, women connect to each other and in the process, step into their lives in a bigger way. As the New Year begins, how will you commit to stepping more fully into living YOUR life? Whatever you do, enjoy the ride. “We are all wonderful, beautiful wrecks. That's what connects us--that we're all broken, all beautifully imperfect.” ~ Emilio Estevez For more information about the monthly WOMEN TALK meeting in Strathmore, including how you may participate by attending or being a Talker, please visit www.WomenTalk.ca/Strathmore

Tips

Tip 1: Move and move well

We were built and designed to move, yet in today’s society, it is very easy for us to spend too much time sitting. Most of us probably sit for work, or spend long hours in a car, and when we get home we sit some more. The largest and most powerful muscle in our bodies is the gluteus maximus (the big muscle of the bum). It is the biggest muscle in the body, not to provide a cushion for us to sit on, but rather to enable us to generate incredible amounts of force. Unfortunately, sitting on this muscle all day every day actually just turns it off. When this happens, we get imbalanced, certain muscles get tight, other muscles get long and weak. It then becomes harder to move well. We are designed to bend, squat, lift a certain way. Moving well and moving correctly helps keep us balanced, strong and pain free!

Tip 2: Strengthen

Nearly every single person I see in my clinic comes to me because something is causing them pain. Without exception, every single client I see has some kind of muscle weakness - muscles that need strengthening to balance them out. When you are too strong in one muscle group and too weak in the opposing muscle group, this leads to increased stress on joints and their supporting tissues. I am yet to treat anyone for being too strong and balanced. An example of a common weakness I see is weakness in the muscles that control the shoulder blade. When these muscles are weak, there is less force controlling the shoulder blade, keeping it where it needs to be. Because the shoulder blade has a hook on it that extends above the arm bone, this weakness often leads to shoulder impingement, bursitis and rotator cuff tears.

Tip 3: Mobilize

Flamingos are able to fly at a speed of approximately 55 kilometres an hour. In one night they can travel about 600 km

When thinking about mobilizing, we are thinking about full range of motion in our joints. If we lose full range of motion in any joint, other joints have to start compensating. Remember what we said about moving well and correctly? It is hard to move well and correctly when you do not have full range of motion in your joints. For example, to perform a squat properly you need full range of motion in your hips, knees and ankles. If you don’t have full range of motion you will have to compromise some how – this usually means putting your lower

back or knees into a poor and compromised position. Some ways of mobilizing include: stretching, targeted foam rolling and weighted movements through full range. A licensed therapist is also able to effectively mobilize joints.

Control through full range is crucial! weight you are carrying round is just added stress on your joints and can definitely be contributing to your pain. I have worked with a number of people who have lost a significant amount of weight and every single time they have reported decreased pain as a result of decreased weight. There are obviously lots of factors involved in weight loss, but one of the most important things is creating a calorie deficit. This means expending more energy than you consume, so that your body has to access its fat stores to meet the deficit. Part of that is controlling what you eat, but the other part is consistent progressive cardiovascular exercise that gets you out of breath. Not sure how to move correctly? Not sure which of your muscles need strengthening? Not sure which joints need to be mobilized? Not sure how to develop control through range? Need a muscle balance assessment? A licensed physiotherapist can help you with all of these. Luckily, with some targeted movement retraining, strengthening and mobilizing to correct muscle imbalances, we can usually see a decrease in pain and symptoms fairly quickly. Samuel Down

Tip 5: Develop Balance

Balance was a central theme of the first 4 tips. Another thing I see time and time again in the clinic is people who are completely unbalanced. Let’s return to the example of sitting – if you spend hours and hours sitting day in and day out, the muscles at the front of the hip adapt and get used to that position, they become short, whilst at the back of the hip these muscles also adapt to this position and they lengthen out (and often become quite weak). This muscle imbalance can play havoc on how your hip joints move in their sockets, or where your pelvis’ resting position is, or how much control you have of your spine, pelvis and hips through their range. Ultimately, if you are imbalanced there is a good chance you are already experiencing pain, and if you are not then it is unfortunately really only a matter of time.

Meditation 101

Setting goals and resolutions are a common practice. These are often results-oriented. While I understand and use the value of these in my own life, I also have come to understand the value in NOT having a goal. Instead of a goal I wish to accomplish, I set an intention as to the person I wish to be at the end of my journey. And the heart is a pretty intelligent ruler when given the chance to help you choose that intention.

SANKALPA

San= an idea that is formed in the heart. Kalpa= “This is the rule I will follow above all other rules”. Phew! Another year over. Well... not really, as I am writing this in December... but I can seeeee the light. By the time you are reading this, 2017 will have commenced. Isn't it funny that we, meaning in general human nature, enjoy seeing the year to a close? Whether you mark a new beginning on January 1 or on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar or on a solstice – a new year feels like a new opportunity. Most everyone celebrates it in one way or another! The closing of a door. The opening of another. This metaphor is one that has many meanings. One reason I believe that we enjoy a new beginning is that it lets us close the door behind us.

This year, perhaps in addition or replacement of resolutions, I urge you to consider the greatest desires of your heart. This is an exercise similar to affirmations, but asks us to reflect upon our inner landscape to find out what our Soul is calling. Instead of WHAT you want in life, try exploring HOW you want your life to be. What kind of person do you wish to become? What energy do you wish to cultivate in your life, in the world? Use the present tense when you come to repeat it. Perhaps it is as simple as “I am able to accept people/situations just as they are”; or “I am full of vital energy and health”. Take some time to ponder this and watch what arises. Spend quiet time in nature, in meditation, or in reflection – if one can bring some quiet into the Self, understanding seems to arise from within. Your sankalpa will become clear. Hold this in your heart, write it down, remind yourself daily. Let it ride upon every breath, thought, word and action you take. Just a quick word of caution: Let your guidance be the part of you that resides in LOVE. If your sankalpa is rooted in fear, anger or ego it will cause you (or others) pain, and this is how you will know that an adjustment may need to be made. It won’t ring true. A sankalpa ALWAYS rings true – a resonance that stems from the very center of our being. New beginnings are a great place to release the past, look forward to the future, and to set the intention to live the best life we possibly can. We may not be able to choose the events in our life, but a sankalpa helps us to choose how we wish to live our lives and the kind of person we are as we do so. And it helps us to step forward into every day SURE in following the lead of our hearts. May 2017 be your best year yet, full of love, health and abundance! Namaste, Becky

What are the greatest desires of your heart?

Even the hardiest of souls resist change, so when we have two open doors, one in front of us and one behind, it is a very hard task to choose one to walk through. The New Year reminds us to look forward – to the future. We get to release the past year by gently, or not so gently, saying goodbye. We get to look forward to the next with fresh eyes, ready and hopeful. If we are not too cynical or frightened to look up, that is. Let me encourage you to choose to walk through the door to your future, because the past is nowhere to live. I will work on, and hope that you do too, on being PRESENT as much as I possibly can as I do my best to bravely step into my life. This year I feel inspired to return to listening to the desires of my heart. I

The Powerful Healing Nature of Essential Oils “This is a picture of what my son looked like before the treatment,” Monica said, pulling up a photo on her phone and showing it to me. “And this is what he looked like afterward,” she proudly stated, swiping to the next photo. The difference was truly staggering. Monica’s son suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss due to the body’s inability to recognize its own cells, leading to the self-destruction of tissue and hair follicles. As a result, Monica’s son’s head was nearly bare in the first picture she showed me, with only a few patches of wispy hair left untouched by the ailment. The second picture, however, is truly astonishing. In it, her son is grinning wide, sporting nearly a full head of thick, brown locks. Amazing.

heads to avoid the uncomfortable societal gaze that comes part and parcel with spot baldness. So how did Monica’s son – just 12 years old when he was diagnosed with alopecia, now 14 – combat these socially-debilitating symptoms? I asked her precisely this question, and she began to pull several items out of a small draw-string bag she had with her. First, she produced a plastic bottle of jojoba oil. Next, a small, glass vial of cedarwood essential oil. Then, essential oils of lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Finally, she brought out a plastic bottle with a rollerball on top of it and waved her hands over everything she had just placed in front of me. “All natural essential oils,” she told me. She went on to explain that the jojoba was a carrier oil, and the basis for the blend. By adding equal amounts of the other oils to the jojoba, she produced the mixture that was in the bottle with the rollerball top. “When we started out,” she told me, “we’d spray his scalp twice daily with this blend. Then, as the treatment started to work, we’d massage it in using the rollerball much less often – maybe 3 or 4 times a week.” The effect of this treatment was the transition from the first picture to the second – from a nearly-bald scalp to one full of hair.

It was this leap of faith – a belief in the healing.

When I asked Monica how she came upon this treatment and why she decided to try it out, her reasoning couldn’t have been more logical. They had to do something about it, she told me, because dealing with a condition like alopecia as a teenager is about as traumatic an experience as someone could go through, which is an assessment I certainly agree with. Being a teen is hard enough – even the smallest of differences is picked out and fixated upon by seemingly everyone. Having a pimple on the wrong day can seem like the end of the world, so I can’t even imagine what it would be like to go through those years struggling with something like alopecia. Monica nodded emphatically, adding: “The other alternative would have been corticosteroid injections to his head, which…I don’t know, I’m just not comfortable with. So we thought, why not try something natural instead?” It was this leap of faith – a belief in the healing, restorative powers of natural, essential oils in lieu of chemicals and regular injections – that did the trick. Monica’s son visits the barber regularly these days, and he holds his head high and confidently when he’s out in public, which is marked change from before. “Of course, we still believe modern medicine is important,” she reassured me. “If someone has a cavity, I wouldn’t just put oils on

it and expect it to get better. But for this one thing – for us – we thought we’d give it a try. It wasn’t going to hurt anybody, and there was a chance it could work. As a parent, you do as much as you can for your kids. The results weren’t instant, but he’s so proud of his hair now. It’s all about what works for him, and for us. And this did it.” The recipe Monica used for her son’s alopecia can be found in An Introductory Guide for Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, from Sonoma Press, and the necessary essential oils can be purchased locally in Strathmore. We’re so happy that Monica and her son were able to find a solution that’s continuing to work for them, and wish anybody else suffering from alopecia a similar measure of success in their fight against the disease.

This is a universal fact. Unfortunately, we fail to exercise the same kind of diligence to ensure we perform at our highest potential personally and professionally. During the last couple of years, our world changed dramatically. Many unexpected curves appeared, both literally and figuratively, bringing disruption and dramatic changes for individuals and humanity as a whole. Balance, along with lives, was somehow lost.

curve in the road. Reasons for the upheaval may vary. Pushing a vehicle to the limits, inattention, distractions, going too fast and lack of experience could all be contributing factors to losing control. Learning and practicing good techniques come in handy for the day you hit a slippery road or for when road conditions suddenly change. Cruising familiar roads is easy; however, it can lead to complacency. Maintenance may be neglected and before too long, performance isn’t quite what it used to be. The fascination men (and an increasing number of women) show in high performance vehicles is evident in their attention to the things that produce the best results.

I could get back on the road. It was important to find balance and perspective, especially since my life was in disarray and emotions were running rampant at times. Instead of braking (breaking), time was spent recalibrating my life. The way I think about and do things changed, becoming fine-tuned through expert input. The world as we know it continues to change dramatically, creating uncertainty regarding what lies ahead. There is a 50/50 possibility that it will be what we want. Can we change those odds? I believe so. Are we doing things to prepare us for navigating the slippery or unpredictable changes? I hope so. Riding a motorcycle brought me freedom and joy I’d never experienced before. Alone time gained new meaning, providing fresh perspectives and took me places I normally wouldn’t go. On the road there are many things a rider has no control over. The same is true in life. Personally and professionally, it is valuable to gain an understanding of the different physiological impacts occurring and learn skills to help navigate them to achieve greater success. SUMMER

CAMP

There is a job that I think every teenager or young adult in Canada should work at least once in their high school or university lives: summer camp staff. Working at summer camp is almost a rite of passage into adulthood, in my mind. It prepares for future careers and is a preparation like no other for parenthood. If you have

not spent two sleep-deprived months with children clinging to you like a pack of capuchin monkeys, you just haven’t really been best prepared for adulthood. Parenting will come as a shock. (It still is shocking even if you have spent seven summers at Camp Granada, but perhaps a bit less) Camp prepares you for the sacrifices your body will need to endure for the sake of your offspring. Packing children and their twig and rock collections like a Sherpa; sticky hands touching you with what you hope is marshmallow, going hours without a bathroom break and feeling like you might just die from your bladder bursting. These are all things camp staff endure and mature from. If you have never had to remove roasted marshmallow from a screaming child’s hair, you have not been prepared for adulthood. If you don’t have the experience of dealing with bed-wetters, homesickness and unexplainable bouts of hyperactivity (and this is just from your fellow camp staff), you are not prepared for adulthood. If you have not had the pleasure of tick and lice checks and the joy of removing leaches off screaming, sunburnt, prepubescent bodies, you are not prepared for adulthood. If you have never suffered through the itch and pain of sunburnt, mosquito bit body parts, then you are not prepared. If the thought of kids sugared up on red Kool-Aid doesn’t make you break out in hives, you are not ready. If you don’t have a list of children’s names that you swear you will never ever name your child because that was the name of “that” kid from camp – you still have room for more preparation. You are not ready if you haven’t eaten half cooked pancakes or banana boats or your body weight in s’mores. You are not ready if you haven’t bandaged twenty-seven skinned knees in a summer. You are not ready for adulthood until you have led a gaggle of giggling eight year old girls on midnight kitchen raid where you proceeded to blow mini-marshmallows out your nose like a lead ball out of a cannon. If you don’t know the exact number of marshmallows you can stuff in your mouth and still recite the alphabet – you, my friend – have missed out on one of the rites of passage into the boring world of adulthood. Summer camp is like a kumbaya version of boot camp with just a lot more marshmallows. However, instead of turning out soldiers, summer camp turns out empathetic, responsible young men and women that just happen to know how to turn any piece of thread into a friendship bracelet. It gives them a wealth of skills and experience that is hard to get anywhere else. It makes employment coaches’ jobs easy – so many good skills. I get happy shivers just thinking about the cover letters I can write for camp counsellors and cabin leaders.

I was in university but one, working camp jobs in a variety of roles ranging from camp director to lifeguard and canoe instructor. Those experiences helped to shape me into the awesomely cool and modest person that I am today. I can’t wait for my sons to experience the fun of being a staff member at summer camp. It really is an amazing experience and if it is something you (or perhaps your teen) would be interested in, then I suggest you start getting prepared. Most camp jobs are advertised and filled long before summer vacation begins. If you wait until June to apply, odds are it will be too late. If you want a competitive edge, make sure you have current first aid and CPR certification. Younger teens can look into what camps offer a CIT or councillor-in-training program. A great place to get information on summer camps in Alberta and which camps are hiring is the Alberta Camping Association website at www.albertacamping. com. And, as always, if you would like help with a resume or cover letter for a summer camp job, or any job at all, I’d be really happy to help you out with it. If you are lucky, I will even teach you all the words to Camp Granada… Hello mother, hello father, here I am at Camp Granada, Camp is very entertaining, and they say we will have if it stops raining. Cheers - Gaylene

It’s been a pretty incredible month for New Soul Duo. When I spoke to Vance Alexander –

one half of the self-described power-cover duo that we’re featuring for this month’s music column – he had just got back into town after being on the road with his bandmate, Anthony Blaine, for a show. This was no ordinary gig, though: New Soul Duo had just been half-way around the world a few days earlier, bringing their musical talents all the way to Middle Eastern country of Bahrain! “We were representing Canada for the World Petroleum Congress,” Alexander explained to me. Just like the Olympics, nations make bids to host this prestigious, triennial event. Canada was vying to host the WPC in Vancouver for the 23rd iteration of the meeting in 2020, and was up against Houston, Texas. Along with New Soul Duo, there were indigenous dancers, magicians, and a host of other entertainers and presenters, all aimed at representing the best Canada had to offer. Ultimately, the Council voted to hold the event in Houston (this was the third time the American city had been in the running, after two unsuccessful bids to host the 2014 and 2017 WPCs), but New Soul Duo was just happy to have had the opportunity to make the trip. “It was an amazing experience,” Alexander said, “and we had lots of people coming up and telling us they really liked our music. It was great.” Alexander took a moment to break down the history of New Soul Duo for me. The two musicians met three years ago in the studio – but not as bandmates. Alexander was there doing some recording for a different project, and Blaine was behind the soundboard. Blaine liked what he heard, and gave Alexander some CDs of his own material to check out. Impressed, Alexander reached back out to Blaine to put some tunes together, and New Soul Duo was born, with Blaine on guitar and lead vocals, and Alexander on drums, percussion, and back-up vocals. While their Bahrain trip was certainly a stand-out experience, it exemplifies what New Soul Duo is focused on achieving as a band. “I’ve been playing live for over 25 years,” Alexander told me, “and New Soul Duo is by far the most successful band I’ve been a part of.” When pressed to explain where he thought this success came

Readers Choice Best in Business Awards Preview:

Music From the Soul

from, Alexander summed it up as the vibe that the band embodies: they’re crowd-pleasers. With a focus on playing weddings, events, and corporate gigs like the Bahrain show, New Soul Duo caters to a unique market – one that is hungry for great-sounding live music played by talented artists, but isn’t interested in the egos or pretensions that typical rock bands carry around with them. “We’re pushing the corporate side of things,” Alexander says, mincing no words. “That’s where the money’s at. Our mission is to get people out onto the dance floor, to have a great time, and to make life-long friends and connections while we’re at it.” Alexander admits that this isn’t a popular sentiment among some of the more traditional rock bands out there, who would accuse New Soul Duo of “selling out” by aiming to focus on corporate events and conferences over pub gigs and concert halls. From a realistic perspective, though, New Soul Duo’s aims make a lot of sense: if you can make a living by getting up on stage and playing music, it seems to me that you’re doing something right; let the haters hate, you’re living the dream. “It’s not all about me and my guitar,” Alexander summarizes, referencing the stereotypical rock & roll egoism, “For us, it’s all about the show and the crowd. It’s about loving and giving.” We couldn’t agree more. Catch New Soul Duo live at the 2nd Annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards, happening January 21st at the Strathmore Civic Centre. You can also catch a preview at Legends in Strathmore on January 20th. 9pm show time. Are you putting together an event that needs some entertainment? Check out New Soul Duo’s website at http://newsoulduo.com, or find them on Facebook – they’ll bring great music and an easy-going, fun atmosphere to whatever you’ve got planned! ~ Kyle Penn Tickets 60% sold out Gets Yours now thenewsyneighbour.com facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour • 37

Luscious Joys I really must confess that I am not a huge fruit eater, and I never have been. If you asked me what

my favourite fruit was, I would really have to sit and think about it. The Canadian Food Guide says that you should eat at least 4 serving of fruit or vegetables per day and if you are over 51 years of age, you should have 7! Seriously, I wonder how many people can say that they do this. I didn’t think I have enough time in the day to eat that much fruit! But that has all changed and all because of a garage sale—I knew there was a reason I went to garage sales. As we all know, garage sales always have a box or two of books. I cannot remember when I have been to a garage sale that was not selling books! I don’t need more books and at any given time I’m trying to get rid of all the books I have. But, of course, I always must go and look into the book box just in case there is a hidden treasure in there. Lo and behold, I found that hidden treasure—a book that made me consider eating fruit. Miracles do happen. Let me explain. As I was flipping through the pages of “Fit and Fast Meals in Minutes,” I noticed that several of the recipes in this fabulous recipe book contained alcohol. Now that is my kind of cookbook. And the recipe that caught my eye was right there on page 196 “MELON WITH OUZO”. I immediately bought the book for a whole $1.00--smoking deal and a book that got me excited about eating fruit. For those of you who do not know what “Ouzo” is, it is distilled from grapes and the best ouzo is known to come from the Greek island, Lesvos. It is made at about 45% alcohol, so it’s very strong. The Greeks include ouzo in their kitchens, using it to create some signature Greek dishes and give food and/or desserts that anise taste. Love those Greeks—no wonder Greece has always been my number one vacation spot on my wish list. (You cannot always find “Ouzo” but “Sambuca” is much the same.) Now, when you are wondering what to serve at your next dinner party that is going to get your guests excited, probably in more ways than one, I am going to share this super easy absolutely Luscious recipe with you.

over the fruit. Let stand about 40 minutes or so and serve. Really, you could use this recipe for any of your favourite fruits. And when you think about it, you could also use any of your favourite liqueurs. Just think about the possibilities! Why had I not thought of this before? I guess maybe I might start eating my 4 servings of fruit a day after all. See, you just never know what treasure you might pick up at a garage sale.

Kotopoulo Me Ouzo And Lahanika: Chicken In Cream Sauce

Ouzo adds a delightful light anise taste to this dish of chicken with vegetables in a cream sauce. 1/2 pound of skinless chicken breasts 2/3 cup of carrots, coarsely grated 2/3 cup of zucchini, coarsely grated 6 1/2 tablespoons of heavy cream 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of ouzo sea salt freshly ground pepper Cut the chicken into large square chunks. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed frying pan. When hot, add the chicken and sauté for 4 minutes. Add the carrots and zucchini and continue to sauté 3 minutes longer. Add the ouzo, cream, salt, and pepper and cook 2-3 minutes more until the sauce melds. Serve hot. This recipe is only enough for one person, so double or triple recipe as necessary. An Interesting The Accountable$ Year “We make your dollars make sense”

This has been one of the more interesting years I have had in Rocky View County. We had some weather wins and losses. The end of last winter was pretty benign; I can't recall any crazy snow events like we have grown accustomed to from time to time. It appeared we were going to have a nice summer and then it rained and rained. We didn't get a big huge hit but a combination of multiple small rains soaked the land to the point of exposing any storm water weaknesses in the area. Pumping in the rural areas seem to go on forever; I know the County pumping budget wasn't just bumped a bit – it was blown apart! By the end of the year, the Ag producers scrambled a bit around the weather but seemed to get the fields cleared, I heard of 11 combines in one field, a nice story of co-operation but I'm sure they were a little nervous at the time. The year is going out like a lamb, I have been free of snow complaints so far – none! – for the first time since I was elected! I admit, I kind of miss it – I do like hearing from people. It's hard to have snow problems when there is no snow. Early in the year we got through the Area Structure Plan update, not ideal in my humble opinion, but workable. It was interesting to watch the process unfold, it taught me just how busy people's lives are in general, and it also taught me that there are many ways people let their views be known. I think governments of all sorts need to adjust how they receive information in general, communication has definitely changed. I take pride in being available to receive information in every style of media there is and some days I get more from social media and email than anyone ever got from ordinary mail and phone calls, times have changed. One of the biggest successes this year was witnessing the strides that have been made by the volunteer groups in Langdon. They way everyone is working together is not just impressive but it is also award winning. The Langdon Community Collaborative, a groups of groups, was recognized for its great work and it is fast becoming the benchmark other communities are aspiring to. We had CBC radio broadcasting from the Prairie Grounds coffee shop a short time ago and the LCC was the subject of one of the segments, impressive indeed.

That's how things get going, the good stuff seems to catch on, maybe there will be more next year and more the year after. Someday, who knows, maybe Langdon will be the community where people go to look at the Christmas lights. That is one of the best things about being part of a growing Community, we get to watch it get better and better. It gives me a great sense of pride being part of it, I am constantly impressed with the drive of our not-so-little hamlet, thank you everyone who puts forward any effort you can, collectively it matters. I am a “Spice Girl!” Not the famous kind unfortunately, but spices are my favourite! I can-

not cook anything without adding spices to the recipe; they just add so much depth and savour to your dish-- appetizers, soups, salads, eggs, side dishes, entrées, even desserts. My favourite spice by far is Italian Seasoning, with its mixture of oregano, basil, onion, garlic, peppers, and herbs. I find it is just perfect for any of your culinary masterpieces. Plus oregano is used to treat respiratory tract disorders, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, menstrual cramps, and urinary tract disorders and basil is known to be an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and powerful adaptogen — meaning, it helps the body to respond to stress and to fight disease.

People have the misconception that “Italian Seasoning” is just for Italian dishes, but that could not be farther from the truth. I am here to share some of my favourite – fantastic – fun recipes using “Italian Seasoning”. When you purchase your Italian Seasoning, make sure you buy the one that has no artificial colours or flavours!

Italian-Seasoned Roast Chicken Breasts

1 tbsp Italian Seasoning 1 tsp grated lemon rind 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice 4 tsp extra-virgin olive oil ½ tsp fennel seeds, crushed ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 3 garlic cloves, minced 4 bone-in chicken breast halves Cooking spray Preheat oven to 425°F, combine first 8 ingredients in a bowl, stirring well. Loosen skin from chicken by inserting fingers, gently pushing between skin and meat. Rub rosemary mixture under loosened skin over flesh; rub over top of skin. Place chicken, bone side down, on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray. Coat skin lightly with cooking spray. Bake at 425°F for 35 minutes or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest portion of the breast registers 155°F. Remove chicken from pan; let stand for 10 minutes. I serve these fabulous chicken breasts with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

Fabulous Shrimp

1 1/2 lb shelled shrimp or prawns 1 cup butter 1 lemon, sliced thin 2 tbsp Italian Seasoning Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets, covering the sides also, with foil. Melt butter in oven on lined cookie sheet. Lay lemon slices on melted butter. Lay shrimp on top of butter and lemons. Sprinkle the Italian Seasoning on top of shrimp. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes, until light golden brown. This is great alone or served on pasta or rice using melted butter/lemon juice drizzled on top.

THE NOBLE GAME OF

At Coldwell, we are real people serving real people. We’re committed to you and your family’s PEACE OF MIND.

When was the last time you heard it called billiards?

Maybe if you live in Britain or France they may still call it that, but here in Canada I have never heard anyone call it anything but, “A game of Pool”. But pool has a very long and distinguished history and originally was developed by Kings and Nobleman. It evolved from a lawn game similar to croquet played sometime during the 15th century in Northern Europe and France. They moved it indoors to a wooden table with green cloth to simulate grass; a simple border was placed around the edges. The balls were shoved, rather than struck, with wooden sticks called "maces." Then the cue stick was developed in the late 1600’s.

There are many ways to play pool and many different types of games and if you have ever played in a pool league, you will find everyone seems to have their own interpretation of the rules!

Cleaning Companies

The most common game, 8-Ball, is a call shot game played with 15 object balls. One player must pocket balls of the group number 1 through 7 (which are the solid colours), while the other player has numbers 9 through 15 (striped balls). The first to pocket all the balls of either group and finish by legally pocketing the 8-ball wins the game!

Nine-Ball is played with nine object balls numbered one through

nine. On each shot, the first ball (the cue ball) contacts must be the lowest numbered ball on the table. A match ends when one of the players has won the required number of games.

One Pocket is a unique game in which only two of the six pock-

ets are employed for legal scoring. Any ball may be played and need not be called. What is required is that an object ball falls in the player's "target" pocket. The object of the game is to score a total of eight object balls in a player's target pocket before the opponent.

Cut-throat is a great game to play in social situations. It is a perfect game when an odd number of players are participating. The object of the game is to pocket your opponents' balls before the opponents pocket your group of balls. There are many, many other pool games but for the purpose of this article we just don’t have enough time to go into them all. One point that is important to make is that the etiquette of this game is very important to pool players. Have you ever seen a bar fight The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

It costs nothing to do, and spreads good will and friendship in a world where more of both is welcome. And, possibly the most important point to remember, is that most league or other serious players have their own personal pool cue. It is only being respectful that a person is asked first if it is OK for you to handle their pool cue. It is one thing to admire and it is another thing to touch! And finally, pool can be healthy for you; beer and billiards have become a very popular way to socialize (better than being a couch potato!). You will probably find a pool league in most bars. Think about it, there is a surprising amount of walking involved in a round of pool: a typical 2-hour 8-ball game often provides 100 trips around the table’s perimeter, which is about equal to walking nearly three-quarters of a mile. Playing multiple games of pool will stack up these distances and burn even more calories! Playing pool can be a lot of fun and anyone can do it – get out there and have some FUN!

Makaronia Me Thalassina Kai Ouzo: Seafood Pasta With Ouzo

Seafood pasta is given a bump up in taste with the addition of the light anise flavouring from the ouzo. 1 tablespoon of chives, finely chopped 1/2 cup of olive oil 1 pound of shrimp, cleaned and deveined 2 large, ripe tomatoes, peeled, cut into small cubes 2 bay leaves 1 tablespoon of parsley, finely chopped sea salt freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons of ouzo 1 pound of penne pasta In a large, deep frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat, add chives and sauté. As soon as the chives soften, add shrimp, and continue to sauté for 2-3 minutes. Douse (deglaze) with ouzo. Stir in tomatoes, bay leaves, and parsley. Bring to a The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

boil, add salt and pepper, reduce the heat, and cook for 10-12 minutes. In a large stock pot, boil the penne pasta in plenty of well-salted water per package directions. When done, drain, and toss the pasta with a little olive oil. Spread pasta on a serving platter, and top with the seafood mixture (remove bay leaves before serving).

Just a few more quick and easy ideas:

• Use ouzo to flambé dishes with sautéed shrimp, prawns, or crawfish with vegetables. • Add a couple of tablespoons to marinades for grilled shellfish or meats. • Add a teaspoon to vinaigrette dressings. • Use ouzo to sauté onions for use in pitas, salads, or as a side dish with meats. • In recipes calling for fennel or fennel seed, try using ouzo instead. • Use ouzo in crust recipes to add light leavening and crispness. THEY WALK AMONG US!

A guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge (still working), he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: “Free to good home. You want it, you take it.” For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice. He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal. So he changed the sign to read: “Fridge for sale $50.” The next day someone stole it!

“Does the sun rise in the north?” My brother explained that the sun rises in the east and has for some time. She shook her head and said, “Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff...” They Walk Among Us!

My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria, when we overheard an admin girl talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the beach. She drove down in a convertible, but said she "didn't think she'd get sunburned because the car was moving." They Walk Among Us!

They walk amongst us! One day, I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted, "Look at that dead bird!" Someone looked up at the sky and said, "Where?" They walk among us! While looking at a house, my brother asked the estate agent which direction was north because he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked,

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car that is designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the car trunk. They Walk Among Us! I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area and went to the lost luggage office and reported the loss. The woman there smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and said I was in good hands. “Now,” she asked me, “has your plane arrived yet?” (I work with professionals like this.) They Walk Among Us! While working at a pizza parlor, I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. 016

GOODBYE 2016, HELLO 2017!

2

016 was a memorable year in the wide world of sports. Maybe not so much

for fans of the Calgary Stampeders and the Calgary Flames, but in general, it really was an amazing year. New stars were born at the Rio Olympics like Penny Oleksiak, Andre De Grasse and Calgary's own Erica Wiebe. We fell in love with a new sport called Rugby 7's and tell me you didn't watch at least a little beach

volleyball? The Chicago Cubs ended a 108 year championship drought as they stormed back from a huge deficit to win the World Series in dramatic fashion. While Cleveland fans were obviously disappointed with the Indians, at least they were no longer labeled as a city of losers thanks to LeBron James and the NBA Champion Cavaliers. It was the Cavs who battled back from a 3 - 1 series hole to shock the Golden State Warriors. It was Cleveland's first professional championship in 52 years. 2016 was Sidney Crosby's year! He was the NHL playoff MVP leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup. He also captained Team Canada to a win at the World Cup of Hockey where he was also named the best player of the tournament. In football, it was a storybook ending for quarterback Peyton Manning as his last ever game in the NFL was a victory in Super Bowl 50. 41 year old Henry Burris may have written the same script as he found the fountain of youth in Grey Cup 104 against the Calgary Stampeders. In golf, 2016 was the year for Dustin Johnson. He shed the demons as he won his first ever major championship, the US Open and he

was also named the PGA player of the year winning the Vardon Trophy. Golf was a huge story in Calgary and Southern Alberta. Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn won the CN Women's Open at Priddis Greens as 2 million dollars was raised for charity. However the biggest story was the Shaw Charity Classic at Canyon Meadows. In a tough Alberta economy, the tournament shattered its own record for charitable giving on the PGA Tour Champions. The award-winning event raised over 5.2 million for 124 youth-based Alberta groups. A star studded field of PGA Tour Champions players, including Tom Watson, Bernard Langer, Colin Mongomerie, John Daly and 2016 champion Carlos Franco of Paraguay, combined to fire a total of 890 birdies during the three competitive rounds. Yes, 2016 was a memorable year in the world of sports, but unfortunately it was also a sad year. We had to say goodbye to many sporting legends. On June 3rd, the world mourned with the passing of the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) Muhammad Ali. More than just a boxer, Ali was one of the most significant and celebrated figures on the planet. An inspiring, polarizing, controversial activist both inside and outside the ring. He will always "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee." 7 days later, Gordie Howe, known as Mr. Hockey because of his accomplishments and contributions to the sport he loved, died on June 10th. He was 88. In September, more sad news as we learned of the passing

of the China Clipper. The honourable Norman Kwong, a CFL legend who played for the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos, and former part owner of the Calgary Flames and the 16th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Also in September, we said goodbye to the "King". Arnold Palmer was one of golf's most popular stars and one of the games most important trailblazers. Mylan Hicks was not a legend in the football world, but the tragic shooting death of the Stamps practice roster player outside of a Calgary night club will forever be remembered as one of the top stories in 2016. Dying in the arms of teammate Jerome Messam, it was a senseless act that united a team and a city. So now that 2016 is in the books, what can we look forward to in 2017? Will the Calgary Flames return to the NHL post season party? Can the Calgary Stampeders keep the core together and take another run at a CFL championship in Ottawa? In my opinion, the biggest stories to watch will be away from the field of play. Former Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson is the chair for the 2016 Olympic bid exploration committee. His committee has been tasked to create a Master Hosting Plan, which will provide an analysis of the capital and operating costs for hosting the games. An interim report will be presented to City Council this month and a final report in July. Depending on the outcome of this report, the city will decide whether or not to proceed with an Olympic bid. Not surprising, chatter has been very quiet on the Calgary Flames new arena and stadium complex, "Calgary Next." Calgary Sport and Entertainment President and CEO Ken King has been very clear that the Olympic bid and Calgary Next are not connected. However, an Olympic bid will certainly not hurt the team's chances of getting some new, much needed facilities. As I have said all along with the Calgary Next project, I may not be in love with the location, but I certainly like the vision. Here's hoping 2017 will bring us a little clarity on Calgary Next or the city's plan B to build a new arena on the Stampede Grounds and major upgrades to McMahon Stadium. If Calgary Next is put on the shelf for plan B, I will not be surprised if we get good news on a much needed field house in our city. Funding is in place and this has been flagged as a priority by the city. It only makes sense to put this new facility by the University of Calgary. One comeback story I am looking forward to seeing in 2017 is that of speed skater Denny Morrison. The three time Olympian narrowly survived a motorcycle crash in 2015 and a stroke in 2016. Morrison is rounding into form and just may be able to compete for Canada at the World Sprint Championships, hosted

attend the various Christmas concerts put on by our schools. Seeing the absolute joy on the faces of all the “cutie patooties” in their elf, moose, reindeer, snowman, etc. costumes reminds us all of what really matters in life: our families and our friends. I hope you all have a happy and healthy new year. As we enter 2017, there is some positive news on the oil price front. Unfortunately, our NDP Government keeps passing ideological legislation that will see much of the benefits exported to other jurisdictions. The Carbon Tax, the Oil Sands Emissions Limit Act, the Renewable Energy Act and the Electric Utilities Amendment Act could be called the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse for the Alberta Advantage” as they ensure that: 1. Our industry will be less competitive. Our jobs and prosperity will be exported to other jurisdictions with lower environmental standards. The International Energy Agency predicts that oil demand will continue to increase until at least 2040. Too bad the NDP doesn’t want us to share in the wealth this could bring. A Fraser Institute report estimates that the Emissions Cap alone will result in lost production totalling between 150 and 250 Billion Dollars to the Alberta economy. Think of all the schools, hospitals, infrastructure and opportunities for you and your children this lost money could buy you. 2. The average Albertan will be paying much more in taxes and fees to satisfy the NDP’s ideological experiments. 3. Your children will be faced with paying off massive debts. Debt servicing means that your tax dollars will be paying bankers, not providing necessary services. Please let us know what you think of this, if you are able to block out the 24/7 propaganda ads from the Government paid for with borrowed money.

Speaking of expanding waistlines, there is a risk you may be tempted in January at the second annual Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Awards Gala. This year’s event goes January 21 at the Strathmore Civic Centre. Aleesha, Denise, the rest of the Newsy Neighbour team and Yours Truly are huge supporters of local business. Why? It JUST MAKES SENSE! I’ve said this before but it is worth repeating. Local business people are your neighbours. Their children go to school with yours. Their business taxes pay for many of the services that make your communities great places to live and raise a family. Local businesses know that happy customers are repeat customers. When you shop local, everybody wins! Last year’s Gala was a huge success and I hope to see you at this year’s as the local businesses that went the “extra mile” and received your votes are honoured. The food was great last year and what the heck, there’s always February to honour those New Year’s resolutions! See the Newsy Neighbour website for tickets; I’ve already bought mine. One more political note. I have been blessed with a new challenge as the Shadow Minister for Education and for Status of Women. It was a privilege to serve you as the Shadow Minister for Energy and the relationships I made and the respect I have for our Energy Sector and the great Albertans that work in it will never leave me. I will continue to report to you on energy issues as well as my new portfolios and I look forward to hearing from you on any issues of concern. It is your views that inform and inspire me in the Legislature. We have many challenges but I firmly believe that Albertans make this the greatest province in the greatest country in the world and we will overcome them. I am honoured to serve you. Leela Sharon Aheer, MLA

WHY ADVERTISE?

The key to any successful small business is advertising. You need to make your potential clients aware of your business and products. This is the KEY!

1. Advertise to Reach New Customers.

Your market changes constantly. New families in the area means new customers to reach. People earn more money, which changes their lifestyles and buying habits. The shopper who wouldn't consider your business a few years ago may be a prime customer now. Remember, 20% of families will move this year, 5 million people will be married and 4 million babies will be born.

2. Advertise Continuously.

Shoppers don't have the store loyalty they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition. The National Retail Merchants Association states: “Mobility and non-loyalty are rampant. Stores must promote to get former customers to return and to seek new ones.” Furthermore, if a business only

advertises one month, they may not reach every potential customer. Shoppers who don’t need a specific merchant one month may need it the following.

9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image.

Many people postpone buying decisions. They often go from store to store comparing prices, quality and service. Advertising must reach them steadily through the entire decision-making process. Your name must be fresh in their minds when they ultimately decide to buy.

10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale.

3. Advertise to Remain With Shoppers Through the Buying Process.

4. Advertise Because Your Competition is Advertising.

There are only so many consumers in the market who are ready to buy at any one time. You'll need to advertise to keep regular customers and to counterbalance the advertising of your competition. You must advertise to keep your share of customers or you will lose them to the more aggressive competitors.

5. Advertise Because it Pays Off Over a Long Period.

In a competitive market, rumours and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects misleading gossip, punctures "overstated" bad news. Advertising that is vigorous and positive can bring shoppers into the marketplace, regardless of the economy. When advertising and promotion are suddenly cut or cancelled, salespeople may become alarmed and demoralized. They may start false rumours in an honest belief that your business is in trouble. Positive advertising boosts morale. It gives your staff strong additional support.

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Rental Properties in Strathmore

Advertising gives you a long-term advantage over competitors who cut back or cancel advertising. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found advertisers who maintain or expand advertising over a five year period see their sales increase an average of 100%. Companies, which cut advertising, averaged sales decreases of 45%.

6. Advertise to Generate Store Traffic.

Continuous store traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of shoppers. The more people who come into the store, the more possibilities you have to make sales and sell additional merchandise. For every 100 items that shoppers plan to buy, they make 30 unanticipated "in the store" purchases, an NRMA survey shows.

7. Advertise to Make More Sales.

Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You'll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.

8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate.

Your doors are open. Salespeople are on the payroll. Even the slowest days produce sales. As long as you're in business, you have overhead to meet and new people to reach. Advertising can generate customers now and in the future.

to sell rose from 52 to 64. The benchmark sale price went down 2.9% to $478,700. Chestermere is unique and provides a lifestyle no other community in or close to Calgary can offer with its beautiful lake, beach and pathways and continues to attract newcomers. In Langdon, we saw about the same number in total residential MLS sales in 2015 and 2016; there was 74 sales, 123 listings in total, the sale price/list price ratio remained strong at 97.93%. Average days on market to sell improved from 52 to 43. The average sale price went down 3.2% to $469,500. Langdon offers homes with large 1/2 acre lots and room for all your toys, hot rods and campers, which makes it a popular place to reside or raise a family with all the basic amenities. Strathmore saw a drop in total residential MLS sales from 2015 of 296 to 194 sales in 2016. However, the average sale price went up 3.6% to $325,205. There were 409 listings in total. The sale price/list price ratio remained strong at 97.33%, and average days on market to sell stayed the same as 2015 at 61 days. Strathmore offers a very strong and active community and affordable prices with all amenities, great schools, sports facilities, and many routes to Calgary.

A year in review... 2016 YYE East Region by MLS Serving YYC East Region - Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere, Wheatland County and surrounding area in 2016 was better than we had expected in some aspects and not so great in others, considering all of the challenges that presented themselves, like the high unemployment,

Wheatland County saw in total acreage MLS sales in 2016, 29 sales which was down from 39 sales 2015. The average sale price, however, went up from $480,000 in 2015 to $560,599 in 2016. The sale price/list price ratio remained strong at 96.05%. Average days to sell increased to 86 from 66. Wheatland County offers more relaxed lifestyle options with added value and continues to attract new comers. Article written by Carey Rose. All statistics were taken from the Calgary Real Estate Board MLS market data reportings as of November 30, 2016. the changes in mortgage qualification, changes in capital gains reporting, the US election, AND the list goes on. The YYC East region, though, continues to offer added value and unique lifestyle options that I think have helped and will continue to.

Chestermere saw, in total residential MLS sales, a drop from 357 to 232 sales in 2016. There was 569 listings in total, the sale price/list price ratio remained strong at 96.71%. Average days

GUARANTEED!! · Over 15 years mortgage lending experience · Access to over 50 lenders · Including the chartered banks · 24/7 Availability · Evening and Weekend Calls Welcome · Unlimited Accessibility · A more relaxed qualifying criteria • Self Employed Applicants • Client Applications With Less Than Perfect Credit

I WORK ON YOUR BEHALF to ensure that you receive the best interest rate possible.

Now that we have said goodbye to 2016 and welcomed in the New Year, one thing remains clear…the evolution of the mortgage financing industry continues.

PLUS, using a mortgage broker does NOT cost you any money!

Now it appears to be more important than ever to consult the advice of a mortgage professional to assist clients with sorting through all of the most recent batch of changes and getting a better understanding of the financing process moving forward.

Save THOUSANDS THO USANDS in

unnecessary interest!

For years, people wishing to purchase or refinance a home have always gone to the same place…their bank. Is this the best option for everyone? Not necessarily, but it is the one alternative that most people have been aware of, or felt obligated to use... perhaps until now.

Jason Eldridge Mortgage Specialist Cell:

PFP, B.Admin

In the past, mortgage brokers were often called upon in cases where the client(s) did not qualify under traditional criteria, or they needed money quickly, and hence had to borrow from a “loan shark”. While mortgage brokers still assist clients with bruised credit or other qualifying challenges, the vast majority of our clientele is made up of clients with good job stability, and excellent credit history.

Respect dementia care

Dignity long term care Trust independent living Quality Caring

Teamwork assisted & supportive living So what are the advantages of working with a dedicated mortgage professional? Firstly (and perhaps the biggest reason for most clients), is the interest rate that can obtained. When you go to your bank, more often than not, you will be put into the uncomfortable situation of having to negotiate with your banker for a better rate. When you work with a broker, if you qualify for the best rates (based on your credit history), you automatically get the best rates. No tied selling. No moving all of your other banking and investments to the new lender to get the better rate. And the best part…it doesn’t cost you a thing. There is no charge for our service (when working with a chartered bank or regular financial institution. Even a ¼% reduction in your interest rate, can save you thousands of dollars in unnecessary interest costs. Secondly, you have more lenders and options to choose from. When you go to your own bank, you only have access to their mortgage products. Mortgage brokers have access to over 30 lenders, including many of the chartered banks, so we have access to a vast array of mortgage options to suit your particular needs and goals. While there can be subtle differences, something as simple as better prepayment privileges or a lower prepayment penalty (if necessary) may be a reason for choosing one institution over another. Thirdly, mortgage brokers cater to your schedule, not the other way around. Don’t you enjoy the process of calling your bank and then you are told that they can’t see you for a week or so because they are already “booked up” with appointments? Mortgage brokers will meet with you where and when you prefer, or at the very least offer you the convenience of arranging your financing via phone, fax and/or email. Generally speaking, you can be pre-approved for mortgage financing the same day you apply. Finally, mortgage specialists are able to offer their clients a more flexible qualifying process. If you don’t happen to meet all of your banks’ criteria, they will often turn you away, whereas a broker will continue to source your application to as many lenders as required to find you the financing you require based on your personal situation. Being a mortgage professional for over 15 years and an additional 10 years working for the chartered banks, I have a vast knowledge of both the chartered banks and other financial institutions as well as their product line up. Often today, there is high turnover among staff within the banks, and with the sales team representing the banks being responsible for selling so many products and services, one might ask if they have the knowledge and experience to assist clients with perhaps the biggest invest-

ment and loan of their lives. If you are looking for a change, and would like to experience the convenience and value of working with a dedicated mortgage professional, please ensure that they have their proper accreditation. As a mortgage specialist working with Axiom Mortgage Solutions, I am governed by the Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association (AMBA), the Real Estate Council of Alberta(RECA) and Mortgage Professionals Canada(MPC). As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a Mortgage Moment with the Mortgage Mogul.
