HAHAHA Do You Get Sidetracked?

SDCOC Celebrates Small Business Week throughout October

I decide to water my garden.

As I turn on the hose, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the table that I collected from the letter box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycle bin under the table, and notice that it is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first. But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the recycling anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my chequebook off the table, and see that there is only 1 cheque left. My extra cheques are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I’d been drinking. I’m going to look for my cheques, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don’t accidentally knock it over. The Coke is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the fridge to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye – they need watering. I put the Coke on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I’ve been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realise that tonight when we watch TV, I’ll be looking for the remote control, but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the front room where it belongs, but first I’ll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote control back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day, - the car isn’t washed - the bills aren’t paid - there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the worktop - the flowers don’t have enough water - there is still only 1 cheque in my chequebook - I can’t find the remote control - I can’t find my glasses - and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I’m really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I’ll try to get some help for it, but first I’ll check my e-mail.

Welcome to our Seventh Annual House & Home Issue! We publish this special Issue every year, not only in recognition of all the new-home builders, realtors and mortgage brokers who have consistently supported “The Newsy” from the beginning, but also for all the informative articles this issue seems to produce from all our talented team of contributors. With the downturn in our economy here in Alberta, the more than a dozen new-home builders and 25+ contractors in this issue, who keep people in jobs and the economy turning, have become more important than ever. We must make sure we support these businesses, as they also support us!

A Heartfelt Thank You! On August 30, the absolute unthinkable happened – my brother, 33 year old Jonathan Sobol was killed in a car accident. He was a renowned chef, advocate for supporting local, a teacher, an uncle, brother, son and friend. While our absolute worst fears were being realized, the entire towns of Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere and surrounding areas stepped up and embraced my entire family in a huge love-filled hug. Friends, some whom I hadn’t seen or spoken to in a long time, brought food and treats to us. You offered help with our kids, our pets, a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. You offered prayers, condolences, hugs, wishes, messages, cards and kind thoughts to our family. Our loss is immeasurable, yet we receive great solace knowing that our community supports us and grieves with us. On behalf of my entire family – my parents, Bob and Gina Sobol, my brother Tom Sobol, my husband Ryan Geremia, and our children Aryn and Lucas – thank you for everything over the past month. Special thank you to Pastor Glenn Peterson, his wife Bekah, Hope Community Church, Wheatland Funeral Home, the Strathmore and Beiseker RCMP, Wheatland Victim Services, and Internal Affairs Customized Cleaning Services and to you, our readers, advertisers and friends. Luscious Joys CAKE. Now doesn’t that word just perk up your ears? Think

about all the luscious cakes you have eaten in your life. Visions of chocolate, whipping cream, fruit and ice-cream pop into my head – yes, let’s all say it again together: CAKE! Wonderful, delicious and you could make a different cake every single day of the year and still have not made all the different varieties of cake in the world. Is there anything more wonderful? Well I am here to share with you a few crazy different ways you can use your cake mix and they are such wonderful and inspirational ideas! I’m sure they will make you think of your very own ideas of what you can do with that box of cake mix you have had setting in the back of your cupboard for months!

Lookin' for some great eats and delicious treats?

Double Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

Through The Newsy Neighbour Website, you get access to the best menus - and all in one location - saving you time, money and search engine headaches. Pick and choose from a variety of acclaimed local venues from your laptop, desktop, telephone or tablet. Yes - it's just that easy!

www.thenewsyneighbour.com Chestermere’s Longest Running, Locally Owned, and Operated, Food and Beverage Establishment

½ cup butter 1 egg 1 packet instant coffee dissolved in 2 tbsp water 1 tbsp oil ½ tsp vanilla 1 box chocolate cake mix 1 ½ cup chocolate chips 1 ½ cup white chocolate chips Preheat the oven to 350°F. Beat the butter until smooth. Add the egg and beat again until incorporated. Add the coffee, oil, and vanilla and beat until combined. Add the cake mix in batches and beat slowly after each addition until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and white chocolate chips. Roll into balls and place on a baking sheet a few inches apart. Bake for 7-10 minutes, until the tops are just set (not wet-looking anymore), the cookies are evenly flattened, and they are starting to get cracks in them. If the cookies are done, they should come off the pan relatively easily with a spatula. If the cookies are not holding together, you probably need to bake them a little longer. Remove from the baking sheet and let cool for a few minutes before serving. The timing on this one is kind of important to get that soft, chewy texture, so make sure to look for the signs of doneness (flattened out, slightly cracked tops, cookie holding together, etc.) to get it right for your oven.

Domino’s Pizza in Strathmore ings only. Double or triple the Standard quantities of regular topp ings, and any quantities of topp standard quantities of regular an extra charge. at lable avai are , ings topp premium

½ cup yellow cake mix, dry ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ cup colour sprinkles Cream Cheese Glaze 1 cup powdered sugar 2 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 tsp. vanilla 2-3 tbsp. milk Slice bread to make ½-1 inch sections, slicing almost all the way to the bottom of the loaf. Be careful not to cut too far or to cut through. Use a serrated knife and cut on inch slices all the way down the width way of the loaf. Then use kitchen shears to snip the ½-1 inch sections on each row, just to avoid any of them tearing off. Place loaf on cookie sheet. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, yellow cake mix and cinnamon. Stir to evenly mix together. Set aside. Evenly pour and distribute melted butter between each of the sections, making sure to get in-between each one. Trust me, you want the buttery goodness :) If you need more butter, simply melt as much more as needed. Evenly sprinkle/pour sugar/cake mix mixture between each of the sections. Rub in to cover them if necessary. Be care not to tear any of the sections. Bake at 350°F for about 25 minutes. While the Cake Batter Pull Bread is baking, make the glaze. Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and beat until smooth. Add more powdered sugar/milk as needed to reach desired consistency. Drizzle as much as desired over warm bread. Sprinkle with some added sprinkles, if desired. Serve warm.

Cake Mix Waffles

Use a box of Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix, or any cake mix for that matter, and followed the instructions to make the cake batter. The box says either water or milk but I always use milk. Follow the instructions of your waffle maker on how to make waffles, pour the batter into your waffle maker and when the light goes off, they are ready. Make sure you put a scoop of ice cream on the waffle while warm. You will not regret it. Talk about easy and delicious. You could also use some

chocolate or caramel syrup over the ice-cream; now that would be decadent.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars

1 white cake mix 2 eggs ⅓ cup canola oil ½ cup crunchy peanut butter (or creamy) ½ cup grape jelly (or other flavor) 1 cup peanut butter chips Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix together cake mix, eggs, oil and peanut butter. Set aside ½ cup of the mixture. Press remaining mixture into a parchment lined, greased 8”x 8" square pan. Spread jelly over the crust in pan. Mix the ½ cup of cookie mixture with the peanut butter chips until large crumbles appear. Sprinkle the crumbles evenly over the crust in the pan. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes. O.K. I cannot take it anymore! As soon as I finish this article, I am immediately going into my kitchen to whip up something incredibly bad for my diet and it most certainly will be made out of cake mix! 50 extra sit-ups tonight.

Enjoy!

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER A Pair of Diabetic Feet

DIABETIC FOOT CARE IN THE WINTER Hello, Larry here! It is October, folks! Roger and I cannot believe how fast September flew by… we have perfected our Decadent Chocolate Cake and have offered to serve it at our Thanksgiving family get-together. We know it will be a hit. We are still getting our steps in, but have been getting concerned about what the winter months will bring and how we will handle being good diabetics with the challenges that winter brings to all of us in this Prairie Climate. Roger has done some more internet surfing. He has come up with this spectacular list to share with us. Thank you, Roger. This is a great read for diabetics and care providers.

TIPS FOR DIABETIC FOOT CARE IN THE WINTER

People with diabetes always have to be extra vigilant about foot problems since the disease increases the likelihood of certain conditions developing and also makes them more of a health threat. Warm Feet. The combination of poor circulation and neuropathy that comes with diabetes presents a host of potential temperature regulation problems for the feet. Some people may experience cold feet all the time (in part because of decreased blood flow), while others, due to a lack of sensation, may not be able to accurately perceive hot or cold on the skin. It’s important to wear thick socks to keep feet warm. Avoid using hot water bottles, heating pads or heated foot massagers as these can lead to burns on the skin due to decreased ability to feel the heat. Dry Feet. Choose socks that wick away moisture and change them frequently to prevent sweat from building up and creating a damp environment for feet. Damp feet stuck in socks without air circulation creates the perfect scenario for bacterial and fungal infections to thrive. Be sure to dry feet thoroughly after washing them too, particularly between the toes. Safe Shoes. With cold temperatures and icy conditions, footwear

choice is even more important. Choose shoes and boots that have a roomy toe box yet are well fitted to keep the foot secure. Make sure the bottoms are not slippery and the shoes provide warmth. Natural materials such as leather and suede have greater breathability than synthetic materials. Check for arch support in boots—many don’t have it and this can lead to excessive pressure on toes and heels. Skincare. The heat’s on at home, in the car, in stores and just about everywhere we go in the winter. This can lead to dry skin and the risk of cracks or fissures that can be painful and let in harmful bacteria. Infections and ulcers can then develop, which pose a serious medical threat for diabetic people. Stay hydrated and use a good moisturizer on feet daily. Inspecting feet every day and developing a foot care regimen is essential for maintaining healthy feet. Pick up a hand mirror at the dollar store, if you don’t have one, to check the bottoms and backs of your feet if necessary. Ref: Sound Foot Care Centre of Connecticut While Roger was doing that research, I was digging into my own. I was inquiring on where to SAFELY get our steps in on those cold, blustery, slippery, wintery days. I found out some great information on indoor walking for the Town of Strathmore residents… Here is what I now know. *Indoor walking is done in the mornings by many, at the local Walmart. Yup, just show up and walk, no specific time. Some, they say, coffee after! What a great way to get out and be social (and get your steps in). *Rural PCN Strathmore (Primary Care Network) offers indoor walking at Trinity Christian Academy from September 26/2016 to May 27th/2017. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday evenings from 6-6:50pm. This is FREE! Drop in and bring a friend. Why not?! *Town of Strathmore offers indoor walking at the Civic Centre during the winter months. Usually it runs Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to Noon. The schedule was not out when I chatted with Cheryl the coordinator, but should be very soon. You can find it on the Public Skating and Shinny Schedule (Town of Strathmore website). Roger and I have convinced our human that we have no excuse to NOT get our 10 thousand steps in every day! It’s less than 5 miles, people!! ONE STEP AT A TIME… Let’s do this!!! Diabetics or Non Diabetics, Roger and I are calling you out!!!! Hope to see you there. TMJD What is TMJD and what should you know about it?

Temporomandibular joint disorder (or TMJ or TMJD) refers to pain and dysfunction of the muscles that move the jaw. The joints involved are the connection between the jawbone and the skull. TMJD may affect one or both of the joints. It is not life-threatening, but the pain and discomfort experienced can be significant. The cause can be many different things. Amongst the most commonly listed causes are: ● Injury to the jaw, TM joint, or muscles of the head and neck. This might occur from trauma like a heavy blow or whiplash. ● Grinding or clenching your teeth. ● Arthritis in the TM joint. ● Stress which can cause tightening of facial and jaw muscles or clenching of the teeth. ● Movement of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket of the joint. The three major symptoms are pain, limitation of movement of the joint, and clicking noises of the joint. There are various other symptoms that are less definite, but still problematic. The pain can vary from severe to mere slight discomfort; it can be temporary or last for years. TMJ is somewhat more common in women than men, and it’s more common between ages 20 - 40. Various other symptoms that are less definite, but still problematic include: ● tired face ● trouble with chewing because it feels like upper and lower jaws don’t fit together ● swelling on side of face ● toothaches, headaches, dizziness, hearing issues, shoulder pain, ringing in the ear Diagnosis of TMJD may be difficult, and your dentist might use x-rays, MRI, or CT scans. A patient with TMJ disorder might initially report troubles that a dentist won’t visually notice. They

may also report their symptoms to other medical professionals, so that their dentist often gets involved in treatment or diagnosis only later in the game. Treatment of TMJD is often done in consultation by dentists and other doctors. Depending on the specific diagnosis, many possible treatment options may be effective: ● oral surgery ● dental work or splints or bite guards may assist in improving alignment of teeth or preventing nighttime teeth grinding ● orthodontic work or adjustment ● NSAID (anti-inflammatory drugs) may be used to counter inflammation and or swelling and pain in addition to hot or cold packs ● patients may need to eat softer foods ● massage and physical therapy may help ease pain and stress If you or somebody you know is suffering from symptoms related to TMJ, it’s best you speak with your dental professional about the issues. for your body to assimilate by enhancing the absorption, you also get the effects of turmeric longer because the fats in coconut oil slow absorption of it into your body. You basically get turmeric 2.0 with this paste. It can be used internally, topically and even with your pets as well. The recipe is simple, just follow the directions below:

As you can see, there is quite a range of health benefits and value of turmeric. It can help and support anything from joint pain, to blood sugar levels, cancer, memory and brain function, infections, digestion and more. It’s an incredible spice with so many medicinal values and it makes sense that it’s used in many forms of medicine. Turmeric paste is a form of turmeric (paired with other plants) that creates a bio-available paste that will be better absorbed into your body. This paste does a few things. Beyond making the paste easier

The instructions below are easy to follow, and the paste can be made in the next 30 minutes or less and you can always have it on hand for you or your pets, especially for dogs. This remedy is simple, quick and easy to use! The black pepper helps to increase the absorption of turmeric so that your body fully absorbs the nutritional compounds such as curcumin in turmeric and benefits from them. The coconut oil contains an array of healthy fats that delays the absorption (as well as increases it) so that you get the effects longer than you normally would by just ingesting turmeric by itself. You can take 1 tsp of this turmeric paste per day and see how it helps you with any of the listed conditions. DEREK HENRY via HEALTHY WILD AND FREE http://healingthebody.ca/author/derek/

book “The Hidden Messages in Water.” (http://free-ebooksdownloadhelper.blogspot.ca/2014/02/the-hidden-messages-in-water-by-masaru.html.) Dr. Masaru illustrates how thought, words and action could change the molecular structure of ice water. Positive thoughts, words and actions made the molecular structure look very beautiful, just like a snowflake. While negative thought and words made it look like it has no structure and does not make up any kind of visible form.

The Power of Thought and Words on The

Body

Did you know the average adult human body is made up of about 50-65% water, averaging around 57-60% and for infants it is much higher, typically around 75-78% water, then dropping to 65% by one year of age? The Total Body Water is the total amount of fluid the body expressed as a percentage of total weight. Water is an essential part of staying healthy and over half the body consists of water. It regulates body temperature and helps eliminate waste. Did you also know that thoughts and words can influence the water’s molecular structure? This famous discovery was simplified by Japanese scientist Dr. Emoto Masaru in his bestselling

If ice water can change, so too can the water in our bodies. With this in mind, what are your thoughts, words and action today and every day? Are you using positive thoughts, words, and action towards yourself and others? What are negative thoughts, words and actions really doing to our health? Constant negativity is how our physical, mental and spiritual self becomes unbalanced; we get sick, our bodies vulnerable to infections or disease. The body, mind and soul start to shut down as the molecular structure of our body’s water lose structure and form. There are many things you can do to shift into a more positive worldview. 4 QUOTES ABOUT

STRESS That Can Actually Help You Manage Better.

We have all been there, and we will be there again, because it’s just how life is. Times of stress happen to all of us. These 4 quotes may not be able to fix the cause of our stress, but perhaps they will help us to remember how to manage our stress while we are in the midst of it.

1. We can easily manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday’s burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it. –John Newton Join us for an informative discussion and simple practice. Learn a little of the philosophy and history of yoga, and explore some of the basic breathing and movements of yoga.Open for all abilities.

Avoid being overwhelmed by taking things one step at a time. Knowing where you want to end up is important but keep your eyes on the ground in front of you, one foot in front of the other, until you are able to handle lifting your eyes to the horizon. This allows us to continue to do the things that our daily life requires, and also move our efforts forward without becoming paralyzed by the size of the task.

2. Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person's physical, emotional, and mental states. –Carol Welch

Change your physiology. Stress is often rooted in our mental and emotional states, yet there are significant physical ramifications. We are actually mentally inhibited because our body is assuming we are in danger and need to be in preparedness to fight or flee our enemy. The body is unable to distinguish between the stress of avoiding physical danger and the stress of too much happening at work or home. At least when we are out of physical danger the mind can let the body know that, and the chemicals will cease production. When we are experiencing mental or emotional distress, however, it is much harder to escape from. We are unable to kick out of this physical response until we do something that activates the opposite reaction in our body. Exercise, yoga, meditation, laughter, time spent in nature all have the opposite effect of stress in the body. If you feel stressed every day, then you should be actively engaged every day in an activity that can change the physiological response, even if there is nothing you can do to change the cause of the stress.

3. The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another. –William James

Learning to observe the activities of your mind, while actively not participating with them, is a powerful tool. When we do this we can see our patterns, our beliefs, our insecurities and fears. We can recognize the undeniable link from thoughts to feelings

to physical manifestations. If you don’t know how to start this process, there are many ways to learn – taking a meditation or yoga class, working with a psychologist trained in cognitive behavioural techniques, asking a trusted friend to talk you through a problem and help you to see your repeating patterns. There are tools once you begin, as well – goal setting or vision boards to give you a positive place to aim for; mantras or affirmations to retrain our mind (the brain acts like a muscle – repetition is how it learns); read books and be around people that reinforce your efforts. It may feel daunting, but the efforts of wresting your mind into your conscious control will decrease the battering you take from within.

Ask for support. When we feel isolated in our experience, we become prone to depression and anxiety – a vicious cycle of stress symptoms can take hold. When we try to remain a lone island, we risk remaining in a place of fear. But when we reach out to a support system (be that family, friends, counselling, co-workers, leaders) and share our experience we create the opportunity for connection on a mental and emotional level, and the physical body responds with relief as well. We open the door for assistance and that assistance (be it the relief that comes from the simple act of sharing your worries or in a tangible action that person can do to aid you) will bring with it a lessening of the burden.

Sometimes, I just want someone to say, "I know you're stressed. It's going to be OK. Here's a scotch and $5 million

Stress comes in fluctuating waves. Some days are an easy breeze. Other times we feel buffeted and blown around as if we were in the midst of a great storm. Or buried by the weight of it all. So one last quote to reinforce those above and bring comfort if you need it:

“ When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure.” – Peter Marshall

This is a new one for me for when I think of Thanksgiving I think of Turkey not Pie, well maybe Pumpkin Pie. I was just reading an article about the different Thanksgiving traditions people have from all around the world and was surprized to read that more than a few people eat pie in the morning for Thanksgiving. Now that is a tradition I could sink my teeth into. Truthfully I cannot even remember the last time I even considered making a pie, it is one of those things I never thought myself capable of making because I have found making that light flaky crust pretty much an impossibility. So I have just never attempted it – cake is way easier. Now I find out that there are many, many people out there who would not even think about thanksgiving without their freshly baked pie!! Seriously the stuffing and the turkey and all the other trimmings is just about enough work for me, but who knows the day may come somewhere down the road when I wake up and think to myself “perhaps I will make a pecan pie this morning” who knows it could happen! So as a good cheer to those of you who want to make a beautiful Thanksgiving breakfast pie I thought I would share a few of the most delicious extra-ordinary pie recipes I could find. This first one almost make the whole idea plausible.

Turn oven temperature down to 275-300 degrees F (135-150 degrees C) and bake 40-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Let cool and serve.

Peanut Butter Pie - Decadent

1 cup Creamy Peanut Butter 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 prepared chocolate pie crust 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed and divided 1 (11.75 ounce) jar Smucker's(R) Hot Fudge Microwaveable Ice Cream Topping, divided 2 tablespoons Creamy Peanut Butter Beat together 1 cup peanut butter, cream cheese and sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on medium, until well combined. Gently mix in 3 cups whipped topping until thoroughly combined. Spoon mixture into pie shell. Using a spatula, smooth mixture to edges of pie. Reserve 2 tablespoons of hot fudge topping into the corner of a re-sealable plastic bag. Microwave remaining topping, on HIGH (100% topping), for 1 minute. Stir. Spread topping over pie, covering entire peanut butter layer. Refrigerate until set. Spread remaining whipped topping (1 1/2 cups), over hot fudge layer, being careful not to mix the two layers. Cut a small corner from bag containing topping. Squeeze bag to drizzle topping over pie. Place remaining 2 tablespoons peanut butter in a re-sealable food storage bag; cut bag corner and squeeze to drizzle in opposite direction from topping. Refrigerate until ready to serve. All this time I was afraid of making a pie and new consider just buying the crust silly girl, I guess because my mother always made her own light flaky crust. As it turns out I just may be making myself a Thanksgiving pie for breakfast this year!! I always like to try something new – so should you. Kathryn Hartwell

You Never Know What You’re Going to Get I first saw Ryan Alim – front man for local rock act Blind Box – perform this past summer, at Legends in Strathmore.

It was an acoustic night, and Ryan just happened to be at the pub, enjoying a drink, when a number of patrons cajoled him into taking the stage. As he reluctantly agreed and made his way up to the front, the crowd erupted in cheers – they’d seen him sing before, and knew what to expect. I, on the other hand, wasn’t quite sure what was in store. After adjusting the mic stand down to suit his shorter frame, Alim – accompanied by nothing but an acoustic guitar – belted out one of the most amazing covers of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” that I’ve ever heard, and completely brought the house down. He only sang one other tune after that, before quickly and shyly bowing his thanks and stepping off the stage to cheers and applause. Don’t ever judge a book by its cover: the small-statured Alim packs one of the biggest voices I’ve ever heard, recorded or live. Getting the chance to sit down with him almost a month later, Alim gave me some history on Blind Box, and how the band came to be. Moving to Canada from the Philippines in 1998 during his late teens, Alim’s childhood was often tough, and occasionally downright tragic. The youngest in a large family by 10 years, Alim lost his mother to cancer when he was only 9. By the time he was 15, Alim’s next-nearest sibling was 25, and he was pretty much left to his own devices. It was then that he met Harold, a close friend and partner-in-crime who saw in Alim the potential for great things. Together, the two of them pushed each other to embrace their creative artistry, with Harold encouraging Alim to work on

his drawing, practice tattooing – starting out with a homemade tattoo gun on his own thumb! – and play music. Sadly, Harold struggled with circulatory issues his whole life, and passed away in 2006, before he was able to join Alim in Canada. However, he had made a deep mark on Alim’s life, who honours his memory today by embracing Harold’s encouragement to follow his passion and pursue music. Enter Blind Box: a ragtag group of musicians with an uncharacteristic look and talent for days. Why Blind Box? “Because you never what you’re going to get” quips Alim when asked, and it’s true, considering they play a huge range of music varying from heavy metal to rock n’ roll to pretty much anything else you could think of. The band’s lineup has changed a few times, but the current iteration features Alim on vocals; Eric Mendoza – a friend of Alim’s from the Philippines – on guitar; Christian Dallaire – a straight-laced office worker – on drums; and “The Rev” Mike Kruse – who looks as metal as his name implies – on bass. When they all get up on stage, you’re not quite sure what’s going to happen next – but, that might just be the point.

Catch their show on Oct 14 at Legends Restaurant & Lounge in Strathmore, and get ready to expect the unexpected with Written by Kyle Penn

The Most Relaxing Art Class You’ll Ever Take

It began as a quest for a creative, relaxing way to enjoy an evening out. Then,

last fall, a leaflet at Hope Bridges studio caught my eye. It featured the art of ‘Zentangle’ and the best part – it claimed to be a relaxing way to spend an evening. The artwork in the leaflet looked intricate and complex, resembling extreme doodling. My first thought was, ‘this is the type of art only done by the super artistic!’ My second thought was, ‘this would take me years!’ Yet they promised that anyone could do it – I was so skeptical that I signed up! The facilitator was a certified Zentangle instructor and the workshop was beginner level, what could go wrong? At the very least I’d meet a few new people sharing a common skepticism in our extreme doodling abilities, and at best I’d find new friendships through our shared interest in this new art form, people as hopeful about their potential as I was. We all secretly hoped that the teacher was brave! Well, the teacher was not without hope, she promised that each of us would leave the workshop with a beautiful piece of art and she was quite confident in her promise! She showed us how to create and repeat each pattern step by step while watching a beautiful design unfold. Each person in the group ended up with a very cool looking piece, and when we looked at our collective

artwork, we were intrigued that although we all used identical materials and learned the techniques together, each piece was unique! It was confirmed – everyone at the table actually did share a small twinge of doubt in their artistic flair, but after spending the evening together, we were easily convinced to take the workshops to follow. A little about Zentangle The patterns of Zentangle are easy to learn and while creating them, a person begins to unwind from the stresses of the day. Nearly anyone can learn to do it, and even individuals that live with conditions of the muscles or joints can feel relaxed. Each pattern can become a starting point or launch-pad for the imagination and artists soon start creating their own patterns. Participants in their first class usually discover that they’re more creative than they had imagined! What Zentangle feels like In the first workshop, the facilitator stresses that as we begin a piece, not to have a preconceived idea of an end result. Just refer back to the design cards from the workshop, relax and draw. With our hectic lives, it’s important to take the time to sit down and unwind, the bonus is making something beautiful while doing so! Personally, looking at a blank page no longer causes feelings of anxiety or my palms to grow cold. I apply what I’ve learned and as I relax and draw, my inner artist emerges. I now look forward to reconnecting, and even meeting some new Zentangle enthusiasts in the coming months. By the end of an evening of extreme doodling we’re sure to have a collection of beautiful and unique pieces of art. Pat Timmermans

Like a proud peacock, the Oilers will show off their beautiful new plumage called Rogers Place on October 12 and then the Battle of Alberta hits the Scotiabank Saddledome on October 14.

1. Will the Flames be better than the Oilers this season? The Flames finished 7 points better than the Oilers last season and had 4 more wins but nobody in Calgary was gloating. The 2015 - 2016 season was a disaster for both Alberta teams with the Flames finishing 26th overall and Edmonton 29th. The Flames have made significant upgrades to their goaltending, while the Oilers addressed their defensive liabilities trading Taylor Hall to New Jersey for Adam Larsson. Both teams will be better but is there room for both to return to the post season? Highly unlikely. The team that wins the season series will have the upper hand.

2. Is Glen Gulutzan a better coach than Bob Hartley? As far as I am concerned, this was the most baffling move of the off season. One year removed from winning the Jack Adams trophy as the coach of the year, Hartley was shown the door early in May. "Bob did some very good things here," said Flames General Manager Brad Treliving at the time of the firing. "The decision was not based solely on the season. I just felt at this particular time, it's time to move forward. Bob has taken this team as far as I feel he can take it." Naturally, the rumours started to fly that the players didn't like

26 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Hartley's harsh style and it rubbed certain players the wrong way. The poor million dollar babies didn't like to be criticized. The Flames needed a softer, gentler touch. You know, like Charmin toilet paper. On June 17, the Flames introduced the very likeable Glen Gulutzan, who promised to bring a new style and a new energy to the team. “I’m not Bob. I’m a different guy. I’m a different voice. I’m a different personality. I’m a different kind of coach," says Gulutzan. "But some of the foundations that he built are universal, and I’m not going to tear those down. But we’re going to change things, and make it the way we want to play.” Personally, I like Gulutzan, but I liked Hartley too. Time will tell if this was a step forward, a step back or maybe just a lateral move.

3. Have the Flames solved their goaltending woes? The most exciting move in the off season came at the NHL draft in Buffalo. The Flames acquired goaltender Brain Elliot from the St. Louis Blues for a 2nd round pick (35th overall) and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2018. The 31 year old is entering the final year of his contract at a modest 2.5 million dollars. More importantly, Elliot was coming off a season with a league best .930 save percentage and fantastic 23 - 8 - 6 record with 4 shutouts. Finally a solution to the erratic goaltending trio of Jonas Hiller, Kari Ramo and Joni Ortio. Flames GM Brad Treliving was not done and signed free agent Chad Johnson to a cap friendly one year deal worth 1.7 million dollar deal. Johnson played a career high 45 games last season with Buffalo Sabres, posting a .920 save percentage and a very respectable 22 - 16 - 1 record on a very average team. "Goaltending was a huge issue in Calgary last season," says former Flames GM Craig Button. "They have made significant upgrades and this will put them back in the playoff picture in the Western Conference." The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

4. Can Johnny Gaudreau produce on the road? We all know Johnny Hockey is a dynamic NHL player. He's the type of player that brings you out of your seat at the Saddledome. He was the Flames leader in all the important categories. Goals, assists, points, shots, game winning goals and jersey sales. Yes, he is a fan favourite! While his defensive zone play will always be criticized, coaches certainly don't want to stifle his offensive creativity. However, if Gaudreau it truly going to become one of the elite forwards in the league he is going to have to start producing on the road. Gaudreau scored 78 points last season, including a league high 56 at home. You can do the math; that means he only racked up 22 points on the road when the match ups aren't as favourable.

5. Did the Flames overpay for Troy Brouwer? The 31 year old winger hit a home run during free agency signing a 4 year, 18 million dollar contract. Too much money, in my opinion, for a guy who scored 39 points last season. The signing also cost them Calgary product Joe Colbourne who signed a 2 year, 5 million dollar deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Is Brouwer really that much better than Colborne? The obvious answer is no, but I do understand the intangibles that Brouwer brings to the table. He will be expected to play top 6 minutes for the Flames this season, bring leadership to the room, kill penalties and take on additional d-zone responsibilities. The Flames gave a similar deal to Michael Frolik two years ago and while Frolik is a good player, he is not a great bang for the buck. I do have to put a little disclaimer on this article as I writing this as training camp is just getting underway. The Gaudreau situation was still up in the air and one of the biggest questions will the health of the Flames important pieces. During last year's preseason, Flames defenseman TJ Brodie broke a bone in his hand and it kept him out of the lineup for nearly a month. The Flames stumbled out of gate and they never did recovery. The Flames will need a great start to the 2016 - 2017 season and back to wins against the Edmonton Oilers would go a long ways to an exciting, successful season.

Warning: Chronic Post-It-Note User Plays well with others

venture now - individuals that have the ability to make we want to commit some small felony or another. They have the ability to exceed my quota of warm and fuzzies. Yep, I am a yellow tag wearing, and proud of it, person. Most of the time I like everyone but it might take a bit for me to fully jump on board the friendship train. And sometimes there are those few people that no matter what, I’d rather shove under the train then travel aboard their light rail transit of insanity. I also know some red taggers. How dare you take the time to ask how their day is going? They will figuratively bite your head off. No matter what you do, it isn’t good enough, fast enough, big enough, small enough, JUST ENOUGH. In university, nothing could cause me more anxiety than a dreaded group project. I actually paid my chemistry lab partner to not show up to labs because his approach to one of our first “group projects” resulted in first degree burns and the need to buy eyebrow pencils in bulk. Really people should come with labels. Caution – does not use caution! Be aware, intense need to micro manage! Do not approach – likes to hug, and (shudder) touch people’s hair! (That causes me nightmares, by the way). Continued exposure may result in need for medication! You get the idea. But alas, my boss tells me I can’t go around slapping labels on my coworkers anymore. So what is a girl to do? Break out the personality indicator tests. You may have heard of some of them such as Myers-Briggs, Holland Code, Enneagram Tests, or True Colours. Each of these “tests” has you indicate how you would react in a situation or which statement is truer of you. For example, after a long day at work are you more likely to, a) stay at home with a good book, b) go to the local pub with a group of friends? I find that these assessments when taken honestly are pretty darn accurate. They are a great tool for helping you figure out what your learning style is, what careers you may excel at and even what type of work environment would suit you best. The fun comes in when all of your coworkers do the assessment too. That’s when you get those ah-ha moments that cause you to understand why your to-do-lists drive your co-worker crazy and why his inability to be on time drives you wacky. By understanding each other’s personality traits, you can figure out how to coexist and collaborate better. My coworkers now understand my chronic need for post-it-notes and I know to bring an extra pen or two for the guy that always forgets to bring one to the meeting that will be starting ten minutes late because that’s just how it works on his train. If you and your coworkers are interested in learning more about each other and how to build a stronger team, feel free to give me a shout at the office. I’d be happy to walk around slapping caution stickers on you all.

Ever have one of those days where you should wear a warning label that says “does not play well with others?” At the ani-

mal shelter where I volunteer, all new dogs undergo an assessment as to how well they play with others – both canine and human others. The gentle and affectionate “rub my tummy and I will devote my entire life to making you happy” dogs get a green tag. The “I like the looks of you, you can walk me, but that guy over there, I’m going to crap on his shoe while I walk past” dogs get a yellow tag. Red tags are reserved for the pups that don’t play well with others. You go to give them a treat and they give you their fangs. Another dog happens to glance in their direction and hackles raise and growling commences. (A surprising number of Chihuahuas fall into this group.) I really wish humans came with the same labeling system. Seems to me that any time people gather in groups larger than one, conflict can occur. I know green label people. The perpetually happy, always going out of their way to please everyone, brings baking into the office every week, cheerleaders of the world. These are the glass is always half full – hey I got laid off, I can start a wonderful new ad-

Putting Albertans First Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! As I am writing this article, I am as always shocked by what our Provincial Government has in store for us. I found it interesting that our Premier was in New York selling the Government’s Climate Action Plan internationally when here on the ground in Alberta, the Premier is having trouble selling this idea to the people it will affect as of January 1, 2017. Then again, Albertans are forced to pay it so perhaps she feels a foreign audience would be friendlier. The Premier managed to evade all questions surrounding the potential Federal Carbon Tax, and provincially she would not answer questions regarding the 12 billion dollars plus that could be spent between stranded assets and accelerated phase-out from coal to some undefined renewable program. The Government will have to subsidize this transition using Albertans’ tax dollars. The Government owes us an honest explanation. Will Albertans be forced to choose between heat and food? Between property taxes and food? Between heat and school supplies? You get the picture. The Carbon tax is a tax on everything paid by everybody. The charities and organizations that have been created to help people during times of need are going to be paying increased taxes as they are not exempt. Schools and municipal governments, hospitals and ambulances are not exempted either. Does the Government not realize that these are not just abstract numbers? These are real people who are affected! The Provincial Government believes that they can bring investment into the Province due to “social license” of this Climate Action Plan, but yet does nothing to address loss of jobs and our drowning economy. We are the most stringently regulated and environmentally sensitive petroleum producing jurisdiction in the world. How is this carbon tax bending behaviour? Our Provincial Minister for Economic Trade and Development has on your behalf created a task force to recommend where to spend your carbon tax dollars. He did not specify how much of those tax dollars are dedicated to renewable and green technology. This advisory group is going to outline and tell us how to invest your tax dollars, some towards innovation, and then some to explain as to whether or not the plan is succeeding. The study is not intended to be public. We will keep a close eye on this advisory group. It seems like the Government, instead of creating an economically attractive environment for innovation and technology for investment and talent to come forward by those interested in investing in these technologies, has instead deemed that it is their responsibility to in-

vest your dollars into these experiments. We believe that there is always room for improvement especially when we are talking about our earth, air and water and of course we want to excel in protecting them. I have a hard time believing that any Albertan would want anything different for themselves and their families. Clean air, water and earth is the right of all human beings and I find it appalling that our Government, instead of sharing Albertans’ pride in our incredible resources and our great track record of responsible development, chooses to demonize one of the pillars of our prosperity. Her handpicked co-chair of her Oil Sands Advisory Group, anti-oil activist Tzeporah Berman, recently stated she didn’t think we needed new pipelines. This fall we will be treated to the spectacle of the Government suing itself and Alberta taxpayers over the Power Purchase Agreements. Perhaps the government should think about Albertans first before they make our industries uncompetitive with their ideology-driven policies. I hope to see many of you out and about in the constituency in the next month. I want your ideas on how we can make things better. I’m proud to say that in the Wildrose we are “Putting Albertans First”. On Tuesday, October 11 Wildrose Leader Brian Jean will be hosting a Town Hall at the Chestermere Regional Recreational Centre MPP room from 6 PM until 9 PM. Meet Brian, myself, and other special guests and give us your input. Admission is FREE but arrive early as space is limited. We’d love to see you there. 3.5” x 2.5” | Maximum Font Size: 30 pt

Return of Parliament

As Parliamentarians return to the House of Commons and Senate this month after the summer recess, I look forward to a very productive fall session working for the people of Bow River. Kids have returned to school and their regular routines as they get back into groove of their studies. That means that parents are also getting back into the routines and figuring out the busy hustle and bustle of getting their kids to school, preparing lunches, making sure they have all the school supplies they need, and everything else. School is exciting for students, and it also means that parents are back at helping with extra-curricular activities like sports, music, dance, and other things. The harvest is well under way and our agriculture sector is running full steam ahead. I understand that this is a very good year for our farmers, and I hope that as winter approaches, the next crops will be just as fruitful. The previous federal government placed a big emphasis on opening markets for our farmers, and I think the current government may not have as much of an interest in this issue. The Conservatives will continue to pressure the government

708 Centre St,

to make market access a main plank of their agricultural policy. I look forward to a fruitful fall session of Parliament. There are many issues that we will be facing and holding the Liberals to account is going to be very important. The most important ones for our region, in my opinion, are the state of the economy, natural resources issues with respect to pipelines especially, and finally electoral reform. Electoral reform has been a major issue for many constituents, who are concerned that the government is going to make a decision about how they vote without first asking them if they are satisfied with the current system. That is why the Conservatives have continued to demand a referendum. Polling has consistently said that at least 2/3rds of Canadians want a referendum before the government makes a decision. It is our duty as legislators and as proud Canadians to accept nothing less than what this large majority of our fellow citizens really desire. I will continue to serve proudly as your representative in the House of Commons. I will continue standing for the issues that matter to the working families right across Bow River constituency. Should you need to contact me, my Ottawa office can be reached at 613-992-0761 or martin.shields.gc.ca, or my Brooks office at 403-793-6775/1-844-241-0020 or martin.shields.c1@ parl.gc.ca.

Bee-friendly group energized to spread the word Submitted by City of Chestermere

Last month’s Energizer Night was buzzing in more ways than one! Amongst the large turnout of eager residents signing up for programs in the community, was a group of passionate bee-enthusiasts spreading the word about pollinators in Chestermere. On July 27, 2016, the City of Chestermere was designated as western Canada’s first Bee City and the second City designated in Canada. The Bee City Committee and Chestermere officials hope to engage and educate residents about the declining population of bees and other pollinators in Canada and around the world. They also hope to highlight that Chestermere has more than 70 parks, as well as existing initiatives that support a healthy and sustainable ecosystem, such as Chestermere in Bloom, Community Garden and the Birth Forest. The Bee City application was the result of passionate community members, such as those who represented the Bee City booth at Energizer Night, bringing forward a great idea to make Chestermere even better. The group spoke with residents, handed out education materials and spread the word about Chestermere’s exciting designation. Stay tuned for more bee-friendly community initiatives and opportunities. Yes, indeed I am a Sage and my name is Sergio (of course). After reading my story, you will not just think about me at Christmas or Thanksgiving anymore; you will be using me a lot more and I know that for sure. I have one of the longest histories of use of any culinary or medicinal herb. As a matter of fact, the ancient Egyptians used me as a fertility drug and in the first century, C.E. Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides reported that the aqueous decoction of sage stopped bleeding of wounds and cleaned ulcers and sores. He also recommended sage juice in warm water for hoarseness and coughs. I was used by herbalists internally, and externally to treat sprains, swelling, ulcers and bleeding. I can strengthen your nervous system, improve your memory, and sharpen the senses. I am one little miracle after another. I have been used to treat fevers, as a calming tea to help people get to sleep, for colds, and the list goes on and on. I have a very long history of treating ailments such as memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. In 2003, researchers at Northumbria University in the U.K. found that healthy adults who had taken Spanish sage oil had a higher word recall than the other participants. In-vitro studies have shown that I kill bacteria such as E. coli and stave off fungal infections and I soothe indigestion as an herbal tea. I’m also famous for being a part of the Four Thieves Vinegar - a mix of herbs that was made to prevent the plague. My name means "salvere," or "to be saved" – just imagine that! My oil has been used medicinally for muscle aches, rheumatism, and aromatherapy and I also contain ketones, including A- and B-thujone, which enhance mental clarity and upgrade memory. This knowledge has been extremely useful in treating cognitive decline and patients suffering from Alzheimer's. You are not going to believe this but I have been prized for that purpose for over 1,000 years. In fact, sage, made into a drink from the leaves, has been called the "thinker's tea" and even helps ease depression. A gram of me has vitamin K, with 43% of the daily recommended serving, an excellent source of fibre, vitamin A, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and B vitamins such as folic acid, thiamin, pyridoxine, and riboflavin in much higher doses than the recommended daily requirements, plus thenewsyneighbour.com

healthy amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, thiamin, and copper. Wow–all in my little beautiful green leaves. I am native to countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and have been consumed in these regions for thousands of years. In medicinal lore, I have one of the longest histories of use of any medicinal herb. The Greeks and Romans highly prized my many healing properties, both civilizations used me as a preservative for meat, a tradition that continued until the beginning of refrigeration. What they knew from experience was that I could help to reduce spoilage and science has confirmed it because I am full of numerous terpene antioxidants. I am so legendary that Arab physicians in the 10th century believed that I promoted immortality. Sage tea may even help protect against some forms of cancer, according to a study published in the June 2010 issue of the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry." Sage extract also promoted prompt repair of DNA. The best news of all is that in a study published in a 2009 issue of the journal "Nutrition and Cancer" found that rosmarinic acid, one of the main active constituents in sage tea, promotes early cell death and inhibits growth and reproduction of colon cancer cells. I am even good for your liver function, according to an animal study published in the February 2005 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" - I protect lipids in the liver against damage from a liver toxin. Sage tea may help reduce anxiety and improve your mood, according to a study published in the April 2006 issue of the journal Neuropsychopharmacology; now that is a mouth full! Just a precaution though, sage tea may cause uterine contractions, and you should not use it if you are pregnant. Large doses of sage may cause seizures and dizziness or rapid heartbeat. It also lowers blood sugar levels. Use it only under the supervision of your doctor if you are diabetic. O.K. only one last bit of information and this is important—in 2001, the International Herb Association awarded little old me the title of "Herb of the Year." Listen, I am so easy to grow and I love being inside your home or out in your garden. Add me to your soups, salads, stews and sip on me in your favourite tea cup and have the satisfaction that you are becoming healthier every day with my help. REMEMBER; As with anything new, make sure you do your own investigating; sometimes too much of something is not good. Everything in moderation – I want you all to be safe and healthy.

Drain, reserving 1/2 cup cooking liquid. Meanwhile, melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sage leaves and cook until edges curl and butter is dark amber (do not burn), stirring and turning leaves occasionally, about 6 minutes. Transfer sage to paper towels. Add veal stock to brown butter. Add pasta and 5 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese to brown butter mixture in skillet; toss to coat, adding reserved cooking liquid by tablespoonfuls if dry. Season with salt and pepper. Divide among bowls. Garnish with fried sage leaves and cheese. (From: epicurious.com) Be well my friends and ENJOY! Sergio Special Precautions & Warnings: Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Taking sage during pregnancy is LIKELY UNSAFE because of the possibility of consuming thujone, a chemical found in some sage. Thujone can bring on a woman’s menstrual period, and this could cause a miscarriage. Avoid sage if you are breast-feeding, too. There is some evidence that

thujone might reduce the mother’s milk supply. Diabetes: Sage might lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Watch for signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and monitor your blood sugar carefully if you have diabetes and use sage. The dose of your diabetes medications may need to be adjusted by your healthcare provider. Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Spanish sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia) might have the same effects as the female hormone estrogen. If you have any condition that might be made worse by exposure to estrogen, don’t use Spanish sage. Please always consult your Doctor before trying something new. Kathryn Hartwell

Doreen Bonato is a Mother of 4, including triplets. She has been cooking since the age of 10 when her mother introduced her to the kitchen. She has lived in Chestermere since 1999 and runs a small laundry business. She has cooked for the food trucks around Calgary and continues to enjoy teaching her children to cook and also catered her son’s wedding. Doreen's passion for cooking shows in the many dishes she prepares for family and friends.

This month’s recipe is a great way to inject some healthy ingredients into your child’s system without the battle it normally is! Not many children will eat turmeric willingly, so smoothies are a great vehicle to do so. A blender or bullet are both acceptable in making this smoothie.

What you will need: Blender Frozen or fresh fruit Coconut oil Hemp seeds Ground flax Honey Cinnamon Ginger Turmeric Pepper (helps in the absorption of turmeric) Water Place all ingredients in the blender with the coconut oil in the middle. This will help it not to stick to the blades. Grind a small amount of pepper over the top. Some frozen fruit can be sour so use about 2 tbsp of honey to give it a nice sweetness your child will find appealing. Blend away! Serve with a straw. All these ingredients are superfoods and, combined, will give your child a much-needed boost for the day and help you feel confident you have provided nutrients to your child.

When kids refuse to nap, is that resisting a rest?

Stay calm and blend on!

MOTHER’S ORIGINAL POPCORN BALL RECIPE

In the good old days many, many years ago when

we used to go “Trick or Treating”, many of the treats we received were actually homemade – like I said, the “good old days”. We would get homemade popcorn balls and I remember helping mom make them every single year. We would make at least 150 of them – can you believe that? They were the most popular Halloween treat in the whole neighbourhood and all of the kids used to take them to school for the Halloween party. Boy, you will never see those days again! But you can still make homemade Halloween treats just to share with your friends and family. This gives you just another excuse to eat a few yourself since you only make these once a year, right? That’s my way of looking at it, anyhow! So I am going to share, first and foremost, my mother’s original popcorn ball recipe. It really is quite easy, just a little time consuming.

7 quarts popped popcorn 1 cup sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Place popcorn in a large baking pan; mom would use her gigantic roaster. In a thick heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, water and salt. Cook over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 235° (soft-ball stage). Remove from the heat. Add the butter, vanilla and stir until butter is melted. Immediately pour over popcorn and stir

until evenly coated. When mixture is cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cold water to prevent sticking. This will make about 20 balls. Your hands will get red and your arms will get sore but when you take that first bite of your own homemade popcorn balls, you might not want to wait until Halloween every year to make these – they are incredibly delicious. Now our neighbour down the street, not to be outdone, used to make her famous “Caramel Covered Apples,” which were not quite as good for you as the popcorn balls, hehe! But some found them almost as delectable.

CARAMEL COVERED APPLES 12 crisp apples 1⅓ cup dark corn syrup 1⅓ cup granulated sugar 1⅓ cup light brown sugar 1⅓ cup heavy cream ¼ tsp salt 3 tbsp butter

¾ tsp vanilla extract Line a baking pan with a generously oiled sheet of parchment paper. Push a candy apple stick into the core of each apple. Combine the syrup, sugars, heavy cream, and salt in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Simmer until the mixture reaches 270°F – about 15 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the butter and vanilla. Let cool for 6 to 8 minutes, until caramel thickens to a toffee-like consistency. Dip and gently swirl the apples into the caramel and place on the prepared baking sheet. Let cool completely.

Enjoy your Halloween and be safe out there!! Kathryn Hartwell

MISO PASTE

Strathmore Jewellery Boutique

One of my favourite parts of going to a Japanese restaurant, besides the sushi, is starting my meal with a nice hot bowl of miso soup. I happened to be in the grocery store the other day and noticed a nice big container of miso paste and was overjoyed, but after buying the largest container available, I soon learned that most recipes call for a couple tablespoons, at most. I had more miso than I knew what to do with, but I refused to let it get lost in the depths of the refrigerator. Instead, I went on a mission to find ways (both obvious and totally unexpected) to incorporate miso paste into everyday meals.

Perhaps you've made compound butter using fresh herbs, or even summer berries, but have you ever tried miso compound butter? This savory-salty mix adds depth of flavor, and makes a nice topping on everything from meat and fish to vegetables.

5. Pan Sauce

A simple pan sauce has a wonderful way of making homecooked meat feel restaurant-worthy, while being amazingly easy to make. Add even richer flavor to your next pan sauce by whisking in a small spoonful of miso paste.

4. Miso Butter

Miso is actually made from soy beans. Soy miso is a very good source of manganese and copper as well as a good source of zinc (all three are important mineral antioxidants). It is also a very good source of the mineral phosphorus, as well as a good source of protein and dietary fibre. In addition to these conventional nutrients, soy miso is also an important source of phytonutrient antioxidants including phenolic acids like ferulic, coumaric, syringic, vanillic, and kojic acid. ATTENTION: HOME BUILDERS WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A NEW HOME BUILDER?

A builder is defined as a person who undertakes the performance of all the work and supply of all the material necessary to construct a completed home, whether for the purpose of sale by the person or under a contract with a vendor or owner. But it is so much more than that; a new home builder is fulfilling a purchaser’s lifelong dream – to own their own home. Whether it is their first or fourth home, purchasing a new home is the biggest purchase of a lifetime. There are many decisions to make before you purchase your new home, like design, changes, which lot to choose, and perhaps the biggest decision: where are you going to live?

WHAT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY?

Many new home buyers are looking for a community as well as a home—a friendly place to live, a good environment for raising a family or enjoying one’s retirement years. The word “community” may conjure up images of white picket fences, gingerbread porches, children’s tricycles and small town atmosphere. Or, you may have visions of an active adult lifestyle with nature trails, bike paths and sports facilities. It is important to have realistic expectations and to know what a particular community offers before you buy into it. As you visit builders’ sales offices and model homes, ask about the community at the same time. Today’s builders and developers strive to build enjoyable and healthy environments for all age groups. Common facilities like parks and community centers provide a central area where people can meet, socialize and get involved. Find out about cost for use, if any, and how the facilities and common areas will be maintained once the development is completed.

PICKING THE PERFECT NEW HOME BUILDER

We have had “New Home Builders” advertising in the magazine for years now and many of them have been with us from

This section is for YOU the beginning; this tells me a lot about these builders. First, they are very smart to advertise in “The Newsy” and secondly, this also shows me that these builders have been in business for many years, which also tells me they have strong reputations, integrity and build amazing homes. They have the vision to change and adapt with the ever-changing real estate market. I would never be afraid to recommend any of these builders to you and they all offer diverse and well planned communities, all in different areas, giving a wide range of options.

BUILDERS:

The Newsy Neighbour is fortunate enough to have so many construction and trades companies supporting our magazine, and we want to make sure that the home builders who are building magnifcent homes in our COMMUNITIES are aware of them!

is dwindling? It might be time to up your real estate marketing game. Peruse the following collection of business building ideas to see which ones you can use to increase your real estate commissions this year:

Newsletter

Use newsletter tools like Revue (getrevue.co) to create lists of links relevant to your clients. Offer a weekly newsletter featuring the latest happenings in the local real estate market, design trends, or any topic of interest to your target audience. The more relevant your newsletter, the more clients will come to trust you as their preferred real estate agent. Make your newsletter so good they'll share it with their friends and you might get more referrals too.

Referral Appreciation Gifts

Speaking of referrals, thank you gifts are a great way to build your business. Offer inexpensive but useful gifts bearing your website URL. Think helpful household items like barbecue tongs emblazoned with your web address. Your clients will appreciate you taking the time to thank them for referring a buyer/seller and will have a constant reminder of your graciousness to show off to their friends.

Art Showing

An excellent way to build attendance and word-of-mouth advertising is to display the work of local artists at your

open houses. Ask your sellers if it is okay to showcase one or two pieces of art in their homes and attach the artist's business card to each artwork item. The artist will mention their showing to their social network, sending more potential buyers your way.

Charitable Fundraiser If you're not big on spotlighting local artists, consider holding a charitable fundraiser at some of your open houses. Pick a charity relevant to your seller and donate proceeds gathered from open house visitors. You can collect donations by raffling off an item or by collecting donations as guests enter your show home (be sure you have someone guarding donations). These are just a few ways real estate agents can market their services and increase their network of potential clients. The more creative you are in your approach, the more you will stand out from other real estate agents. Will you be trying any of these real estate marketing tips to grow your business?

30 Years Serving Southern Alberta Some Marketing Advice From The Newsy Neighbour

The Essentials for Building Your Brand on Social Media You can offer the best product or service on the market, but if no one knows who you are, it will do you little good. When exploited correctly, social media has the capacity to help you gain subscribers, sell your products, promote your services, engage readers and more. The most effective way to improve your capacity to do any of these things is by increasing the authority of your brand, and one of the best ways to accomplish this is through exploiting the reach and connectivity of social media.

According to a recent report by Econsultancy, more than 71 percent of brands have plans to invest more heavily in developing social media marketing campaigns. While there are multitudinous ways to engage the opportunity to market your brand on social media, there are some essentials that must be effectively engaged in order to see the best results.

Choose Networks that Support Your Brand Image An article published by Convince and Convert reveals that 22 percent of people use one or more social media platforms, multiple times throughout the day -- making it one of the most effective mediums through which to establish and build your brand. While Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are some of the more well-known social media platforms, there are literally hundreds of others. The problem is that most of these lesser known platforms are not worth investing your time and energy. The top social media platforms have some unique elements

42 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

that separate them from the others. When considering which platforms will work best in building your brand, you should consider these unique elements. • Facebook is the social media leader in building brand awareness, primarily due to the fact that nearly 75 percent of all Canadians use the platform with some regularity. Facebook provides the capacity to promote almost any brand, because of its heterogeneous user base. • Instagram is a powerful influence for brands that are heavily focused on images, such as clothing companies and retailers. It has also proven to be very effective in reaching the young adult market, African-Americans and Hispanics. • While Google+ has fallen short of its initial projections, it still remains one of the best ways to reach men in the technology field. With 66 percent of the network's users being male, male-centered marketing should fare well on this platform. • LinkedIn is a great platform if you are looking to launch a business-to-business model.

Provide Relevant Content that is Shareable Without quality content that your target audience will find useful, you are just spinning your wheels. Because the reputation of your brand is so important, the creation of quality content that is valuable and shareable has to be a primary goal. One common mistake that you do not want to make is to crank out useless content, solely for the purpose of meeting some publishing calendar. Every piece of content that you share on social media should support your brand image and your brand message -- consistency is paramount. Avoid click bait strategies that are solely meant to get your followers to follow links. You want every point of engagement with your followers to be informative, helpful and valuable. One of the quickest ways to lose the trust and respect of your follows is with poor, irrelevant content. You should seriously consider enhancing your textual content with relevant imagery. Take the time to study others in your industry in order to determine what has been working for them, and then create your own better versions of what they have been successful with. Don't recreate the wheel, attempting to launch content on topics that have not been proven. Find a topic that is producing results, and then create a stronger piece on the same topic.

Leverage Influencers While publishing relevant content is important, if you have a brand that has not developed its own strength, it is possible that your message is getting lost in all of the noise. You will eventually be able to build your own audience, but in the meantime, you will need to effectively leverage audiences that existing influencers in your industry have already built. Some ways that you can leverage existing audiences, is by mentioning the names of the influencer while posting your content. Many influencers will have content alerts that notify them when their names are mentioned in the content of others. Make sure to tag any influencers that you have mentioned in your posts.

A CEO throwing a party takes his executives on a tour of his opulent mansion. In the back of the property, the CEO has the largest swimming pool any of them has ever seen. The huge pool, however, is filled with hungry alligators. The CEO says to his executives "I think an executive should be measured by courage. Courage is what made me CEO. So this is my challenge to each of you: if anyone has enough courage to dive into the pool, swim through those alligators, and make it to the other side, I will give that person anything they desire. My job, my money, my house, anything!" Everyone laughs at the outrageous offer and proceeds to follow the CEO on the tour of the estate. Suddenly, they hear a loud splash. Everyone turns around and sees the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) in the pool, swimming for his life. He dodges the alligators left and right and makes it to the edge of the pool with seconds to spare. He pulls himself out just as a huge alligator snaps at his shoes. The flabbergasted CEO approaches the CFO and says, "You are amazing. I've never seen anything like it in my life. You are brave beyond measure and anything I own is yours. Tell me what I can do for you. The CFO, panting for breath, looks up and says, "You can tell me who the hell pushed me in the pool!"

Questions to Ponder

• Does a clean house indicate that there is a broken computer in it? • Why is it that no matter what colour of bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white? • Is there ever a day when mattresses are NOT on sale? • Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with the hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? • On electric toasters, why do they engrave the message 'one slice'? How many pieces of bread do they think people are really gonna try to stuff in that slot? • Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give their vacuum one more chance?

Light energy moves at different frequencies, but the human eye is only capable of perceiving light in a frequency range of about 400nm-700nm (from red to violet). However, there are other animal species that are capable of perceiving even more frequencies and colours (for example, many birds and insects can see ultraviolet light, which is of a higher frequency than we can perceive). Regardless of the range of colour and frequency vibration that we are able to see, the ability to perceive different colours simply means that we have an innate ability to easily detect the vibration that we need and want. Once you understand the basics, you can easily decide what clothes to wear, what colour car to buy, or what colour to paint your room. Depending on what you are trying to achieve in life, you can surround yourself with the colour that best represents your reality the way you want. Here are a few examples of how to use colour effectively: 1. Want to give a great presentation, speech or sales pitch? Wear a blue shirt, suit or dress to communicate more effectively. 2. Do you have to be around toxic people for some reason today? Wear black to protect yourself from absorbing their energy. 3. Want to cheer up a sick or sad friend? Wear green or pink to bring the presence of unconditional love to your friend. 4. Trying to ramp up your sex life? Wear orange. 5. Want to remember your dreams at night or lucid dream?

Wear indigo or violet pajamas, or purchase bedding in these colours. 6. Need a boost of confidence? Wear yellow. 7. When meditating: Imagine white light. 8. What colour to paint the baby’s room? I recommend green or pink to envelop your new child in love. 9. Are you depressed? People tend to select colours like black, red, brown or gray when they are down, but it is advisable to resist this urge and pick higher vibrational colours to lift your spirits like indigo, yellow or pink. We all have our favourite colours and mine is green – It has always been green for as long as I can remember. We all have a favourite colour and it seems all colours have a different meaning. What is your favourite colour (you have one)? To discover your personality colour, ask yourself: what is my favourite colour? Answer this question now before reading any further. Don't think about it, be spontaneous with your answer; accept the first colour that comes into your mind and don't analyze your choice. It is this instinctual choice of a colour that tells you a lot about yourself, how you function and how others see you. It is the means to understanding your behaviour and your character traits as well as your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual states. It reflects the way you operate in the world, your strengths and weaknesses, your vulnerabilities, your deepest needs and your challenges at that time in your life.

Classes Start October 13, 2016 Call to Register

History: Chloe is a 10 year, 9 month old, spayed female Bichon Frise Mix dog that presented to the Animal Care Centre on August 13th, 2016 because her owners were concerned about her urination.

Initial Examination and Diagnosis:

With Certified Dog Trainer,

Cat Harbord Dip

from ImPAWsible Possible.

403.901.1800 clinic & emergency | info@animalcarecentre.ca | animalcarecentre.ca We are located north of the Trans Canada Hwy on RR 254, 2 km West of Strathmore.

ALSO: Ask about our new “Share the Care” Referral Program!

In the days leading up to Chloe’s first visit to the Animal Care Centre, her family noticed that she was urinating more frequently than normal, and had started to have blood in her urine (hematuria). She was otherwise bright an alert, and eating and drinking normally. Her physical examination was relatively unremarkable (her temperature, heart rate and respiration rate were all normal). The attending veterinarian decided to run a urinalysis to check for bacteria and white blood cells in Chloe’s urine and an X-ray of her abdomen to look at her bladder. Using an ultrasound probe on her abdomen to identify her bladder, a sterile needle was gently guided into her bladder to collect a representative sample of urine. Using the in-house laboratory equipment, the urine was assessed and Chloe was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. X-rays (radiographs) are not always taken when a pet has a urinary tract infection; however in this case, the attending doctor was concerned about the possibility of bladder stones (urolithiasis), which can also lead to blood in urine. Struvite stones are the most common type of bladder stone in dogs, are almost always 'radiodense', meaning that they can be seen on X-rays. Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frisé are the dog breeds most commonly diagnosed with bladder stones. Chloe’s radiograph is shown here. The red circle denotes a radiodense structure that is suspicious of a bladder stone. There are three primary treatment strategies for struvite bladder stones: 1) feeding a special diet to dissolve the stone(s), 2) non-surgical removal by urohydropropulsion and 3) surgical removal. Treatment for stones is important because they can predispose to future UTIs and even urethral obstruction (blockage so the pet cannot urinate). In Chloe’s case, the location of the suspected stone (high in the bladder adjacent to the colon) is somewhat unusual. When a patient is lying on their side to take an X-ray, the stones usually roll down to the lowest portion of the bladder.

Treatment: Chloe’s UTI was treated with 10 days of oral antibiotics, and repeat X-rays were booked 14 days later to reassess for any changes in the suspected bladder stone. When Chloe came in 2 weeks after her initial visit, the clinical signs of her UTI had

48 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

resolved, but the object remained in the same place (see second X-ray). At that time, it was determined that surgical removal of the suspected stone was necessary. But alas, when the surgeon opened her bladder, no stones were identified! Based on the location of the object on X-rays, the veterinarian decided to explore the abdomen further to see if the object could be located. When the bladder was moved out of the way to expose the colon, 5 congealed, calcified lumps were identified in an accumulation of abdominal fat in the exact location denoted on X-rays! These objects were identified as Bates Bodies, which are benign, nodular areas of fat necrosis (dead fat cells). They appear on X-rays as mineralized soft tissue masses that can commonly be confused as tumors, foreign bodies or stones depending on their location. Bates bodies do not require removal, but in Chloe’s case, surgery was necessary to rule out a bladder stone and confirm the object seen on X-ray was nothing to be worried about! Chloe remained in hospital overnight for observation to make sure she was urinating normally. She was sent home the following day on a Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication to help with pain and inflammation as well as a further week of antibiotics. She is doing very well at home since surgery and her family is happy to know that she is free of troublesome bladder stones. They continue to feed her Royal Canin Urinary SO food in order to reduce the risk of developing struvite bladder stones in the future. Dr. Kate Mueller The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

DIY Project: Renovate Your Life

“Just like a coat of paint can completely change the look & feel of a room, a new perspective can completely change the look & feel of your life.” ~ Darlis Collinge I am pretty sure that a love for home improvement and Do-itYourself projects is genetic. My dad was a contractor and my mom, well she is an unstoppable Jill-of-All-Trades with the power tools (and over 100 screwdrivers!!) to prove it. She turns 70 this year and spent the summer renovating a shed behind our cabin to turn it into a guest house. I have the DIY bug and so does my daughter. While I have three grown sons, it always seems to be her and me working on projects like painting, laying flooring, putting in new vanities and installing shelving. We are always willing to try something new and are open to advice from those who have experience in areas that we do not. Yup, it seems that some people just are naturally drawn to take action and improve their home. It’s the same with life. Some people are just naturally drawn to take action and improve themselves. I happen to be one of those people and I absolutely love courses, classes and stimulating conversation that help me grow as a person. Every time I have a new “A HA”, it’s like a renovation in my life… out with the old and in with a new updated thought, attitude, perspective or piece of knowledge. Home renovation and life renovation are similar in other ways too. Let me use one of my first DIY projects from several years ago to explain. The plan was to simply take a day to remove the carpet in the bathroom and replace it with tile. And so I began and along the way, I discovered: 1. Surprises are everywhere – you never know what you will uncover once you commit to looking beneath the surface. I found not one or two but THREE layers of carpet!!! In renovating my life, I have discovered old and unnecessary patterns of thinking hidden beneath my point of view. 2. One thing leads to another – once you start, unexpected new actions show up (like having to fix a VERY seriously rotten floor around the toilet that gave a clear view into the basement… yikes!). When we start making changes in our life, we often discover that our view changes and there are more things we need to do than we originally thought. 3. Gaining knowledge is ongoing – at some point in your DIY experience, you will need to learn how to do something new to accomplish your renovation goal (google the task, watch a video and then

do it until you get it right) and a life reno project is the same. We read books and attend classes, we seek out mentors and guides, we have meaningful conversations, and we practice until our current reno project is complete. 4. The process is worth it – when you step back and see where you started and what has changed, there is a feeling of accomplishment and joy at the progress made. This is the same whether you just painted and redecorated your living room or realized that you have become a more compassionate and patient person. The end result is new, fresh and an improvement. While my mom has been my biggest inspiration for becoming a DIYer, my biggest inspiration for life renovations are the people who share their wisdom, knowledge and experiences with openness, honesty and vulnerability. At WomenTalk, I am inspired to consider if there are renovations needed in my life. Do any attitudes need to be removed and replaced? Any behaviours needing repair? Any beliefs needing a new coat of paint? The stories of heroism, despair, joy, sadness, compassion, betrayal and celebration shared by the women every month are tools we can use to spark our own life renovations. What’s your next reno project?

5 Reasons

NOW MATTERS Although time seems to fly, it never travels faster than one day at a time. Many opportunities occur so we can seize the day, the hour, and sometimes even the moment. Life advances forward almost at the speed of light. Life altering (shattering) events take place in split seconds to affirm why every NOW matters.

1. NOW Is A Non-Renewable Resource. This moment is only guaranteed once. Once lived, it can only be revisited in your memories. The ability to choose what our mind

52 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

focuses on resides within us. When we learn to exercise that control, we ensure that today is not stolen by an unalterable past or an indefinite future. Now Matters because sometimes you do not have another second.

2. NOW Is A Gift. It is a gift you have to work for. To create the life you dream of, action is required. You are the only person able to connect your dreams, goals and actions. A year from now, imagine what your life holds once you left fear behind, taken the risk and started today. Now Matters more than any other time in your life.

3. NOW makes a difference in your life. It is important for each of us to fulfill our potential we were given. In order all individuals to achieve this, each person needs to unwrap and use the gift they carry. As we allow our light to shine, we unconsciously give others permission to shine theirs. Now Matters since what you do makes a difference.

4. NOW Creates Opportunity. In an instant, something can happen and our lives change forever. When we step away from fear, after we calculate the risk, we discover how much more the world offers. We make the decision whether or not we will explore the possibilities and follow our dreams. Now Matters so we live without regret The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

The velocity and scale of transformation the world currently experiences is unprecedented. World leaders meet to discuss and prepare for a future of disruptive change as the international balance of power frays, and scientific and technological breakthroughs are poised to transform economies and societies. You hold the ability to change the world you live in – your life, your family, your community, your country. We may not all create waves; however, every ripple makes a difference. I remember I did an article on Vaseline a few years back and could not believe the response I got from our wonderful readers (I am going to have to look for that article and re-publish it). For now, I have found a few other uses for Club Soda; not only is it wonderful with Gin, but did you know it can protect your hair? Rinse your hair with Club Soda after a dip in the pool. The fizz helps combat the damage caused by chlorine. It is great to soothe a troubled tummy – Club Soda contains sodium bicarbonate, which is an antacid used to treat heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach. It makes fluffier pancakes – nix the salt and substitute club soda for half the milk in your favourite recipe. The carbonation gives the batter extra lift.

You can even clean cast-iron pans – simplify scrubbing by pouring some soda in a still-warm skillet. The bubbles will help keep food particles from sticking. AND EVEN MORE:

• Remove fabric stains • Clean grease stains from double-knit fabrics. Pour club soda

on the stain and scrub gently. Scrub more vigorously to remove stains on carpets or less delicate articles of clothing.

• Help shuck oysters If you love oysters but find shucking them to be a near-impossible chore, try soaking them in club soda before you shuck. They will be much easier to open.

At Emerald Management & Realty Ltd., we pride ourselves on providing rental homes, condos and apartments, to suit every lifestyle.

• Clean precious gems Soak your diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds in club soda to give them a bright sheen. Simply place them in a glass full of club soda and let them soak overnight.

Emerald Management & Realty Ltd. is a family owned and operated Property Management Company with over 35 years of experience.

• Clean your car windshield Keep a spray bottle filled with club soda in the trunk of your car. Use it to help remove bird droppings and greasy stains from the windshield. The fizzy water speeds the cleaning process.

We invite you to find a home to suit your personality and lifestyle with a wide selection of properties only a click away at:

• Clean countertops and fixtures Pour club soda directly on stainless steel countertops, ranges, and sinks. Wipe with a soft cloth, rinse with warm water, and wipe dry. To clean porcelain fixtures, simply pour club soda over them and wipe with a soft cloth. There’s no need for soap or rinsing, and the soda will not mar the finish. Give the inside of your refrigerator a good cleaning with a weak solution of club soda and a little bit of salt to keep it fresh and sparkling.

To loosen rusty nuts and bolts, pour some club soda over them. The carbonation helps to bubble the rust away.

• Erase stubborn mug stains A daily tea fix can leave your mug with a hard-to-remove brownish tinge. Fill the cup with club soda and let it sit overnight. The soda's carbonic acid will eat away the stains, leaving your cup looking like new. • Turn gelatin into a dazzling dessert The next time you make this classic treat, jazz it up by swapping club soda for cold water when dissolving the powder. The bubbles caused by the carbonation will add eye-catching sparkle to the dessert, plus give it a surprising fizzy kick. Use a flavoured seltzer (like lemon-lime, cherry, or vanilla) to add extra zip. • Break a pet accident cycle Even after thoroughly cleaning up your pets’ accident, you can still smell traces of urine on the carpet. To neutralize the odour so there won't be a repeat occurrence, saturate the area with club soda and let sit for 5 minutes before blotting with paper towels. The soda minerals will safely deodorize the spot.

Last but not least, if you have a bottle that’s gone flat, use it to give your flowers and plants a drink. The potassium and other minerals will enrich the soil. Then pour yourself a club soda with gin and have a nice drink to enjoy with your flowers! Cheers, Kathryn Hartwell

A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?" "I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill." The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour • 55

Indigo

is the colour of intuition. In the meaning of colours it can mean idealism and structure as well as ritualistic and addictive.

Purple is the colour of the imagination. It can be creative and individual or immature and impractical. Turquoise is the colour of communication and clarity of mind. It can also be impractical and idealistic. Pink is unconditional love and nurturing. Pink can also be immature, silly and girlish. Magenta is a colour of universal harmony and emotional balance. It is spiritual yet practical, encouraging common sense and a balanced outlook on life.

Brown is a friendly yet serious, down-to-earth colour that relates to security, protection, comfort and material wealth. Gray is the colour of compromise - being neither black nor

white; it is the transition between two non-colours. It is unemotional and detached and can be indecisive.

Silver has a feminine energy; it is related to the moon and the ebb and flow of the tides - it is fluid, emotional, sensitive and mysterious.

White

is colour at its most complete and pure, the colour of perfection. The colour meaning of white is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion.

Black

is the colour of the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, creating an air of mystery. It keeps things bottled up inside, hidden from the world.

Just to bring all this information into perspective, it is a scientific fact that although most frequencies exist outside of our normal range of perception, all can be perceived as both colours and sounds. There are seven colours in a rainbow and seven notes in the musical scale. So the colour blue is also heard as the musical key of D, which vibrates at 587 Hz. But what is most interesting is that, if a frequency is vibrating fast enough, it’s emitted as a colour of light. This is the really cool part—the philosophical and scientific basis for the Law of Vibration is found in quantum physics and in Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Energy is related to matter and the speed of Light. This is Einstein’s famous E = mc2 equation. So before you decide on a colour of clothing or the colour you are going to paint your house – remember you are actually picking a vibration!! Kathryn Hartwell

7 Fire Safety Tips for Cooking

Amerex Fire Extinguisher

Many homeowners plan on having friends and family over during the holidays for dinner. If this is the case for you, then odds are you'll be pre-

paring a feast that's a little more elaborate than what you typically make - especially if you are cooking for a large group of guests. One of the things that you should keep in mind as you go about this challenging task is fire safety. Almost half of all residential fires are caused by cooking accidents, after all. The following are seven kitchen fire safety tips that will help you reduce the risk of an accidental kitchen fire during the upcoming holidays:

1. Make sure the smoke alarm and CO detector both work

You should have a smoke alarm and a CO detector on the first floor near your kitchen. This way if a fire does break out, everyone in the house will be warned and have enough time to get out. Test both the alarm and the detector to make sure they work as they should and replace their batteries if needed.

2. Have easy access to a fire extinguisher

Since your kitchen does use heat extensively to cook food, you'll want to have easy access to a fire extinguisher in case something accidentally lights on fire. Cooking accidents can happen even if you think you're being careful - so be prepared.

3. Never leave the stove top on unattended

If you're cooking food on the stove, then you should never leave it unattended. If you need to leave the kitchen for a moment, have an adult come keep an eye on the food. During the holidays, you may have kids running around as well - you'll want to make sure they don't enter the kitchen if there's food on the stove top without the supervision of an adult.

4. Don't wear loose clothing

Loose clothing can easily catch fire - especially if you have multiple foods being cooked on your stove top. Always make sure you're dressed appropriately for the kitchen.

5. Keep the kids away

Tell the kids to keep at least three feet away from the stove. Even if you're present or another adult is present, a child could seriously hurt themselves if they knocked over a frying pan or a pot full of hot food. Kids are also inherently curious, and the last thing you want is for them to accidentally start a fire because they were playing with the knobs on your stove top.

6. Keep flammable objects away from the stove top When using the stove, make sure the counter space around it is clear. Accidental fires happen all the time because paper towels, oven mitts or other flammable objects were laying too close to the open flame of a stove top.

7. Make sure you clean your cooking surfaces

Grease fires often occur because of a buildup of grease and food on the cooking surface. Clean your cooking surfaces regularly to avoid this. The kitchen can be an overwhelming place to work during the holidays, so make sure that you keep these seven kitchen fire safety tips in mind. Benjamin Byron

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life." The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"

Top 10 Home Trends for 2017

K

eeping on top of the hottest home trends is key for maintaining a fresh, interesting home. From preparing for a major renovation to getting ready to put your home on the market to simply breathing new life into your décor, the following ideas will get you started.

Earthy Pastel Hues

The 2016 Pantone shades were Serenity and Rose Quartz, which was right on the mark for the upswing in earthy pastel hues. Pastel hues depict the soft side of spring, with an organic, feminine palette featuring muted tones. Think about using curves and softer silhouettes to create a soft aesthetic, particularly in a living room, study, or bedroom. Choose one or two primarily pastels and use one or two more pastels as accent colours to keep the room from overwhelming the eye.

Mixed Metals

Brass and gold are as trendy as ever in the home décor industry. Silver and polished nickel are both making a comeback, and we're also seeing white plaster finishes in furnishings and light fixtures. With such a wide range of metals available, it's not hard to finish out a room with accent pieces in mixed metals, such as a bronze light fixture, copper accent table, and silver picture frames. You'll create a fresh aesthetic, avoiding an overly matching scheme.

Rich Wall Colours

A bold wall colour makes a vivid statement in a room for a very low price tag. In 2017, navy, coral, pink, teal, and emerald green will be

among the most popular wall colours. Choose a bold colour for a single wall, especially in a smaller space, and make the room pop by painting the rest of the walls white. If you want to paint several walls with a deep shade, choose furniture or art pieces in lighter contrasting shades to provide a balance.

Stain-Resistant Fabrics

Many modern families desire elegant, stunning living spaces that are also comfortable and practical. Selecting furnishings with stain-resistant fabrics makes your home more functional so you don't have to live in constant fear of your young children or pets ruining your belongings. For example, a sofa with a velvet-like fabric that's actually 40% polyester will withstand a much higher level of wear and tear than a genuine velvet coach. If you're set on natural upholstery, go with leather furnishings.

Upholstered Headboards

Upholstered headboards have been commonplace in luxury hotels and celebrity homes for quite some time. In recent years, the trend has become more widespread. It's expected to reach a whole new level in 2017. A new bedhead is a simple, affordable way to update your bedroom and add an instant touch of glamor. Headboards range in style significantly with everything from simple, classic models in neutral shades to high-end, plush models in velvet and other luxury fabrics.

Bar Carts

Bar carts are the new staple furniture piece in living rooms and other entertaining areas. There are so many beautiful bar carts and consoles on the market today. Consider your existing space, current style, and booze preferences to select a cart or console that fits the

space accordingly. A simple industrial bar cart is perfect for a rustic country home while a tall gold-trimmed console with built-in wine storage may be more fitting for a modern, elegant home. There are endless bar accessories to style your cart, such as coasters, drink labels, and ice buckets.

Repurposed Furniture

A repurposed furniture piece is the perfect way to save an old piece from the dump while bringing some new style into it to make it truly your own. For example, you may be able to save the original wood frame for a chair but add a contemporary fabric to take it into the current century. Keep an eye out for potential pieces at second-hand shops and estate sales or watch the Craigslist postings in your area for furniture deals.

Art-Inspired Wallpaper

The luxury accent wall craze has been on the rise for several years. In 2016, gilded metallic wallpaper was all the rage. For 2017, the trend has shifted to art-inspired wallpaper. Every time you go on Instagram, you'll see a stunning new large-format floral design. It's amazing to see such gorgeous artwork reproduced in this large scale. Using wallpaper instead of a traditional painting or print creates a prominent, distinctive statement in a living room, dining room, entryway, or bedroom.

Decorative Hardware

Decorative hardware adds character to any room without the investment of new furniture. Swap out your plain wood or basic round silver knobs for more expressive pieces. For example, if you have a star motif in a kitchen or bedroom, complete the theme with starshaped drawer pulls. You can also refresh old hardware for just a few dollars with a coat of spray paint.

As you weigh popular home trends, consider which concepts will fit most naturally in your current home while also appealing to your personal tastes. Even though upholstered headboards are all the rage this year, they may not look so great in your ultramodern urban home. Simple and Effective Ways to Protect Your Home from the Bad Guys

Looking for a positive real estate experience? Choose an agent that really cares

Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, securing a single family home can present some unique challenges. The Michaels family owned a small farm in Canada, just yards away from the North Dakota border. Their land had been the subject of a minor dispute between the United States and Canada for generations. Mrs. Michaels, who had just celebrated her ninetieth birthday, lived on the farm with her son and three grandchildren. One day, her son came into her room holding a letter. "I just got some news, Mom," he said. "The government has come to an agreement with the people in Washington. They've decided that our land is really part of the United States. We have the right to approve or disapprove of the agreement. What do you think?" "What do I think?" his mother said. "Jump at it! Call them right now and tell them we accept! I don't think I could stand another one of those Canadian winters.

Simply having a security system is one of the most effective ways to protect your home and your family. If you own your own home, you can purchase a traditional wired security system, complete with alarms at the doors, windows and other entry points. You can also add hard-wired security cameras that are remotely monitored by the company doing the installation.

Keep Your Garage Door Secure

Your garage door is the largest door in your home, and for many single family homes it is also the least secure. Many homeowners painstakingly lock their front doors when they return home, but they leave their garage doors open to facilitate easy entrances and exits for family members.

Burglars are savvy, and they have learned to look for the telltale signs of a security system when casing a neighbourhood. Simply having a security sign in the yard can be a good deterrent, and placing visible security cameras at the doors and windows could help even more.

1) Get that rake out! When the leaves fall and other debris hits the ground, it's important to showcase your yard as best you can. Invest in a good rake or leaf blower to make the task easier. Cut away dead flowers, tuck away the water hoses, and clip back any trees or hedges that are preventing good light from entering the home. Just don’t overdo it with the pumpkin leaf bags on the front porch! 2) Wash the windows and exterior of your home.

Get out the pressure washer and give your home a thorough exterior clean. Tuck away all deck furniture and other summer items such as hammocks, outdoor area rugs and so on.

3) Decrease the signs of pets. Fill in the yard holes, fix

up the dog house, and most importantly, get rid of the bathroom business! Keep kitty litters fresh & vacuum the dog hair. While we all love our fur babies, not everyone else will. Therefore, do try and take your pet out of the home when the house is being shown. This will allow the buyer no distractions while they view the home.

4) Clean the furnace. One of the first things potential

buyers love to check out is how well you take care of your furnace. Proper maintenance includes regular cleanings by a licensed professional and changing your furnace filter every few months. With extra dander and dust floating around from farmers harvesting, it’s always a great idea to check on your furnace and filter. Show those buyers how well you maintain your home!

5) Declutter! Decluttering and organization is a super way to

prepare for your big move. Not only is all the junk and items you never use recycled or thrown away in the trash, but half of your packing is done! Box up the items you won’t need over the next couple months, label the box, and stack it neatly in your garage or storage area. Moving day will be a breeze and you won’t have to pack along any unnecessary items to your next home.

The Mortgage Mogul

Economic Downturn…

Are You Prepared? With jobs continuing to be slashed in Alberta and no immediate recovery on the horizon, I have been receiving more and more inquiries from clients that have been deeply impacted by either losing their jobs, having their hours reduced considerably, or have been laid off temporarily. One of the many uncertainties facing these clients and their families is how their mortgage and other bills are going to get paid once the package they received has been exhausted, or with limited or no income whatsoever. Because these calls are becoming more common these days, I felt this was a discussion that was worth exploring further. When faced with a financial crisis, one of the last things we think about, understandably, is our credit rating. Unfortunately, the banks and creditors are not very compassionate, and during times of financial turmoil they don’t generally offer any kind of solace. All it takes is for a credit account of any kind to go into arrears for as little as a month, and the repercussions can be severe moving forward. With that being said, there are options… If you own a home or perhaps a revenue property, and have a significant amount of equity, you may be able to buy yourself and/ or your family some time until you get back on your feet again. This can be done by taking out a second mortgage, and using the funds to finance your everyday living expenses including your mortgage, vehicle loan, and making the minimum payments on your credit cards as an example. You might be wondering how you can be approved for a second mortgage if you are currently not working. The reality is, because you are offering a significant equity buffer to the lender, their security does not focus on your employment or credit history. If you are still currently working, but you feel there is a risk that this could change sometime in the near future, it may be worth exploring the option of refinancing your home in order to extract the necessary equity that you might require for the short term. By utilizing either of these strategies, you ensure that your day to day living expenses are covered, as well as continuing to meet your monthly obligations. This translates into maintaining an excellent credit rating with your credit grantors, and this will enable you to qualify for future credit (if required) when your financial stability has been regained. With access to many different lenders, as a mortgage broker, I am able to negotiate better terms and lower interest rates for clients who might otherwise call a company that advertises through one or more of the many expensive mediums, and ultimately be charged higher interest rates and fees. As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a mortgage moment with The Mortgage Mogul. MKT466 Comprehensive water advertorials AB Alberta version

The New Water Insurance Solution You Need Until now, Canada was the only G7 country where homeowners couldn’t buy insurance to protect their homes from overland flooding. Surprised? If you thought you were already covered, now is a good time to check your home insurance policy. The good news is that The Co-operators is introducing a new Comprehensive water offering in Alberta. It’s designed to cover sudden water damage from many sources, including flooding of rivers, lakes and streams*, and offers flexible options for all homeowners in one product. In Western Canada, this coverage is especially needed considering the severe weather and flooding over the last few years. Not sure if you really need this kind of coverage? In a recent poll, we asked our clients about their take on water damage insurance and responded to their concerns: Doesn’t my basic home insurance already cover water damage? A basic home insurance plan covers sudden accidental water damage that comes from inside your home, such as a burst plumbing pipe, hot water heater or hot tub. Most of our Alberta clients have purchased Extended water coverage for sewer backups, but there is still a gap in coverage. Unlike Basic and Extended water, Comprehensive water will cover water entering your home from outside sources like floods, rising water tables or groundwater that flows into your foundation.

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by a shaken little voice saying, "The big sissy."

I’ve lived here for many years and never had a problem with water. I don’t live in a flood zone or anywhere near the water. The truth is that water damage has become more of a serious issue recently with the increase in severe storms, aging infrastructures, and many other factors. Even if you don’t live near a body of water, severe storms can bring enough water into your home to cause significant damage. Although many other areas of the country have been affected by major storm events, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have been impacted the most. There’s also the possibility of water damage from sewer backups, ground water and other outside drains. I don’t want to end up paying more if my home isn’t at risk. Your rates depend on the risk in your specific location. We can tell you exactly where your property lies in the risk zones and base your coverage on your risk. You also have options on the amount of coverage and your deductible, and you may be eligible for discounts if you have water damage prevention devices installed in your home. We’ll make sure you’re not paying more than you should. We’re here to help Talk to us today about comprehensive water and review your options, or visit us online at water.cooperators.ca to learn more about how to protect your most valuable investment.

Your Perfect Turkey Dinner ere is an easy question: what is your perfect Thanksgiving dinner? Turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed pota-

toes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, jellied salad and, last but not least, pumpkin pie with whipping cream? For some reason, we also always have Brussels sprouts with cheese sauce. That is Thanksgiving dinner in our house. I cannot even count how many turkeys we have cooked over the years and even though the number is in the high double digits, I never can conceive why each and every time I cook a turkey I

worry about cooking time, stuffing and gravy. It’s like you forget the most basic rules of the perfect stuffed turkey dinner from year to year. I found these turkey cooking tips on 4 different sites and combined them together; everyone seems to have a different idea on how to cook a turkey! First, pick your perfect bird – there are lots of choices out there. If you prefer a traditional fresh or frozen bird, pick the healthiest-looking one in the weight range you need. And, remember, fresh may not necessarily be better than frozen; frozen turkeys are snap-frozen just after butchering. Figure on 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of turkey per person and add a few pounds for bones. Pre-salting is the key to a juicy bird. Remove the giblets from the turkey and refrigerate them for later use. Pat the turkey dry using paper towels. Sprinkle two tablespoons of kosher salt and one teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper liberally all over the turkey, spreading a little in the cavity and being sure to season the back, the breasts, and the meaty thighs. If you've never pre-salted before, this may look like too much salt, but it's not. As the turkey sits in the refrigerator, the salt will gently permeate the meat, improving the water holding ability of the muscle cells so that, when cooked, the meat stays juicy yet does not become overly salty. Arrange the turkey on a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet, and refrigerate uncovered (this dries the skin, which helps it turn crisp during roasting) for one to two days. Create a natural roasting rack for your turkey by layering carrots, onions and celery on the bottom of the roasting pan. Lifting the

turkey off the base of the pan helps to increase hot air circulation around the whole bird so that it will get crispy all over. And the vegetables add great flavour to the gravy. Chances are, the Thanksgivings of your childhood featured a stuffing cooked right in the cavity of the turkey. Go ahead and use your family recipe, but we suggest you cook the stuffing in a separate pan. Cooking the stuffing in the turkey can provide fertile ground for the growth of harmful bacteria. In addition, a stuffed turkey will take longer to cook, which could result in drier white meat. Instead, loosely fill the turkey with aromatics such as onions and herbs, and cook the stuffing separately. Remove the turkey from the refrigerator about two hours before roasting to take the chill off; this also helps it cook more evenly. Before putting it in the oven, make sure the skin of the turkey is as dry as possible, then rub it all over with butter or oil. For even moister meat, place pats of butter under the skin. Heat the oven to 450°F. Tuck the wings behind the neck, and tie the tips of the drumsticks together with kitchen string. Arrange the turkey breast-side up on a rack in a sturdy roasting pan. Slide the turkey into the oven, immediately lowering the heat to 350°F. The first hint that the turkey is ready will be the tantalizing aroma that fills the kitchen; you can count on its cooking for about 13 minutes per pound. To be sure, pierce the meaty part of a thigh with a sharp knife, and check that the juices run mostly clear with only a trace of pink—don't wait for them to become completely clear, a sign that the turkey is overdone. To double check, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thigh, careful not to hit bone; it should read 170 degrees.

When the turkey is done, grab both sides of the roasting rack with oven mitts to lift and tilt the turkey, and let the juices pour from the cavity into the pan. Set the turkey aside, tenting it very loosely with foil, to rest for at least 30 minutes while you make your gravy and put the finishing touches on all your side dishes. It is at this point in my house when I find my children hovering around the turkey looking for a nibble of crispy skin; can you blame them!?

At Coldwell, we are real people serving real people.

However you cook your turkey, you know it is going to be absolutely perfectly wonderful.

We’re committed to you and your family’s PEACE OF MIND.

It was autumn, and the Native Americans on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a new Native American Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect wood to be prepared. But also being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?" "It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold indeed," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. "Is it going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later he called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's going to be one of the coldest winters ever." "How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "The Native Americans are collecting wood like crazy!" The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

PAINT NIGHTS by U PAINT

“U Paint” was born when The Newsy Neighbour was approached to do a paint night fundraiser for a local Langdon family. Since then, it has taken on an identity of its own and is dedicated to hosting a great night out! Learn to paint, all while supporting a good cause. The demand for these events became so high that we decided to schedule regular paint nights to happen every second Thursday at Legends Restaurant & Lounge in Strathmore. Paint Nights are also held at The Langdon Crossing Bar & Grill. While not every paint night is a fund raiser “U paint” is dedicated

to helping out in the community whenever we can. If you have an upcoming fundraiser and you would like our support, a paint night is a fantastic way to raise some funds. Over $4000 was raised in 2 paint nights for the Langdon family and we just recently donated $825 to the Strathmore Municipal Library.
