Will He? Mave is giving Willy B a kiss—and why not? Life is good. They were the first chimpanzees from a closed facility in California to relocate to a wonderful new sanctuary home. But Mystery is still waiting and time is getting short. Mystery is one of 30 chimpanzees who were rescued by Wildlife Waystation in 1996, narrowly escaping being shipped off to a notorious lab. Wildlife Waystation recently had to close but caring sanctuaries are urgently raising funds to bring Mystery and the other chimpanzees to their new homes.

WHILE ON THE ROAD FOR OUR 12TH ANNUAL CROSS-COUNTRY PET ADOPTION TOUR Get Your Licks on Route66® last year, there were a few points of interest to check out in between events. Susan Sims and Honey on cavern tour.

Propane-powered Jeep-drawn trams tour the path left behind by an ancient underground river. During the 55-minute all-riding cave tour, trams drive along a one-mile tour route providing guests an up-close look at beautiful cave formations. The cavern was discovered by John Knox and his hunting dog in 1862. Knox did not want the cave to be exploited by the Union or Confederate governments, so he kept the cave’s existence quiet until 1867. Knox put an advertisement in the Springfield paper for someone to explore the cave. On February 27, twelve women belonging to the Springfield Women’s Athletic Club explored Fantastic Caverns. These twelve ladies are considered the first explorers of the Ozarks cave. Their names are still visible on the cavern walls today and they were mentioned in an article published in the Springfield Tri-Weekly Patriot newspaper. Our 12-pound Honey joined us as we were allowed VIP riding access in the Jeep which pulled the tram through the cave. Honey sat on my lap while we descended into the cave and seemed just as interested in the history lesson as we were that our driver shared during the hour drive. I highly recommend your well-behaved pet join you when your next adventure includes the Fantastic Caverns. fantasticcaverns.com In fact, I highly recommend your dog travel with you as much as possible and during COVID, it’s time to look for unique travel destinations and experiences with your furry companion. Beau Duperier, New Year’s Resolution Contest Winner.

14 Spring 2021

Beau’s 2021 Resolution: To Be a Good Boy for my Mom Laurie and Beau Duperier, Bethesda, Maryland. MY NAME IS BEAU! I am a one-year old handsome, energetic, big, really smart Labrador/Golden Retriever mix. I was abandoned with my brothers and sisters when we were tiny, but we were all rescued soon after. My Mom was waiting for me when I got off a dog transport bus from Texas, and I have been with her ever since. First thing you should know is that I am spoiled. Or at least that is what people say when they think I can’t understand them. What is “spoiled”? Sounds like something gone bad, so that can’t be me!! My Mom and I really love each other. We snuggle, she kisses me lots, and she tells me how much she loves me ALL THE TIME. But things have gotten a little rocky lately. Now that I am older, I decided that I really want to explore things on the OTHER side of the fence -- and I don’t see why I need to wait for her when I can jump the fence by myself. I like to use my body to do fun stuff! I also like to jump up and look people in the eye when I meet them. How else can I see their soul? That seems to cause a lot of trouble though, and people won’t talk to me until I lay down. I don’t WANT to lay down! I’m wriggly. I want to show them how happy I am to see them! And I don’t understand why everything isn’t tearable or chewable. What other use could there be for glasses, pillows, socks, and blankets? I have so many thoughts running through my brain at the same time. There is so much to see and smell. So many dogs to play with! So many people I would like to meet! Why can’t I just do what I want when I want – like go really fast on the leash when I pick up the smell of an interesting animal? My Mom never keeps up and almost falls down sometimes! She is too slow! I am starting to rethink some of this, though. I love my Mom so much, and it makes me sad when she is upset, angry, or worse – cries! I like

it when she is happy, and we are playing together. Hiking together. Doing ANYTHING together! Why don’t humans like to chew stuff together too? Why is she sad when I do the things that come naturally to me and make me happy? I know my Mom tries to make me happy every day with walks, play dates, and tummy rubs. And the truth is, it doesn’t really take much for me to make HER happy. She smiles if I “sit”, “down”, or “stay” when she asks me to. And man, if I come when she says “treat,” she gets a big smile on her face and gives me tons of cookies and scritches when I arrive. She isn’t like that at ALL when I am jumping the fence or eating her glasses. So, I am going to resolve in 2021 to try to understand my Mom better and make her happy by doing what she asks me to do. It is not nearly as much fun as taking off through the woods on the scent of a cool animal, but I will try harder to make her happy every day by being what she calls “a good boy.” I think I can do it for her!

Canine Condition The

Jacqueline Piñol has a big heart and lots of room in it for rescue dogs.

16 Spring 2021

A

ctor, mother, and fierce dog advocate Jacqueline Piñol is also a passionate animal advocate and works with various charities throughout the states and is currently working on a documentary about saving abandoned animals across the country. Coming off the success of the wildly popular

video game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales multi-lingual, Latinx firecracker actress, activist and video game veteran Jacqueline Piñol has just launched The Canine Condition Podcast with three

episodes now available to listen to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. The Canine Condition is geared towards dog lovers and features interviews with experts to bring awareness to and promote dog adoption. Piñol’s dog loving journey did not get off to a good start after being bitten by a dog as a young girl. Fast forward to her first dog Gracie, a fawn Pug and her world completely changed. “Gracie had me at hello,” says Piñol. “She was my faithful, funny companion for 15 years and she helped me learn to love and understand all dogs no matter their breed or temperament. She befriended many dogs and took me along for the ride.”

IT’S OK IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW BUT ONCE YOU DO KNOW IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAKE CHANGES AND DO THE RIGHT THING. That ride now includes six dogs. Before she entered the rescue world, Piñol bought Zeus from a pet store, her now 14-1/2 year-old black Pug. Says Piñol, “I didn’t know about dog rescue back in 2006 and I come clean about this because it’s an important message for both the viewers of my documentary and the listeners of my podcast. It’s OK if you don’t know what you don’t know but once you do know it’s important to make changes and do the right thing. Once I found out there are thousands upon thousands of homeless dogs up for adoption because they were rescued, well, rescue is the only way to go.” And rescue she did. Starting with Dublin, a female pit/Great Dane mix who is now 11-years-old. “She was a stray who we found and took to the shelter in 2011” Piñol explains. “No one claimed her, and we ended up fostering her for a rescue and adopting her. In 2015 I began filming my DOGumentary series, the Canine Condition. On our travels and shoots I ended up meeting and adopting Huckleberry who is now 7, Frances who is almost 9, Hunter who is 5 and Ginger who is now 4. All four are Pittie mixes from Georgia and the friendliest bunch. I love them so much.” Traveling with this large entourage is no problem for Piñol. “Unless we have to fly out of the country, the dogs always come with us” she explains. “I decided to trade in my sexy car for a minivan so everyone can pile in. And that includes hubby and five-year-old human son. We love to road trip around the country and have done it several times. On multiple occasions we have rented an RV and even helped transfer a few foster dogs to their forever homes. When we travel in the minivan, we love to stay at KOA campground sites. They are so convenient and dog-friendly, we love their cabins. Another great place to stay with our

The “Canine Condition" podcast is a place for education and resources no matter where you got your dog. If a topic involves a dog, Jacqueline is covering it and speaking to the experts who can enlighten us and empower us with knowledge.

This began our self- funded, grass roots journey around the country in search of the answers. This docuseries focuses on the people we meet who are taking action to improve the canine condition in this country. In each episode we visit a different city and rescue organization. The viewer will come to understand the difficult process from rescue to redemption, but will be left feeling hopeful, inspired, and empowered by the stories we cover.” Piñol’s podcast, also called the Canine Condition launched in January as a springboard to the upcoming release of her documentary series scheduled for early summer. Piñol explains, “The Canine Condition podcast is a platform to bring awareness to dog adoption and provide all dog lovers and pet owners

18 Spring 2021

DNA is Nature’s language. Each of us, including our

Breed Testing of Mixed Breed Dogs

beloved dogs, come with a DNA instruction manual that guides the development of our physical selves. The alphabet of every DNA manual is made from only 4 letters – A,C,T and G. These letters (2.5 billion of them in every cell), are arranged like sentences in the manual; some sentences are remarkably similar, others are common to a given specie, others are unique. What can these letters tell us about dogs?

Tracing Ancestry DNA technology and computer analysis accelerated so much in the last few decades that scientists could test for hundreds of unique DNA letters. Computer analysis uses the patterns found in pure-bred dogs to estimate the make-up of mixed breed dogs. Some companies offer genetic health screening as well.

Forensic Identification

DNA comparisons and archeologic records have shown how and when the dog ancestor, the wolf, changed from a predator and scavenger to the perfect companion for people. Time estimates vary (most settle on about 15,000 years ago) but it is certain that the dog was the first domesticated animal.

Pedigree Certification

Using stretches of the DNA letters, my laboratory developed accurate and affordable DNA typing. Every dog has a unique DNA type. Labs can also test parentage by comparing the DNA type of a puppy with the DNA types of Mom and Dad. All the DNA letters from that puppy had to come from either Mom or Dad. Otherwise, the parentage is incorrect. No longer dependent on “scout’s honor”, the truthfulness of dog pedigrees could be assured.

20 Spring 2021

The first use of dog DNA typing in a US trial occurred in 1996. Since then, I participated in many investigations, but none was more interesting than Jazz the Hurricane Katrina Dog. In the flooded city, the Augillards were prevented from taking Jazz on the rescue boat. Jazz was left indoors but their home was broken into before they could return, and Jazz was gone. A rescue organization found Jazz and adopted her to a Texas couple who, when the Augillards contacted them, refused to give her back. DNA typing and three courtroom appearances failed to convince an ignorant judge that Jazz was, in fact, the Augillard’s beloved family dog. But the family fought for Jazz; an appeals court finally overturned his verdict and she returned home to New Orleans. Now I have turned my skills to making Art from DNA – Perpetua Jewels are a treasured keepsake of your dog’s “instruction manual”. A way to keep them forever close. .

Coming Home

Stories of canine transport PHOTO CREDITS: TITO'S HA NDMA DE VODK A .

OVER THE PAST TEN MONTHS, INTEREST IN ADOPTION HAS BEEN AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH. And while it may seem that dogs are being adopted left and right, the unfortunate reality is that natural disasters and lax spay-neuter practices have led to thousands of strays and heartbreakingly overcrowded shelters throughout the Southern U.S. Enter Wings of Rescue, Pilots N Paws and Mission Miracle K9, the hidden network of nonprofits on a mission to transport these dogs to Northern regions of the U.S. where the demand is higher and the availability is lower. Whether it be a truck driving cross-country with six dogs or a plane flying over state lines with fifty, these nonprofits put it all on the line to give strays a chance at a forever home. Over the years, Tito’s Handmade Vodka’s Vodka for Dog People program has supported these organizations through donations and hands-on volunteer work. In December, they documented the plight of canine transport in a series called “Coming Home: Stories of Canine Transport” with the goal of raising awareness about animal transport and helping fundraise for future flights. To amplify the series’ reach and facilitate fundraising, Tito’s secured digital ad spots with TheDodo, BuzzFeed and WeRateDogs, hosting a matching fundraiser with WeRateDogs that -in just 45 minutes -- reached the donation goal of $20K, which Tito’s bumped to $40K, resulting in a total of $80K donated to Wings of Rescue in just four hours. elf-proclaimed nomad Nikki Delventhal found her dog Camper while hiking in Albuquerque, New Mexico in September 2020. She and her mom were driving in a remote area looking for a trail when

her Prius rearview mirror revealed a dog chasing her car.

The pooch followed them on their four-mile

hike then sat next to the driver’s side of the car when they got back in it. Nikki knew she couldn’t leave the sweet and adorable puppy out in the middle of nowhere. She opened the door, and he hopped right into her lap. Nikki shared that she had been ready to adopt a canine but was waiting for the right moment

when Camper found her. Nikki, a free spirit who believes in following her heart, has led a very interesting life. She trusts her instincts and works hard to achieve the objective she sets for herself. Nikki describes her persistence as “her crazy drive” and encourages other to follow their dreams.

She shared, “Teens are learning and their entire life is ahead of them. They are finding themselves, and I like to encourage them to follow their hearts.”

Nikki gradually customized her 2006 Prius with a mattress, a cooler behind the passenger seat, a box of non-perishable foods in back of the driver’s seat and other travel necessities. She recently figured out how to help animals through her meandering motoring by setting up a YouTube channel. Nikki has garnered almost 60,000 followers. She introduces viewers to animals who need homes, shares the beauty of her destinations, teaches her audience skills in how-to videos, and shares her travels and life philosophies. Her traveling is even more joyous with Camper, so Nikki recently founded “Camper Cares,” a non-profit organization that’s objective is to prevent economic euthanasia. Many people can’t afford veterinarian bills, especially unexpected surgeries, so Nikki has set up a GoFundMe to help them. Nikki reported, “Camper Cares raises funds to help pay vet and medical bills for families, fosters and animals in need. I’m using my platform to help broaden our reach to more of those in need who reach out.” Camper Cares has already helped a formerly mistreated foster dog, two rescue dogs and a family pet receive medical care.

She also plans to post videos of each animal the organization aids so viewers can share in the happiness.

When asked what Nikki has learned from her dog she says, “I feel like I learn from him every day. He’s made me a better person. More confident in my abilities. And taught me how important a routine can be for one’s well-being, even though to most it would seem we don’t have one traveling full time. He’s taught me even more about unconditional love and the bond we share and how special it is and how possible it is. There’s nothing like it. He’s my partner in crime and adventure buddy and truly my best friend. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” When asked what Nikki has learned from her dog

New Hosts of Lucky Dog By Susan Sims, Publisher

Millan, it may have come as a surprise to tune in on a recent Saturday morning to see new hosts of the Emmy Award Winning franchise.

Social media was buzzing; even though Brandon had

announced on his own pages that he was stepping down as host, many people did not get the memo. Eric Wiese and Rashi Khanna Wiese are the husband and wife duo and new hosts of the show. When asked how they felt about filling such big shoes Eric answered, “The biggest hurdle has been taking over a show that is so well-loved and respected by an established fan base that is loyal to the previous host, Brandon McMillan. We always knew we had really big shoes to fill but I now realize we were a little naïve to think that the transition would be smooth, and we’d be accepted immediately. Regardless, our focus was and will always be about the dogs. We know Brandon’s focus was the same and we are so grateful that Brandon has paved the way for people like us and others to spread awareness of dog rescue.” When you look at Eric’s background, he appears to be the perfect replacement for the dog centric rescue program, having started volunteering at age 15 at local shelters. It was at one of the shelters that he met a dog trainer, and his fate was sealed, giving the teenager the goal and aspiration to foster and to become a dog trainer. Eric recalls, “I was so impressed with the bond that the trainers formed with the dogs. The way the dogs responded to cues and watching them learn fascinated me. I think it was at that moment I knew what I wanted to do – I wanted to work with dogs for the rest of my life.” He formed a company called “Happy Puppy Dog Training”, offering in-home private training as well as group classes that focused on positive reinforcement training and science-based methods to the general public. Says Eric, “Through foster work, I came across my best friend – a German Shepherd named Archy. He had an unfortunate start to the world being only seven months old and showing many signs of abuse. It took me about 14 months to rehabilitate him. I decided to adopt him myself and try to make up for the lost time he had as a puppy.” Eric continues, “Living in Los Angeles, I quickly found myself working behind the camera with dogs. It was then I met my future wife, Rashi. She had recently completed her graduate degree in social work, and I was currently submitting case studies and taking exams to further my education with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. Rashi’s fascination with human psychology seemed to mesh well with my fascination, animal psychology. Rashi joined my company in 2015 and we eventually formed Happy Puppy LA – a dog boarding and training company. We then formed the WRARE Founda-

tion. Our foundation helps shelter dogs find homes and makes food donations to local rescues and shelters. When the production company for Lucky Dog approached us to host the show, I felt very excited and prepared to take on this new role, helping as many dogs as I possibly can.” Which brings us to Rashi and her role on Lucky Dog. Rashi explains, “As a social worker, I find behavior – how we learn, the different kinds of learning theories, and how it can be applied in various circumstances, fascinating. I worked with women, children, employees, and many other populations. A population I was never exposed to was animals, particularly dogs. However, that all changed when I met Eric and his German Shepherd rescue, Archy, in 2014. After learning about Archy’s unfortunate background of abuse and how Eric rehabilitated him using behavior modification and positive reinforcement training, I had an “aha” moment where I discovered my life’s purpose was to work with and help dogs.” Describing her role on Lucky Dog Rashi explains, “I feel my journey and all previous experiences have led to a greater purpose. My background and education prepared me for Lucky Dog and all the work I plan to do for shelter dogs moving forward. Social work and animal rescue can definitely open your eyes to some of the non-glamorous sides of life; the perspectives I’ve gained allows me to understand the needs and triggers of each dog we pull from the shelters and the type of family that would be most suitable for them. I view my job not only as a host of Lucky Dog but as an educator– I find it my responsibility to educate others about the benefits of dog adoption and to spread awareness on the beautiful bond positive reinforcement dog training can create with your dog.” When asked what more they would like our readers to know about them they said, “We hope your readers feel our passion for helping animals and are inspired to spread awareness of the #adoptdontshop mission. The list goes on and on and we intend to act on all of our visions, using our personal rescue dogs as inspiration to help as many dogs as possible.” We here at FIDO Friendly Magazine want to wish both Eric and Rashi continued success, a success they have worked hard to achieve and with the Lucky Dog platform, will continue to encourage, motivate and educate the dog loving populace. *I asked the meaning of WRARE “WRARE is an acronym for our family and all of our names, including our dogs (Winston, Rupert, Archy, Rashi, Estelle/Eric/Enzo).” To learn more about Lucky Dog, WRARE and Happy Puppy LA visit these sites: Happy Puppy L.A. – www.happypuppyla.com WRARE – www.wrare.org https://www.instagram.com/happypuppyla/ @ericrashiwiese

Regular brushing of pet’s teeth and providing them with a healthy diet and treats can significantly aid in keeping their mouth healthy and avoiding gum disease. Many animals show signs of gum disease because they aren’t provided with proper mouth care. Many pet owners overlook the importance of their pet’s dental hygiene. According to the American Veterinary Dental College, it’s estimated that most pets show signs of canine periodontal disease by just three years old. Since the primary sign of early dental disease is bad breath, it often goes unnoticed by owners because they simply think that bad breath is something animals just inherently have. Periodontal disease can cause some serious health issues for our pets and its important to practice good oral hygiene. If not, pets can lose teeth, and be in pain due to abscesses and infection. Infection in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body. Poor dental health has been linked to long-term periodontal and even heart disease. Below are recommendations for better dental care: I N CO R P O R AT E DA I LY D E N TA L T R E AT S

Sure, a Utah parks road trip can involve long drives, but the roadside scenery proves stunning and therapeutic. 3. Help curious cats settle in: It takes time for cats to become familiar with their new surroundings. Make sure doors and windows are closed, as they may try to escape to find their old home. Cats may “disappear” into a hiding place like a closet to calm their nerves. When in doubt, look under the desk in the Oval Office. Introduce cats to one room at a time - beginning with the permanent location of their litter box, to avoid confusion. Set up one more litter box than you have cats to promote harmony in your household. Keep their things in this first room, so they become used to the new home with familiar scents, then move their “scent soakers” like bedding and scratching posts across the house to make other rooms feel more familiar. 4. Let dogs sniff out their space: Allow dogs

to use their natural instincts to smell and explore by walking them on a leash for their first tour around the house. The sooner they get used to the scents of their new environment, whether it be the Lincoln Bedroom or the guest bedroom of a new apartment, the sooner they’ll feel at home. Maintain a regular routine and spend extra time with them at home to help them feel secure. Avoid leaving your pup outside unattended at first; a new environment may bring out new skills you didn’t know your dog had like jumping over or digging under fences as an attempt to return to familiar ground. 5. Going the distance? Locate needed services: If you’re moving far away, consider the different types of pet care services you’ll

Three Tips for Tripawds I've been lucky enough to look after two three-legged dogs and have learned a little along the way. There are a few extra things to think about when looking after a TriPawd, but nothing that should put anyone off adopting a dog who has had to have a limb removed. Here are three important considerLooking towards Mont Blanc

in our ‘back yard’.

• Three-legged dogs do far better with multiple short mad golden flow pouring over the bumper and down to the grass. Ed would drive the bright green car, hooting the horn and whistling at the dogs to follow – a fifth retriever charging merrily around the field. And I would gather up the stragglers, try and steer Leila away from the muddiest areas, and launch myself after Max if he so much as thought there might be a cat around. It was the most wonderful, chaotic, frantic three weeks, a crashing, life-affirming change from a world that had become stagnant. Mont Blanc was in my backyard, Lake Geneva in the front, and I found what I believe to be a universal truth: it is impossible to have a bad day when you have four dogs to love. walks a day. They're also likely to want to go relatively fast as this is easier for them. • Stairs can be difficult for Tripawds. If you live in an apartment that is only accessed by multiple flights of stairs, know that you will need to carry your dog up most of those. • On that note, for larger dogs it is a good idea to get a lightweight harness with a strong carry handle. You can help support them up steps, out of the backs of cars, and navigating difficult spots.

THE BACKYARD

Lost Dogs Found Connie Kapugia helps find missing dogs. by Cheryl Smyth CONNIE KAPUGIA OF MICHIGAN SPENDS HER RETIREMENT DAYS LIVING HER PASSION OF HELPING ANIMALS. Though this involves various voluntary activities with her local shelter and beyond, her specialty is reuniting lost dogs with their owners. About five years ago, Kapugia offered her assistance in the search for a loose dog. She borrowed a live trap from animal control services and set it where the stray was often spotted. After monitoring the trap daily, she even-

tually caught him. The relief she felt when she realized that a pet would no

weather inspired her to help bring missing pooches back to their homes. Kapugia delved into learning the process of pet recovery. She gathered tips from Lori Briggs and Lynn Fiedor, who started the non-profit organization Lost Dog Search Team. A couple of trainer friends enlightened her on the characteristics of individual breeds—understanding their traits increases her chances of catching them. And Kapugia can include the basic knowledge of owning five dogs herself. Meanwhile, she worked on buying supplies, including a large live trap and trail cameras—ultimately obtaining one that hooks up with her cellphone, which enables her to promptly see any on-site action. As each animal behaves differently, Kapugia assesses every situation to figure out a suitable strategy. For a sense of any hiding places, available resources and possible paths the dog may take, she sometimes drives around the area and examines the region overall on online satellite maps. She asks the owners to keep track of any sightings—dates spotted, exact location and direction of movement—and charts any info they provide. This helps her decide where to set up a feeding station and the trap. A dependable place for food motivates the dog to stay in the area, which increases the chances of capture. Generally, food lures them into the traps, but sometimes she uses other enticements, such as a scented item from a female in heat to tempt an intact male. Occasionally traps are not even needed. She also makes posters and posts them, along with flyers, which she distributes door-to-door. She gets the owners to help in the process where possible while continually providing emotional support throughout their difficult time. She puts all her heart into finding lost dogs and returning them home. She says, “It’s very satisfying seeing the moment when the dogs realize they don’t have to struggle to survive on their own anymore as well as the joy of seeing the owners reunited with their pets.”
