publisher’s note
ISSUE 85 FINDS US READY FOR WINTER, huddled around a warm fire with our fur-friends and family, celebrating the joy of the holiday season. Vicarious thrills abound in this issue from including Fido on a ski vacation to Mt. Bachelor, a visit to sin city in Vegas Furbaby! and meeting resident greeter, Birdie, at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes golf resort. A personal favorite is our 12 Stays of Christmas where we will whisk readers away to winter wonderland places such as the 133-year-old Fairmont Banff Springs in Canada. Tucked in Canada’s first national park, this hotel celebrates Christmas at the Castle and invites you and your dog to join along with a Santa Suite decked out with exclusive holiday décor. (page 20). Whatever is on Fido’s wish list this year, you will be sure to find that PAWfect gift in our Holiday Gift Guide and drool over our annual 25 Days of Gift Giving. It’s easy to enter for your chance to win the prize of the day and also makes a great wish-list for that special canine. Be sure to read the new study that explores the impact of pets on loneliness during the pandemic. It’s a reminder about the important role our canine and feline friends play in our everyday lives, especially during these unprecedented times. (page 28). We here at FIDO Friendly Magazine are wishing you a warm and wonderful holiday season and all the joy it may bring. Happy New Year!
Susan Sims Publisher p.s. The photo below has special meaning as we lost our Director of Barketing, Junior in August of this year. He was the Will Rogers of the canine community, a friend to man and animals alike. He will be forever missed.

OK, we admit it. We have an animal attraction. Can you blame us? At every Kimpton boutique hotel, we invite you to bring your furry, feathery or scaly family member — no matter their size, weight, or breed, all at no extra charge. If your pet fits through the door, we’ll welcome them in. THERE IS PET-FRIENDLY AND THEN THERE IS THE KIMPTON JOURNEYMAN HOTEL IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. The moment we set paw and foot inside impton Journeyman Hotel, we were greeted and treated like royalty. our dog’s name on chalkboard dog shaped sign in the lobby area designated for nightly hosted evening wine happy yappy hour brings a smile to any pet-parent. Wine for us and biscuits for Honey, had us ensconced on a plush sofa near the fireplace. Seemingly our own private concierge, Matthew was a bright light who was keen for conversation and kept the wine owing. We also spent time getting to know Gabrielle who made us feel at home and had a wealth of knowledge of the area. Once in our room, we were greeted with a porcelain dog with food or water bowl. Comfort is key and when staying at impton Journeyman Hotel, robes and slippers were available for use during our stay and the comfy bed hit a home run. Honey enjoyed the window seat overlooking the neighborhood and taking our walk later, we made a uick tour in the same neighborhood towards a small park filled with dog walkers and runners. Back at impton Journeyman Hotel, we ordered a pizza to enjoy in our room from the hotel’s res-
taurant and called it a night. Leaving the next morning, Matthew was there to send us on our way with water and treats. Honey and I give it four paws up and we will be back to experience impton Journeyman Hotel Again and again.
There’s more to our pet-friendly policy than just a no-fuss check-in and scratch behind the ear, though. We’ve got all the goodies you need to keep your pet pampered. Plus at certain properties our Directors of Pet Relations are on hand (or paw, as it were) to give you and your buddy a tail-wagging welcome. Here are some more ways we love your pet: • Everyone deserves a little respect. Your pet is welcomed by name. Sometimes, our Directors of Pet Relations might be there to greet you with a tail wag. • A selection of hotel amenities and extras including plush pet-bed loaners in your guest room, food, water bowls and mats. • A concierge list of nearby pet-friendly restaurants, parks, groomers and pet boutiques. • Door hangers alert other hotel guests and staff that your cat, dog, or other beloved pet is in the room. • Courtesy bags for walking your dog. • No additional charge for pets, no deposit required • No size/weight limit • No limit on number of pets allowed Visit their website and read about their pet policy here: journeymanhotel.com

One time I caught a lizard, but my mom screamed, and I dropped it and it ran away. I still check the exact same rock every time we hike, just in case it’s back. I saw the BIGG ST dog in the whole wide world, and my mom said it’s called A Horse. Mom said thank goodness my poo isn’t that big. We found some stairs that I love to run up and down and up and down and up and down, but my humans can’t keep up and they have to take so many breaks. I wish I could be off leash, but I keep getting called Mr. Sneaky Pants, whatever that means. I’m never ready to go home after each adventure, but somehow, I fall asleep before we even leave the parking lot. I love going outside to sniff all the sniffs, and I want to do it every day forever. My mommy said we can do that as soon as she wins the lotto and becomes a millionaire, so I hope that happens tomorrow. The nd. Love, ake

The first show featured Barbra Streisand the resort was home to iconic performers such as lvis Presley, Liberace, ohnny Cash, Tony Bennett, Tina Turner, The Temptations and Ann-Margret. Top performers and celebrities played and stayed here. And they still do, with the likes of Barry Manilow winning new fans. Located a few blocks off-Strip near the Convention Center, the Westgate captivates with concerts, cabarets and magic shows, its huge SuperBook and casino and a recent 300 million renovation. Guestrooms feature sleek furnishings and kitchenettes.

Friendly staff include Sir Winston, the Westgate’s Canine Ambassador. This vivacious Westie greets guests while taking walks around the resort. As for The Strip, this year is a great time to go. Las Vegas dazzles even brighter thanks to venues using Covid lockdown downtime to renovate and innovate. And more good news those literally sensational shows for which Vegas is known worldwide have resumed. The intermission is over, as ads for Cir ue du Soleil proclaim.

It’s worth getting a sitter for Fido so that you can attend performances that you will remember for a lifetime. My favorites At the Venetian, Atomic Saloon Show, with its hilarious and spellbinding troupe of sexy acrobats. At Treasure Island, Mystere from Cir ue du Soleil, which transports you to a tropical world of magical movement and music. Also by Cir ue du Soleil, O transforms the stage at the Bellagio into a dreamy water world of enchanting swimming, diving and dancing performances that, although I saw them, I still can barely believe my eyes. What a breathtaking experience! Then you might spend three hours at the one-of-a-kind participatory multi-sensory art experience called Omega Mart, the Meow Wolf extravaganza developed exclusively for a Vegas warehouse space. ot far beyond the bustle of Sin City, you and Fido can get exercise in beautiful parks including the distinctive Red Rock Canyon
ational
Conservation Area, about 20 minutes away by car. ou can hike a variety of trails in uietude and drive the 13-mile Red Rock Canyon Loop. Of course, bring the leash and plenty of water. In this arid climate, you must be extra careful about staying hydrated. Other nature areas include Mt. Charleston and Valley of Fire. head to The same goes for playing at several dog parks offering safe, enclosed areas for pups to romp off-leash while supervised. A favorite near The Strip the 12 acres at Dog Fancier’s Park. Dogs are allowed to walk on the Las Vegas Strip from the hours of 5 a.m. to noon. If you plan on walking Fido during this time, make sure to use a leash or a restraint of three feet or less. To ride in high-roller style, Omni Limo offers a variety of pet-friendly driving tours to places such as Hoover Dam and wineries. ou can also find a number of luxury boarding services. At night, it’s a safe bet you and your fur kid will drift off to sleep with ease at the Westgate or one of the many other resorts with Fido friendly accommodations.

THERE ARE TWO THINGS I LOVE IN LIFE. RESCUING DOGS AND TRAVELING. So why not combine the two and help rescue animals while traveling That is exactly what I thought when I learned that many animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country now offer residents and visitors the chance to foster a dog for a day. This provides you with a local, furry tour guide and the shelter dog with a much-needed reprieve from their kennel. It is also an opportunity for some puppy playtime if you’re missing your own dogs at home, and a great way to help a dog get exposed to potential adopters, who may never think to venture into an animal shelter. I was sold on the idea immediately and signed up for one of these short-term adventures in ashville, Tennessee. On the scheduled day, my boyfriend and I drove to Metro Animal Care and Control for their version of these day trips, called BowWow Breakouts. We completed the foster dog paperwork, discussed the rules and guidelines for our BowWow Breakout, and listened as the staff explained how they carefully assess all the dogs to ensure they are good candidates for this type of outing. As always, safety for the animal and human are top priority. We then eagerly waited to find out who the staff would choose as our new, furry friend. Would it be a girl or boy A big or small dog A younger or older dog The options were endless, and our anticipation was building. Finally, out walked our adorable, giddy travel guide named lmer! It was love at first sight (at least for me. I’m not sure what he thought.) This silly, white, and red goofball was perfect. He had a smile from ear to ear and I immediately knew we were going to have a great day. After his bright yellow Adopt Me harness was fastened and my shelter-issued fanny pack was buckled, we were ready to rock and roll across Music City. Our first stop was downtown
ashville,
where lmer put his best paw forward and was showered with love and belly rubs from everyone we walked by. His bright yellow harness caught the attention of uite a few onlookers, and I made sure to take advantage of the situation and tell them why adoption is the best option. Then we went to the Fido-friendly restaurant, 12 South Taproom and Grill. It’s a casual eatery th

They’d even constructed a mini sort of treehouse that the dogs would clamber into: they had a perfect viewpoint over the land but could have some quiet time away from humans. There was an old sofa in the barn they could commandeer, and outposts dotted around the land that were there for them alone. However small your home, make sure your dog has a place they can go when they need a little space. They’ll love you all the more for it.

Avoid Holiday Fires

The American Red Cross urges everyone to test their smoke alarms before the threat of home fires increases with cold weather.
Mary Kay Smyth’s dog, Coco, was very interested in the home fire safety information that Red Cross volunteers Melanie Pandich (R) and Jessica Cappelletti (L) discussed outside their Rochester, N.Y., home during the Sound the Alarm day of action on May 8, 2021. Home fires are the most common disaster that the Red Cross responds to, and the best way to protect pets is to include them in your family plan.

From heartfelt emotional readings to stunning revelations, Matt Fraser has audiences on the edge of their seats with his outrageous personality and uni ue approach to mediumship. Meeting Matt via a oom call earlier this year, I was intrigued over a reading I saw Matt give to a family where a pet who had passed came through. Matt told me that he was not a pet psychic, however if a pets’ spirit is there, he is able to bring peace to the Alexa Pagigiotis, Matt Fraser with cats Lady, Leo and Luca. pet parents by letting them know. Our pets are the first to greet us when we pass, says Matt. He went on to say pets are psychic and they sense the afterlife. I couldn’t get over how during our oom call that Matt just glowed and was truly a happy person. He said that he is happy every day because he is surrounded by family so his message is a healing one for those to not be afraid of dying. If you knew that your loved ones were with you then you wouldn’t be afraid, Matt says. The bestselling author of When Heaven Calls, conducts events online via
oom. The hour and forty-five-minute
events have been called the most unusual family gathering possible. During the live oom group events Matt uickly delivers messages of love and comfort as he delivers information to assist a family to let go of grief and treasure the loving memories of their departed family member. I had hoped that my dear departed Boxer, ake would come through for a visit, but as we were wrapping up the discussion, I realized that was not going to happen. As I was thanking Matt for his time he asked about my father, if he had passed and described him to me. He shared a personal message, from my father that I won’t include here, but su
ce it to say, it brought tears
to my eyes. He then asked, Who is Henry
What I was dumfounded.
I told him that Henry was the brother of my father, both who had passed.
SPIRIT CAN GENTLY GUIDE YOU TO THE DOOR, BUT YOU MUST CHOOSE TO OPEN IT.
our father wants me to tell you that they are both
there with you now and that he is taking care of Henry, just as he had done in life. What Matt couldn’t possibly have known is that Henry was mentally challenged all of his life and that my dad, who had passed over twenty years ago, was his caretaker then as well. The take away here is to tell your friends, family and fur babies that you love them everyday, be present and appreciate each other. Afterall, if Matt is right, they are here with us still, at this very moment.
